Nasce sotto il segno del turismo, dellacultura e del tempo libero il nuovo “Pu-glia Imperiale Magazine”, che vuole cat-turare l’attenzione del popolo dei vacan-zieri presentandosi in una veste agile perstruttura e contenuti. Il carattere bimestrale e la traduzione inlingua inglese sono segni distintivi dellapubblicazione, che si rivolge non solo aituristi italiani e stranieri (il numero diarrivi e presenze di entrambi è in co-stante crescita) ma anche ai residenti, ai“forestieri” dei paesi limitrofi, a tutti co-loro i quali trovano il territorio della Pu-glia Imperiale straordinario per bellezzemonumentali, paesaggistiche, ambien-tali, gastronomiche e...di spettacolo.E proprio per quest'ultimo aspetto, dirilevante importanza nel quotidiano

della vacanza, abbiamo voluto contem-plare tra le rubriche anche il calendariodegli eventi in programmazione ognigiorno negli 11 comuni della Puglia Im-periale: un susseguirsi di piccole e gran-di manifestazioni praticamente senzasosta, che animano un territorio in cre-scita anche dal punto di vista della crea-tività.Nel “Puglia Imperiale Magazine” c’èspazio anche per i trend e le tradizioni,per i musei e le feste, per gli itinerari so-litari e le curiosità: un “dove, come eperché” di questo territorio, a disposi-zione del turista-lettore e del lettore-tu-rista, che desidera conoscere e a cui pia-ce essere informato.

Tourism, culture and leisure activitiesare the star signs witnessing the birth ofthe ‘Puglia Imperiale Magazine’, whichaims to capture the attention of the manytourists visiting our region, with an easy-to-read format which highlights the fas-cinating contents.This bimonthly magazine with its Eng-lish version is aimed at Italian and for-eign tourists alike (constantly on the in-crease), at local people from nearby townsand anyone who enjoys the beauty, land-scapes, monuments, environment, cui-sine and entertainment of this wonderfulland that is Puglia Imperiale. As entertainment is such an importantpart of planning a holiday, we decided toinclude a complete list of the events tak-ing place in the 11 towns of Puglia Im-

periale: a host of events both large andsmall taking place almost non-stop, giv-ing visitors a wide choice of cultural andentertainment options, in a region whosecreativity is making a great name for it-self. In ‘Puglia Imperiale Magazine’ there isalso room for trends and traditions, mu-seums and celebrations, solitary itiner-aries and curiosities as well: a guide tothe who what when where and why ofthis land, for tourists and readers every-where with a sense of curiosity and athirst for knowledge.

This part of Apulia is so deeply rooted inits history, and its generous natural envi-ronment provides the ideal setting for itsage-old traditions, and its guardian spir-it or ‘genius loci’ as the Ancient Romanscalled it, is without doubt the medievalEmperor Frederick II. Traces of this fasci-nating and mysterious person’s presenceand actions still characterize the land-scape and the identity of the local com-munities, emphasizing their uniqueness.The name ‘Puglia Imperiale’ identifiesthe part of Apulia (between the Garganoand Salento peninsulae) where traces ofthis famous historical figure are easiest tofind, and encourages tourists to explorethe towns in the area – Andria, Barletta,Bisceglie, Canosa, Corato, Margherita diSavoia, Minervino Murge, San Ferdi-nando, Spinazzola, Trani and Trini-tapoli.The Puglia Imperiale tourism promotionproject, backed by the Nord Barese/Ofan-tino Territorial Employment Pact, creates

A long line of sandy and rocky coasts, asplendid stretch of beaches between Bis-ceglie, Trani, Barletta and Margherita diSavoia: with their beach umbrellas, wind-surfers, yacht harbours and quaysides, andthe wonderful summer sun which bringsout the beautiful colours of the crystal clearwaters. All along the coast, you will see apretty flag flying; Bisceglie has once againbeen awarded the Blue Flag for the 2006season. In fact two of its beaches have nowbeen awarded a blue flag, with one atSalsello and the other at Scalette, a suresign of the quality of its waters and of itsgreat facilities for holidaymakers.The city of Bisceglie is often described as a‘balcony overlooking the sea’, and theseafront (or lungomare) is crowded all daylong, from Lungomare Umberto Paternos-tro to La Testa, from Conca dei Monaci(the Bay of the Monks) to the Grotta, toLungomare Nazario Sauro. From themorning’s beachgoers to the clubbers of the

night hours, people flock to the area of Tor-retta and Trullo Verde-Salsello, with itsstone amphitheatre, recently converted in-to a stage where various shows take place,an ideal meeting place for holidaymakersand townspeople alike.The seafront in Bisceglie is filled with bars,where young people can enjoy the longwarm nights drinking a beer or textingtheir friends. Holidaymakers’ favouritepastimes include wandering along thebeaches and into the bars, and Bisceglie hasa wide range to satisfy all tastes.Local entrepreneurs have invested in theseplaces, and their belief in the holiday po-tential of the area has been rewarded: theirlocations have earned themselves a greatreputation throughout Italy and havemade Bisceglie one of the hottest spots alongthe coast north of Bari. Across Lama Bridge, with its view over thesea, nearby Trani is the undisputed queenof the summer. With its recently renovated

L’estate sulla nostra costaIn

Chilometri di costa, sabbia e scogli, ma-re splendido fra Bisceglie, Trani, Barlettae Margherita di Savoia: i lidi si rincorro-no, con ombrelloni e wind surf, porti tu-ristici e pontili, ed il sole della bella sta-gione esalta i colori delle acque cristalli-ne. Su tutta la costa sventola una straor-dinaria “Bandiera Blu” che Bisceglie è ri-uscita ad aggiudicarsi (sono in realtà ad-dirittura due: una per la spiaggia Salselloe l’altra per la spiaggia Scalette) ancheper questo 2006, a testimonianza della“qualità” non solo delle acque ma anchedei servizi che offre questa località digrande richiamo turistico. Frequentatis-simo in tutte le ore del giorno è, infatti,

il balcone sul mare su cui si affaccia l’in-tera città, da lungomare Umberto Pater-nostro a La Testa, dalla Conca dei Mo-naci alla Grotta, al lungomare NazarioSauro. Dal mattino dei bagnanti allanotte del “nightclubbing”, la gente affol-la la zona Torretta, quella del Trullo Ver-de-Salsello, con l’anfiteatro in pietra cheda qualche anno è diventato teatro dispettacoli ma anche il simbolo dei puntid’incontro fra vacanzieri e non soltanto. You can dance in the moonlight on thebeach at Margherita di Savoia, sittinground a bonfire: at night, the multi-coloured beach umbrellas come down –but the dancing goes on till dawn in thisspectacular sandy setting, where thousandsof beachgoers will be swimming the nextmorning. A seafront that stretches to infin-ity, with plenty of attractions for everyone.

Attraverso il Ponte Lama con vista sulmare la vicina Trani si conferma reginadelle vacanze con un lungomare final-mente rinnovato che offre nuovi spazi aibagnanti e nuovi locali per gli “animalidella notte”: dalla penisola di Colonnafino al porto e al centro storico, è un sus-seguirsi di lidi e di punti d’incontro a te-ma, davvero per tutti i gusti. Fino a not-te fonda, naturalmente, è possibile giro-

vagare fra gente e tavolini, fra un cock-tail e un happy hour, fra una margarita eun daikiri. La “movida” sembra nata qui,così come nella confinante Barletta: i ba-gnanti rimangono fino al tramonto sullespiagge sabbiose lungo la costa di Po-nente e di Levante, mentre dall’imbruni-re fino a notte fonda ci si ritrova fra i mil-le locali delle viuzze del centro storico, inparticolare in via Nazareth e piazzettaMonte di Pietà, o intorno alla Cattedra-le finalmente senza auto, dove si “socia-lizza” senza problemi punto d’incontrodei giovani di tutta la zona.Si balla sulla spiaggia a Margherita di Sa-voia, fra la luna ed i falò: a sera nei lidi sichiudono gli ombrelloni colorati e siaprono le danze, che durano fino all’albasu uno straordinario litorale sabbiosoche al mattino ospita migliaia di ba-gnanti. Un lungomare che sembra infi-nito, dove si alternano i locali per giova-ni e non solo.

