I read somewhere that in Louisiana we have four seasons. There is Almost Summer, Summer, Still Summer and Christmas. Yesterday, we tied a record in Shreveport at 107 degrees. It will be that way all week. If you are competing or practicing skeet or doing anything else in this heat, be sure to stay hydrated. You might want to stop by your local construction safety store and get some magic bandannas. Soak them in ice water. They swell up like a snake. Tie one around your neck and stay cool! The Zone VI Championships will be here shortly! Last year it was very hot in Blue Springs. This year we get to check out Blue Rock Sportsman’s Club in North Little Rock. As of August 1, Clark Hartness reported that he had 87 shooters signed up. If you want to participate, you need to sign up

quickly. Find out how on our Flyers page at www.redchutegazette.com. We have a lot of pictures to share with you this month from the Zone VI Junior Championships and from the Louisiana State Championships. We want to thank Roland Thibodeaux for his photographic contributions. He does a great job. Next month we hope to bring you a report on the Junior World Championships. If you went and you have any digital pictures you can share with our readers, please send them to me at [email protected]. We have a link to the scores on our Flyers page at www.redchutegazette.com if you want to see how it went. In that vein, we are always looking for people who will serve as Club Reporters for their local club. If you are interested in free publicity promoting skeet shoots at your club please check out our offer on the last page of this issue. We would love to help. Many of you have worked with youth to get them involved in our shooting sports. Thank you! Please keep that effort up. It has never been needed more than now. I want to extend a personal thank you to everyone who contributed shells to Skeeter’s Bucket and who participated in the Skeeter’s Bucket fundraiser this year. Through that effort, we raised over $2,200 to help send Team Louisiana to the Junior World. Until we meet again in these pages or on the skeet field [perhaps at the Zone VI Championships], I am wishin’ you 3 @ 8. Most Sincerely,

A Word From The Publisher

The Secret By: Paul “L.P.” Giambrone, III

Most shooters want to think there is a magic formula out there to make them a championship shooter overnight. I have seen it way too many times to ignore this subject. Shooters will think the new set of lenses for their glasses is the answer or getting that new reload recipe is going to buy them that last Low 6.

While equipment is extremely important, equipment is usually not the answer to getting that last target you are looking for. There usually is a magic formula, but it does not take place overnight and is probably not what you think. I hear questions like:

• What type of gun/tubes do you shoot? • What type of ammo do you use? • What chokes do you shoot? • What glasses do you wear?

These are just a few questions people ask and believe me there are plenty more. I am very humbled that people ask me what equipment I use, but the trick is that I have found a combination of things that I am comfortable with and items that I feel are the best on the market. However, not everyone can swing a 10 and a half pound Kolar Max skeet gun. It is what works for me. I can give you my exact setup but these things are not the most important. What is the most important thing for you is to find what you are comfortable and confident with. Shooters that get bogged down with the tiniest of details usually end up driving themselves, their spouses, and other shooter’s crazy about these small things. I have heard too many discussions about chokes, shot size, and different ammo velocities. The difference in .001 or .002 on paper is not much at the distances we shoot in skeet (assuming that the chokes are cut correctly). Now, if you go from a .000 to a .010 choke, then you will notice a difference in the pattern. However, at 20 yards, the difference is only a couple of inches. I know you are thinking “well that might just buy me a target here or there.” In my 20 years in this sport, I think I have witnessed someone miss a target by an inch maybe a couple of times…maybe a few inches on occasion, but the majority of the time when we miss (myself included), it is because we make a terrible mental or physical error which causes us to miss the target by a couple of feet! Therefore, in most cases, it is not the chokes or the arrow, but the Indian.

