We have another big issue for you this month. There are lots of photos from contributors who participated in the Big Blue Open and the Briley Louisiana Open. Thank you Jon Lindsay, Roland Thibodeaux and James Holomon. The Briley Louisiana Open was everything I expected it to be. Those who went had a blast and ate like Cajun Kings. We devoted our Dining on the Road segment to the food at that shoot. Warning, this issue of the Red Chute Gazette has a very high calorie content! If you have young shooters Sub Junior, Junior or Collegiate, encourage them to signup for the Zone 6 Junior Skeet Championships which will be held at Lafayette Skeet Academy, Inc. on David & Mary Hebert’s Farm near Kaplan, Louisiana. In our May issue, we announced our plans to add a page to the www.RedChuteGazette.com website to honor those men and women who are serving our nation in the Armed Forces. I have been thinking it would be nice to have a page on which we could post pictures of the men and women to honor them and to invite others who visit that page to pray for their safety and success as they strive to protect us and bring freedom to others. If you have sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, cousins, parents, friends or neighbors that are serving our country in the Armed Forces, please send us a digital photo of them, their names, rank, branch of service and your name as sponsor and we will post that information on the website. So far I have received pictures from one shooter and we hope to get those up soon. I still think there are others in the skeet community that feel the way I do and will want to participate in this effort. Change By: Paul “L.P.” Giambrone, III

The great Albert Einstein once said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.” While many of you are smiling right now because you have heard this phrase before, plenty of us fall in this trap. When struggling on the skeet field at a particular event in a tournament, most will try and keep doing the same things over and over again expecting a different result—see Einstein’s quote above. On the other hand, some of us as soon as we miss we want to hurry up, jump ship, and try something different right away. While every shooter is different and must assess their needs, there is a fine line in where you need to change something or stick it out. This applies for the League shooter or the weekend warrior that is struggling at their particular event or a random Sunday. It comes down to the human way to resist change because we have our routines that we like and do not want to change anything. How can you get better at something if you keep doing the same things over and over and are not happy with the results you are getting? Many of us want to continually get better at this game or anything that we do in life, but we are always resistant to change—or maybe you’ll give it a try but the first time it doesn’t work you switch back to your old ways…I am sure you have heard of the saying “sometimes you have to take a step back to take two steps forward.” When going through change, this is often the case. Our scores will suffer slightly for the short term, but over the long haul they will increase. Keep in mind, during the middle of the skeet season is not the best time to do any major overhauls on your game because anytime that you change something dramatic, it takes time for you to adjust and get used to the change. Save these types of change for the off-season where you have weeks or even months to work out the kinks instead of days between tournaments. However, if you are struggling with a particular target, it is advised to do an evaluation on what is going on and fix the problem before progressing forward. The first question that I ask myself when I struggle with a particular shot is, “Was I ready for the target?” I do not mean just physically ready, I mean mentally ready for the shot as well. In other words, did I go through my entire pre-shot routine (which includes foot position, hold point, look point, and break point)? Were my eyes set when I called pull? These items are all included in this question… Was I completely ready for the shot?

Change When people change, usually it is done in the wrong way and that is another reason why we are so resistant to change! The bottom line is that when you do choose to adjust and make a change (i.e. move your hold point out or look further back for the target), the key is to adjust in very small increments, such as moving your hold point out 1 foot, not 5 feet! This way even if you make the wrong move, it shouldn’t cause you to miss because we are only talking about a foot. This method also prevents you from over-correcting the problem as well. Keep in mind that most of the time when we struggle to catch or see a target our guns are generally too high or too close to the house—solution is to move out or down a foot, 2 feet at most (in general).