Cos’è la Bandiera BluLa Bandiera Blu è un riconoscimentoconferito dalla FEE (Foundation for Envi-ronmental Education) ai paesi costierieuropei che soddisfino alcuni importan-ti criteri come la validità delle acque dibalneazione, la pulizia delle spiagge edaltre. Istituita nel 1987, anno europeoper l'ambiente, la campagna è curata intutti gli stati europei dagli organi localidella FEE, che attraverso un Comitatonazionale di Giuria effettua delle visite dicontrollo delle cittadine candidate perpoi proporre alla FEE Internazionale lecandidature della nazione. "Anche nel2006 il nostro intento è stato quello disensibilizzare le amministrazioni dellelocalità balneari ad un turismo che sap-pia coniugarsi con l'ambiente- affermaRoberto Riccioni, presidente della FeeItalia - capace cioè di incrementare inparticolare le presenze straniere. Il no-

stro augurio è che il governo centraleponga una particolare attenzione neiconfronti dei "comuni balneari", che nonpossono essere lasciati soli". Le bandie-re, infatti, e quella di Bisceglie ne è te-stimonianza, sono state assegnate sullabase dei dati sulle acque di balneazione,l'esistenza e il grado di funzionalità de-gli impianti di depurazione, un regolaresmaltimento dei rifiuti con particolare ri-guardo alle raccolte differenziate e rela-tivo riciclaggio ma anche per le iniziati-ve ambientali promosse dalle ammini-strazioni, la cura dell'arredo urbano edelle spiagge, la possibilità di accesso almare per tutti i fruitori senza limitazionie il sostegno a programmi di educazio-ne ambientale diretti alle scuole ed aicittadini con l'organizzazione di conve-gni, mostre e formazione attinenti pro-blematiche ambientali.

What is the Blue Flag?The Blue Flag is awarded by the FEE(Foundation for Environmental Edu-cation) to European beaches whosebeaches meet strict criteria such aswater quality for swimmers and clean-liness. Set up in 1987, the Europeanyear for the environment, the cam-paign is run by local FEE organizationsin each country which pay regular vis-its to check the quality of beacheswho have applied for the flag, which isthen awarded by FEE International.‘This year we have again been work-ing on raising awareness among localadministrations that tourism shouldbe combined with respect for the en-vironment – says Roberto Riccioni,president of the Italian FEE. Thisshould lead to an increase in foreign

holidaymakers. We would like ourcentral government to support touristcentres on the coasts as they cannotbe abandoned to their fate’.Flags are awarded on the basis of da-ta on water quality, the existence andoperation of purification plants, regu-lar waste disposal especially wasteseparation and recycling pro-grammes, but also the environmentalpolicy sustained by the local adminis-tration, street and beach facilities, un-limited access to the sea for all, andenvironmental and educational pro-grammes for schools and the commu-nity alike, as well as the provision ofmeetings, seminars, exhibitions andinformation on protecting the envi-ronment.

To give the city of Andria an internation-al dimension, to make it a culturalspringboard for the region: the Castle ofthe Worlds Festival, promoted and organ-ized by the City of Andria Administra-tion, and directed by Riccardo Carbutti,has come to its 10th edition entited ‘Ex-ploration. The body on stage’.The Festival will be held from August28th to September 3rd 2006, but therewill also be a taster from July 18th to 23rdwith a series of top quality shows: it willbe a way to get the event known by as

many people as possible in the middle ofthe summer; it will also be an effectivetourist attraction for the city of Andria,bethe perfect location for the upcomingevent.

LOCATIONSThe Festival will be taking place in Cas-tel del Monte, in Andria and its old town,

with its narrow streets, its courtyards andits squares. There will also be shows heldin other parts of the city in an attempt toinvolve people in the Festival in differentways.Over the years the ‘Castel dei Mondi’ Fes-tival has matured artistically and organi-zationally, and this has been widely ac-knowledged by the patronage of the Min-istry of Culture and of the Regional Ad-ministration, clear signs of the interest theevent has aroused both at a local and a na-tional level.

SECTIONSStage performances, modern dance, plays,readings: the Festival is divided into dif-ferent sections, including Physical The-atre, Nouveau Cirque (brought in thisyear to show that the event is for absolute-ly everyone), New Drama, Reading, Co-productions, Concerts and Workshops,Castel dei Mondi Off, Preview, a Fringe

Anche in questa edizione si propor-ranno spettacoli nelle aree cittadine me-no centrali, a conferma dell’interesse delFestival a esplorare diversi approcci emetodologie di coinvolgimento dellapopolazione. “Castel dei Mondi” neltempo ha raggiunto una maturità artisti-ca e organizzativa di eccellenza, ampia-mente riconosciuta a livello istituziona-le: i riconoscimenti del Ministero dei Be-ni Culturali, della Regione Puglia, sonola prova riconosciuta dell’interesse regio-nale e nazionale che il Festival esprime.

From 4th to 6th August, Trani will be re-living the key phases of an event that filledthe gossip columns no less than 800 years ago– the wedding between Manfred, FrederickII’s favourite son and the young HelenaKomnenos, Princess of Epirus and, if thegossips are to be believed, a very beautifulgirl.“The wedding of King Manfred” will takeplace against the wonderful backdrop of theSwabian Castle. Now in its second year, theevent is organized by “Trani&Traditions”(www.tranitradizioni.it, tel. 347-5181544 or 349-7353033), an associa-tion founded in 2005 to promote Trani’simmense socio-cultural heritage, by breath-ing new life into long-forgotten ancient tra-ditions. In 2005 the “Wedding” attractednearly 20,000 spectators, who thronged thestreets, squares and alleyways of the oldtown.For this commemorative event, the Castleopens its doors to anyone who would like tobe transported back 800 years to take partin the ceremony. During the months before the wedding, acontest is held to decide which of Trani’s

most beautiful girls will play the role of He-lena.Then, after the costumes have been madeand the backdrops painted, the performancewill start on 4th August with a herald an-nouncing the wedding to the crowd in thestreets. On 5th August, at the pier of SantaLucia, King Manfred will anxiously awaitHelena’s arrival, followed by a historic pro-cession; then it is back to the Swabian Cas-tle to celebrate the arrival of the Princess ofEpirus. And finally, Sunday 6th August isthe day of the wedding followed by a paradethrough the streets featuring the two lovers,clowns and jugglers, ladies and knights inarms.

