Congratulations Blackalls Park. Our entries at the Toronto Art and

Craft Fair looked fantastic. The organisers have let us know that some

of our students have been awarded prizes/certificates and these will be

presented at school. At this stage I’m not sure when that will be.

This week we have welcomed five students from the University of

Newcastle to our staff. They will be working with our teachers and

students for the next 4 weeks. Mr Brooker is working with K/1N, Ms

Stanton with 1/2A, Ms Wenn with 3/4M, Ms Cain with 4/5K and Ms

Clack with 6WB. Welcome to all of you – we hope your time at Blackalls

Park is fun, rewarding and a wonderful learning time.

It seems like every week I’m talking about road safety for students

and parents, and mostly I’m reporting negative behaviour. However,

last week I witnessed one of our ex-students modelling perfect road

safety behaviour. Well done Dayna H. Dayna went out of her way to

cross the road legally (and safely) in the crossing and then took the

same path when she was escorting her younger siblings back to the

car. The path she took wasn’t the most direct route from the car to the

school gate but it was safe, legal and set a wonderful example for the

younger children

Over the last couple of weekends we have had intruders on the

school site. Some of them have been on the roof and have caused

damage to the roof. Today we have a couple of roof leaks that are

probably caused by broken tiles. If you live near the school or are

driving past and see people on the grounds who shouldn’t be here

please ring Toronto Police and report the incident. Paying to repair

damage by vandals seems like a waste of precious school resources.

I have included (further in the newsletter) advice we have received this

week from the Department’s Legal Branch relating to privacy. Please

understand that we can’t talk to you about another child; likewise, you

wouldn’t want us to talk to another parent about your child. At times,

this can be very frustrating for parents, but the laws are there to protect

everyone. Please be understanding when you are speaking to staff.

Mathemagicians corner You can do maths……………………………………..

‘Go Fish!’ has been a very popular game. As we mentioned a few weeks earlier here are some

more ideas to make it more interesting.

Try collecting sets of four cards instead of just pairs. This will mean when a

player asks another player if they have a certain card they might have to hand

over all of the cards they have of that number. For example, if Player One asks

Player Two for a three (bearing in mind they must already have that number),

Player Two must give Player One all of the threes that they have. The game

continues until players have matching sets of four that they can put down.

Another way to mix it up may be to ask for specific cards. Rather than asking for

a card in the same rank, ask for a specific card. For example, if you have a Jack of

Hearts, ask another player for a Jack of Diamonds, rather than just asking for a

Jack. This variation makes the game more difficult, particularly if they have to ask

for each card to get their set one by one, and it tends to last longer this way.

Alternatively instead of trying to get matching pairs you could try getting ‘Friends of ten’ – this is

when two numbers add up to equal ten e.g. 9 and 1, 8 and 2, 7 and 3, 6 and 4, 5 and 5. First you

will need to remove the picture cards (King, Queen, Jack, Joker) and the tens. The objective is to

collect pairs (or sets) of cards that when added together equal 10. The ace is counted as a one.

For example: 9 and Ace would be ten – that’s one pair. To infinity and beyond!

THE IMPACT OF PRIVACY LAW ON THE INFORMATION PARENTS CAN BE PROVIDED ABOUT OTHER PARENT’S

CHILDREN

Our school holds information about our students. Some of this information is highly sensitive.

The way this information is collected, used, disclosed and secured by our school is subject to NSW legislation including

the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998, Health Records and Information Protection Act 2002 and

the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998.

These laws limit the circumstances in which your child’s information can be disclosed to other parents. They also limit

the circumstances in which you can be provided with information about action the school has taken in relation to

other people’s children.

This means, for example, you may not be provided with complete details of the action the school has taken in relation

to a student who has engaged in unacceptable behaviour that has impacted on your child.

You should not assume that no action has been taken because you cannot be provided with information about what

the school has done to deal with an issue relating to your child’s interaction with another student.

Our school takes inappropriate behaviour from students very seriously and responds to that behaviour consistent with

the school’s student discipline and welfare procedures.
