Doctors discuss diabetes care

A STAFF REPORTER

A large number of doctors came together to discuss the latest in diabetes care at a workshop — Diabetes Update 2014, Calcutta — on Sunday.

The workshop was organised by the Calcutta Diabetes and Endocrinology Forum, Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata and New Delhi based think-tank PHFI.

Doctors at the workshop also discussed how best to spread awareness about the disease among the economically backward classes, where the disease is spreading fast.

According to Tirthankar Chaudhury, the president of the forum, diabetes affects Indians at an earlier age as compared with the people in western countries. The early onset is affecting the people’s “productive age”, which is why it is even more important to prevent complications resulting from the disease.

Doctors were also urged to undergo courses by PHFI so that they could follow well prepared guidelines for diabetes management. Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata said that they were committed to screening of diabetes, especially women in pregnancy, who are at a higher risk.

To that effect there were stalls providing guidance on every aspect associated with diabetes like a heart kiosk, exercise kiosk etc.