THE HISTORYOn June 2nd 1259, the wedding took placein Trani between King Manfred (1232-1266), Frederick II’s son, and Princess He-lena Komnenos, the daughter of Michael IIof Epirus. Cheered on by their many guestsand a host of servants, the wedding was aspectacular success: the princess arrived inTrani on a big royal galley followed by a pro-cession of small ships. Poi, cuciti gli abiti e realizzate lescene, si inizia il 4 agosto con l’annun-cio al popolo del matrimonio per le stra-de della città, da parte di un araldo. Il 5agosto, presso il molo S.Lucia vi saràl’attesa di Re Manfredi per l’arrivo diElena con successivo corteo storico e ri-entro al Castello Svevo per festeggiarel’arrivo della principessa d’Epiro. Infinedomenica 6 agosto sarà la volta della ce-lebrazione del matrimonio con successi-vo corteo storico per le vie cittadine conla presenza, oltre ai due sposi, di gioco-lieri, cavalieri, dame e mangiafuoco.

LA STORIAIn uno stuolo di invitati e popolani ser-venti, il 2 giugno 1259 a Trani ebberoluogo le nozze tra Re Manfredi (1232-1266), figlio di Federico II di Svevia, ela principessa Elena Comneno figlia diMichele II d’Epiro. Grande la scenogra-fia per quella giornata particolare: laprincipessa arrivò dal mare su una gran-de galea reale con al seguito un folto nu-mero di imbarcazioni minori in proces-sione e venne accolta da Manfredi in uncaloroso tripudio popolare. In quei gior-ni a Trani naturalmente fu gran festa, lapopolazione venne intrattenuta con gio-stre, giochi d’arme, giullari, poeti.

IL CASTELLO SVEVO SI RIANIMAOltre alle vie cittadine principali e al ca-ratteristico centro storico, location prin-cipale dell’evento è il Castello Svevo, ma-niero del XII sec. che Federico II volleerigere imperioso sul mare, nei pressidella magnifica Cattedrale. Per tre giornila dimora federiciana tornerà ai fasti diun tempo; per l’occasione verrà comple-tamente ri-arredato secondo lo stile me-dievale degli svevi, e sarà visitabile anchein questa veste particolarmente affasci-nante. Il Castello, dalla pianta quadran-golare e dal vasto cortile centrale conquattro torri quadrate agli spigoli, e conun fossato comunicante col mare. Dueiscrizioni marmoree sovrastano gli anti-chi ingressi, aperti entrambi nel fronteoccidentale, datandone la costruzionenel mese di giugno del 1233; la secondaafferma che, per ordine imperiale nel1249, furono realizzati, il muro di cintaed una fortificazione avanzata. Ad unadelle due torri sul mare, nel 1240, Fede-rico II fece impiccare, a vista delle naviveneziane, ree di aver devastato le costepugliesi, Pietro Tiepolo, podestà di Mi-lano e figlio del Doge di Venezia, cattu-rato durante la battaglia di Cortenuova.

THE SWABIAN CASTLECOMES BACK TO LIFEBesides the main streets and the characteris-tic old town, the most important location forthis event will be the 12th century SwabianCastle. Frederick II wanted it to be an im-posing presence on the sea, close to the mag-nificent Cathedral. For three days, the Cas-tle will revive its past magnificence; for thisgreat occasion, it will be completely re-fur-bished according to Swabian tradition andvisitors will be allowed in. The Castle has aquadrangular plan and a vast central court-yard surrounded by four square-edged tow-ers, and a moat leading to the sea. Two mar-ble inscriptions dominate the ancient gates,both of which open to the west; one shows thedate of construction, the month of June1233; a second states that, by imperial orderof 1249, a boundary wall and advancedfortifications were built. In 1240 FrederickII ordered the Lombard commander PietroTiepolo to be hanged on one of the two tow-ers facing the sea, so that the Venetian shipscould see him. Son of the Doge of Venice andmayor of Milan, Tiepolo was captured at thebattle of Cortenuova and sentenced to deathfor ravaging the Apulian coasts.

The town of Margherita di Savoia has anational award called “Margheritad’oro” which was instituted in 1968.Margherita of course means Daisy, andthe award recognises the achievements ofthe “children” of Apulia whose work hasbrought prestige to the region. The prizeis given to eminent personalities fromApulia or to people who have a particu-lar bond with this region, from the fieldsof show business, sport, political institu-tions, entrepreneurial activities, medi-cine and science. The prize will beawarded during a great gala ceremonyon 29th July, attended by scores ofshow business people, politicians andjournalists.

This year’s Margherita d’oro for politicsgoes to the Italian Foreign Minister Mas-simo D’Alema, the one for culture to theconductor Riccardo Muti, the show busi-ness one to the actor and film director,Sergio Rubini, for economics to Vincen-zo Chiro, President of BancApulia; forsocial services to Livia Pomodoro, Presi-dent of the Juvenile Court in Milan. AGolden Daisy will also be awarded toSilvia Parente, gold-medal winner at theParalympic Games in Turin, and finallyto the young actor Riccardo Scamarcio.This prize also has the honour of the pa-tronage of the President of the Italian Re-public, which is testimony to the impor-tance of this award.

On St. Lawrence’s night, Trani will have aspecial charm. People are looking forward tothe 8th edition of ‘Star Chalices’ (Calici distelle), a summer event run by the WineTourism Movement. After the outstandingsuccess of the previous editions, this year’sevent is in Lecce (on August 6th) and inTrani (on August 10th). The last edition in 2004 saw about 20,000people from all over Italy strolling along thequaysides and narrow streets of Trani oldtown, stopping off at various food stalls inthe enchanting city centre. This year’s eventhas been enthusiastically promoted by theApulian Regional Department for Agricul-tural Resources, and takes place on the mag-ical nights of the shooting stars, when ac-cording to Italian tradition all of ourdreams can come true. The event combinesthe pleasures of the best wines produced bythe Apulian Wine Tourism Movement,with the distinctive Apulian extra-virginolive oil produced by the ‘Apulian Trattorias’movement. Old towns provide suggestive settings for thisevent, a succession of music, dance and the-atre performances throughout the night.

With his entourage, he sitsand listens to the dulcet tones of lutesand mandolins, and to the sweet poetryof the Sicilian school, the first literary ef-forts in that new language that was Ital-ian. What beautiful Oriental wall-hangings, and what about those splen-did silken gowns worn by the beautifulladies of the court huddled around theEmperor!Let’s now go through with him to lookdown towards his beloved Andriathrough the two-mullioned window. Heseems lost in thought, perhaps recallinghis triumphal entrance into the citythrough St. Andrew’s Gate, now calledPorta di Federico. Le sue formeCastello del Monte sorge sopra una del-le più alte colline delle Murge, a 540 msul livello del mare. Ha pianta ad otta-gono regolare di m 16,50 per lato, conotto torrioni pure ottagonali innestatiagli spigoli, ed è costruito di conci di cal-care tufaceo. Due rampe di scala salgo-no al grandioso portale principale nellafacciata rivolta ad est. I due piani inter-ni sono composti ciascuno di otto stan-ze trapezoidali uguali, variamente co-municanti l’una con altra. Nelle facciatecomprese tra due torri si aprono mono-fore al piano inferiore e bifore al pianosuperiore (salvo una trifora); le torri, incui si aprono solo piccole feritoie, sonooccupate da locali di servizio o da scale.Il cortile interno, cui si accede da tre sa-le, ripete la pianta ottagonale dell’edifi-cio. Iniziato prima del 1240 e già com-piuto alla morte di Federico II, si chiamò

dapprima Castello di S. Maria del Mon-te, dal nome di un abbazia benedettinanota fin dal secolo XII e oggi scompar-sa. Il nome attuale compare nel 1463 inun decreto di re Ferdinando d’Aragona,e da allora si è mantenuto. Federico mo-rì il 13 dicembre 1250: sedici anni dopoil Castello, trasformato in prigione, ac-coglieva i tre figli di Manfredi e, nel1277, Corrado conte di Caserta. Succes-sivamente fu feudo di Nicola Acciaiuoli,poi dei Del Balzo duchi di Andria e quin-di di Consalvo di Cordova, il quale lovendette nel 1552 a Fabrizio Colonna;ultima proprietaria, la famiglia dei contiCarafa di Ruvo. Abbandonato dai suoiproprietari, per tre secoli servì da rifugioa briganti e a pastori, finché fu acqui-stato, nel 1876, dal Governo italiano.Oggi Castel del Monte è dichiarato dal-l’UNESCO Patrimonio dell’Umanità.