Page 5

The Secret (Continued) Solution: Find a set of chokes that you are comfortable and confident with and stick with them! However, if you change ammo or your reloading recipe, you may want to double check the pattern. Again, most of the time when we miss, we are not talking about an inch or two so more than likely the current chokes would be fine. I have tighter chokes so my pattern is smaller than the average, but that is what gives me confidence. Ammo is the next topic, and for the record, I do prefer Remington STS #9 shot target loads for my competitive shooting. Yes, I know there have been plenty of discussions about #8 vs. #9 shot and there are pros and cons to each one. However, it really doesn’t matter. It is what the shooter prefers and is comfortable and confident with and nothing more than that. You must also have confidence in the loads that you are shooting and should not have to wonder if the next shell is going to go off or not. In my case, I prefer the #9s because I have a tighter than average choke and pattern, but mainly because #9s have more BBs working for me than #8s. Does this mean that it is wrong for you to use #8s? Absolutely not! Again, it is what you have confidence in and once you find that sweet shell, stick with it! Also, different velocity speeds come into play, or do they? The STS load for the sub-gauges is 1200 FPS (feet per second). I have had questions about “lead changes” when shooting different velocity shells. If you can literally see an inch or two precisely at 21 yards, my hat is off to you. For us humans, it is impossible to visually see a difference in your lead when the velocity varies 100 or 200 FPS with your face on the stock of a shotgun swinging with a target that is 21 yards away from us.

Solution: Do not get bogged down in the technical mumbo jumbo. Find a velocity that you are happy with and that can give you consistent results. Stick with what you are confident in. The common denominator with any equipment is to find things you are comfortable with and have confidence in. If you aren’t sure if the next shell is going to go BANG, you might want to get better ammo or get your gun serviced.

Page 6

The Secret (Continued) While equipment is a very important factor, it is no substitute for looking in the mirror and evaluating your mechanical and mental games. Good mechanics will get you far in this sport, further than any piece of equipment, but having a solid mental and physical game will take you to your highest potential. Most of the time, shooters will have a good combination and think something better is out there and make a switch. More often than not, they will find themselves worse off than before because they think that getting a new piece of equipment will make all of the difference (putting their confidence in the wrong place). The secret is to work on your mechanics and your mental game and to have confidence in your own game and self. That will bring you to the next level, not the equipment alone. If you have any questions or comments, please email me directly at [email protected] and visit www.breakmoretargets.com for more information! Please check the website for upcoming tournaments and clinics in your area… Next scheduled clinic will be in Medina, OH on August 9-10 at Hill N Dale Gun Club. Next stop will be in Delaware, OH at the Blackwing Shooting Center August 11-14. Indiana Gun Club will also host a clinic on August 16-17. Please email or call me or the local organizer directly for more information about these clinics.

Tip of the month: Remember, there is always more than one way to do something. So find which combination of things works best for you and stick with that combination. What works best for you may not work best for someone else, so find your combination to success and stick with it!

Dining on The Road

Recently, the Frey family took a little trip to California to visit PFC Michael Frey who is stationed at the Marine Base at 29 Palms in the Mojave Desert North of Palm Springs. After some research, we decided to rent a cabin in the San Bernardino Mountains near Big Bear Lake. This area is a ski resort community in the Winter months and a weekend getaway spot for folks who live near Los Angeles. In researching the restaurants available for our enjoyment, I discovered El Jacalito which is located in the “Village” which is the part of this little community with all of the shops and souvenir stores. My family loves Tex-Mex so we were anxious to

checkout the California style Mexican fare. My research turned up mostly positive reviews for El Jacalito. The only really negative one was from a guy who complained because the wait staff did not speak English. Since our daughter Kathleen is a Spanish teacher, we were not worried about potential language barriers. While driving through the village looking for the restaurant, we asked one of the locals for directions. The lady we asked gave us directions and then added “excellent choice!” Even though it was July, the temperature was mild enough (at 8,000 feet) that we sat outside on the patio. We were served chips (as we are accustomed to), but we had to go inside to get our salsa from the Salsa Bar. We got the hot and not the mild. It was hot, but not too hot for us and quite tasty. One review I had read really praised the salsa at El Jacalito. I could see (or taste) why.

The menu is quite broad. El Jacalito is a family owned and operated restaurant serving traditional Mexican dishes made from scratch. They serve Carne Asada, Fajitas, Chili Rellenos, Tamales, Tacos and numerous shrimp and fish dishes. The food I had was good. Perhaps not quite as flavorful as the Tex-Mex we are used to, but very good. So, if you find yourself in the Big Bear Lake, California area and you need a Mexican food fix, you will want to check out El Jacalito. I’ll give it 4 forks on a 5 fork scale.

