Over the last few months we have seen twosecurity divisions of household names beacquired. What does this mean for theindustry and how does it reflect on thestrength of the market?

In October 2014 it was announced that Vanderbilt Industrieshad acquired the business Security Products from Siemensand then at the end of November it was revealed that the

purchase of Samsung Techwin by the Hanwha Group would becompleted in 2015. Whether these came as total, out of the blue, shocks to the industry or not it goes to show that the securityindustry is still seen as an attractive investment for somecompanies while perhaps others are ready to move out of it toconcentrate on other areas if the right offer comes along.

Both of the companies taking over the establishedmanufacturers said that it would be business as usual at each ofthe organisations and this is likely to be the case, at least for thetime being. Customers of both Siemens SP and Samsung Techwinwill likely see no instant change because one of the reasons whyestablished companies are acquired is for their market shareincluding a database of existing clients, therefore there is noreason why immediate changes to operating practices will happen.

It will be interesting to see what changes are made concerningthe branding of the new companies and how these sit withcustomers. In the case of the Vanderbilt purchase, the name‘Siemens’ will not be transferring with the sale so the companywill be known as Vanderbilt International from Day One; althoughthe individual brands of Bewator, Cotag etc will continue to beused. As yet we have not heard about the naming of the newSamsung Techwin business going forward.

Takeovers are always tricky times for the employees ofacquired companies and as both of these cases show, evenhousehold names can get taken over. Staff now find themselvesgoing from what was probably perceived as a safe position at aglobal innovator to being an extension of a company that theyhad never heard of prior to the deal going public. Again bothVanderbilt and Hanwha have stated that no changes are planned. But that is the usual message....

So what does the purchase of two of the largest operators inthe market mean for the industry? Well, as already mentioned, itmeans that this is still an attractive industry sector forbusinesses and with very large companies buying up establishedmanufacturers, both with strong European sales, then it showsthat the UK and its neighbours have customers that Hanwha(South Korea) and Vanderbilt (US) value and want to reach asquickly as possible. Much in the same way we have seen CCTVcompanies buying up access control companies; it is easier tobuy the expertise rather than try and build it up. Given thisthinking, the job security for UK staff should be fairly strong.

The acquisitions also mean that both companies will see someinvestment in terms of marketing and R&D from their newowners, which should be good news for customers and partners.

Nothing is certain in business however so we, and the currentUK staff, await the developments of 2015.

The acquisition position

Domestic burglary statisticsshow trendsMCM Security has designed an infographicwhich looks at the statistics surroundingdomestic burglary across the world. Coveringtopics such as the demographic of the averageburglar and the most commonly stolen itemsthe graphic also covers the rates of crimeacross the continent and breaks each countrydown to give an overall picture of how thetrends vary.

Commenting on the findings Kevin Maguireof MCM Security said: “The rate of domesticburglaries has been decreasing in Europe since2002 and while one burglary a minute stilloccurs in the UK, this is significantly less thanin the United States where four burglaries occurevery minute.”

In 2003 in the UK and Wales, there were402,345 domestic burglaries according toEurostat police recorded crimes. A decade laterin 2012, that figure had decreased to 227,280,in line with the decreases seen in the rest ofEurope.

“MCM Security is based in Ireland whichtells a different story, Said Kevin. “According toEurostat, the police recorded figure fordomestic burglary in Ireland in 2003 was 16,436and while this is significantly less that the UKand Wales, what has been found a decade laterin 2012 is that domesticburglary in Ireland hasactually increased to 27, 837which is at odds with theEuropean decrease overall.”

Lowest price security perils revealedThe Confederation of European Security Services (CoESS) and UNIEuropa have published an updated edition of their “Best ValueManual” with the support of the European Commission. Themanual aims to assist contracting authorities when selecting aprivate security provider. By identifying key do’s and don’ts, thoseusing this manual will be able to combine quality with a favourableprice, rather than just settling for the lowest price bidder.

“Choosing security services based on quality and not justprice may sound obvious but it is not always the case as anincreasing number of security services provided to public andprivate authorities are awarded solely on costs. This underminesall efforts to improve the quality of the services being provided.Choosing quality means reinforcing citizen’s trust in our servicesand our industry at large” said Marc Pissens, President of CoESS.

The manual, drafted by CoESS and UNI Europa, is an update ofthe 1999 version and is available via the QR code above.

Six figure R&D funding award for AMGAMG, the British manufacturer of CCTV transmission solutionsand Megapixel cameras, has announced that it has beenawarded a six figure grant for enhanced Research andDevelopment, as it continues its growth path into new industrysectors. The grant has been awarded by the LEP programme, which aims to lever £12m in private sector investment and create500 jobs and apprenticeships by March 2018. Outside of AMGSystems, businesses that have received grant approval so far, totalling £ 1.9m, are GE Precision Engineering, Ecospeed Marineand Cosworth.

Founder and MD of AMG Systems Alan Hayes said: “I amincredibly proud that we have been given this grant. The grant isincredibly significant for us as a business. AMG has spent thepast few years self-funding a sizeable R&D programme. In 2013,this resulted in us bringing to market a series of Multi-ServiceEthernet Switches affectionately known as the ‘AMGWonderbox’. We sell into strategically import projects whichneed 15 year + support. In order to do this, it is imperative tohave the expertise in house. It is also important for the countryto have this expertise in the UK. We often work with verysensitive security projects – often of Critical National Importance– where the customers understand, and appreciate, that thenetworks products do not contain untoward software whichcould be a threat.”

The joint LEP initiative to support businesses in the HighPerformance Technologies (HPT) sector is formed by NEP(Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership) and SEMLEP (SouthEast Midlands Enterprise Partnership).

NEWS EXTRA

Cloudview has announced that it ispartnering with Facewatch the crimereporting and intelligence sharing platform

used both by police forces and businessesacross the UK. As a result those businesses willbe able to upload footage captured by anyanalogue or IP CCTV system ready for sharingwith other Facewatch subscribers and to provideevidence to associated police online crimereporting systems.

Cloudview enables footage from any CCTVsystem to be stored in the cloud withoutimpacting on local recording and monitoringarrangements. To achieve this a small VisualNetwork Adapter (VNA) attaches to eachcamera, connecting it to the Internet for remotevideo capture and management via theCloudview service. Footage is encrypted andstored on secure Cloudview servers where it canbe viewed from any device with a Web browserand Internet access.

As a result of the new collaboration withFacewatch businesses will be able to uploadcaptured video straight into the Facewatchintelligence sharing and crime reporting system, simply by clicking a button alongside therelevant Cloudview recording.

According to James Wickes, Cloudview CEO,the key advantages of Cloudview are its abilityto work with any CCTV camera setup and makefootage available via the cloud. “Add Cloudviewto a CCTV system and there’s no need to trawlthrough piles of DVDs or, in some cases, evenVHS video tapes for the right recordings” heexplains, “it’s all there in the cloud, immediatelyaccessible from a smartphone or tablet ready toshare with other users via Facewatch.”

Similarly, for unattended locations Cloudviewcan be configured to issue an email or SMS alertin response to motion or other sensors beingtriggered, enabling recipients to view theassociated clips immediately. Now users will beable to upload those clips direct to Facewatch, both for sharing with others and to inform therelevant police authority with the minimum offuss and delay.

Commenting on the new partnership, SimonGordon, Chairman of Facewatch said “Thepartnership with Cloudview will be of greatbenefit both to our users and Police. Facewatchusers will be able to use CCTV images to identifypotential troublemakers and quickly share thatinformation with others, and to the police whowill no longer have to send officers on-site tocollect vital video evidence.”

PSI CAUGHT UP WITH JAMES WICKES TODISCUSS THE PARTNERSHIP:

How did the partnership come about? In 2014 we were awarded the Secured By Designstatus for the Cloudview service. This increasedour profile with police forces across the UK.Cloudview has been positively received and thequestion was asked – would it be possible tointegrate the functionality of Cloudview andFacewatch? This has resulted in a partnershipthat enables a Facewatch user who needs tosend CCTV evidence to the police with a crimereport to be able to automatically add the videofootage to a report from where it can bedistributed to other retailers, police etc. Thisrepresents a huge saving in time for allconcerned and most importantly means thatcrucial evidence can be used quickly.

Obtaining CCTV evidence from recordingequipment and getting it to the police is notalways straightforward, often hampered by alack of staff training, recording formats, firewalls and faulty equipment. To dateFacewatch has made the reporting of crime aneffortless experience now, combined withCloudview integrating critical evidential footageis achieved in the blink of an eye.

Will fitting the Cloudview system toexisting installations be astraightforward procedure? The system is simply a ‘plug and play’ unitabout the size of a pack of playing cards whichconnects into the back of an analogue or IPcamera or into your network automaticallycreating a connection with Cloudview. So if thereis a DVR or NVR onsite all of the data that isrecorded locally is also put into the cloud in aformat that is much easier to work with andaccess. It’s also extremely secure.

Does this mean that Facewatchcustomers can now do away with on-siterecording?To be honest I’m completely ambivalent on thesubject of local recording. There are clients thathave gone straight into using the cloud and notfitting DVRs at all and there are many DVR/NVRusers that want to keep recording at a local levelas well as in the cloud. There is no right orwrong way to do it.

How will the process work; will Cloudviewbe included in the Facewatch signing–onfee? The way it is working at the moment is that weare telling Facewatch users about Cloudview, aservice that gives their CCTV systems real teethand I expect it will lead to us promotingFacewatch along with Cloudview. Facewatch willalso promote Cloudview to their clients as it willmake their lives far easier when it comes toreviewing footage and providing essentialevidence as quickly as possible.