The shapesCastel del Monte stands 540metres above sea level ontop of one of the highesthills in the Murgia. It has anoctagonal plan, each sidemeasuring 16.5 m, witheight octagonal bastions ateach corner, and is builtfrom calcareous ashlarstone. Two staircases leadup to the grandiose mainentrance in the east-facingwall. The two floors insideare each made up of eightidentical trapeze-shapedcommunicating rooms. Inthe walls between the bas-tions there are simple win-dows on the lower floor andmullioned windows on theupper floor (apart from onetwo-mullioned window).The bastions themselveshave only narrow slits, andcontain storage space, la-trines and staircases. Theinner courtyard, communi-cating with three of therooms, is again octagonal.Work on the castle began in1240 and was completedbefore the death of Freder-

ick ten years later. It wasoriginally called Castello diSanta Maria del Monte, af-ter a Benedictinemonastery of the times. Thecurrent name first appearsin a 1463 decree by KingFerdinand of Aragon, andhas remained ever since.Frederick died on 13th De-cember 1250: sixteen yearslater, the Castle had beenturned into a prison forManfred’s three infant sons,and again in 1277 for Con-rad, Duke of Caserta. Laterit was a feod belonging toNicola Acciaiuoli, then theDel Balzo dukes of Andriaand then Consalvo of Cor-doba, who sold it in 1552 toFabrizio Colonna; the lastowners were the Carafafamily, counts of Ruvo.Abandoned by its owners,for three centuries it was arefuge for brigands andshepherds, until it was pur-chased by the Italian Statein 1876. Today Castel delMonte is a UNESCO WorldHeritage Site.

It sometimes happens that outstandingevents give even the tiniest of places a pla-ce in the collective memory of whole gene-rations: this is the case for the little hill ofCanne, near Barletta which, after the fa-mous battle fought between the Romantroops and the Carthaginian army led bythe legendary hero Hannibal in 216B.C., has gone down in history as Cannedella Battaglia (‘of the Battle’).From the hill overlooking the naturaltheatre of the famous battle, Cannae to-wers above the horizon till the Garganopromontory; in its citadel is an ‘Antiqua-rium’ where you can see relics of ancientcivilizations from the 6000 B.C. all theway up to the 18th century A.D.

THE PROTAGONISTSHannibal Barca, the leader of the Car-thaginian army in Italy, a sworn enemyof Rome; Lucius Aemilius Paulus, Romanconsul who replaces Quintus Fabius asleader of the Roman troops and who, likehis predecessor, was very cautious and un-willing to start a battle; Gaius TerentiusVarro, a rich plebeian trader and ama-teur politician who led the troops togetherwith Emilio Paolo.

THE LOCATIONThe battle happened at Canne on theplain of the river Ofanto, called ‘Aufidus’,the only real river flowing through Apu-lia. In wintertime, this land used to bemarshy and was regularly flooded by theswelling river, but on 2nd August 216B.C., it was a green and flat plain, anideal place for grazing. The location of thebattle was near the stronghold of Cannae,where the Carthaginians easily seizedand plundered an important food depotfor the Roman army. Cannae was locatedclose to strategic roads along the Adriaticcoasts and was near the important townof ‘Canusium’, now called Canosa.

THE FORCES ON THE BATTLEFIELDThe Roman army was very likely made upof 85,000 men, as Rome made use of all

its military forces, while the Carthagi-nians were estimated to be about 30-35,000 men, as Hannibal had lost manysoldiers while crossing the Alps or frombeing attacked by local raiders; it inclu-ded about 20,000 Gaulish and Iberianmercenary footsoldiers, about 10,000 éli-te Libyan troops, and about 5,000 Nu-midian cavalrymen who were Hannibal’sown favourite soldiers. The Roman armywas young and raw with a well-trainedcavalry but with no real war experience.Rome had offered up the cream of itsyouth, as its very survival was at stake.

THE FACTSOn July 29th, the Roman troops arrivedwithin sight of the Carthaginians and setup camp about 5 miles from the enemycamp, which was on a small hill where to-day’s town of San Ferdinando di Pugliastands. Accade talvolta che eventi eccezionalifacciano di un piccolo sito, un luogo de-stinato a imprimersi nella memoria col-lettiva: è il caso della piccola altura diCanne, a Barletta, che in ricordo delgrande scontro tra i Romani e i Cartagi-nesi guidati dal mitico eroe Annibale del216 a.C. è passata alla storia come"Canne della Battaglia". Dalla collina che domina il teatro natu-rale della celebre battaglia, Canne sovra-sta tutto l’orizzonte fino al Gargano conla sua cittadella, dove si allineanonell’"Antiquarium" reperti di civiltà chespaziano dal VI millennio a.C. fino al1700 d.C.

LA LOCATIONLa battaglia si svolse a Canne nella pia-na dell'Ofanto, detto Aufidus, unico ve-ro fiume che attraversava e attraversa leterre di Apulia. Questa zona d'inverno sipresentava acquitrinosa e spesso allagatadal fiume in piena, ma nel mese di Ago-sto, precisamente il 2 Agosto del 216a.c., è una distesa verde e pianeggianteadatta al pascolo. La località dello scon-tro è sita nei pressi della fortezza di Can-ne, dove i Cartaginesi senza colpo ferire,hanno occupato e saccheggiato un im-portante deposito di viveri dell'esercitoromano. Canne è situata nei pressi diimportanti vie di comunicazione che sitrovano sulle coste dell'Adriatico, ed èvicina all'importante città di Canusium,attuale Canosa.

trast, Hannibal arranged his footsoldiersin an arc facing the Roman troops. AsHannibal had predicted, the central partof his formation soon gave way, allowingthe Roman troops to break through it.Hannibal took great advantage of this ac-tion and, by making use of a militarystrategy that would later become famous,his élite soldiers surrounded the Romaninfantry with a deadly pincer movement.From the wings of the formation histroops passed to the rear of the Romantroops, thus completing the encircling ma-noeuvre: the compact Roman unit had noroom for manoeuvre.Caught in a mortal grip, the inexperien-ced Roman infantrymen were surroundedand destroyed by the Carthaginian ca-valry. When the massacre ended, about50,000 Romans had perished. TerentiusVarro managed to escape with a few otherRomans – all that was left of a oncemighty army.

