This month PSI took a trip to Vegas to see

what is happening in the US security market

and find out how it differs from the UK

market in terms of trends and technology.

Ihad not been to Las Vegas before and was not sure what to expectfrom the Strip or ISC West, the American security systems event, when we ventured over there in mid-April, however I did find some

similarities between us and the US - although it was mainly smalldifferences.

For example, we all know America tends to do things on agrand scale while the English among us prefer to be a bit morereserved and stand in line; so while we have Blackpool they haveVegas. The tattoos, poverty-gap and seedy side of both are clearbut the size of the US version is much more apparent and thelocals more plush, as was the carpet in the Sands Expo- muchsofter than the rough stuff we get in UK exhibition halls.

That aside there are some important differences worth notingbetween the security markets and the drivers behind them.

It was quite clear that the buzz around the show was aboutbusiness intelligence. Now that we have cameras that give us 7Kvideo (as launched by Avigilon this month) and a host ofmanufacturers bringing out 4K units the quality of CCTV footageis starting to get to the stage that anything less than 720p isconsidered poor. With this raising of the resolution, the databeing collected by cameras provides customers with far moreinformation than the systems of previous times. And the use ofthis data leads to a difference in the markets.

To clarify, video analytics is nothing new. We have had thesoftware/algorithms for some time but it is only now that the rawdata itself is so good that they are taking a bigger hold and thecreative types are constantly coming up with clever things youcan do with the information.

In the UK we see analytics as having two purposes - securityand business intelligence while in the US, chatting to variouspeople at the show, the security side is by far the major thrust ofanalytics use, with tools such as PoS being the next main use.

It appears that the US considers the technology having a muchbigger role to play in homeland security than we do in the UKwhere we’re seeing the dual role of security andbusiness/marketing for analytics these days. Perhaps it isbecause we have lived with home-grown attacks and unrulyneighbours for much longer than the States and are possiblyahead of the surveillance game in that respect. Certainly manypeople felt that the UK market is far more mature and widelyestablished and could be a template for US CCTV in the future.

One thing that the US has that is more mature than in the UK iscasinos and the number of cameras in those establishmentspaints a rosy picture for installers that get contracts in the newbuilds popping up all over the country.

It was an interesting event to attend and showed that we maybe far apart in miles, but we’re not miles apart in everything.

The US and us...

Security now included in newbuild regulationsThe Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) haswelcomed the publication of the new BuildingRegulations which – for the first time inEngland – require new homes to incorporateprovisions to resist unauthorised access. Thenew requirement, and the accompanyingApproved Document Q of the BuildingRegulations covering door and windowsecurity, takes effect in October this year andwill apply to all dwellings in England.

The new requirement covers main entrancedoors, windows and interlinked doors tointegral garages in houses. The requirement alsocovers external entrancedoors to apartment blocksand to individual apartmentdoors that open intocommon areas.

The new ApprovedDocument states that doorsand windows will meet thenew security requirementsif they can resist physicalattack by a casual oropportunist burglar. To dothis they must be bothrobust and be fitted withappropriate hardware.

DHF general manager

and secretary Michael Skelding said: “We’vecampaigned alongside Secured by Design for along time to have security incorporated intothe Building Regulations. So we areparticularly pleased that, at last, builders ofnew homes will have to ensure they provideenhanced levels of security for occupants. TheHousing Standards Review is streamlining theregulatory process to increase the number ofnew homes being built. Achieving increasedsecurity of homes was a key aim within thereview. Properties built after October this yearwill feature levels of security that will providereal defence against break-in attempts.”

The risks of not fit-for-purpose CCTV According to a new report, companies and consumers areputting assets at risk by choosing video surveillance solutionsthat are not fit for purpose. Aiming to simplify the optionsavailable and help companies make better decisions, thereport highlights video surveillance as a service (VSaaS) whichcombines CCTV and cloud computing into one offering.

The report, commissioned by Cloudview, ComparativeReview of VSaaS and Local CCTV Recording and Management, details the history of video surveillance, outlines its manyuses and explains how the technologies have evolved anddifferentiated. The purpose of the report is to demystifybuying decisions for all security managers, from consumers tocorporate compliance officers. Highlighting how indecisionover security upgrades exposes organisations and individualsto an increased likelihood of crime, the report also indicatesthat hasty decisions can result in wasting fortunes onpointless and expensive rip and replace upgrades.

The strengths and weaknesses of CCTV and IP cameras, and their compatibility, are not generally well understood, according to OpenSky, who conducted the study.

