Summer is a busy time for our chapter, with lots of opportunities to get to know your fellow members and give

back to our community. I have provided information on some of our upcoming events below. I look forward to

seeing you there!

PWX 2018: Kansas City Convention Center – August 26-29

We are less than one month away from PWX, and I hope you are ready and have signed up to volunteer for the

event. This year’s workshops cover a wide variety of educational topics and tours, including KC Scout, ADS

manufacturing plant, Rock Island Trail, Kansas City Zoo, BNSF Railway Intermodal Facility, KC Streetcar System

and Singleton Yard Facility, as well as a special visit to the National World War I Museum and Memorial. As you can see, we have a

very busy conference and can use all the help we can get.

I can’t say enough great things about are local host committee. Under the leadership of Bill Stogsdill, Tim Ross and Joe Johnson,

this committee has run very smoothly. We have the best volunteers in the nation and that is one of the main reasons APWA National

selected us to host this great event. As noted in the first Pub News of the year, PWX is one of the top seven convention events in

Kansas City in 2018, right behind big events like the Big 12 college basketball and VFW national convention. The economic impact

of PWX is over $5 million dollars for the Kansas City area. Let’s show off our pride in our chapter and our hometown!

National Equipment Roadeo: Kansas City Convention Center – August 28

The National Equipment Roadeo will take place in Hall E of the Kansas City Convention Center. Competitors will show off their skills

with the backhoe/ Mini-Excavator, Skidsteer, and Mechanic competition.

It should be a very exciting competition, and we’ll top it off with the Chapter Dinner at Topgolf. We expect a lot of members to attend

this event, so please register early. Topgolf games can be played by all ages and skill levels, and the microchipped golf balls score

themselves. Come and have a great time at this chapter event!

There are lots of opportunities to volunteer at PWX, including a special event that combines a golf tournament, brewery tour, and 5K

Fun Run. Please visit this website to volunteer: http://signup.com/go/PWX2018KC

Continue on page 3

Can you believe we are less than one month away from hosting PWX? In addition to all of the great training opportunities at PWX, Kansas City will have several special events that could interest you. Here are a few:

Get Acquainted Party in the “Living Room” Sunday at Power and Light 2nd Annual National Equipment Roadeo on Tuesday Young Professionals Reception Monday at No Other Pub Chapter Dinner at Top Golf on Tuesday Golf on Saturday morning at Tiffany Greens Walking Brewery Tour on Saturday evening in the Crossroads PWX 5K Tuesday morning

Registration for golf, the brew tour, the 5k and the chapter dinner is open so go and sign up if you haven’t already www.pwx.apwa.net .

Communications and Publicity Committee Needs!

Speaking of committee needs. Do you love reading the PubNews and the Facebook page? Is this something you would be interested in managing?

Our Communications and Publicity Chair, Caitlin Gard, has accepted another opportunity outside of Public Works, and will

be passing the baton for PubNews editing and Facebook management. Is this something you’re interested in?

Contact Caitlin Gard at [email protected] asap!

Workshop Wednesday is a PWX tradition that involves tours of local venues and this year we have chosen great locations for the attendees. They include:

KC Scout Advanced Drainage Systems Plant Tour Tour of the Rock Island Line Trail KC Zoo BNSF’s Intermodal Facility KC Streetcar World War I Museum

If any of these tours interest you please register at www.pwx.apwa.net . There is an additional charge (unless you have a full registration) for the tours and space is limited so register soon. PWX is our professions main event of the year, this is our chance to show the Public Works world what Kansas City has to offer, let’s make it an event to remember.

DCS - The DCS credentialing program will end August 2018. All those previously credentialed through DCS will continue to be

recognized. No new applicants have been accepted into the program since August 2016.

The new Certified Public Works Professional (CPWP), the replacement for DCS, is set to launch at PWX in Kansas City and has entered the examination development phase. Item writing training was held by webinar on April 16, April 18 and April 24. Exam questions are being written by PW personnel throughout May and June. Anyone interested in participating, please contact Phyllis Muder at [email protected] . An e-mail has been sent to the entire APWA membership about the new certifications launching at PWX in Kansas City. DSC individuals who had asked to transition to the new program have been notified and will get further instructions in June. The new certification program is on schedule to launch August 2018. Emerging Leaders Academy - Applications for 2018-2019 ELA are currently available via the ELA webpage (www.apwa.net/emergingleaders) with an August 17, 2018 submission deadline. information, contact Deanne Cross at [email protected] .