I FATTIIl 29 luglio i Romani arrivarono in vistadei Cartaginesi e costruirono il campoad una distanza di circa cinque migliadal campo nemico, che si trovava su unacollinetta ove attualmente si trova S.Ferdinando di Puglia. I Romani costrui-rono anche un campo minore sull’altrariva del fiume Ofanto per ostacolare i re-parti Cartaginesi che scendevano nellapiana di Canne per rifornirsi di grano. Il 31 luglio Annibale ordinò alle suetruppe di prepararsi alla battaglia.All'indomani, il 1° agosto, l'intero eser-cito punico si dispiegò per la battagliasulla riva settentrionale del fiume. I Ro-mani restarono nel loro accampamento,ed i consoli ordinarono ai soldati di en-trambi i campi di prepararsi per la bat-taglia che avrebbe avuto luogo il giornosuccessivo. All’alba del 2 agosto Terenzio Varronenon vedeva l'ora di dare battaglia ad An-nibale. Il suo primo errore fu quello didisporre le centurie su tre schiere piùserrate del solito, formando uno schie-ramento estremamente compatto pron-to a sfondare le linee nemiche. Pose poila cavalleria divisa sulle due ali delloschieramento; infine lasciò una riservadi circa diecimila fanti nell'accampa-mento. Annibale, invece, diede alloschieramento dei fanti una forma arcua-ta con la convessità verso lo schieramen-to romano. Come previsto dallo stessoAnnibale, lo schieramento centrale del-la fanteria cartaginese cedette, e in forzalo schieramento romano lo penetròsfondandone le righe. Annibale trassegrande vantaggio da questo sfondamen-to e, con una manovra che diverrà clas-sica nelle strategie militari, fece chiude-re a tenaglia la fanteria romana dalle suetruppe scelte. Dai lati dello schieramen-to queste passarono, infatti, alle spalledei romani chiudendo posteriormentel'accerchiamento: le legioni romane,compatte, non riuscirono più a mano-vrare. Rimanendo strette in una morsamortale: sulla accerchiata ed inespertafanteria romana si abbatté infine tutta lacavalleria cartaginese. Il massacro volge-va a termine, e alla fine sul campo peri-rono circa 50.000 romani. Terenzio Varrone si salvò con una partedi sbandati. Ciò che rimaneva dell'eser-cito romano.

Il Parco archeologicoSituato a pochi chilometrida Barletta, il Parco Archeo-logico di Canne della Batta-glia mantiene ancora intat-ta la suggestiva atmosferadell'epica battaglia. Muo-vendosi per il Parco Archeo-logico si possono facilmenteindividuare i resti dell'abita-to romano su parte del qua-le sorse, in epoca medieva-le, una cittadella fortificata.Di particolare rilievo è l'An-tiquarium allestito all'inter-no del Parco che raccogliereperti archeologici dall'etàneolitica al Medioevo (orna-menti inbronzo eambre, cor-redi tomba-li, cerami-che, ante-fisse, iscri-zioni, mo-nete di epo-ca bizanti-na), e in particolare vasi di-pinti a disegni geometricidauno-peuceti (IV-III seco-lo a.C.) provenienti dai se-polcreti di Canne. L'Anti-quarium dispone di plastici,grafici e pannelli didatticisulla battaglia e sui ritrova-menti nell'area archeologi-ca. Nell'ambito della Citta-della sono conservate tutto-ra parecchie colonne miliari,tra cui quella accanto, chereca incisa una iscrizionededicata all'imperatore Co-stantino nel IX anno del suo

regno (313-314). Essa pro-viene, forse, dalla via Traia-na che correva, però, a po-chi chilometri da Canne o daun'altra via trasversale cheuniva Venosa a Barletta. Ta-li colonne miliari, al pari del-le altre sculture erratichefurono sistemate probabil-mente già in età medievaleper abbellire la cittadella,testimonianza precoce -questa - della riscoperta edel gusto per l'antico e lasua riutilizzazione.Le rovine della cittadellasorgono su una collina spia-

The Archaeological ParkA few kilometres from Bar-letta, the ArchaeologicalPark of Canne dellaBattaglia evokes the at-mosphere of the epic bat-tle. As you walk aroundthe Archaeological Park, itis easy to make out the re-mains of the Roman settle-ment which gave way inmedieval times to a forti-fied citadel. The ‘Antiquar-ium’, inside the Park, is ofparticular interest, withrelics dating back from theNeolithic to the MiddleAges (bronze ornamentsand amber, tomb outfit,pottery, antefixes, inscrip-tions, Byzantine coins),and vases decorated withgeometric shapes datingback to the Dauno-Peucetian period (4th –3rd century B.C.) from thenecropolis at Cannae.On display at the ‘Anti-quarium’ are scale models,graphics and educationalpanels on the battle andthe archaeological relics.The Citadel still has plentyof milestones, includingthe one shown here, withan inscription dedicated toEmperor Constantine in

the 9th year of his reign(313-314 A.D.). It proba-bly comes either from theTrajan Way that passesclose to Cannae or from alesser road that connectedVenosa with Barletta.These milestones, like oth-er erratic sculptures, wereprobably used in medievaltimes to adorn the citadel,early evidence of the re-discovery and interest forthe past and its re-use.The ruins of the citadelstand on an elliptical, flat-topped hill: to get toCanne della Battaglia fromBarletta, take the SS 93towards Canosa di Pugliaand turn right at km 9. Giuseppe De Nittis’ masterpieces andJacques Joseph Tissot’s best work are beingshown in an outstanding joint exhibition atPalazzo della Marra in Barletta, supervisedby Emanuela Angiuli and Katy Spurrell:opened last March 11th, the exhibition hasalready been visited by about 30,000 peo-ple, making it an international success, ho-nouring the Apulian artist who lived andworked between Barletta and Paris, andwhose unique paintings were a vivid por-trait of the rapidly transforming society ofhis time.Divided into 5 thematic sections, including

82 paintings by De Nittis and 50 oil paint-ings and engravings by Tissot, the exhibitionoriginates from works held in the ‘GiuseppeDe Nittis Picture Gallery’ in Barletta, orig-inally created after 172 paintings, pastelsand engravings were donated to the city ofBarletta by Léontine Gruvelle following thepainter’s death at the age of 38. Other workscome from Italian and French private col-lections and museums. Tissot’s works are be-ing exhibited in Italy for the first time andare from the most famous European muse-ums, such as London’s Tate Gallery and theMusée d’Orsay in Paris. The two artists shared the same cultural in-terests and were close friends: they embodied,

each in his own way, the aesthetics of bour-geois modernity theorized by CharlesBaudelaire in his essay Le peintre de la viemoderne (‘The painter of modern life’)published in Paris in 1863.The exhibition, produced and managed byArtemisia, is supported by the Barletta localAdministration and the Apulia RegionalAdministration, with the patronage of theChamber of Commerce of Bari and ‘Cassadi Risparmio di Puglia’ Foundation; themain sponsor is Svimservice. I capolavori di Giuseppe de Nittis e le piùbelle opere di Jaques Joseph Tissot, insiemea Palazzo della Marra a Barletta, in unamostra straordinaria curata da EmanuelaAngiuli e Katy Spurrell: aperta dall’11marzo scorso, l’esposizione ha registrato unnumero di visitatori da record (intorno ai30mila fino ad oggi), confermandosi even-to di portata internazionale, che finalmen-te “premia” in particolare la personalitàdell’artista barlettano-parigino, nell’otticadi un rinnovato interesse nei confronti diquella particolarissima pittura che fotogra-fava una società in rapida evoluzione. Arti-colata in cinque sezioni tematiche, com-prendenti 82 opere di De Nittis e 50 fra olie incisioni di Tissot, la mostra nasce dalleopere della Pinacoteca Giuseppe De Nittisdi Barletta, istituita in seguito alla dona-zione di 172 fra dipinti, pastelli e incisionidonati da Léontine Gruvelle a Barletta do-po la morte di De Nittis avvenuta quandol'artista aveva 38 anni. Ad esse si accompa-gnano altre provenienti da musei e colle-zioni private italiane e francesi. Le opere diTissot giungono invece per la prima voltain Italia e provengono dai più prestigiosimusei europei, tra cui La Tate Gallery diLondra e il Museo d'Orsay di Parigi. I due artisti, che nella vita furono legati da