INTERVIEW

14www.psimagazine.co.uk

This month we talk to

Gerry Dunphy of IBM

Global about IFSEC

International and his

plans for the event

going forward

“We had such apositive response at

the end of the show in2014 but the stand out

success has to be thehuge numbers of

visitors”

Gerry Dunphy is the Event Director for theworldwide security and fire portfolio atIBM Global which includes IFSEC

International and FIREX. PSI caught up with hima while before the doors open on the 2015 eventto find out how it is all going and what changesare planned for the second year that the showwill be held in London since its long run inBirmingham.

How are the preparations going for theevent in 2015?Swimmingly! We’re now only five months outfrom the show, the floor plan is 96 per cent soldout and it’s all coming together. We have takenon board all the feedback from visitors andexhibitors to ensure that IFSEC 2015 deliversexactly what they’re looking for right now. IFSECis an evolving event and we’re constantlylooking at how it can continue to exceed theindustry’s expectations. Part of that has beennegotiating preferential rates on travel, accommodation and speaking directly with thevenue to ensure costs of food onsite are suitablefor all budgets.

Do you have any plans at this stage tochange anything from the last event?

We’ve conducted a significant amount ofresearch with both our exhibitors and visitorsto get their thoughts on what they like aboutthe show and what they want to see more of.Identifying genuine innovation on the showfloor has been a theme that really stands outand so we’re launching the Innovation Arena. This is an opportunity for visitors to seeproducts and technologies that haven’t beenseen elsewhere, whether that may be from oneof the larger manufacturers or an independentsolution provider. We know that IFSECInternational is the place to come and keep upto date with the latest developments within theindustry so we want to make that as easy aspossible for the visitors.

We’re also going to be introducing theGadget Zone into the Security & Fire InstallerLive feature that was a huge success in 2014.Again, research has told us that visitors wantto get hands on with the products before theybuy and this will provide the perfectopportunity to try out the biggest and latestrange of products in one place.

Another big change is that FIREXInternational will be located alongside IFSECInternational in 2015. We’ve identified the

increased number of installers looking todiversify into fire and with these two eventsbeing more closely aligned, it will make it eveneasier to give them the information they needto do so. It is also an opportunity to speak toexperts that will be available to give advice onhow to install products without damaging theintegrity of fire protected materials.

What was your opinion as to thesuccess of the show in 2014? We had such a positive response at the end ofthe show in 2014 but the stand out success hasto be the huge numbers of visitors. We sawmore visitors, with bigger budgets and had anoverwhelming level of support for the newvenue at ExCeL in London. Overall visitorbudgets have increased by 8.6 per cent, demonstrating the growth that the securityindustry is currently experiencing. Stand outtrends from visitor interest included anincrease in demand to see the latest innovationin: integrated security, intruder alarms, physical security and perimeter protection, which is how we’re shaping the 2015 show. Weobviously had some learnings aroundnavigation but those improvements have beenmade through additional signing and ourinteractive app that will be available fordownload soon.

There was a concern that north-basedinstallers might not travel to ExCeL, didthe numbers reflect this? While it was only natural that there was areduction in the proportion of northern basedinstallers we saw more than a 45 per centincrease in installers attending from otherregions of the UK. Investing our efforts intodeveloping an area specifically for thesevisitors is one of our main focuses.

What work/research are you doing tomake sure that the show remainsrelevant to installers and also appealsto end-users?Speaking directly with the audience, we’vereceived honest feedback about what theywant and that’s products. That’s why we’reenhancing the Security & Fire Installer Livefeature of the show to include more hands-on,demo areas. It’s important that we conduct thisresearch year on year as the industry developsat a rapid pace, so we need to ensure thatwe’re leading the trends and it’s reflected atthe show.

Over the years the eventhas seen fewer physicalsecurity exhibitors (suchas manned guarding) andmore from the electronicsecurity and softwaresectors. Do you think thatthe physical securitysuppliers will return to theshow? It’s not that the physicalsecurity exhibitors arenecessarily moving away fromthe show; in fact in 2014Securitas was on the showfloor for the first time. This initself is a demonstration thatthere is a demand for mannedguarding at the show and thepresence of Securitas last yearsolidifies that. However, it’s notjust manned guarding thatmakes up physical security, wehave a number of physicalsecurity exhibitors whomanufacture fences andbollards. It’s not necessarily acase of fewer physical securityexhibitors taking part, a lot ofmanufacturers are diversifying to incorporateintelligent solutions through voice activatedalarms, deterrent lighting and behaviouranalytics.

On a personal note, 2015 will be the firstshow with you as Director for the IFSECGlobal portfolio. How are you enjoyingthe pressure!!?It’s an exciting challenge, I’ve worked alongsideIFSEC for a number of years as event director ofFIREX and so it’s a natural progression to takethe reins of IFSEC. 2015 will be the first full yearof being at the helm and we have a lot toshowcase on the show floor. The camera’s unobtrusive appearance willblend in with most environments and will becompatible with most analogue systems.

However to gain the maximum image benefit itwill need to be used with one of the 960Hstandard digital video recorders. It gave a good clean image out of the box with itsdefault settings in both natural and fluorescentlighting.

FeaturesThe camera is based around the SonyIMX238 1/3” CMOS sensorwhich has a 1305(H) x1049(V) effective pixelcount. The 2MP IRcorrected varifocallens has a range of2.8 to 12mm givinga horizontal field ofview from 81.2° to22.6°.

Sensitivity isgood but in manycases the camera willuse its inbuilt IR LEDs forlow light observation.

A 3-axis internal cameramount allows the unit to beceiling or side wall mounted.

A conventional BNC videoconnection lead and power leadterminated in a clearly identifiedterminal block are both around 85cm long.Cables are fed through the base of the camerabut a removable side plate allows for a side entryconduit connection.

The clear dome is removed by way of 4 x Torxscrews and is connected to the base by a smallplastic strap allowing it to hang down for set-upwhen installed.

A small printed circuit mounted “Tact” switchis used to turn on the on-screen menu and actsas a joystick to navigate through the menustructure options. There are ten main menuoptions with some leading to further sub-menus.The 20-page manual provided with the cameragave limited details for some of the menu optionsand noted that some were “not applicable” or“do not use” so this may lead to confusion andinadequate settings for some installations.

Menu OptionsThe main menu options are as follows:

1. Focus adj: an aid that provides three verticalbars that indicate when focus is maximised. While these are quite helpful if working with asmall test monitor, the focus and zoomadjustments themselves are very coarse andyou need small fingers or careful screwdriveradjustment to move and lock them precisely. There is no mention of any method to adjustthe focus for low light operation so the use ofneutral density filters or a late commissioningvisit will still be required. There was a slight

de-focussing when the bowl was refittedbut this is probably to be

expected with such asmall diameter bowl.

2. Lens: either ALC(default) or ELC.3. Exposure: thishas a sub menu toadjust brightness,shutter, Sens-Up

and AGC. The Sens-Up has a range from

zero to 50 in 6 stepswith x2 being the

default.4. Backlight: this is set to

WDR by default and this hasadjustable weighting settings

from Low, Middle (default) orHigh. The alternative settings of

HLC or BLC can be chosen with aselectable window zone. It should be

noted that some of the advanced featurescannot be used while WDR is enabled.

5. Day & Night: this was set at extern by defaultwhich appeared to mean that the cameraswitch-over would be controlled by the lightsensor on the LED array as there are noexternal inputs available. This mode did tendto operate at too high a light level and incertain scenes could result in the LEDsflashing as they were at the changeoverthreshold resulting in a flickeringmonochrome image. The second option of IRLED OFF or ON didn’t initially turn off the LEDsbut after a power cycle did, so this may besomething to watch out for. Other sub optionsincluded AGC Threshold, AGC Margin andDelay. Two additional options for Anti-Sat andExtern S/W were controllable but referred toas “Not applicable”.

6. White Balance: Auto (default), Auto Ext, Presetand Manual with Low, Middle and High(default) temperature settings and R and B

gain controls.7. Image: this options sub-menu includes

Sharpness, Gamma, Pedestal, Colour Gain,Mirror and Flip modes (these last two toreverse or invert the image).

8. DNR: this noise reduction mode is set toMiddle as default but can be turned Off, Lowor High to suit recording and displayrequirements.

9. Special: this includes D-Zoom (allowing theimage to be zoomed in up to eight times in 0.1increments), ACE (not explained), Defog (toincrease image detail if weather is poor),Shading (noted as “Do not use”), Privacy (thisfeature has up to 16 privacy boxes that can bechanged in size and position and givendifferent colour and contrast) and finallyIntelligent that has options to set Motionsensing, Alarm (not available as no inputs oncamera) and Quick Zoom. These latter modesallow the camera to track movement withinthe scene and to zoom in for a defined periodon an area of movement. With limitedinformation available, these features aredifficult to use and gave unreliable results.

10. System: the available options are COM (againnot available), View Angle (Wide 4:3 (default),Wide 16:9 and Normal), CVBS (Pal or NTSC),Language, Cam Title and Reset. The number of options is unnecessarily wide

particularly for a fixed camera that has noexternal inputs or method of remote control. Thismeans that features such as Defog would have tobe permanently enabled and may impact on

other features of performance. Menu options thathave no function or should not be used shouldnot be available to the user and should havebeen omitted from the devices menus.

The camera is claimed to have a resolution of1000TVL colour and monochrome but as this isbased on a sensor with just 1305 horizontalpixels and using PAL encoding with a compositevideo output, there will be plenty for engineers todiscuss at length regarding Lines v TVL and limitsof resolution.