How about the major overhauls and changes to your game? Let’s say you have hit a plateau and are stuck at 22 and an instructor comes along and changes a couple of things and you start shooting 21s or even slip into the high teens for a few weeks until you get adjusted then start shooting 24s and 25s, where is the problem? The problem is that most shooters do not get to that stage because they quit early or go back to their old ways. If you are going to take instruction from someone, you must have trust in that person in that they know what is best for your game. Here is what happens, when you are trying something new, you have a tendency to become more focused on the new move rather than breaking the target. This is why our scores take a slight dip in the beginning because our conscious mind is more focused on training our body to make this new move. Once the new move becomes second nature, that is when the scores go back up and above the old ones because you no longer have to make a conscious effort to make that move—it happens naturally. Also, I have heard shooters tell their instructors that they want to get better and when the instructor shows them a way to shoot the target, the shooter’s immediate response is “oh, I tried that and it doesn’t work for me.” I realize it is difficult to take instruction at times, but sometimes instructors are looking to see how you react and move to the target to come up with a better way to show you. One of the ways to make these assessments is to have the shooter try multiple things to see what works best for that particular shooter. There are multiple ways to break targets on the skeet field; it is not a one size fits all type sport… An excellent example of this is hold points. A very good starting point is 1/3 of the way to the center stake; however, this does not mean that everyone should hold at 1/3. Some shooters need to hold outside of that point, some slightly closer in, some people can hold a 1/3 on some shots but not on others. Just about every aspect of skeet shooting is just like this…there is no one set way of doing something; there are multiple ways to get the same end result.

Keep in mind when taking a lesson with an instructor to have an open mind and give it an honest try. Most of the time when learning something new, it takes weeks of solid and hard practice to get used to the adjustment…not a couple of rounds.

Page 9 Hat Shoot Event! While shooting at the Briley Louisiana Open I heard a ruckus on a neighboring field as shooters shot the hat of someone who had just shot their first straight. As it turned out, the hat belonged to Remington J. Wheaton who just shot his first 100 straight in the 12 gauge. The picture at the left was taken after Remington finished a shoot-off for 12 gauge Champion with nine o t h e r s h o o t e r s . Remington and Stewart McCoin were the last two guys standing when Remington finally dropped a bird and Stewart took the 12 Gauge Champion honors. It was quite a sight to behold and Runner Up honors are pretty darn good when you are shooting with competitors of this caliber.

This months Dining on the Road article will cover the cuisine encountered on our trip to South Louisiana to participate in the Briley Louisiana Open. Debbie and I arrived in Lafayette early as I had some business to do in Lafayette and Lake Charles, Louisiana before the shoot. On Thursday evening before the shoot festivities began on Friday, we went out to the Lafayette Skeet Academy, Inc. on David and Mary Hebert’s farm near Kaplan. After shooting a few practice rounds, I visited with other shooters who had come in early. At about 7:30 PM David rounded up a crowd and we all went to Richard’s Seafood Patio in Abbeville. David likes to eat their boiled crabs. I had crab cakes which were good and a cup of very tasty seafood gumbo.

This restaurant is owned by Calvin (Red) Richard [pronounced Reeshard] and is known for boiled crabs, crawfish and shrimp in season. They have a buffet that looked pretty good, but most everyone ordered of the menu. Prices are reasonable but there can be long lines during busy nights. This night, they were short handed and our waitress really had to work hard. The food took a while to get there but it was good and everyone seemed to have a great time.

On the way out of the parking lot, Debbie took the picture above. That dark bump on the roof over the door is a raccoon that hangs around to clean the garbage cans.

This shoot has become legendary for the fine Cajun cuisine. The menu to the left was given to me by David Hebert. There were a number of dishes that didn’t make that list, but did make it to our palates. There was some fried Redfish and all the ice cream you could eat. There was also a frozen margarita machine that seemed pretty popular. Words just don’t do it justice so we will show you lots of photographic evidence in these pages.

If you missed the 2010 Briley Louisiana Open, you really missed one of the most fun shoots in the sport. As you read earlier in this issue, regardless of your scores, you had to enjoy the food and hospitality. This year, the weatherman cooperated and we had no rain delays. The temperatures were warm, but certainly not as hot as they can be this time of year. Contestants came from far and wide. You can see by the State flags waiving on the balcony of the club house that there was representation from at least 13 states. I think there are more around the corner you can’t see, including England.

The Lafayette Skeet Academy, Inc. is a Non-Profit Corporation. The money raised at this shoot is used to promote youth skeet programs. Briley Manufacturing donated a beautiful antique English 12 gauge hammer gun to be used as a prize in a fund raiser. Participants bought squares at $25 each for

a chance to win this gun. David Hebert is shown below instructing a couple of youngsters on how to draw cards that would be used to pick the winner.