amicizia e da comuni interessi culturali, sifecero interpreti, ciascuno con una propriavisione del mondo ed un personale lin-guaggio stilistico, dell'estetica della moder-nità borghese teorizzata da Charles Baude-laire nel saggio Le peintre de la vie moder-ne, pubblicato a Parigi nel 1863. La bellezza di Tri-nitapoli, meta delturismo sosteni-bile e archeologi-co (da non perde-re “L’ipogeo degliavori”), in questoperiodo dell’annoè nei colori, neisuoni, nei giochidi luce della zonaumida. Il visitato-re affascinato daquesto suggestivoambiente natura-le, pur restando aimargini della ri-serva, come lungo la statale 159, in cui visono diverse piazzole di sosta, può faredelle osservazioni a dir poco entusia-smanti. La Salina è per estensione laprincipale fra le zone umide del Tavolie-re e fa parte del sistema delle zone umi-de del Golfo di Manfredonia che siestendono nella piana costiera, dalla fo-ce dell’Ofanto fino alle pendici del Gar-gano.L’intero territorio (per un totale di sedi-cimila ettari), individuato quale Sitod’Importanza Comunitaria, ospita di-verse specie faunistiche facilmente visibi-li ed udibili rispetto ad altre zone umide

e la possibilitàper gli amantidella natura dipoter osservare gliuccelli presentinella Riserva at-traverso percorsidi bird-watching,grazie anche allaconsulenza degliesperti del Centrodi EducazioneAmbientale “Ca-sa di Ramsar”.La specie più ap-

pariscente tra quelle attualmente osser-vabili in Salina è sicuramente il Fenicot-tero rosa sia per le dimensioni sia per ilbel colore.Assistere da vicino al volo “nu-ziale” dei fenicotteri è uno spettacoloemozionante. Ormai quest’uccello, inpochissimi anni, ha legato la sua noto-rietà alla Salina di Margherita di Savoia.Altri uccelli simbolo, che si possono os-servare in questa stagione, sono il cava-liere d’Italia e l’avocetta. Ai primi caldidella bella stagione, dopo un volo di qua-si 3.000 chilometri, questi graziosi uc-celli fanno visita alla Salina e incomin-ciano i preparativi per l’accoppiamento ela costruzione del nido. Tanti altri esem-plari (volpoca, garzetta, aironi, chiurlo,pittima reale, pettegola, mignattaio) ren-dono indimenticabile una visita in que-sta riserva naturale, tanto amata da Fe-derico II di Svevia che nei pressi di Salpiistituì una “defensa”, (riserva di caccia) eun “palitium”, la sua residenza di cacciausata per l’allevamento dei falconi. Mol-tissime delle specie descritte nel suo trat-tato di falconeria sono tuttora comuninella Salina e, osservando le preziose mi-niature che raffigurano i vari uccelli,sembra proprio di sfogliare un manualedi bird-watching dei giorni nostri.

At this time of year, the beauty of Trinitapoli,a centre for sustainable and archaeologicaltourism - don’t miss the Ivory Hypogeum! -lies in the colours, sounds and light of its wet-lands. Even on the edges of the reserve, alongthe SS 159 for example, where there are sev-eral laybys to stop in, visitors to this magnif-icent natural environment can truly feasttheir eyes and ears. The saltflats are the largestof the many wetlands in the area, whichstretch along the coast of the Gulf of Manfre-donia from the mouth of the Ofanto River tothe foothills of the Gargano peninsula.The saltflats cover an area of 16,000 hectaresand have been designated as a Site of Com-munity Importance. They are prime habitatfor various types of birds which are much eas-ier to see and hear in this reserve than inmany other wet-lands. Nature-lovers can walkalong the designat-ed birdwatchingfootpaths in the Re-serve, which weredesigned with thehelp of experts fromthe “Casa di Ram-sar” Environmen-tal Education Cen-tre.One of the mostconspicuous birds

on the saltflats must of course be the GreaterFlamingo, due to its sheer size and brightpink plumage. There are few more thrillingsights than watching these tall gangling birdsin flight. In just a few years, the Flamingohas become the symbol of the saltflats ofMargherita di Savoia. Other breathtakinglybeautiful birds to be seen at this time of theyear include the Black-winged Stilt and theAvocet. As the late spring sunshine begins towarm the waters of the saltflats, the gracefulStilts arrive at the end of a flight of nearly3000 kilometres, and immediately start get-ting ready for the mating and breeding sea-son. Many other species (including Shel-ducks, Little Egrets, various types of heron,Curlews, Black-tailed Godwits, Redshanksand Glossy Ibis) make a visit to this nature

reserve an unforgettable experience. And youare in good company – Emperor Frederick IIof Swabia loved this area so much that hebuilt a hunting reserve called a defensa, anda palitium, or hunting lodge in nearby Salpi,which he used for raising his beloved falcons.Many of the species described in his treatiseon falconry are still common on the saltflats,and when we browse through looking at hisexquisite miniatures of various bird species, itfeels very much like looking at a modern-daybirdwatching manual.

La riscoperta delle "Terme Ferrara",straordinario sito archeologico sul qualeadesso si concentrano gli sforzi degli ap-passionati, è arrivata nel corso della"Una Settimana per la Cultura, Spetta-tori dell'antico - In scena la città di Ca-nusium" organizzata dalla FondazioneArcheologica canosina con il Ministeroper i Beni e le attività culturali, Soprin-tendenza per i Beni Archeologici dellaPuglia e il Comune. "Le Terme Ferrara– spiega il giornalista Paolo Pinnelli - so-no un complesso architettonico destina-to ai bagni e alle attività ricreative degliantichi abitanti delle grandi città greche,ellenistiche e romane; furono istituzionipubbliche come gli anfiteatri e i templie assunsero la funzione di luogo di ri-trovo, dove si poteva discutere anche diaffari. The rediscovery of the Ferrara thermalbaths, an outstanding site which hasgenerated tremendous enthusiasmamong archaeologists, happened duringa special week organised by Canosa’s Ar-chaeological Foundation called “A Weekfor Culture, Spectators of ancient times– the city of Canusium” with the back-ing of the Italian Cultural HeritageMinistry, the supervision of the ApulianArchaeological Heritage Service, andthe Municipality of Canosa. “The Fer-rara thermal baths”, explains the writerPaolo Pinnelli, “are a recreational com-plex designed to give the inhabitants ofgreat Greek, Hellenic and Roman citiesthe opportunity to bathe and spendleisure time. They were public institu-tions, much like the amphitheatres andtemples, and were a place for people tomeet and even discuss business. The Fer-rara archaeological complex was identi-fied in January 1967, after buildingsbelonging to the Ferrara family were de-

molished. Only in 1971, following lat-er demolitions, did it become clear thatthese were in fact thermal baths. Only afew of the rooms in this huge complexhave survived to this day. Canosa’s ther-mal baths were paved with mosaics,and the walls were clad with marbleand decorated with fine marble columnsand inlays.”The building probably dates back to theAntonine Age (late 2nd century AD), “atime when the city grew from a mu-nicipium to a colonia, and was giventhe name Colonia Aurelia Augusta PiaCanusium”, says Luigi di Gioia, cura-tor for dromos.it. “This led to much ur-ban renewal, as shown by the archaeo-logical findings, including the Templeof Jupiter the Bull and the aqueduct ofHerod Atticus, which was where thethermal baths got their water from.”Today Canosa has a rich cultural her-itage, which it proudly displays to visi-tors to the city.