“Closed circuit and video surveillance as a service don’tneed to be mutually exclusive,” says report author NigelStanley, Practice Director for cyber security at OpenSky UK.“Few people understand that they could complement eachother and create an omnipotent management system. Anothercommon misconception is that closed circuit analogue andopen digital IP systems are completely incompatible, when inreality, the cloud is a simple and inexpensive way to bring thetwo together and get the best of both worlds.”

Justice offer customers over three decades of experience. Howdoes this give you the edge over your competition? 30 years of experience has given Justice the opportunity to engage withnew technology and build up a loyal workforce. Our large customer baseincludes large corporate organisations, SMEs and residential customerswho all benefit from the same point of contact year on year. Staffretention and stability is the key to providing an excellent customerrelationship and service.

Your established customer base is accustomed to particularproducts, what prompted your decision to start using DualCom? We started using DualCom in the nineties when the only other signallingproduct of its type at the time would not work with what was then thenew ISDN line technology. Over the years DualCom have continued toinnovate and provide a technical and field support service that is secondto none. We prefer to use well-established suppliers that have weatheredtough economic times and still come out on top.

What’s the strategy behind keeping the business regional despiteyour significant organic growth? Clients prefer to use a local company with local knowledge and of coursea quick response. We have stayed away from acquisitions as our organicgrowth has been fuelled by the provision of an excellent installation andservice facility of our own systems. Our local offices have built up apersonal customer relationship from initial survey through to installationand ongoing service.

You are one of only 8 companies to hold a BS8418 accreditationfor CCTV installation. What are the main benefits of this? Surprisingly 90% of monitored CCTV systems do not meet BS8418standards. At the outset these systems appear suitable for the end userbut are often installed to a poor standard without any back-up facilitiesfor the monitoring. The Insurance Industry quickly recognised theproblem of non-BS8418 systems and the National Security Inspectoratelaunched a separate scope for BS8418 accreditation at the Insurers’request. A BS8418 system provides assurances for fail-safe duplicatesignalling systems, quality and backup. It would be monitored by asuitably accredited remote video response centre with trained operatorsand can obtain a Police URN enabling a quick police response.

What do you predict will be the next ‘big thing’ in the industry? The continued roll out of reliable “always on” high speed fibre broadbandwill enable IP alarm signalling, off-site CCTV recording and other cloud-based security systems to be established. Analytical CCTV software willalso progress further with software that can recognise a fire, a numberplate and a face. Over time I think we will see the use of networks of IPcameras, controlled and recorded via the cloud, doing the job of a fireand/or an intruder alarm, as well as an access control system.

NEWS EXTRA

12www.psimagazine.co.uk

The annual competition held during the IFSECevent (16th-18th June at Excel, London) willprovide participants with a global stage to

compete against their peers and represent theircompany in a series of tests.

Competitors including installationapprentices and young engineers will undertakea 90-minute assessment, reviewing a previouslyinstalled intruder alarm system, identifying thefaults, re-commissioning the system andfinishing with any additional security and safetymeasures.

Each entrant is marked by a panel of judgesfrom the security inspectorates, training andcommercial organisations, and points areallocated based on performance in the variousdisciplines.

Engineers of Tomorrow (formerly called theIFSEC Apprentice Challenge) was created bySkills for Security under its previous name ofSITO 17 years ago. The competition is promotedby UBM and is supported by CSL Dualcom, Skillsfor Security, NSI and SSAIB and the results willbe featured in a future edition of PSI magazine.

We spoke with competition organiser MarkCunningham of Skills for Security about the testsand the changes he has seen over the yearssince the event began. Who can enter the competition?Applications are invited from apprentices bothon formal industry approved training schemesand equally to “in house apprentices” and youngengineers.

Applicants must be in full time employment inthe security systems industry and have thewritten consent of their employer to participate

Age Limit - The competition isopen to any security systemsapprentices or young engineerswho will be 24 years of age or underon the day they compete

To give everyone a fair chance, competitors will be allocated to theappropriate category and themarking for the different categorieswill be handicapped/weightedaccordingly.What specific tasks willentrants be asked tocomplete?Competitors will work in pairs andhave 90-minutes to review apreviously installed intruder alarmsystem, identifying the faults, re-commissioning the system andfinishing with any additionalsecurity and safety measures.

Competitors will also complete a short tenquestion multiple choice test on currentstandards for intruder alarms.

