A Message from Your Orchard Middle School Principal:

I hope that the transition back to school has been smooth. As you get into a routine, please remember to make the following regular routines in your home.

• Please review your child’s common assessments when they bring them home. Discuss the strengths and your child’s use of strategies when taking the assessments as well as any misconceptions your child may have had with any questions or concepts.

• Please review your child’s assignment book weekly. Review it for any missing assignments and behavior infractions. Discuss what can be done differently in the week ahead.

• Visit the website of your child’s teacher for assignments and support materials for assessments.

• Have your child pack up the back pack with the necessary materials for the next day and place it in the same spot before your child heads to sleep for the night. The chances that your child forgets anything the next day will decrease.

• In addition, please make it a habit to access information about student grades through our PowerSchool student data students. PowerSchool offers separate student and parent access accounts. Both accounts have access to the exact same content. Information about PowerSchool was distributed at curriculum night and then mailed home for those who couldn’t attend. If you need your account credentials, please contact Debbie Heck at 440-349-7468 for more information.

If your child has an issue with their schedule, please contact me at [email protected] with your question or concern.

Please consider getting your child involved here at Orchard. There are a number of intramurals available at Orchard. Some activities include Art Club, Wellness Club, Environmental Club, Newspaper as well as different sports. The sports intramurals are usually held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. All information is located on the Orchard Middle School Website.

As a matter of student safety, it is very important that parents understand that football games, for fifth and sixth graders, are not drop-off events. All Orchard students attending a SHS game must have an adult in attendance that is responsible for them.

Students are not permitted to congregate and loiter underneath or behind the bleachers during the game. If students are congregating under the stands, the chance for unintended student behaviors increases, such as bullying or other unsafe choices.

Orchard newsletter September 2018

This is why students who are seen just "hanging out" under the bleachers or in other areas during the games will be instructed to return to their seats in the stands. Every student is expected to remain in the stands, to enjoy the game and support the team.

School administrators and staff are present at the games and just like for high school students at the games, the school code of conduct is in effect, will be enforced and violations will result in school-based consequences.

Additionally, the high school has procedures for game entry to enhance student safety and Orchard students, like all students, are not permitted to bring bags, purses, backpacks, etc. into the stadium. They also may not bring beverage containers, such as bottles, cans or cups into the stadium.

We will be talking to students about appropriate game behavior in school. We are asking for your support in reinforcing these expectations and rules through conversations with your children at home.

Thank you for your cooperation as we look to provide guidance for Orchard students when they are attending these large school events.

Finally, many of our students are using the internet and social media daily. Children can be made especially vulnerable by sharing personal information, such as home addresses and phone numbers, private thoughts and feelings, and pictures. In order to keep your children from posting information and images they may end up regretting, remind them who may see the information they reveal while online and that things they post are not private and cannot be completely deleted. Please be active in your student and their use of technology. Review what they post and check their texts regularly.

Sincerely,

Cari Mineard – Your Principal at Orchard Middle School
