Snapshot of Young People in Victoria
• In 2010, there are 955,437 young Victorians aged
12-25, comprising 17% of the total population.
• 24% of young people aged 12-25 live in regional
Victoria.
• 7,921 young Victorians identified as Indigenous,
which represents more than a quarter of all
Indigenous Victorians (Census 2006).
• 15.1% of Victorians aged 12-25 were born
overseas (Census 2006).
• In 2009, there were 1,188 humanitarian entrants to
Victoria aged 12-25.
• Overall, young Victorians continue to do well.
The Youth Affairs portfolio in Government
Exists to:
• Listen to and understand young people and convey their needs across Government
• Lead and co-ordinate policy across Government• Provide opportunities for young people to participate in and
contribute to their communities