Why do you think that peopleshould enter? It gives our young engineers and apprentices thechance to meet and compete against their peersfrom different parts of the country with thechance to win prizes and recognition in theindustry for themselves and their companies.

There are prizes each day for each heat and ifat the end of the week they are in the top threepairs of the competition overall, then they get toattend a prestigious black-tie dinner in Londonat the Security Excellence Awards to receive theirprizes. Again that gives great publicityopportunities for their companies, so there’ssomething in it for the apprentices and theemployers.Have you seen the standard ofentrant improve over the years? The standard has improved over the years. Tosome degree this is a natural progression asthere is a much higher degree of IT literacyamongst the young people entering our industrytoday.

The increase in university fees has also led toapplications from youngsters who previouslywould maybe not have considered anapprenticeship but are now attracted by theopportunity to “earn while they learn”. This hasled to a growing number of young people withhigher grade GCSE’s entering the securityindustry straight from school and this could be abig attraction to employers. How difficult is the judging foryou? It’s easy for me; I have a team of inspectors fromthe NSI and SSAIB so I leave it to them!

Joking aside the standards of entrant arecontinually improving and it can be quite a closerun thing so the expertise and experience of theinspectors is paramount, the inspectors mark thecontestants using a pre agreed score sheet andmarking guide to ensure a level playing field. Inmy role as stand manager I do have the finaladjudication in the event of any difference ofopinion between inspectors but this doesn’thappen often as these guys know the job insideout and I have worked with them and knownthem all for many years and we all share thesame goal of developing the next generation ofengineers for our industry. For more information about the Engineers ofTomorrow competition visit:www.ifsec.co.uk/Content/Engineers-of-Tomorrow

PSI ON TOUR

The International Security Conference &Exposition – also known as ISC West – is thelargest event in the USA for the physical

security industry, covering access control, alarmsand monitoring, biometrics, IP security, videosurveillance, networked security products andmore. Held at the Sands Expo in the VenetianHotel on the Las Vegas Strip the event is onemassive hall full of technology that, over threedays, is the focal point of the US security sector.

PSI took a trip to the show and met up with anumber of experts to talk about the differencesbetween the US and the UK markets and whattrends could be coming our way via the Statesover the next few years.

As expected there was a huge number of newsystems being launched and plenty of opinions tohear over the course of three days. Here is acollection of some of the new systems andopinions of people we met on our travels:

NEWSIDIS launches in the USWith headquarters in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas,IDIS launched its DirectIP video surveillancesolution to the US market at ISC West 2015.Already known and doing rather well in the UK,the plug-and-play, high-definition solution waslaunched to the USA at the show by regionalPresident Andrew Myung and Sales Director KeithDrummond.

“DirectIP is designed to provide a simple yethigh-performance solution,” said Keith. “Theframework builds an entire network system from asingle source supplier, comprising a range of IPcameras, NVRs, monitors, video managementsoftware, as well as switching hubs andaccessories.”

Moonlight steals the limelight Mobotix revealed that its 6MP cameras have anincrease of light sensitivity of more than 100-times than the company’s previous 3MP cameras. The monochrome version reaches a 300-timeshigher sensitivity than the previous series.Instead of one full second of exposure time thenew 6MP systems can select only 1/100 s whichresults in capturing even fast moving objects inlow light conditions.

This increase in light sensitivity was achievedby several means: wider sensor with bigger pixelsto catch more light, a hardware noise reductionfilter directly at the sensor, a new lens with abetter light transmission, and an improved imageprocessing software reducing the noise of lowlight images. This system, called MobotixMoonlight Technology was impressivelydemonstrated at the event.

Coffee from the mountainsFibaro, the manufacturer of wireless homeautomation systems, and the Z-Wave Alliancetook part in the Mount Everest Challenge at theshow when mountain climber Mariusz Malkowskiproved that "Home is Wherever You Are." Duringthe show Mariusz is confronting extremeconditions as he ascended to the top of MountEverest from where, in a live demonstration, hecontrolled Fibaro sensors and other Z-Wavepowered devices located half a world away.

Using the wireless technology, Mariusz turnedon lights, operated locks, opened garage doorsand brewed a coffee to prove the reliability of Z-Wave devices.

The new guardProbably the most photographed system on showover the three days was Knightscope’s K5Autonomous Data Machine, a fully autonomousrobot with an array of on-board sensors used tomonitor geo-fenced areas and provide a physicaland commanding presence in public places wheresecurity is needed. The machines communicatevia a wireless network directly with theKnightscope Security Operations Center (KSOC), abrowser-based user interface, to provide real-timealerts of unusual or suspicious activity.

