Coming to our Area:

The Feingold Program Numerous studies have shown that food dyes, additives and preservatives can lead to learning, behavior or health effects for children who are sensitive. The Feingold diet is a test to determine if certain foods or additives can trigger particular symptoms.

We are thrilled to announce that Feingold representative, Lisa Maniaci is coming to our area to explain this easy to follow diet program that has been around since the 1960’s and has dramatically changed the lives of children who have benefited from it.

The meeting is on May 27th from 7:30–9:00 pm at the Little Silver Markham Place Library. Sponsored by the Two Rivers Friends of Different Learners. All are welcome! Any questions, please contact Carrie Marxen ([email protected]) or Amanda Stevens ([email protected]). !

If you have a child going into either of these grades next year and would be interested in becoming an Ambassador, please contact Suzy Manelski by May 15th (933-9093 or [email protected]) with any questions or to sign up. Ambassadors will be chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis. !

understanding Challenges dayUnderstanding Challenges Day was held on March 26th, as a part of the Third Grade “Great Body Shop” curriculum. This program has been run in Fair Haven Schools in one form or another for over 20 years. It is designed to help our children under-stand the challenges that people with disabilities face and become more empathetic to those in our world with different abilities.

This year more than 30 parent volunteers worked to put together a full day event that included activities that simulate the challenges people with disabilities face every day, presentations by individuals and time for children to reflect on what they learned and ask questions. Thank you to Angie Polizzotto, Barbara Jennings, Uneeda Williams, Stanley Sodden, Greg Teeter and Danielle Mitola who volunteered to work with our children. Thanks also to parents, Marion Carolan, Janet Clapp, Loretta Daluise, Molly Taft and Maura Thorp who chaired a sub-committee. We also appreciated the assistance of the 3rd grade teachers, Mrs. Rapkin, Mrs. Kablaoui, Mrs. Grimmer and Mrs. Turner. It was a great day for our kids! !

Parent Book Group:The Blessing of a Skinned KneePsychologist and educator Wendy Mogel teaches parents how to raise a child to be a good person, not just raise a child to feel good. “The Blessing of a Skinned Knee,” addresses difficult parenting issues through the discussion of nine “blessings” which draw on the timeless wisdom of Jewish teachings.

Join us for our last meeting of the school year on Tuesday, June 2nd, from 1:30–2:30 pm in the conference room at Sickles School. Contact Kate Appezzato at [email protected] for information. !

Over the years, the Fair Haven PTA has been featured in local newspapers, spotlighting our programs and success. Through this avenue our local community has gotten the chance to learn about how hard we work and what we are doing to enhance our children’s education. We’d like to thank Kathryne Singleton for drumming up publicity for our events for the past two years. We have been thrilled to see articles in The Hub, The Asbury Park Press, The Two River Times, The Focus, 40 74 Magazine, NJ Monthly and The Journal. If you have an interest in getting the word out to our community and taking over this exciting role, please contact Amanda Stevens at [email protected]. !

Cultural Enrichment 4th Grade Art AppreciationLynn Scott and Suzan Bierly

Thank you to volunteers who created a fun morning for 4th graders on April 17th. Students learned about Toulouse-Lautrec, Pollock, Wood and Warhol from our presenters: Jackie Wilhelm, Maggie Boyea, Suzan Bierly, Alison Peterson, and Lisa Laughinghouse. Rachel Pavluk led our Game/Snack room where the students “tested” their knowledge of the artists with games. Thank you to: Dana Muralt, Sandy Russo, Beth Drummond, Val Tucker, Michele Tomchak, Allison Albainy, Aileen Tuorta, Annmarie Woods, Liz Cooner, Denise Swanzey, Caroline O’Connell, Nenita Kilper, Karen Reddy, Megan Pelino, Fatima Safarian, Lourdes Lucas, Harper Coles, Dawn Mara, Carol Werner, and Amanda Stevens for their support as well. The students went home with original pieces of art representing each of the artists. We also would like to thank everyone who donated snacks and drinks for this special day! !

In April, the students were amazed and delighted to watch hot air balloons, airplanes, helicopters and rockets sail through the room during the Franklin Institute’s assemblies on flight. The students gained an understanding of the three states of matter demonstrated with juggled balls), the power of gravity, and Bernoulli’s Principle. Based on the cheers and smiles, a good time was had by all. Science can be fun!

On May 4th, Living Voices will present several assem-blies transporting our students to various points in history. The 7th graders will learn more about the Holocaust through the eyes of a friend of Anne Frank (9:00 am); 6th and 8th graders will learn more about women’s suffrage (10:15 am); and the students at Sickles will get a glimpse into immigrants’ experiences (1:15pm). Parents are welcome to attend. !