The reality is that the camera can resolvesignificant detail but much of this will be lost inany system using RG59 type coaxial cables.Perhaps the advantage of having a high pixelcount in an analogue camera is the capability todigitally zoom into an alarmed area however thiscan only be an advantage with real time detectionand a significant time would need to be spent onconfiguring this camera for suitable results.

ConclusionThis camera appears to be trying to providefeatures that are now the norm for IP basedmodels that can be readily remotely configured. It will be dependent on the installer getting theconfiguration right first time and therefore will beunlikely to be fully optimised in the majority ofcases.

Carbon Monoxide sensor added to rangePyronix has announced the launch of a new accessory for theEnforcer range of products, the CO-WE carbon monoxide (CO)sensor. The CO-WE uses an electrochemical sensing unit tomeasure the amount of carbon monoxide present in the area.

Carbon Monoxide is a deadly gas which is colourless, odourless and tasteless. The only way of protecting againstpossible CO toxicity is to install a carbon monoxide sensor. It willintegrate directly with the panels, being programmed to the‘Gas’ zone so there will be an audible alarm should thedetector sense the presence of CO whether or not thesystem is armed.

Recorders provideextra protectionTeleEye has announced thelaunch of the TeleEye GX680 Series of 4-, 9- and16- channel digital video recorders, which aredesigned for recording and securing video datacaptured from TeleEye network cameras and otherONVIF Profile S cameras.

The GX680 Series has incorporated the TeleEyeHD SMAC- M multi stream video coder with fourindependent video streams allowing simultaneousHD video recording at a maximum resolution of1080p. This is made possible by compressing theHD video to a smaller size of up to 50% lesscompared to a H.264 video coder, leading to fastertransmission via different network environments, smoother video streaming, occupying less storageresources, and allowing longer recording timesimultaneously.

The GX680 Series is not only able to enhancethe security level of all TeleEye IP cameras butalso for other IP cameras in compliance withONVIF Profile S standards. The GX recorder hasthe ability to completely separate the videonetwork from an IP network. Meanwhile, itprovides extra protection for the video data duringinternet transmission, so that hackers are not ableto decode the data streams.www.teleeye.com

HD video quad display systemlaunchedOvation Systems has announced the availability ofFourSight-DVI, an HD video quad displaymonitoring system. Designed for fixed andportable installations, it enables up to four PAL orNTSC cameras to be viewed on a single highresolution LCD display and is reported to beavailable at around 50% of the cost of traditionalmultiview systems.

FourSight-DVI has four BNC input connectorswhich allow standard definition legacy cameras tobe connected to HD monitors without any loss ofquality. This is achieved by processing thestandard definition feeds together into a singlehigh-resolution DVI (or HDMI) output andmapping pixels on a one-for-one basis to an HDscreen with real-time updates for each channel.

In the default mode, FourSight-DVI shows allfour video inputs as a quad allowing all the

cameras to be simultaneously monitored. Ifrequired, users can switch to afull screen view for each camera.A further four modes can bequickly selected to displaydifferent combinations of thecamera feeds on the outputscreen. It also automaticallyconfigures itself for operationwith most high-resolutionmonitors and supportsresolutions from 1024 x 768pixels to 1920 x 1080. www.ovation.co.uk

IP cameras utilise DSP technologyIt has been announced that Grundig’s new IP camera range uses Sony Xarinadigital signal processing (DSP) technology, with 1.3MP and 2MP Sony ExmorCMOS sensor options. Xarina DSP is an IP camera platform, combining imagesignal processing (ISP) and video stream encoding.

Xarina makes the cameras extremely sensitive in low light and 3D NoiseReduction lowers the noise caused by chroma gain control, improving signal-to-noise ratio and lowlight sensitivity. The cameras will also run at up to 60FPS, increasing sensitivity again and reducingmotion blur. As light levels drop, the camera will remains in its colour mode for longer, withimproved visibility, before IR illumination is activated.

The Quad Scan WDR, enabled by the Sony Exmor CMOS sensor, is responsible for image qualityin high-contrast, heavily back lit scenes. The Xarina IP camera rangeproduces quad, Progressive Scanvideo streams in H.264 andMJPEG formats. Full HD, 1080pstreams can be used forrecording and lowerresolution 720p, D1 or CIFvideo streams (whichtransmit more efficiently anduse less bandwidth) can beused for PCs, tablets andsmartphones, which do notdisplay in Full HD.www.grundig-security.com

I’m Matthew Phelps, Managing Director of Eaton’s Security business. Working Smarter is a series of columns where I examine the key issues affecting professional security installers.

Time is money

As every installer knows, time is money or value. Working smarter means using products and services that help use time more effectively. Given that profit is the difference between what you charge for something and the total cost of supply, it surprises me just how many people base their purchasing criteria solely on a single element, say the trade counter price, instead of the overall cost.

By way of an example, if one piece of equipment is priced 20 per cent lower than another but takes longer to install or is more complex to programme the true cost is in fact much higher than it first appears. Installation time is where profit margins are improved. Shorter project times lead to greater profit opportunity and mean that an installer can move on to the next job faster.

Some installers explain that a longer project time drives chargeable hours which lead to improved profits. There are undoubtedly cases where this is true. However an alternative is to charge for the job rather than the time.

Let’s say that Installer A can deliver a project in a single day compared to Installer B needing two. Ultimately the value and therefore the two prices can be similar – it’s just that Installer A uses half the time and therefore earns more profit.

With all this talk of Installer profit we should remember that the end customer and their value objectives are the priority. For commercial projects a faster, cleaner, less disruptive installation delivers higher value than one that takes longer. Equally, residential customers see things in a similar vein, albeit domestically focused. Say, for example, a person has 25 days’ holiday a year. How many would choose to spend any of that precious annual leave waiting in while their security system is installed? So for them it is far more valuable to see the job completed quicker. In truth we all put a value, whether at work or home, on less disruption and more convenience.

Product and system selection is too important to be based on initial price alone and far more robust selection criteria should be employed. This could mean using a radio based system, especially where installing a wired alternative could adversely affect the fabric of a building. Similarly, using products that can be easily replaced using an existing wiring infrastructure could save a great deal of time.

In my last Working Smarter column I talked about why sustainability should apply to all aspects of how security products are designed, manufactured and used. Sustainability is also about good business practices, and fast and efficient installations create a better relationship with customers and add more value to what installers do. Lowest price is not sustainable – sustainability is about using time wisely.

INTRUDER TRENDS

Time changes everything, somebody cleveronce said and this is certainly true of alltechnology, even the most established of

inventions. The intruder alarm device wasdeveloped long ago with the first electro-magnetic alarm system in the world patented in1853. Until this time is was common for people touse guard dogs or even geese to warn oftrespassers on their property.

Unfortunately for the guard goose salesmanthe idea of an intruder alarm system took off andbegan forming into the sector we know today. Before the end of the 19th Century the centralmonitoring station format was created (by ADT),but it wasn’t until the 1970s that the first motiondetectors were incorporated into the alarmsystem. And with the mass house buildingprogrammes of the 80s and onwards, intruderalarms have been fitted to many new homes as amatter of course. Insurance companies alsochampion the installation of alarms and with thequite recent improvements in wireless capabilitiesand reliability, systems are easier than ever to fit.

So is that it for the evolution of the intruderalarm? Well we know from the growth inintegrating security disciplines that there arealways developments on the go, but apart fromthat, the sector is seeing a definite trend due tothe changing social landscape. The next step forintruder alarms looks to be made up of twodistinct areas: simplicity and connectivity.

Changing marketsThere are a number of established ‘professional’systems in the UK such as Enforcer (Pyronix),Premier Elite (Texecom), Domonial (Honeywell),Scantronic (Cooper), Agility 3 (Risco) and manyothers. These systems have seen variousupgrades over the years and enjoy a growingrange of peripherals and accessories such assmoke detectors, shock detectors and petimmune PIRs. They have defined residential andcommercial markets and will continue tocompete for market share.

The recent ‘Burglar & Intruder Alarm Systems’market report from Plimsoll indicates that 48.3%of the 576 companies installing alarms areshowing ‘Strong’ performance so there is still a

customer base out there for systems that needservicing and is providing work. However, it isclear that the alarm manufacturers feel that thereis a new generation of customer that needs a newtype of intruder alarm system – and we are nowseeing those technologies hit the market.

The first distinct area of development in themarket is simplicity. For the systems mentionedearlier there are many different panels andperipherals to choose from which can be a bit ofheadache for both the installer and the customer. To help deal with this situation the manufacturersare now seeing the benefit of providing theirestablished systems in kit format. This isabsolutely ideal for the wireless side of things asit deals directly with the ‘off the shelf’ DIYofferings of the High Street.

For example Texecom’s Ricochet mesh-networking system for point-to-point wirelesssecurity systems is proven in large-scaleindustrial complexes. With mesh-networking therange of the system is not limited with multipledevices capable of relaying messages to and fromeven the most remote locations in a building.

However it is no longer just the larger sites orbusinesses that can benefit from Ricochet asTexecom’s Premier Elite Series has beenexpanded and enhanced with the recent releaseof new control panel models and peripheraldevices, thus bringing commercial-grade securityinto a wider range of applications.

Entry level systems have often been toneddown versions of their more ‘professional’ relationhowever with the announcement of five newwireless kits featuring a selection of controlsystems and peripherals it is simpler to find the

The intruder evolutionThe intruder alarm market is

probably the oldest established

electronic security sector there is in

the UK. So how has it changed over

the last few years?

The basic premise of

the intruder alarm

system has not

changed since 1853;

the property owner

wants to detect and

know if there is an

incident

kit to suit the needs of the application. Obviously, for the installer there are many

benefits of fitting a wireless system including thetime it takes to fit and the flexibility of being ableto place detectors in areas that might prove trickyin a wired installation, but the fact that the PremierElite technology is more than capable of handlingany situation that can arise in a residentialapplication, makes the system a more robustchoice than one from an online retailer or store.