If you have any questions about PWX please contact Joe Johnson ( [email protected] ), Tim Ross ([email protected] )

Leadership & Management Breakfast—May 23, 2018

On Wednesday, May 23rd the Leadership and Management Committee provided a breakfast presentation with special guest speaker Frank Williams from the City of Columbus, Ohio. Frank discussed the importance of Identity Leadership emphasizing the point to always remember "Who you are" and as you move up in your career, not to forget the people near the bottom of the organization. In total, we had 45 people attend the breakfast which was located at City of Roeland Park Community Center. The Leadership and Management Committee invites everyone to attend the PWX Session - Conversations at the Top on Monday, August 27th 9:45am-11:00am, which will be a moderated discussion with Dena Mezger, Patty Hilderbrand, and Chuck Williams all whom are past Chapter Top Ten Leaders or National Top Ten Leaders. You will learn about the paths they followed to achieve posi-tions of leadership. They will talk about the challenges of public works leadership and provide insights into their decision-making pro-cesses and strategic planning approaches. They will also offer advice on how to grow and develop into better leaders.

APWA YP/ASCE YM Royals Tailgate

The APWA YP group and ASCE YM Group met to tailgate and attend the Royals' game against the Astros on June 15. 71 attended

the game. The tailgate was better than the baseball but we got to see fireworks after the game as well.

The 14th Annual APWA BBQ challenge was held on June 8, 2018 at the Knights of Columbus Park in Shawnee, KS. The contest was hot and steamy for early June, and I’m not just talking about the delicious BBQ! Many thanks to our corporate event sponsors

and to the sixteen BBQ teams that competed in this year’s contest!

As usual, the majority of the BBQ judges were Past Presidents from the KC Metro chapter. The participating teams were judged in the categories of sausage, chicken, ribs, and pork. This year’s Grand Champions for the contest, and the recipients of the traveling BBQ Champions’ trophy, was CFS BBQ Team (CFS Engineers). Blazing Cattles BBQ (Walter P. Moore) narrowly missed repeating

as champion and earned the Reserve Grand Championship trophy. Second Hand Smoke (City of Olathe) came in third place.

Other participating teams included: Gun Smoke 301 (City of Olathe), Grease Monkey (City of Olathe), Seriously Smokin’ (Burns & McDonnell), Beats Workin’ (TranSystems), GBA BBQ Team (George Butler Associates), Dunn Up BBQ (City of Leawood), Rub Me Tender (City of Shawnee), Terra Bull BBQ (Terracon), Swine Dining (Affinis Corporation), We Smoke Pigs (WSP), Smokin’ R Butts

Off BBQ (City of Olathe), Too Sauced to Smoke (ASP Enterprises) and Rib’D Chicken (Olsson Associates).

Corporate sponsors for this year’s event were: Affinis, TranSystems, HDR, HNTB, TREKK Design Group, City of Leawood, GBA, Terracon, Burns & McDonnell, Olsson Associates, HG Consult, Walter P. Moore, Anderson Engineering, Benesch, City of Olathe,

and BHC Rhodes.

KC Metro Chapter APWA—Policy Clarifications

The Executive Board of the KC Metro Chapter of APWA truly appreciates all of its members. Whether that be a college intern, a staff member who just received their PE, a retired engineer, and all of our private corporations. Therefore, the following decisions have been made regarding special “announcements” in the PubNews:

We are always sad to lose a member, so in memoriam, if someone would like to write (or share) an obituary from another member’s passing, we would be happy to share.

We like to celebrate with you during one of the biggest steps you are going to take in your professional career—retirement! We would be happy to share an announcement for you! This only applies to retirements, we will not post for promotions or changes of employment.

Questions? Contact Jason Meyer at [email protected].