In July, the Lafayette Skeet Academy, Inc. hosted the Zone VI Junior Championships to give Zone VI Junior, Sub Junior and Collegiate shooters an opportunity to compete in preparation for the Junior World Championships. Fifteen shooters participated in this 3 day shoot, held at David and Mary Hebert’s Farm near Kaplan, Louisiana. As you will see in the following photos, everyone had a great time and took advantage of this opportunity to hone their competitive skills.

In 2010, Rose City Flying Clays held the inaugural Freedom 500. The Freedom 500 took the place of the old Tyler Gun Club “Cold Duck” tournament. We really wanted to add a patriotic theme to our new signature shoot. We just wanted everyone to have a great time, and I think they did. Everyone said they really liked the dinner and the fireworks display so we have continued that theme.

The 2011 Louisiana State Skeet Championships were held July 15th - 17th at David and Mary Hebert’s Farm, the home of Lafayette Skeet Academy, Inc. near Kaplan, Louisiana. This year we had 49 shooters competing for honors, glory, medals and trophies. This shoot is a closed shoot, available only to qualifying resident members of the LSSA. Being a social bunch, we also hosted a simultaneous shoot for our out of state friends and others who do not qualify to shoot in the LSSA Championships. That shoot is called the “Bubba Open”. This year, we had one shooter who shot in the Bubba Open. Junior shooter Cohen Holomon took home the trophy for Doubles Champion with a smoking’ 98. The Runner Up honors went to Trey Hawthorne.

LSSA Hall of Fame Inductees

This year the Louisiana Skeet Shooting Association inducted three new members into the LSSA Hall of Fame. Inductees are nominated by LSSA Members to recognize their Skeet shooting accomplishments and service to promote Skeet shooting in Louisiana. This year's inductees are, Paul Giambrone, Jr., Charles “The Hammer” Richardson and Lloyd Huval, Sr. Pictured above from left to right are Paul Giambrone, Jr, Charles Richardson and Butch Huval who proudly accepted the Hall of Fame plaque on behalf of his father who passed away in 1996. Paul Giambrone, Jr. shot skeet from 1979 to 2006. He shot 152,000 lifetime targets and accumulated 11+ state titles, numerous All State First Teams, set nine world records, made 7 All American Teams, 3 400 X400’s, one Open World Championship and several Concurrent World Titles. Paul has served the LSSA as a Club Representative on the LSSA Board, a Director-At –Large on that board and as Secretary-Treasurer of the LSSA. Although he no longer shoots competitively, Paul manages the South Louisiana Gun Club where he has served for many years.

LSSA Hall of Fame Inductees Charles “The Hammer'' Richardson has been a member of the LSSA since 1989. Charles is still active in the sport. He has competed in 18 State Championships having won many state titles, including the 20 gauge Championship in 1996, 2004 and 2007 and the 12 gauge Championship in 2010. Charles was selected to the 2010 Class All American Team. The Hammer was the 12 gauge High Average Leader in Louisiana for 2010. Charles is a valuable member of his home club in West Monroe and has served the LSSA as President, Club Representative and At-Large-Director. Charles is a tough competitor, but always a sportsman. His love and respect for the game, as well as his polite, respectful demeanor make it easy to see why he is considered a to be a “True Southern Gentleman”. And a treasure to our sport. Lloyd Huval, Sr. began his Skeet shooting carier in Baton Rouge in 1965. He continued to shoot until age 80 when vision problems caused him to stop. He passed away at age 82, having lived all but three of those years in Louisiana. Mr. Huval competed in at least 25 State Championships. He was the 1974 and 1977 12 gauge Senior World Champion. He also made the 1976, 1977 and 1978 All American Senior Teams. Mr. Huval made the Louisiana All State Teams in 1975, 1976 and 1977. In 1987 and 1988 he was the LSSA Veteran High Average Leader in all gauges and HOA. In 1992 he was the Veteran High Average Leader. In 1971 he was appointed the states first Chief Referee and trained and certified numerous referees. He served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Baton Rouge Gun Club and as a Director for six years. He also served as Secretary-Treasurer for the Jean Lafitte Gun Club for four years. Mr. Huval volunteered his time and energy to the LSU Skeet classes and shot skeet from Texas to the Bahamas. He always demonstrated good sportsmanship and shooting etiquette under all situations. In his acceptance speech on behalf of his Dad, Butch Huval said Mr. Huval’s shooting philosophy was “If you can’t shoot hard, play hard”.