In the interest of fairness we should point outthat similar offerings are available from othervendors too with the Agility 3 Kit, Enforcer Kit,Visonic kit etc…But the Texecom kit launch doesindicate that ‘commercial’ grade alarm systemshave a role in the residential market for thosecustomer that want a proven security panel andperipherals they can trust compared to somethingthat looks similar but doesn’t always deliver.

Furthermore by recommending one of thesekits the installer can fit a unit that will perhapswarrant a maintenance contract and also offers theadded bonus of continual upgrades as the panelswill allow the addition of further detectors andsounders as the need arises. As well as being ableto buy a kit containing compatible componentswithout searching through a product catalogue.

Next generationToday’s 20-35 year-olds expect connectivitywherever they are. The tale of a criminal underarrest asking whether his holding cell had WiFi isabsolutely indicative of the modern technologyexpectations. The next generation of people

setting up home also wantstylish little products thatgive them a choice of howthey can be alerted to anincident and how it is dealtwith.

There are a number ofproducts coming onto themarket that deal with thisrequirement, but here wewill briefly mention two ofthem to outline thetechnology capabilities.

Already mentionedelsewhere in this edition isLe Sucre from Honeywell; awhite box that looks nothinglike an alarm panel. The unitprovides a wireless range of

more than 1000 metres open space and integratesa GPRS module for alarm transmissions andnotifications. Essentially this means that thecustomer can choose whether to receive an email, hear a siren or watch a video in the event of anincident. It also allows the remote arming ordisarming of the units and connects via Cloudtechnology so that the home owner can connectvia a range of devices.

Along similar lines is the PowerMaster-33 G2from Visonic which utilises Frequency HoppingSpread Spectrum (FHSS) technology and a two-way wireless network for streamlinedcommunication. With a transmission range of2000m (6500ft) line of sight, it covers significantlylarger premises than traditional systems, withoutrepeaters. The panel can be installed out of sight, which as we discussed, is appealing to customerslooking for a discreet solution for their securityrequirements. The panel accommodates more than120 wireless devices including up to 64 zones, upto ten KP-250 PG2 keypads plus 32 keyfobs, eightsirens and four repeaters. It also has optionalGSM/GPRS/IP modules.

Both of these systems address the needs of theyounger home owning generation, but cruciallyget them onto the intruder alarm ‘ladder’ withproducts that meet their expectations ofconnectivity and choice. Whether they then decideto move onto a more expansive model as theirneeds develop is perhaps a chance to upsell them.

The future The basic premise of the intruder alarm systemhas not changed since 1853; the property ownerwants to detect and know if there is an incident.Whether this is a break-in, fire etc there is acompatible peripheral available for all of themajor manufacturers’ panels.

The wired vs wireless reliability debate hasnow concluded to put us in a situation todaywhere the next steps for the sector are dealingwith how simple it is to specify the equipment (viakits) and how the incidents are reported andmanaged. Customers want options.

Talking to installers at a recent event one ofthe developments they envisaged for the intruderalarm market is a change in the method ofconnectivity in the future. In addition to GPRS, itwas thought that 4G and even television receiverssuch as a Sky Box were all potentials carriers foralarm signals. One thing is for sure, the ‘alwaysconnected’ generation will expect to be able toconnect to their alarm system wherever they are, which will only serve to bring the intruder panelinto the realm of home automation and a furtherfunction of the smartphone/tablet.

Time changes everything….

MEET THE INSTALLER

This month we talk to John

D’Aprano of DS Systems about

working in the security industry

Do you use a distributor or buy directfrom manufacturers? We use both depending on the project. A lot ofour specialist equipment comes frommanufacturers that we have established a closerelationship with. For instance the ability tomake truly integrated systems often relies uponSoftware Development Kits (SDK) and ActiveProtocol Interface (API) which we work closelywith the manufacturers to create and this oftenrequires a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) tobe signed for the efficacy of the continuedsecurity.

Is 3rd party accreditation beneficial toyou?Yes, DS Systems has a variety of accreditationsranging from Safecontractor to SSAIB approvalto ISO: 9001 certification. This ensures that weare up to date with current health and safety andare constantly monitoring our processes toensure that they are efficient. SSAIB inparticular, provides the customer withconfidence that we are able to design, installand maintain security systems to recognisedstandards.

What would be a typical project for you? There is no such thing as a typical project for DSSystems, but a realistic project for us might bean access control system with CCTV and remotemonitoring, maybe also with a pair of automated

gates; but in reality, no two systems are everexactly the same. There are many factors thatplay a part in how the system needs to operatewith the site and how the customer requires theequipment to integrate into their securityprocedures. It is the responsibility of ourTechnical Surveyor and Installation team toensure that the customer’s requirements are metin full and if there are any snags (or challenges

along the way) we work with the customer to devise a quick andefficient solution.

Do you think there is a skills shortage in the industry?Any trouble recruiting installers? We find there is a huge skills gap within our specialised marketwhen looking for truly technical engineers. Many of thecandidates we interview who seem to have relevant experience onpaper, have limited understanding of how the latest technologyworks and sometimes rather basic knowledge of electronics. Inour interview process we ask applicants to take part in a basictechnical test, this has seen many fail without a clue of a basiccircuit. When we employ an engineer at DS Systems, we invest alot of time in them through training and coaching their skills toenable them to become efficient and expert in their role. Many ofour team have been with our company for years and we try hard tobe an employer of choice.

Are there any common requests from customers thatgive you problems? The sales process starts with an understanding of the customer’sneeds. We would then look at the site and work out a scheme, strategy and cost that will solve their problem and fit their budget. There are often unrealistic expectations from customers forsystem performance or cost. But by detailing how the system willoperate and providing a full specification, these issues are oftenovercome. We look upon the system cost as a return of investmentfor the customer over a number of years. This enables us to showhow a cheap system may not be good value over a long period, where as a quality system, regularly maintained will keepperforming for years to come.

What is the security industry’s biggest myth? That a security system from the local DIY store will be as good asa professionally designed and installed system from us. We oftenget phone calls regarding CCTV systems during which peopleexpress their surprise at the cost of an install because they haveseen a kit in a high street retailers for much less.

What would make your job easier? Why would I want to make it easier? I love my job, I get to playwith all the latest gadgets, I get to break things, repair things andpush the boundaries that others are prepared to accept. The teamat DS are the ones that do all the real work.

What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic securityproduct? An implanted device that knows where everybody is. This could beused for crime reduction, health and safety, access control andpolicing. The unit would be self-powered and could be used fornavigation (once habits are formed it could even drive your car). They could be used as payment at coffee shops and would evenadvise the barista of your regular drink which would be ready andpaid for as you arrive. Failing that, an internet of CCTV systems alllinked together or maybe DNA analysis for access control, imaginebeing able to get into your property by simply breathing on thereader which in turn is able to decipher the DNA in your breath…..

Will England ever win the football World Cup again?Football is something I have never been able to get my headaround. A leather ball? Full of air? No batteries? No cables? Nowires? I just don’t get the entertainment value I’m afraid.

If you won £25,000 what would you do with it?I would invest half in shares, something relatively safe but notexciting, and then I would use the other half for a fabulous familyholiday, maybe skiing in the States or any mountainous regionthat has good Wi-Fi!

www.psimagazine.co.uk

Given that security isgenerally seen as agrudge purchase, howimportant are the non-security applications ofthe technology inselling services andtechnology?

This month we asked our expert panelwhether they were finding themselvestalking more about business intelligence via

security systems these days and if so, what theadvantages are for the final customer/end-userthat installers can promote.

Mike Gillespie –Advent IM & SyIIt is really good to see thisrising on the agenda of manybusiness and organisationsnow. It is something we havebeen talking about for quite a

while and trying to encourage FM and Securityprofessionals to take the opportunity to shifttheir perception and be seen as an investmentand not a cost centre. What better way than byadding actionable data back into the business? The interest in ‘Big Data’ means that there arenow multiple ways of leveraging the data thatresults from our security and buildingmanagement systems in ways that will addvalue and save cost. Turning the data intoinsight requires imagination but as action istaken and savings start to be made thenbusinesses will look to expand their datasources and security has changed its profile.

Using PIRs to report by exception is anexample of how a business can use a piece ofsecurity equipment to help save cost; supportingthe planning of peak and trough occupancy andallowing for heating and lighting to be suitablylowered or even turned off in downtimes. A 1degree lowering of heating creates great savingsin terms of heating economy as we know, somultiply this across an estate and you start to seesome major cost reduction.

Retailers use CCTV images not only secureassets but observe how shoppers interact withpromotions and other store elements. The use ofhigh quality imaging from security cameras isnothing new to big retailers like supermarketsand there is no reason to believe that as long asthe use of the images remains compliant with theData Protection Act, that that would be the onlyapplication for it. Seeing how people respond to adisplay or A and B testing of two displayssuddenly becomes much more insight-laden andthe information shareable and actionable.

Security needs to get into the boardroom, mostsecurity professionals will say it can be a struggle. The use of security originated data in cross silo, C-Suite level reporting is a great opportunity toshow how to maximise the ROI from securityspend and win friends across an organisation.

Julie Kenny – PyronixThe importance of the non-security applications oftraditional security systemswill become more and more adeciding factor in the buyingprocess. As devices become

interconnected on the internet of things (IoT), thedemand for systems which ‘solve’ more than oneproblem and present more value to the customerwill grow. In my opinion, the customer is evolving. The value and benefit which was once consideredadditional is now becoming fundamental. As thishappens, the value proposition we present mustevolve too.

