suppos i t ion can no t be proved. Presence o f a Mi -

n a e a n t r a d e r . i n v o l v e d i n t h e i n c e n s e t r a d e a 1 l ,

around the ancient Near E,ast" in the Mediterranean

is no t surpr is ing . Surpr is ing wou ld be presence in

Egypt of someone from ancient Dui l r . Moreover,

we should rather th ink that the infbnnat ion about

reason of i ts omission by Arr ian is qui te c lear: i t has

of Strabo, Arr ian and Thcophrastus, which contra-

dict to each other and do not let regard these three

accounts as ref-err ing to one and the same mission.

discover the place of water supply and ware-house

that the carr ier of Anaxicrates was connected not

expedi t ion of Anaxicrates, even i f we take a later

date for th is expedi t ion. From the other s ide, again:

put forward: members of the expedition, ref-erred to

by Theophrastus in hls Histor ia plantarum reached

local name Salala was rendered as Otd)")'1)'o in the

descr ipt ion of the wor ld map of Ptolemy in the 2nd