The banquet ended with a bit of fun and fundraising for Team Louisiana. Last year, the Red Chute Gazette sponsored “Skeeter’s Bucket” which was a lot of fun and raised a little money for the youth shooters representing Louisiana at the Junior World. This year, Team Louisiana would have about 10 shooters attending the Junior World in Nashville. We wanted to help those kids (and their parents) out. Once again, the Red Chute Gazette sponsored “Skeeter’s Bucket”. Those of you who attended the Briley Louisiana Open may have seen Skeeter’s Bucket on a table with a sign asking for donations of new shotgun shells in any gauge. Between that shoot and others, and the generous donations of many, we were able to fill Skeeter’s Bucket to the brim. At the LSSA State Championships, members of Team Louisiana manned the bucket selling guesses on the number of shells in the bucket. Their efforts raised over $300 from the guessers. As the sponsor of Skeeter’s Bucket, I was the only individual who new how many shells were in the bucket. Last year, Roland Thibodeaux guess the exact number of shells in the bucket. You might expect a pharmacist would be good at counting shells, since he counts pills for a living. Wonder of wonders, if this year, Sandra Thibodaux [Roland’s wife] guessed the closest. Sandra donated the bucket of shells back to Team Louisiana which enabled us to auction the bucket off. The auction was quite competitive and brought a high bid of $700 from Lynn Fournet. When the auction was over, LP Giambrone, Ivey Lieux and Burt Hoffpauir chipped in another $1,200 which brought our total to something just North of $2,200. When you add that to $2,200 from Lafayette Skeet Academy, Inc. and about $260 raised from auctioning off a print that had been donated, Team Louisiana was well funded. Next month we hope to report on their many successes at the Junior World.

This year’s LSSA Skeet Championships went pretty smoothly. I don’t recall any fights, fussing or complaints. President Gordon Benoit and Secretary-Treasurer Walter L. Williams, III did a great job preparing. Pre-Registration was handled almost completely by E-Mail and fax by the Red Chute Gazette. Gordon Benoit implemented a new registration process that Debbie and I helped with. David O’Quinn handled the shoot software and managed the data. Mike Vickers wore several hats. He served as Chief Referee and, with the help of his Dad Cedric, handled the score board. Cindy Benoit, Dee Hawthorne and Sandie Williams did a great job decorating for the banquet. Debbie Frey coordinated the banquet tent cards. The Members of the Lafayette Skeet Academy, Inc. hosted the shoot and had the facilities in top shape. Referees Tom Rushing, Manny Pilgrim , Nathan Boyd and Carla McNamee did an excellent job. The Directors provided some really nice door prizes for the banquet. We were pleased to have a couple more shooters than last year. All in all, I would say it was a very good shoot. Maybe we will see you there next year!

Doubles Champion James A. George

Doug Frey

James George posted a 48 out of 50 to claim the Doubles event Champion honors. Charles Richardson took Runner Up with a 46. This day The Hammer was feeling like a “Brides Maid”. That’s all right Charles, you’ll get ‘em next time!

Our attendance was a bit off for this shoot. I think the State Championship really worked on some of our regulars and they needed a break. The 14 who did attend seemed to have a good time, even in the July heat. We lunched on “Big Sammiches” from Wal-Mart. To cool us down, Debbie Frey made an Ice Cream Sandwich Pie with ice cream sandwiches cool whip and pecans. No one left hungry. Paul Williamson, Kip Kiplinger and Ricky Grimsly did a great job refereeing. Thank you guys for standing in the sun so we could have some fun! Thank you Debbie for handling registration and dessert! We have three more shoots at Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club on Barksdale AFB this year. We hope you will come shoot with us.

The Red Chute Gazette Deal

Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will include flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via E-Mail. That’s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events. We are happy to offer a special package deal to clubs that support our magazine. If your club buys an ad in the Red Chute Gazette for a full year (1/4 page or larger), we will not only include your ad in 12 issues, we will include any shoot flyers (please limit flyers to two pages) for sporting clays, trap or other events your club promotes in those issues at no additional charge.

These rates have been substantially discounted for gun clubs. Other commercial advertisers should request a rate quote. To take advantage of this service contact Doug Frey by phone at (318) 635-6218 or via E-Mail at [email protected]. . .