Looking at a business setting, the IoT will be abig driver here. Multiple device types thatcommunicate with each other over the samesystem can offer greater business intelligencereporting. However, whilst aspects of security canprovide data for business intelligence, the sizeand scope of business intelligence is vast, informing a wide range of operational andstrategic decisions.

On a domestic front, technologicallyconvergent offerings will become more prevalent. In this sense, ‘domestic intelligence’ will be thedriver for this market, with a network of deviceson the system to offer greater visibility for thehomeowner. This will mean a more informed andimmersive experience for the user, with greatercontrol and flexibility. To an installation companyselling this product, the obvious solution is theability to holistically monitor your home. Thatdoesn’t just mean security sensors or cameras, itmeans your energy usage, your heating, yourfridge, your lighting, your water: all from thesame device.

Peter Ainsworth –Samsung TechwinEuropeThe massive processing powerof the DSP chipsetsincorporated into latestgeneration of high definition

cameras means that there are now some greatopportunities to generate new business byproviding end-users with added value from theirvideo surveillance systems.

It’s a win-win situation for all parties, includingmanufacturers of cameras and recording deviceswho understand the value of working inpartnership with specialist software developmentcompanies and it is certainly an opportunity forsystems integrators and installers of video

surveillance, whether they operate in the IT arenaor are part of the traditional electronic industry.

Open Platform is a phrase that we are likely tohear increasingly used and it relates to theopportunity to take advantage of the spareprocessing power of a camera’s DSP chipset, todownload and run edge based applications in asimilar way to adding apps to a smartphone.

Having the ability to utilise on boardapplications creates opportunities for multi-tasking, with various departments within abusiness or organisation able to simultaneouslycollect and analyse valuable managementinformation via different specialist video analyticsapplications. It offers operation managers thepotential to improve efficiency in areas such asprocess control, health and safety, marketing andhuman resource management, as well asenhancing the ability of security personnel toreact quickly and effectively to any securitythreat.

Retailers, for example, can use cameras withan Open Platform capability to integrate withother in-store systems, software andtechnologies, such as EAS, EPOS, access control,ANPR, facial recognition, people counting, heatmaps and human resource data, to analysecustomer traffic patterns, manage queues orunderstand the implications of customerbehaviour in relation to signage, store layout andpromotions.

Andrew Brown –SSAIB Business Intelligence is one ofthe newer terms encompassingadded-value functionality forelectronic security systems. Aswe understand it, this provides

security installers and system integrators with, for example, a useful and more meaningful salesproposition whilst also offering their end-usercustomers tangible operational gains to enhancesales, improve revenue and strengthen customerloyalty/retention.

Technological advances, the pervadinginfluence of IT, and the convergence of securityequipment with other building managementsystems, are all factors helping to enableBusiness Intelligence and other added-valuefunctionality become a convincing commercialproposition.

The use of analytics linked with CCTV,movement detectors and access control deviceshas been trailed as a way in which retailers canmonitor customer footfall, spending patterns andreactions to store layout and product placement, for instance.

At two petrol stations on the A19 near

Hartlepool an integrated system involvingforecourt pump dispensing equipment, securitycameras and CRM (customer relationshipmanagement) software has enabled the site toaddress both risk-related issues such as costly‘drive-offs’ (motorists leaving without paying forfuel), along with an ability to implement a rangeof positive management improvements that helpprotect ‘bottom line’ profitability while increasingmerchandise transactions.

Alarm management is another area where thebenefits of system interoperability can berealised. Equipment integration can, for example, ensure that sites improve their security whilstalso reducing their energy usage and minimisingrelated fire risks –all of these gains beingachieved with lower total cost of ownership.

On-site health & safety improvements, raisedstaff morale and consequent reductions ininsurance premiums are further demonstrableupsides from this type of added-value security.Staff ‘buy-in’ to the benefits – achieved whenthey understand that this type of enhancedsystems functionality helps protect them andmake their job easier – is further icing on thecake.

All of these examples don’t even touch on theadditional upsides of energy savings achievablethrough ‘green’ security, which offer furthermeasurable and attractive operational costreductions. But ultimately, all of these BusinessIntelligence and other added-value benefitsrepresent a compelling case for customerspending on security systems that, importantly, pay for themselves – both in terms of initialinstallation, longer-term running costs, and thepositive operational and site managementcontributions they can provide.

Brian Song – IDISEuropeToday video surveillance is notjust used for securitymonitoring purposes and isincreasingly becoming aneffective business intelligence

tool. In particular, it’s the integration capabilitiesof IP and networked surveillance that make thispossible and can result in the reduced operatingexpenditure for many businesses. This providesan opportunity for manufacturers to work withtheir integration partners to develop businesscases that demonstrate value beyond security, and in doing so change the perception of securityas a grudge purchase.

We are doing just this when it comes tointegration with Point of Sale (PoS) systems. Byoverlaying transaction data on top of live andrecorded footage, we’re providing retailers with a

clear picture of what is happening at point ofsale. As items are scanned, they are displayedover the video allowing operators to instantlyverify that a transaction was passed with thecorrect merchandise, or if the barcode of anotherproduct was scanned. This allows retailers toreduce loss and fraud that very often occurs atthe check-out. Reducing shrinkage by even asmall percentage can mean that many retailerscan realise a rapid return on investment fromupgrading their surveillance to networked HD,which is a win-win for the manufacturer and theirintegration partner, as well as the end usercustomer.

In addition, many larger retailers are nowusing surveillance analytics for queue countingand marketing purposes. While queue countingis fairly simple analytics and support customersatisfaction, marketing departments are cuttingcosts by taking staff off the road and insteadusing video to instruct in-house staff on windowdressing and promotional displays, where aspreviously this was carried out by specialiststravelling from store to store.

Another such example, is the increasingdemand for Automatic Number Plate Recognition(ANPR). While there is an obvious use for trafficinformation gathering and in preventing anddetecting crime, other businesses are seeing thisas a way to drive operational efficiencies. In thehealthcare sector, hospitals are looking towardintegrated security solutions to provide patientswith the ability to book treatments online andsimultaneously reserve and pay for car parking. This takes the onus off staff managing andmonitoring car parks, while providingconvenience for the patient.

In another sector, as more and more studentsdrive, universities face the burden of parkingmanagement often across aging states neverdesigned for thousands vehicles. So the highereducation sectors is another industry sector thancan benefit from upgraded surveillance togetherwith ANPR. On the whole, where there’s anopportunity for surveillance integrated with non-security applications to automate previouslymanually intensive processes, there’s usually asimple and transparent business case to bemade.

Daniel Wan –HoneywellSecurity systems have longbeen seen as a necessaryexpenditure in order to protecta business’s property andassets. However, modern

systems are now able to offer so much more thanthe standard benefits promoted on the box. Some

modern systems can even be used to generaterevenue and can prove an invaluable businesstool. Honeywell Security has been advocating thenon-security applications of security systems forsome time, and we have a number of customerswho are starting to record the benefits in anumber of different settings.

Video analytics systems, for example, canprovide invaluable customer data when appliedto retail services. Loitering alerts, which aretraditionally used by security systems to identifypotential shoplifters, can also identify items thatshould be placed in a more prominent position inthe store. Video analytics can also be installed totrack certain movements. While reaching out foran item without purchasing may indicate criminalactivity it may also spot customers who are inneed of customer assistance and provide an alertto the manager who can then deploy staff. Oursecurity systems can also track footfall in and outof the shop, helping retailers make informedmarketing decisions, or manage queues andother staffing issues.

For other sectors, such as banking, securitysystems are a necessary purchase rather than agrudge but still provide immense businessbenefit. The new European regulations such asBasel II, Basel III, and Sarbanes Oxley are aconstant source of stress for securityprofessionals, as they require constant audits ofthe bank’s compliance and security measures.Security systems which can also delivercompliance reports swiftly, at the push of abutton, are therefore vital for businesses in thissector and are rightly in high demand.

John Coleman - CSL Some unsung advantagesexperienced by end-users canbe more subtle. One suchexample is the convergence ofSmartphone apps which manyInstallers see as going some

way to reduce the grudge purchase mentality ofalarm systems from their customers. Some of the‘softer’ benefits that go with apps are often thefirst thing that are asked for when quoting for ajob. If a domestic user had an app which couldverify that their property is safe to enter when thealarm panel is un-set, confirm this with CCTVfootage and also protect a vehicle overnight whenit is set that would be a real value-add.

One of the most common high value domesticcrimes is to break in and steal car keys from theentrance lobby of the house, where they are oftenleft. An alarm system may take on a preventativerole in this scenario and also encourage thehomeowner to utilise their security system whenit is needed most.

Video analyticssystems can provideinvaluable customerdata when applied toretail services.Loitering alerts canalso identify items thatshould be placed in amore prominentposition in the store

REMOTE ACCESS

If you were ever unsure as to the saturation ofsmartphones in the UK consider that PC Advisorrecently ran a review of the most popular

smartphones in the UK (won by the LG G3 by theway) and there were 47 of them! That’s probablyabout 40 more models than most people couldname, so it’s no surprise given the sheer numbersinvolved, plus the fact that people carry themeverywhere, that the security industry should bealigned with their use.

The need for constant connectivity andseemingly addictive need to look at the phoneevery few minutes is driving just about everymarket including books, music, gaming, shopping, socialising, fitness etc onto portable devices. In arecent survey it was revealed that using asmartphone to make voice calls came in at numbersix in the list of common uses. The multifunctionality of the modern phone is already killingoff sales of innovations from our lifetime includingcalculators, hand held games consoles and digitalcameras.