THE CELEBRATIONThe centre of the city is lit up with festivelights, and in the cloister of the monastery(now the Town Hall), the wooden statue ofthe Saint is placed on show for the venerationof the people for three whole days. The verypopular “Fiera di San Cataldo” (St. Cathal’sFair) is held on Corso Mazzini, and isfollowed by spectacular fireworks displays.

Saint Cathal: the Irish saint who savedCorato from the plague. And to thank him,every year for the last 600 years the peopleof Corato have celebrated his memory forthree days at the end of August: the citycloses down and then dresses up toremember one of the most terrifyingepisodes in its history.

THE LEGENDIn summer 1483, a violent outbreak of theplague left the population defenceless. Onemorning that summer, St. Cathalappeared to a farmer, one QuirinoTrambotto. Handing him his cloak,Cathal told him that anyone who wore thecloak would be cured. In exchange,Quirino was to watch the two oxen pullinghis cart until they knelt down, and on thatspot he was to build a temple. The farmer saw the two oxen fall to theirknees, unable to get up. He took the cloakand gave it to the sick, who were all cured.St. Cathal was made patron saint of thecity, and the citizens built the monasteryand church of San Cataldo at the placewhere the oxen had fallen.

Nel por-gergli il suo man-to, il Santo gli dis-se che se l’avessefatto indossareagli ammalati,questi sarebberoguariti. In cambiodi ciò il contadi-no avrebbe dovu-to far sorgere untempio nel luogodove i due buoiche tiravano ilcarro si sarebberoinginocchiati. Il contadino videi due buoi del car-ro cadere, rima-nendo inginoc-chiati: prese il

mantello e lo fece indossare agli appesta-ti, che guarirono. San Cataldo venne di-chiarato santo patrono della città, e i cit-tadini eressero nel punto in cui i buoierano caduti il convento e la chiesa diS.Cataldo.

LA FESTALe vie del centro sono abbellite dalle ca-ratteristiche luminarie, e nel chiostro delconvento (oggi Palazzo di Città) la statualignea del Santo è esposta alla venerazio-ne popolare per tre intere giornate. Altraparticolarità risultano essere la frequen-tatissima “Fiera di San Cataldo” lungocorso Mazzini e gli spettacolari giochi pi-rotecnici.

LA STORIANicola nacque a Stiro (Grecia) intorno al1075 da famiglia umile e all’età di 12 an-ni iniziò la sua vita ascetica: fu allonta-nato dalla comunità di Stiro per via del-le sue manifestazioni di amore per Dio,tant’è che fu preso per pazzo. Un belgiorno decise di intraprendere un pelle-grinaggio verso Roma, che lo portò poi

Between the end of July and the beginningof August the city of Trani celebrates its pa-tron Saint, Nicholas the Pilgrim (not to beconfused with the other St Nicholas, Bish-

op of Myra and patron Saint of Bari). To-wards the end of the 11th century, afterwandering through Apulia, he came toTrani holding a big cross in his hands andcrying out Kyrie Eleison - ‘Lord have mer-cy’ ; he touched the souls and consciences ofthe people of Trani who repented and‘went back to God’.

HISTORYNicholas, who was born in Greece in1075 to humble parents, began his asceticlife at the age of 12. His public manifes-tations of love towards God caused him tobe sent away from Greece and accused ofmadness. One day he set off on a pilgrim-age to Rome, and arrived in Apulia – leg-end has it that Nicholas was shipwreckedand landed on the Apulian coast on theback of a dolphin. He visited Otranto,Lecce, and Taranto from where he wasbanished owing to his ‘unusual’ way ofshowing his love for God. In 1094, he arrived in Trani where, ex-hausted by the beatings and hardships hehad suffered, he fell down in front of thecathedral. The people of Trani helped him

with generosity. Instead of chasing himaway, Archbishop Bisantius welcomedhim too. Unfortunately he did not staylong: he fell ill and died a few days later,

on 2nd June1094.Crowds camefrom all around toworship him andsoon miracles be-gan to be reported.Four years later,Nicholas was pro-claimed saint andin his honour thetownspeople builtthe wonderful Ro-manesque cathe-dral which over-looks the city andthe sea.

ad approdare in Puglia – la leggendavuole che per via di un naufragio Nico-la approdò sulle sponde di questa regio-ne su di un delfino – e visitare Otranto,Lecce, Taranto, da dove fu scacciato pervia di questo modo alternativo di mani-festare l’amore per Dio. Nel 1094 arrivòa Trani. Stanco delle percosse e per glistenti, cadde davanti alla Cattedrale diallora. La gente si accostò premurosa.L’Arcivescovo Bisanzio, anziché farloscacciare lo accolse. Purtroppo il suosoggiorno qui non durò a lungo: si am-malò e pochi giorni dopo, il 2 Giugno1094, spirò. Fu un accorrere da ogniparte a venerarlo e subito cominciaronoi prodigi. Quatto anni dopo Nicola fuproclamato Santo e in suo onore fu eret-ta la magnifica Cattedrale romanica cheancora oggi domina sul mare e sulla cit-tà.

nata in Cattedrale la messapresieduta dal Vescovo e inserata le reliquie e la statuaargentea del Santo vanno inprocessione, con tutte leconfraternite di Trani. La se-rata si conclude con 3 spet-tacoli di fuochi d’artificio. Lustri fa era una ricetta molto in voga durante i festeggiamenti di San Nicola.C’era l’usanza, infatti, di fare pic-nic al “Faro” per assistere ai giochi pirotecnici sparati dal molo S. Nicola.

ProcedimentoIn una scodella amalgamare leuova con la polpa macinata di vi-tello, un cucchiaio di pecorinograttugiato, un pizzico di sale epepe.Formare con questo impasto dellepiccole polpettine, e friggerle inolio d’oliva bollente per pochi mi-nuti, poi scolarle ed asciugarle sucarta assorbente.Lessare la pasta e scolarla moltoal dente, passarla sotto l’acquafredda in modo da bloccare la cot-tura, ed amalgamarla in una ca-piente ciotola con la salsa di po-

modoro, altro pecorino, il pro-sciutto cotto spezzettato e le pol-pettine di carne.In una teglia da forno (l'ideale sa-rebbe di terracotta) versare la pa-sta, in ultimo tagliare i pomodori-ni a metà e ricoprire tuta la su-perficie della pasta con la parte in-terna (quella con i semini) rivoltaverso l’alto, spolverare ancora condel pecorino, un po’ di pangratta-to, un filo d’olio ed infornare a 180gradi per 30 minuti circa.Una variante consiste nell'aggiun-gere dei pezzetti di mozzarella al-la pasta.

Ingredientes800g pasta (‘ziti’, large ‘penne’ or‘tortiglioni’)

1,2 kg. tomato sauce

250g veal mince

2 eggs

200g grated pecorino cheese

100g cooked hamSmall cherry tomatoes andbreadcrumbs to taste.

This recipe used to be very popular some years ago during the St. Nicholas’ celebrations. People used to have apicnic by the lighthouse to watch the fireworks from St. Nicholas’ quay.

How to make it:

Mix the eggs and minced vealin a bowl, with a spoonful ofgrated pecorino and a pinch ofsalt and pepper.Make some little meatballs withthis mixture and fry them in hotolive oil for some minutes; thendrain and dry them on kitchenpaper.Boil the pasta and drain it stillfirm, pass it under cold water tostop it cooking, and mix it in alarge bowl with tomato sauce,

more pecorino cheese, bits ofcooked ham and the meatballs.Put the pasta in a baking pan –preferably a terracotta dish –and finally halve the smalltomatoes and use them to cov-er the surface of the pasta withthe seed side up, sprinkle morepecorino cheese over it withbreadcrumbs, olive oil and putit into the oven at 180° forabout 30 minutes.As a tasty variant, add bitsof mozzarella cheese to thepasta.

