INTRODUCTION

The advent of the Research AssessmentExercise in UK Universities has led toincreasing attention being placed upon

converting scholarly activity into peer re-viewed articles, to disseminate research to thewider academic, practitioner and policy mak-

ing community. This briefing paper seeks toidentify and discuss the main academic publi-cation sources available to authors in the‘green business and sustainability’ arena. Theaim of this paper is to firstly facilitate a widerdebate on the role of such journals in themanagement/business subject area and re-search assessment. The second aim is toprovide new, and perhaps established, re-searchers with a summative overview of theirpublication options.

METHODOLOGY

An initial scanning exercise was undertakenby searching a range of citation indexes forarticles that contained both ‘environment(al)’and ‘business’, or ‘sustainable/sustainability’keywords. The journals in which these arti-cles were published were complied to forman initial list.

Those journals that were primarily (aspart of the remit of the journal) not focusedon some aspect of environmental manage-ment, sustainability, ethics, environmentalpolicy or practice were excluded. In thesecases ‘environmental’ articles had tended tooccur as a special edition or as one-off arti-cles. Only those journals with a primary fo-cus in each edition on environmental/sustainability topics were considered. In ad-dition those journal titles that were primar-ily scientific or technical, rather than from

D. HOLT

an interdisciplinary environmental science/management perspective, were also ex-cluded.

Additional publications were identified bya keyword search of Ulrich’s online database(Spring 2000) using assorted Boolean combi-nations. The search ‘corporate environmentalmanagement’ achieved 30 hits and ‘environ-mental management and business’ achieved281 hits. Finally publications of which theauthor had personal knowledge that werenot identified in the search process were ex-amined using hardcopy and/or Internet web-sites.

The material detailed in this table is com-plied from three sources: firstly hardcopysample editions of the journal in question;secondly from the website provided by thepublisher. In those cases were no recenthard copy was available the website onlywas used. The reference for each source isprovided by the publisher’s website address. Finally each journal title that had missinginformation, which was not available inhardcopy or on the internet site, was identi-fied in the Ulrich Directory to complete thedata in the table.

Limitations

The data presented does not comprise adefinitive list of all journals that would ac-cept an environmental management/sustain-ability type paper. By using electronic searchengines, as well as information provided byhomepages on the world-wide web, publica-tions that are not covered in the electronicmedium are not well represented. The dataprovided, particularly in the ‘brief’ section ofthe table, is summarized (or transcribed di-rectly) from the journal’s own aims and ob-jectives. Therefore the information, par-ticularly in the brief, will not fully representthe breadth of material the journal accepts,or may reflect a bias due to the editing pro-cess.

As with any selection process an elementof bias and subjectivity is incorporated.Without a detailed content analysis at an in-dividual journal level, of the percentages ofarticles in different categories, the judgement

of whether to include or exclude a journalfrom the list remains subjective. Readers areencouraged to use this paper as a startingpoint in their publication process but tocheck the journal homepages of those theyare interested in.

WHAT TYPE OF PUBLICATION?

Authors have a choice of publishing materialin a range of different medium. These differ-ent types of publications are broadly catego-rized as

 trade/practitioner magazines, un-refereed conference/exhibition pro-

ceedings, refereed conference proceedings, refereed journal articles and books and book chapters.

In RAE terms it is the peer reviewed outletsthat are deemed to be of ‘higher value’. Al-though it might be that the trade publications, books and conference proceedings may gainthe greatest exposure in terms of absolutenumbers, there is increasing pressure for aca-demics to publish their research and confer-ence material in national and internationallyrecognized journals.

Unfortunately scholars in the ‘greening in-dustry and sustainability’ arena often havedifficulty gaining acceptance from their ownresearch managers in business schools forpublications outside mainstream business andmanagement journals. If they choose not topublish their works in the mainstream jour-nals, authors will often choose to publish inthose journals that focus specifically upontheir field(s) of interest. Many of these jour-nals do not appear in the various manage-ment citation indexes, leaving environmentalresearchers in the difficult position of defend-ing their choice of journal above that of a‘traditional’ business or management publica-tion. There is anecdotal evidence of staff beingencouraged, or instructed, to only publish inthose journals that appear on a department’sunofficial ‘hit list’. Such ranking schemesrarely, if ever, include environmental manage-ment type publications.

PUBLISH OR PERISH

WHERE?

One of the most difficult decisions of anyresearcher is which journal, publicationor venue they should approach in orderto disseminate their work. The requirementto meet internal or external publicationtargets, based on number and/or target pub-lication, adds an additional layer of compli-cation.

The definitive source on publications ap-pears to be Ulrich’s International Directory, where details on every journal, trademagazine, newsletter and other subscriptionbased publications from around the worldare provided. The use of a searchable onlinedatabase allows authors to look up a specifictitle or search a subject area. There are alsopublications that provide details that helpprospective authors decide which journal toapproach in terms of turn-around time, per-centage acceptance and percentage invitedcontributions, amongst other criteria. TheCabell’s Directories are examples of these inthe business, management, marketing, ac-counting, economics and finance areas (Ca-bell, 1997a,b) but many of the inter-disciplinary journals of interest to those re-searching in the corporate environmentalmanagement/sustainability fields are notlisted.

Table 1 details a range of internationaland national journal titles that authors in thegreen business and sustainability field maychoose to submit their work to. They havebeen categorized as

 corporate environmental management andstrategy,

environmental policy, sustainability, social responsibility or

ethics, aspects of the environment, specialized en-

vironmental management topics and corporate management with an environ-

mental/sustainability theme.

In addition to the international and nationalpublications there are a range of trade andprofessional publications that are valuablesources of material as well as outlets for

work undertaken. However potential authorsneed to note that these publications tendto adopt a journalistic style rather than aformal academic one. Many of these types ofpublication are associated with professionaland trade bodies and too numerous to men-tion. However of particular note are the fol-lowing.

Environmental Business Magazine(www.ifi.co.uk). Published by Informationfor Industry twelve times a year. This pub-lication incorporates Environment Todayand Integrated Environmental Managementand is indexed in Aqualine Abstracts.Urlich’s (2000) states that it has a paidcirculation of 8520. The stated aims are tocover environmental management andtechnology for managers and professionalswho buy environmental goods andservices.

ENDS Report (www.ends.co.uk). Publishedmonthly by the Environmental Data Ser-vices since 1978. Its stated aims are tocombine advanced warning of legislativeand policy development in the UK and EU,with in-depth case studies of how compa-nies or business sectors are responding toenvironmental pressures. A legal section, putting key judgements in layman’s terms,is also included. It has a paid circulation of25000 (Urlich’s, 2000).

The opportunities for scholars in the envi-ronment and business arena to publish appearto be increasing, as there is a growing accep-tance of the role of this discipline within busi-ness schools. However it will be interesting tosee how the RAE assessors view the interdis-ciplinary corporate environmental manage-ment journals, particularly whether thosejournals that are at the forefront of publishingdevelopments in corporate environmentalmanagement, policy and sustainable develop-ment are accepted in the same way that thosein other specialized sub-areas of traditionalbusiness and management research, such assmall business research or entrepreneurship, appear to be.