Add the popularity of tablet devices to that ofsmartphones and you have a potentially essentialmethod of working with security technology. Theobvious ones are arming and disarming of intruderalarms and video verification via cameras. Thedevelopment of IP systems lends itself to thegrowth in portable access to security data andfollowing the ‘Internet of Everything’ comes the‘Integration of Everything’.

Most manufacturers have realised the potentialfor opportunity with hand held devices and manyhave launched Apps allowing access to theinstalled systems for status updates and remotemaintenance. All of which fall nicely into therequirements of the modern customer.

In the early days of some of the Apps the cynicsamongst us considered that remote videoverification via smartphone was a bit of a noveltyand a technology looking for a home. However, oneinstaller told me recently that an increasingnumber of his customers are now asking if remoteaccess via tablet is possible prior tocommissioning. Us oldies are not necessarily thetarget market here!

The road to remote access has not been withoutits bumps though. The security of some systems

has been called into question and a number oftimes this year the national media has featuredscare stories about security. In November it hit theheadlines that a Russian website was offering theability to view images from network cameras suchas webcams, baby monitors and some CCTVcameras. While this potential vulnerability in IPsystems nothing new to many of us it highlightsthe disturbing lack of installers not changingdefault access codes.

Speaking at the time of the media frenzysurrounding camera hacking the Chair of theBritish Security Industry Association (BSIA),Pauline Norstrom, said: “We find that about half ofthe companies and organisations we talk to, largeand small, don’t have adequate precautions.Sometimes it is a lack of awareness or simply asloppy approach towards the security of theirnetworks. Yet the results of being hacked can becatastrophic.

“Installers need to guide their clients as manycompanies do not consider the issues andimplications. The technology is there to preventhacking. It is not overly complex to ensurenetworks are protected. Yet, the issue remains andwe have not seen it diminish over the years.”

Essentially the problem is occurring due to thefact that whoever is installing the cameras is notchanging the passwords and ID names of unitswhen putting them onto a network. In the sameway that the telephone hacking was carried out bysome media outlets using default codes, theRussian website gives the default details of someof the widely available cameras (such as ID: Admin,PIN: 0000) to give access to unsecured systems. Itis vital that installers change these codes and, if

possible, use a secured, dedicated network.Add to all of this the distress caused by people

hacking into celebrity iCloud accounts and thesubsequent negative publicity that came with itand there is a definite note of caution needed foranyone installing and using remote systems.

Steve Riley of Risco explained to us at the timeof the iCloud hacking event that if a system isn’tbought from a reputable manufacturer then it’spossible that remote alarm management via asmartphone or tablet could pose a threat tosecurity:

“I can’t speak for other alarm manufacturers butour panels are connected and can be remotelycontrolled through the Risco Cloud platform whichis encrypted using AES128 encryption. Panels canonly be operated remotely by a defined web user, their password and an access code from thephysical alarm system. The chances that anautonomous hacker could gain control over a panelthrough a secure cloud enterprise system such asthis is extremely low.

“We do come across installers that are reluctantto embrace remote alarm management and to apoint it is understandable. Cloud is relatively newterm that is used everywhere at the moment andwith any new technology like this there are alwayssecurity concerns at the outset. The recent episodewith iCloud accounts being hacked does not helpwith the general opinion about cloud systemsbeing easy to compromise. Just like any othertechnology people need to be savvy about whatthey are doing and make sure thatthey have all of the suitablesecurity measures in place.

“Unfortunately now, because a handful ofcelebrities couldn’tchoose properpasswords, thepublic feeling isthat iCloud (andother cloud basedsystems) have aproblem, whenthey don’t. It mightbe fair to say that weare now at the stage withthe Cloud as we were with IP security adecade ago, when people were concernedabout systems that were not ‘closed’ beingaccessed by unauthorised persons. If the Cloud isinstalled and used properly there are virtually nosecurity risks,” he said.

So safeguards are required to ensure mobiledevices are reliable and minimize false alarmswhen operated. Clarification in this area couldcome from amendments to PD6662 and/or BS8243.

But security issues aside the market for remotemonitoring via hand held devices is here andgrowing rapidly. A large number of launches atIFSEC 2013 and 2014 were around the remoteaccess of security equipment and now that thehome automation market is establishing itself withthe likes of British Gas and others offeringmethods for remote control of heating etc, theinclusion of security into the mix is an obvious one.

For the installer there are benefits to offeringremote access including recurring revenue and alsothe opportunity to carry out remote maintenance tosystems. This could severely cut down on yourmileage - driving to and from sites. Utilising theCloud for these purposes is a good idea but thespectre of security is always there, and not just thepossibility of people losing their smartphone asClym Brown of Texecom told us recently:

“Cloud-based services in particular are relativelyeasy to offer if security and data protection is notthe core concern. However for professional securityservices, integrity is an imperative and high qualityprofessional providers should invest heavily inensuring the highest levels of data protection. Some current offerings are more secure than others, and I suspect that the industry can do more toguarantee the integrity of services on offer.”

CCTV is increasingly being linked to the Cloudfor off-site storage and this is giving customers theopportunity to view footage as and when they like

without the need to be on site. However, in the same way that

people used to be concernedabout the security ofrunning surveillance data

across IP, accessing andcontrolling alarms

and cameras viaa hand held

device needsto doneproperly if itis going to be

beneficial.The actual

benefits for thecustomer are clear,

and as we have heard, are desired so this is a market on

the up. The appeal of instant notificationvia email or SMS added to the ability to verify anyalarm via video footage has a benefit to all partiesin the security process – as long as the process issecure.

The new cameras enable the concurrentdetection of number plates from a greatervariety of models, capturing number plates

from different countries (or states) on thesame system. In addition users canalso benefit from access to newvehicle behaviour and characteristicanalytics, and the ability to deploy

up to four high-resolution ANPRcameras on a vehicle, for near-360°

capture. The Sharp and SharpX can analyse a scanned

vehicle to identify its make and the number platestate or country of origin. The direction and speedof vehicles can also be detected with a singleANPR camera, allowing controllers to collect andreview trends over time and automatically detectsuspicious behaviours.

"We believe that the value of ANPR extendsbeyond number plate analysis, and our latestgeneration of AutoVu Sharp and SharpX camerasis a gateway that offers those extended featuresfor identifying vehicle trends and patterns,” saidStephan Kaiser, AutoVu General Manager,Genetec. “Whether in a city setting or on a privateproperty, the analytics in the Sharp and SharpXintroduce important new methodologies fordetecting complex automotive behaviours, alongwith new data mining possibilities," added Kaiser.

The SharpX is also now available in a newportable mobile kit, containing up to fourcameras, a pre-wired processing unit and allnecessary cables, allowing users to move theirANPR equipment rapidly from one vehicle toanother as required.PSI CAUGHT UP WITH STEPHEN KAISER TO FINDOUT MORE:How do the cameras/analyticsvary from previous versions? The latest generation SharpX ANPR unit providesgreater processing power, giving us the flexibilityto support up to four VGA ANPR cameras or twoXGA ANPR cameras on a processing unit with asingle processing module, decreasing the overallTCO. This additional power also provides us withlong-term flexibility so that we can continue toadd new analytics, improve country specificcontexts and make other enhancements. Are the new analytics functionscreated as a result of user feed-back/research?Customer feedback is an integral part of ourapproach to product development. To extend

ANPR’s value we have looked at customer needsrelated to traffic management, vehicle accesscontrol and other scenarios involving vehicles.Single-speed camera estimation, for example, was developed to address multiple customerneeds, from traffic management to securityawareness. Including this analytic within ourANPR cameras provides additional value tocustomers, who might have only been looking atANPR for list-matching purposes. Customerspreviously had to deploy dedicated equipment togather data on vehicles’ speed and direction. Withour new ANPR cameras, they can gather thisinformation alongside license plate reads, without deploying additional equipment.Do you see any differences in theuse of analytics across the globe? Some countries, such as the United Kingdom, have been leveraging ANPR for law enforcementpurposes for a long time, and are now pushing foradvanced and creative uses of ANPR – fromdynamic congestion charging to trafficmanagement. That said, we also see a lot ofinterest for advanced analytics and data miningfeatures from emerging markets, who are tryingto balance accelerated motor pool growth withsustainable city planning. What are the non-law enforcementuses of the cameras? (ie apartfrom police applications)ANPR is increasingly part of a city’s fabric. Beyondassisting law enforcement to detect wanted orstolen vehicles, ANPR has the potential toenhance traffic management such as optimisingvehicle flow. ANPR is also helping private entitiesto automate vehicle access control. One of themain market segments we address is the ParkingEnforcement space. We are seeing more andmore demand for ANPR in parking to increaseefficiencies and provide a better customerexperience, combining ANPR with analytics forParking is proving valuable to a lot of ourcustomers.

Other markets where ANPR can be of valueinclude gaming establishments, hotels andentertainment venues where ANPR can notifystaff of the arrival of guests and VIPs, whiledirecting guests to reserved parking. Retailestablishments also use ANPR to track returningpatrons, identify where customers originate from, and record delivery vehicles’ arrival and departuretimes. And, with our unified platform combiningvideo surveillance and ANPR within a singleinterface, all these applications can be enhancedwith live and recorded video footage.www.genetec.com

Developed in response to home ownerneeds, Le Sucre from Honeywell is awireless panel with wireless TAG reader and

wireless sensors, which operate at 868 MHzEuropean frequency. It provides a range of morethan 1000 metres open space and integrates aGPRS module for alarm transmissions andnotifications.