In the middle ofAugust, Spinaz-zola celebratesthe icon of OurLady of theWood, held in asanctuary a fewkilometres out-side the town.The icon of theVirgin, datingback to the 15thcentury, is attrib-uted to AntonioStabile, an artistwho was born inSpinazzola. Thiscelebration of thepatroness is re-garded as one ofthe most tradi-tional events inthe ‘ImperialApulia’ itinerary,due to its combi-nation of popu-lar folklore and religious spirit.

THE HISTORYLegend has it that a 15th centurywoodcutter found this wooden paintinginside the trunk of a holm oak – a com-mon tree in the area – where it hadprobably been hidden to keep it safe, ata time when religious cults and sacredimages were being persecuted.The holy image was called ‘Our Lady ofthe Wood’ as it was found in an oak-wood. A sanctuary was built on thesame spot, which straddles the borderbetween Apulia and Basilicata. In the19th century, the cult for the Virgingrew as a result of a terrible plague inthe town – the people called on the Vir-gin to save them from the plague andtheir faith was rewarded. In 1914, the sanctuary was unfortu-nately defiled, the icon was destroyed

and was lost until a farmer’s daughterfound its pieces and it was put back to-gether again.

THE CELEBRATIONThe solemn celebrations in honour ofthe Patroness start on the Tuesday fol-lowing Easter Monday, when the iconof the Virgin is brought on a processionfrom the sanctuary to the Cathedral by‘brothers’ chosen by lot.On August 12th, 13th and 14th thecelebrations include musical shows andbrass band performances, as well as re-ligious ceremonies with the crowds stillshowing no sign of diminishing.The most important moment is on Au-gust 14th when a procession accompa-nies the icon of the Virgin, wrapped ina green and golden cloak, to the sanctu-ary. That night the feast ends with spec-tacular fireworks.

LA STORIALa leggenda narra che intorno al XV se-colo, un tagliaboschi rinvenne questodipinto ligneo nel tronco di un alberodi leccio - tipico della zona - dove pro-babilmente era stato nascosto per sal-varlo da sicura rovina, in quel famosoperiodo in cui il culto religioso e l’usodelle immagini sacre era avversato. A questa immagine venne dato l’appel-lativo di Madonna del Bosco, appuntoperché trovata in un bosco di lecci e cer-ri. Successivamente al ritrovamento, inquello stesso punto, a confine tra Pugliae Basilicata, fu eretto un santuario. La venerazione della Vergine è accre-sciuta ancor più nel XIX secolo, allor-

quando nella città scoppiò una violentaepidemia di peste e la popolazione in-vocò la Madonna per sconfiggere il fla-gello; cosa che effettivamente avvenne.Nel 1914, il santuario purtroppo fuprofanato e l’icona fu distrutta e disper-sa, fino a quando un giorno una conta-dina non ne ritrovò i pezzi e la ricom-pose.

LA FESTALe solennità in onore della Santa Patro-na hanno inizio il martedì successivo allunedì dell’Angelo, in cui l’immaginedella Vergine viene portata in proces-sione dai confratelli, scelti secondo unsorteggio, dal Santuario fino in Catte-drale. I festeggiamenti si concludono nei gior-ni 12, 13 e1 4 agosto, giorni in cui si al-ternano occasioni mondane, quali l’esi-bizione di varie orchestre, spettacolimusicali, riti religiosi cui la partecipa-zione della popolazione non accenna adiminuire.Il culmine delle festività si raggiungeperò, il 14, quando i fedeli in proces-sione accompagnano l’effige della Ma-donna, avvolta in un manto verde oro,al Santuario. I festeggiamenti si conclu-dono nella serata dello stesso giornocon i giochi pirotecnici.

Celebritiescome and go on business, on vacation orjust for fun: Milan Football Club coachCarlo Ancelotti was seen in Trani a fewdays ago: they say he was in town for twodays looking for a place to berth his splen-did new yacht which he had built at Mo-nopoli.He may well have been influenced by theimposing prize-winning yacht belongingto the Apulian sofa magnate PasqualeNatuzzi.‘Carletto’, as he is known, was seen walk-ing quietly along the seafront in Trani,but his presence could not go unrecog-nised, and once some local people hadtimidly asked him for an autograph anda photo, the news spread rapidly amongthe Milan football fans in town. Theyheaded straight for the port area but itwas too late – Ancelotti had already leftthough he and his wife were spotted thatnight in a well known restaurant near Li-do Colonna.Summer 2006 will be remembered as amovie summer in Trani: the town hasbeen chosen as the setting for the film‘Bastards’ featuring an all star cast(Gérard Depardieu, Martina Stella, Asia

Argento, Giancarlo Giannini and EvaHenger) which will be in town from July21st till the end of September. It is not thefirst time that film producers have chosenTrani as a setting for their films, and thissummer’s is further confirmation of thetown’s natural vocation as a movie back-drop.Other visitors who have tried (not alwayssuccessfully!) to walk round incognito in-clude the conductor Riccardo Muti, whowas seen walking between the Cathedraland the Castle, and Luciano Benettonwho came to Trani on business - he hadnothing but praise for the local attrac-tions, and promised to be back for his hol-idays.

Vipvanno e vengono per lavoro, per vacan-za, per diletto: non da ultimo, CarloAncellotti, avvistato a Trani nei giorni

Il tecnico del Milan pare abbiatrascorso circa due giorni in questa ma-gnifica città con un fine ben preciso,quello di ricercare un posto barca perfar attraccare il suo nuovo e meraviglio-so yacht acquistato presso i cantieri na-vali di Monopoli. Scelta quanto più az-zeccata se si pensa che nella fantasticainsenatura naturale qual è il porto diTrani, trova ospitalità da un bel po’ dianni il mastodontico e pluripremiatoyacht dell’imprenditore pugliese Pas-quale Natuzzi.Il “Carletto” nazionale è stato visto pas-seggiare sul porto tranese in tutta tran-quillità, ma la sua presenza non è certa-mente passata inosservata a qualche at-tento residente che con prudenza gli siè avvicinato per una foto ed un rapidoautografo. In pochi minuti la notizia siè diffusa a macchia d’olio tra il popolorossonero tranese, che ha affollato la zo-na del porto, ma senza successo. Il tec-nico rossonero, infatti, ha fatto perdereimmediatamente le sue tracce, ricom-parendo la sera stessa in un famoso ri-storante dalle parti del Lido Colonna incompagnia della sua signora. Ma l’estate 2006 sarà per Trani un’esta-te…da film: la città intera sarà set delfilm “Bastardi” con Gerard Depadieu,Martina Stella, Asia Argento, Giancar-lo Giannini, Eva Henger, un cast dav-vero eccellente che sarà in città per le ri-prese dal 21 luglio a fine settembre.Non è la prima volta (tutt’altro) che leproduzioni cinematografiche scelgonoTrani per ambientare i propri film, equello in programma quest’estate con-ferma l’innata…vocazione cinemato-grafica di questa città.Girano come turisti, o almeno ci pro-vano, personaggi noti nelle strade delcentro storico e sul porto di Trani: Ric-cardo Muti, per esempio, qualche setti-mana fa passeggiava fra Cattedrale eCastello, e Luciano Benetton, a Traniper…lavoro, non ha mancato di elogia-re le bellezze del territorio.