And the winner was Gayle Osborne who very generously donated the gun back to be auctioned off to raise even more money for the kids. The bidding was heated and the gun finally went to Willie Taylor for $2,100. That plus the $2,500 raised in the sale of squares brought the total to $4,600. Thank you Briley Manufacturing, Gayle Osborne and Willie Taylor for your generosity!

Stars and Stripes Cake Debbie Frey

1 box white cake mix (water, oil and eggs that are called for on box) 1 container vanilla frosting or 1 large container Cool Whip 1/3 cup fresh blueberries 1 pint fresh strawberries Make cake in a 13x9 pan per instructions on the box. Cool cake completely before frosting with icing or Cool Whip. Arrange berries on the frosted cake to make a flag design.

Greetings to our Red Chute Gazette families and friends! With the scorching summer heat bearing down upon us, it seems an appropriate time to review facts about heat exposure. We have all seen – some of us first hand – the debilitating effects of too much sun and fun and how quickly we move from being a little too hot to “some serious stuff”! First we should differentiate between “heat exhaustion” and “heat stroke”: Heat exhaustion occurs during work or play in a hot, humid environment and body fluids are lost through sweating; thus causing the body to overheat. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

♦ Pale, moist skin

♦ Sweating profusely

♦ Muscle cramps or pain

♦ Feeling faint or dizzy

♦ Headache, weakness, thirst, and/or nausea

♦ Core temperature elevation more than 100 degrees F and increased pulse rate

Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition where the individual’s cooling system stops working and the internal body temperature rises to levels where brain damage or other body organ damage occurs. Symptoms of heat stroke include:

♦ Abnormal mental status (dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, or loss of consciousness)

♦ Flushed, hot and dry skin (although it may be moist initially from previous sweating)

♦ Slightly elevated blood pressure at first, then falls later

♦ May experience hyperventilation

♦ Core temperature of 105 degrees F or more

If heat stroke is suspected, call an ambulance immediately and begin cooling methods.

(Continued) Basic first aid for heat exhaustion:

♦ Move to a cool, shaded area ♦ Give cool water or sports drink; salty snacks are also

appropriate, if tolerated. ♦ Loosen or remove clothing ♦ Apply cool water to skin ♦ Do not use an alcohol rub ♦ Do not give any beverages containing alcohol or caffeine

If any of the following are present, the individual should go to the hospital: ♦ Loss of consciousness, confusion, or delirium ♦ Chest or abdominal pain ♦ Inability to drink fluids ♦ Continuous vomiting ♦ Temperature that is rising despite attempts to cool or temperature greater than 104 degrees F ♦ Any person with serious medical conditions Other points to remember: ♦ Infants and elderly are more likely to have heat related illnesses ♦ Certain medications increase the likelihood of adverse effects (i.e. antihistamines, blood pressure medicines, fluid pills, medicines for depression ♦ Individuals with health issues are less able to handle heat; diabetics dehydrate faster than non diabetics


And finally, a few tips to consider to prevent overheating:

♦ Avoid drinks containing alcohol or caffeine ♦ Replenish fluids frequently, preferably water of sports drinks ♦ Take frequent “cooling off” breaks ♦ Wear a hat, especially in direct sunlight ♦ Pay attention to warning signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion

June 19, 2010 The Big Blue Open was the hottest shoot we have had at Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club this skeet year. With temperatures in the high 90’s and very few breezes to cool the competitors we really appreciated the big electric fans and cabana tents that were put out to create a little shade. The crepe myrtle trees planted by club member Gary Sullivan have finally gotten big enough to produce some refuge on a hot sunny day. The competition was heated too, as 18 competitors vied for honors. Most shot 20 gauge and .410 with some trying their hand at Doubles and a few at 12 gauge.

Dennis Burnham [shown above] smoked 99 targets to cinch the 20 Gauge Champion Honors. The Runner Up honors went to Collin Matthews who shot 98 in his first 20 Gauge registered targets at this shoot.

The AA1 and AA2 honors were settled by a shoot-off between Larry Kay and Charles “The Hammer” Richardson. Larry and Charles are shown in the picture on the right. Larry [in the red shirt] won this duel.


James Curlee and Cohen Holomon had a shoot-off that went five stations to settle the C3 20 Gauge honors. I think Cohen enjoyed that more than James. James on the left, is showing his game face. Cohen was not the least bit intimidated and took the honors.