According to the manufacturer, Le Sucregreatly increases the speed and quality ofinstallations with all of the peripherals in therange linked by radio, so no cables are needed toconnect to the alarm panel, resulting in time-saving and no disturbance to the decor of theinstallation site. This means that each peripheralcan be located in such a way as to ensuretransmission, which not only saves time but alsoensures system reliability.

Le Sucre is designed to unobtrusivelyintegrate into today’s stylish interiors and canbe placed anywhere in the home. The systemcan be installed in a discreet location making itdifficult for any intruder to find. Le Sucre’s easeof use is reported to avoid any operating errors. For example, the TCC800M keyfob gives the userdirect control of the system’s status (set / unset),avoiding the need to return to the alarm panel tocheck the status before going out. Le Sucreincludes a wireless visual verification featurewhich allows to see what is happening if analarm is activated. The home owner candistinguish immediately whether an intrusionhas occurred or if it is a false alarm.

Total Connect 2.0E and Honeywell CloudServices allow the user to view the images on asmartphone or PC as well as to arm or disarm the

system remotely. Smoke or carbon monoxidegas can trigger an audible alarm and thebuilt-in siren of the devices or the optionalindoor siren informs the house occupants

OPINION

Afew years ago PSIM (Physical SecurityInformation Management) became a popularbuzzword in both the physical and logical

security sectors. In its broadest sense, the termsought to describe the increasing unificationbetween IT security and physical securitysystems, which became inevitable with theincreased adoption of IP services throughoutbusiness and society as a whole.

In the case of physical security, thisphenomenon has revolutionised the approach theindustry takes to its products and services.Manufacturers, specifiers and installers have hadto adapt and evolve to meet the expectations ofthe market (and in many cases, the wider public). However, the security sector as a whole hasmoved on and the expectation of an IP connectionis now simply a basic necessity rather than adefining characteristic. Full integration betweenoften complex and crucial systems is now the goalof security operators and providers alike.Paradoxically, whilst the technology isundoubtedly becoming more and more complex, the overall goal is to provide operators andinstallers with solutions that are actually simplerto use and install.

Bringing together all the elements PSIM has been highly successful in bringingtogether physical and logical security systems, but the expectations on integration have grownsignificantly as well. The security market nowdemands more joined-up physical securitytechnology. Common integration componentsinclude access control, cctv, intruder, buildingsystems, firesystems, business systems etc.

Whilst physical and logical security weretraditionally isolated from one another, equallymany of the individual physical security andmanagement applications were too. The inabilityof these various facets to work directly togetherwas a frustration when it was clear that theoverall management of a facility could beenhanced and made considerably simpler andmore efficient by doing so.

Bringing together the various elements hasbeen made achievable by two improvements – • The ability of many security and management

systems to be connected to a universalInternet connection,

• The development of systems and softwarewhich are capable of administering andsimplifying the operator’s task of runningmultiple functions from a single portal.True security integration has only really been

made possible with the advent of systems whichare highly compatible with one another (oftenusing shared/agreed standardised protocols) andoffer the ability to network these previousdisparate elements. The second hurdle has beento understand the popular standards and tocreate software systems which are able to bringthe strands together as a whole.

Surveillance and controlWhilst security systems are traditionally used tocombat intruders and protect against attacks orthefts, some organisations actually face asubstantial threat from what is sometimes termed‘insider theft’. Modern integrated securitysystems can be used as an effective deterrentagainst such threats.

Take the example of a busy warehouse. Withitems being moved in and out rapidly, it can beeasy for a worker to remove items (especiallysmall ones) without necessarily being noticed bycolleagues or human security operators. In thisexample CCTV surveillance may not be enough todetect a problem alone, however in combinationwith an integrated stock taking system andmonitoring of access to the facility it is mucheasier to investigate unaccounted losses and tocheck video footage for the missing items.Equally, it can be a powerful tool to defend thehonesty of staff members where there issuspicion or doubt.

Visual verification With a truly integrated combination of security andbusiness/building control systems there are freshopportunities to use these existing investments. Agood example of this is the administration offacilities management resources. Visualverification from CCTV and security softwaresystems can be used to monitor the movement ofauthorised staff as well as intruders.

A practical application for this could be theintelligent use of environmental temperaturecontrol and lighting. An integrated securitysystem can detect the use of designated areaswithin a facility and intelligently manage the useof resources, especially outside normal workinghours, to reduce any wastage in unoccupiedareas. Equally this visual verification technologycould be used to monitor human and vehiculartraffic around a facility to analyse any congestionor to influence planning decisions.

Emergency situations and firesIntegrated systems can also play an importantrole with regards to safety of people on site. Firealarms are far from a new technology, howeverwhen used in combination with all the otherbuildings control systems, the combined solutioncan play a vital role in safety.

In the event of a fire the alarm will probably bethe first system to activate. In a modernintegrated system this can alert the security teamand if required automatically escalate the warningto the emergency services. Proactively it canautomatically restrict access to dangerous partsof the building and consult HR records or check IDrestricted access logs to see who has entered andleft the facility - providing a more accurateaccount for the emergency services and securityteams to assess the situation. CCTV systems canthen be used to assess if people are trappedwithin the facility and even to investigatedangerous areas and the spread of theemergency, without putting lives at risk.

For organisations that run strict timekeeping andshift-based business models security systems canbe used to administer accurate time andattendance recording. Secure access controlrecords when staff enter or leave a facility as wellas enforcing security. It can also measure whenstaff visit different parts of the facility (for examplethe WC or food service areas) to ascertain anaccurate record of the actual working patterns. When also linked to CCTV and logical access of ITsystems, the HR department or security operatorscan see exactly what is happening.

Legacy systems and ROIIntelligently installed integrated physical securitysystems can offer an attractive return oninvestment. Firstly they allow the ‘mix and match’purchase of systems to best suit requirements andbudgets. Secondly, they allow the use of existinglegacy systems and the inclusion of componentsthat are either very specific to their role orfinancially would be problematic to replace.

A good example is the use of CCTV cameras, where the best solution may be a healthy mix ofmodern megapixel cameras are other legacy orspecific environment systems. In the past it wouldhave been harder to use different specifications ofcamera on the same network but integratedsystems are specifically designed to cater for thiseventuality.

Greater flexibilityWhilst PSIM has undoubtedly bridged the gapbetween physical and logical security, thedevelopments that have taken place since have, arguably, been more helpful to security operatorsand installers.

The connection of physical security to IP-basedsystems was a vital development in the securityindustry as a whole, but the synergy betweenphysical systems is bringing the evolution of trulyself-aware solutions even closer.

Traditionally organisations and installers dealtwith a complete solution which was mutuallyexclusive to other solutions and offered little inthe way of upgrades and evolution options.Making any changes required seriouscontemplation and often involved large budgetarycommitments that were often untenable.

The combination of physical security and IPsystems has also radically altered the installermarket. Installation specialists increasingly haveto understand both IT and physical securitydisciplines to offer the best solutions to clients, but the trade-off is that as an industry thesecurity sector is able to grow and offer exactlythe solutions that customers require.

Security customers now have greater controlover their investments and a greater confidencethat it is a wise investment in a wider economiclandscape that is achieving sustained growthagain.

Door entry installationsuccess at Beaufort Park

Comelit Group UK has teamed up with StGeorge PLC, part of the Berkeley Group, todesign and supply a door entry system for

Beaufort Park, a mixed-use development in NorthLondon consisting of residential and commercialbuildings. The site required a system capable ofoperating over long distances while still beingcost-effective to install. This requirement madeComelit’s 2-wire Simplebus technology ideal forthe project.

The development comprises 24 individualblocks, each with its own bespoke stainless steelcolour video digital entrance panel, integratedproximity reader and audio unit with a call buttonfor two-way communication with the centralconcierge. Utilising Cat5e cabling, each dwellingis linked to a central switchboard located in oneof the buildings – with no additional twin cableneeded to power the monitor.

So far, a total of 1,466 apartments have beencompleted with various entry phones fromComelit’s range, including Genius, Planux and

Planux Lux. While some of the distances from theentrance panel to the concierge exceed 800metres, this challenge was overcome using 2-wiretechnology, which enables long-distanceconnectivity across the entire development whendistributed across several building risers. Unlikepolarised cables that have limited functionality, this non-polarised alternative can be used in anydirection.

As with all new housing developmentsnowadays, St George was also required to offeraffordable housing alongside market-pricedhousing in order to achieve more balancedcommunities, income levels and social mix.Comelit was therefore asked to supply a variety ofinternal monitors from its range to suit thediffering specifications of each individualapartment. Comelit’s Genius monitor was used forthe entry-level apartments, with Planux andPlanux Lux for the higher-end units, all of whichwork seamlessly on Simplebus.

Francesca Boeris, Comelit’s UK Sales Director, said, “Due to the simplicity of Simplebus, we wereable to meet and exceed the requirementsstipulated by St George. Specifically, we were ableto supply a system that was robust, flexible andmost importantly, allowed for a cost-effective andeasy installation.”

Studio invests in IP surveillanceSamsung Techwin video surveillance technology ishelping create a safe and secure environment forall who work on a site which first opened to theworld of film in 1913. Situated in South WestLondon, Twickenham Studios offers a bespokeservice to all media, including film and television.

Despite working on films, such as ‘The Others’,‘Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ and ‘The Iron Lady’,the Studios went into administration and in 2012seemed destined for demolition. However, following a successful Save Twickenham Studios’campaign, the site was purchased by Britishbusinessman and property magnate Sunny Vohra, who quickly implemented a multi-million poundplan to modernise and re-equip the Studios.