James George crushed 97 targets with the little gun claiming the .410 Bore Championship outright. It would seem that his polishing work on his forcing cones may have given him an edge this day. James’ scores may be his own best commercial.

Charles Richardson and Larry Kay both posted 96’s in the .410 event. This time, The Hammer prevailed in the shoot-off taking RU and pushing Larry Kay to 3rd. This was a day for shoot-offs. Collin Matthews and Cohen Holomon both posted 77s in their very first .410 competitions. This put them in a shoot-off for D1 honors. Cohen had just finished going toe to toe with James Curlee in a 20 gauge shoot-off. This time, it was Collin’s turn to claim the victory. As you can see in the photo on the left, Collin and Cohen really enjoy this shoot-off thing.

“Wild Bill” McIntyre and The Hammer

“Wild Bill” McIntyre and Charles “The Hammer” Richardson cruised through the doubles dropping only 2 birds each. Bill managed to snatch this victory from “The Hammer’s” grasp in the shoot-off. It really was a day for shoot-offs. There would have been more, but some folks just didn’t want to stay out in the heat.



Lloyd Webb cooked us up a great lunch consisting of spaghetti with a home sauce with chicken, Italian sausage and pepperoni, salad and garlic bread. Lloyd is shown in the picture at the right making up fresh brewed tea. Thank you Lloyd for you culinary contributions! Debbie Frey made up some fresh chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies to satisfy our sweet teeth. Thank you Debbie!

In the picture on the right, Sandra Thibodeaux draws the “Split-The-Pot” winner. Lloyd Webb won and generously donated his winnings back to the Youth Shooter’s Fund. The proceeds will be used to help pay expenses for our youth shooters to the State Championship or Zone 6 Junior Championship events.

Help Wanted We have immediate openings for the following positions: ♦ Chef – Chef needed to prepare plan and prepare food for special events with 5 to 150

participants. Must be able to work on a tight budget with less than optimal facilities and equipment.

♦ Sous Chef – Needed to assist the Chef in preparation and serving food at special events for 5

to 150 participants. Good dishwashing skills a plus. ♦ Marketing Manager – Needed to promote participation in special events (skeet shoots) and

to solicit corporate sponsorship (prizes). Must be a skilled communicator with the ability to maximize results through social networking, Internet and other means with virtually no budget for expenses.

♦ Skeet Czar (aka Skeet Chairman, Manager or MIC (Man in Charge) – Needed to oversee the

management functions of a registered skeet program. Those functions are Planning, Organizing, Staffing and Controlling. Qualified candidates may be male or female. In the event of the later, she would be the Czarina, Manager or FIC (Female in Charge).

♦ Registrar- Responsible for registering contestants and collecting the appropriate fees and

dues. Candidate should be familiar with NSSA Classification systems and shoot management software (if lucky). Candidate needs to be able to do simple math (addition, subtraction and averaging).

♦ Scheduler – Responsible for squadding shooters. Qualified candidates must be a master at

coordinating, placating, and diplomacy. A PhD in Psychology would be helpful. ♦ Referee – Must be knowledgeable of the rules of the game of American Skeet, a fast thinker

and have the ability to take command of the skeet field to which he or she is assigned. Candidates should have good eyesight and be physically able to stand in the hot sun for hours. Experience dealing with difficult people a plus.

♦ Scorekeeper – The scorekeeper manages the scoreboard, evaluating the results,

determining the winners in accordance to NSSA rules and posting those results for all to see.

♦ Mentor/Coach/Recruiter – Encourages, teaches and recruits new shooters to the sport. ♦ Helper – The person selected for this position must be able to help or fill in for any of the

individuals listed above on a moments noticed. There are many opening for this position. Pay – None of these positions pay monetary wages. The Red Chute Gazette Deal

Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas. These states comprise Zone VI within the National Skeet Shooting Association. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will include flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via E-Mail. That’s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events. We are happy to offer a special package deal to clubs that support our magazine. If your club buys an ad in the Red Chute Gazette for a full year (1/4 page or larger), we will not only include your ad in 12 issues, we will include any shoot flyers (please limit flyers to two pages) for sporting clays, trap or other events your club promotes in those issues at no additional charge.