With the need to ensure that valuableproduction equipment and other assets will not bean easy target to would-be thieves, Carl Childs,Head of Engineering for Twickenham Studios wastasked to source a video surveillance system thatwould allow the monitoring of all activitythroughout the studio. “The cost implications ofhaving to replace equipment can be significant, but equally important was the need to safeguardagainst any disruption to film production and toverify 100% compliance with the Studio’s stricthealth and safety procedures.”

With the assistance of Aray Architects, a tenderprocess resulted in Securebase being awarded thecontract to install a 28 camera IP network basedsystem.

Dariush Hekmat, Director of Securebase said:“We needed to install and commission the systemwithin one week. Our ability to complete theproject on time was enhanced by TwickenhamStudio’s engineering department overseeing the

professional installation of an IP networkinfrastructure before we arrived on site. With theSamsung Techwin featuring POE (Power overEthernet), installation time was further reduced asthis negated the need to install power points ateach camera location.”

27 of the installed cameras, which are equippedwith Samsung Techwin’s Open Platform WiseNetIIIDSP chipsets, are capable of capturing 2MP FullHD (1080P) images when the lighting level is aslow as 0.01 Lux and have a frame rate of 60fpswhich results in latency free clear images. Thirteenof these cameras are SNO-6084R weather resistantbullet cameras, 10 are SNV-6084R vandal resistantdome cameras and 4 are SND-6084R internaldome cameras. All are day/night cameras withmotorised varifocal lens and have built in IR LEDilluminators.

An SNF-7010 360-degree 3 megapixel camerahas also been installed at a specific location at theStudio where a large number of standard cameraswould normally be required to monitor such alarge area without any blind spots.

The images from all 28 cameras aresimultaneously recorded on a Samsung TechwinSRN-1000 network video recorder which has 12terabyte on-board storage capacity, enabling Carland other authorised personnel, to quickly retrieverecorded video evidence of any suspicious activity.

“By investing in a future proof IP network basedvideo surveillance system that can be expanded atany time if our requirements change, we have putin place a highly effective tool which should helpus to protect our assets and maintain a welcoming,as well as safe environment, for many years tocome for everyone who visits or works at theStudios,” said Carl.

NNUH upgrades access controlFaced with a healthcare facility that includedindependent buildings and car parks, the buildingowner identified that the current legacy accesscontrol solution was coming to the end of its lifecycle and was in need of future proofing toprovide monitoring of entrances, exits and othersensitive areas ensuring a safe environment forpatients, visitors and staff.

Site facilities management company SercoGroup along with installation partner Check YourSecurity conducted an Enterprise Audit Report(EAR) of the existing TDSi 379-door access controlsolution. The report provided the stakeholderswith an asset register and conditional appraisal aswell as highlighting system improvements. It alsooffered independent advice on the securityindustry trends and key available migration paths.

Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital(NNUH) elected to install and upgrade to thelatest TDSi integrated access control platform;this included new EXpert 4 IP controllers andEXprox readers, which were combined with thenewly-released EXgarde Management Software4.2 in a virtualised environment.

The integrated system enables NNUH toquickly identify all areas on site, including specificlive events where security can respondappropriately, whether this be a suspiciousperson or hazardous condition, they can reactfaster and more effectively.

Royal Spa Centre upgrades FD&A systemGent by Honeywell has installed S-Quad Visual Alarm Devices (VADs) in LeamingtonSpa’s entertainment venue, the Royal Spa Centre. The theatre and cinema, ownedby Warwick District Council, recently upgraded its entire fire detection and alarm(FD&A) system to an integrated Gent Vigilon Compact solution that incorporatesmore than 50 S-Quad VADs throughout the multi-use building.

Warwick Council had expressed interest in the use of the technology during theinitial meetings with system integrator, Fire Safe Services.

Steven Dowell, Fire Safe Services said: “The existing FD&A system had a threeminute delay utilising beacon only devices. As the Royal Spa Centre is a publicbuilding that is in continuous use, Warwick Council felt it was important to use thelatest visual alarm technology to protect the hundreds of visitors, its employeesand the historic building.

“The solution we installed incorporated Gent’s S-Quad VADs with voice soundersand we programmed the system to keep the three minute delay. During the firstalert, the specific solution was set to trigger key individual beacons throughout thebuilding to act as a staff alert. After the three minute delay, or in the event of asecond device being activated, the system was then programmed to give a fullevacuation signal, so all of the VADs will activate and the sounders would be usedto advise occupants to leave the building.”

Healthyhedonismnow safeand securePEL Services hascompleted theinstallation of firealarm, intruderalarm, CCTV andaccess controlsystems at TheThird Space’s Sohohealth club.

The Third Spacedelivers what is

described as a new form of “healthy hedonism”,adopting an integrated approach by bringingtogether the best experts and facilities to caterfor all requirements in exercise, health, medicine, nutrition, and fun. As part of the building andrefurbishment project at the London venue, PELServices undertook work to design, install andcommission security and fire alarm systems toprotect the considerable investment.

PEL installed an internal CCTV systemthroughout the premises featuring day / night

cameras that automatically change from colourimages to night vision when the light levels dropbelow a certain threshold. In the swimming poolarea the camera has been fitted with a very wideangle lens to ensure complete coverage of thearea with one device. In the new reception, cameras have been integrated with a panicbutton facility for added security andreassurance. The entire CCTV system is recorded24 hours a day.

A networked electronic proximity accesscontrol system has been fitted to a newlyrelocated Medical Centre. The system allows forauthorised staff to come and go freely butprevents others from entering without permission.PEL designed the system to be easily expandable(up to 200 doors), so it can be extended to coverother areas of the Club as and when the remainingphases of the refurbishment are completed. Theintruder alarm system was also upgraded.

The existing fire alarm system at the Club wasa closed protocol system, considered to berestrictive. In line with general industry leaning,PEL replaced the entire system with an openprotocol addressable system that is more flexibleand accommodates a wider choice of equipment, including specialist devices and control panels.

ConnectionsHello again,

Happy New Year and welcome to the January 2015 edition ofConnections.

As we move into another New Year recovering from the spending, eating and drinking frenzy what could serve as a more soberingthought than contemplating the quality of service provision youenjoy from your current monitoring service. Maybe over the Xmasbreak the service levels have made you feel that it’s time to ringthe changes and leverage some additional margins from yourexisting signalling systems?

Well look no further, as we enter into our 32nd year of successfultrading both SMS and NMS are best placed to look after all yoursecurity needs. Through our Manchester and Portsmouth centreswe provide total continuity of service with a virtual telephony andalarm handling platform, providing excellent service levels atcompetitive rates with loads of freebies and incentives thrown inas well. We even pay you £50 commission for every system thatcontracts for response from The Keyholding Company!

Whether you are a seasoned user of remote monitoring or astartup company, our team will make sure that you are assisted atevery level, either with your very first connection, or by projectmanaging your bulk volume connection move.

To help you oversee and work on your monitored systems, wehave had for many years phone Apps to put systems on testsecurely and software to allow you to maintain and report onyour signalling systems. You can run false alarm managementreports from our software or import alarm activity into your ownCRM system and run your reports from there. Then there’s ouronline application process, no forms to type up or faxes to send, just click on the dropdowns enter the customer address andsubmit, it’s as simple as that!

Across our extensive network we have the latest alarm traffic andphone traffic management systems through which operators canbe dynamically deployed depending on where the high levels ofactivity are, this is done by either of the supervisory teams inManchester or Portsmouth.

Are we like your existing ARC/RVRC? - No we’re not! For one thingwe do not accept poor performing CCTV systems that take up adisproportionate amount of operator time, we do not allow suchsystems to adversely affect our service levels – we prefer ourcompetitors monitor them!

We do not believe in a totally automated response service toreduce operator head count only to find there are insufficientresources to answer the phones in a timely manner – unlike someof our competitors!

We believe in working smarter with you and in turn workingsmarter for you, to deliver an unrivalled quality of service byreinvesting our profits and resourcing our business properly. Andyes, we are really good even when there are extreme weatherconditions to contend with, again much better than ourcompetitors.

So give me a call, or visit www.smon.co.uk and submit an enquiryonline, let our two centres take the strain of looking after yourremotely monitored customers, - professionally.

Bye for now

IP speed dome with 30x zoom optionGrundig’s 1080p IP speed dome range has a 30x optical zoom option. The speeddome, GCI-K2795P, has an IK10 vandal-resistance rating, IP66 weatherproof ratingand operating temperature range of -40°C to +50°C. This makes it suitable foroutdoor, rugged applications prone to extremes of weather and temperature.

The GCI-K2795P speed dome features quad video streams. The high-resolution,1920 x 1080p, 2MP stream is ideal for Full HD recording with lower resolution D1 orCIF video streams available for viewing on monitors or smartphones. H.264 andMJPEG compression modes ensure efficient video transmission and data storage, saving network bandwidth. Day/night functionality, with WDR, ensures high-qualityvideo images are produced in the most challenging lighting conditions, such asseverely backlit scenes or at night.

The speed dome offers 400°/sec pan and tilt movement, with a minimum speed of0.5°/sec for accurate dome positioning. The 30x optical zoom, complete with 12xdigital zoom, enables operators to zoom in and followevents from a distance. The domes support ONVIF profile Sintegration, maximising compatibility with most leadingcontrol systems and VMS solutions. grundig-cctv.com

CCTV clips from around the world…

U must be jokingTraffic police havereleased this footage ofthe moment a lorrydriver performed a U-turn on the M6 Toll afterdriving the wrong way up

an exit slip-road. Leonid Papachin was given a 15-weeksuspended prison terms and an 18-month driving ban for hisactions. Apparently he got onto the Toll thenrealised he didn’t have the money to pay for it.www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbrMl_ZVBJ8