Featuring a surveillance camera, ANPR, GPSand sensors for the measurement of temperature, humidity, barometrics, CO2 and sound levels therobot caused quite a stir in the New ProductShowcase area.

OPINIONSOn our rounds we met a lot of people and spokewith many about the trends they are seeing in themarket and the growth areas for business. Manyfelt that business intelligence and surveillancecamera analytics would begin to rise toimportance especially as camera resolutions gothigher so more data can be captured. Here is asmall selection of some of the opinions we cameacross.

Aubrey Muhlach – SeagateWhat trends are you seeing in the US at themoment? Firstly we are seeing a move forwards from simplyhaving surveillance as a security solution to usingit for analytics. We did a survey with some of ourpartners recently to ask what it was they wereusing cameras for and there are about 12% ofthem starting to use video analytics. I think this isan upgrade that is starting to happen in the USand I believe it is a similar case in the UK as youhave a good foundation of surveillance systemsand people are asking what they can now do withall of the data they are gathering. One thing I amthrilled to see is that people are valuing the dataand are investing in systems to make sure theirinformation is safe and available when required. Is the UK seeing the same trend in youropinion? It seems to me that the UK is leading the way inthis and along with the US investing heavily inanalytics and both markets understanding thatstorage of information is valuable. Both are awarethat leveraging data makes for better customerexperiences such as traffic patterns are in theright flow, hospitals are faster to admit patientsand you have better experiences checking into ahotel as they know who you are – these are areasthat I think are very similar between the US andthe UK. What will be the trend next year? It’s always higher rates of video resolution! I’mhoping that it will be analytics and that people arethinking about the benefits, particularly as somecan be cautious about investing in surveillance. The rise in the use of wearables and pushing

alarm/videonotifications to

smart deviceswill continue.

Wendi Burke – 3xLogicWhat trends are you seeingin the US at the moment? The two largest trends I haveseen over the last year thatwill continue on into 2016would be mergers andacquisitions between accesscontrol and video surveillancecompanies. Another trendthat is high at the momentinvolves cloud services andmoving towards ‘real’ cloud, not just a server you canaccess through a browser, buthosted services outside of acompany where they aresaving money because theydo not have servers on site. This also saves on electricityand the cost of the servers;you pay for only what you usewhich is more convenientbecause you can add andremove cameras, servers etcwithout having any high cost

– plus these are managed and maintained for youas well. The UK is still quite analogue. What would yousay the US is?I think the US is about 50:50 with IP now as wehave a lot of new infrastructure and buildingsgoing up as the economy has improved. All of thenew projects are bringing IP on board. There are alot of companies offering hybrid solutions so youcan take in analogue and IP to allow you to utiliseany existing cabling infrastructure. How long has analogue got in America?I think it will be around for a long time in pocketshere and there. I don’t think anyone who hasbuildings currently wired for analogue is ready

to switch. We are moving towards IP and fibreand there are lots of new technologies comingon that improve bandwidth and resolution, but Ido think that analogue will stick around for quitea bit longer.

Brian Matthews - Verint SystemsWhat are the main differences you see betweenthe UK and the US security markets?Since the 1970s and 80s, the UK market has had atremendous amount of CCTV cameras installedper capita—much more so than in the U.S. The UKmarket is very mature and involves leading videosecurity manufacturers. Today, the big potential inthe UK is customers who are ready to replacetheir analogue cameras with IP devices.

Meanwhile, in the US, it’s mainly analoguecameras connected to DVRs and to encoders anda hardware matrix. US customers are alsogradually upgrading to IP megapixel cameras togain better image quality and more capabilities.

In the UK market, there is also moregovernment involvement in standards andregulation around video surveillance than there isin the US. For example, as demand grows for videoanalytics in security applications, especially retailoperations, new regulations have beenintroduced. One example is the i-LIDS program, agovernment initiative that provides a benchmarkto facilitate the development and selection ofvideo analytics. When any video security solutionthat includes video analytics is sold in the UK, i-Lids certification is now mandatory in many cases. What will be the next security technology trend? We see several significant trends on the horizon. For example, we’re seeing an acceleratingmigration to the Cloud and a growing expansionbeyond the traditional definition of “physicalsecurity” as protecting a given facility. Today, it’sevolving to be more focused on risk intelligenceand management.

As a result, the traditional securityoperations/command centre (SOC) of globalenterprises, law enforcement agencies, governments and cities has evolved to be moreproactive. Today, there is more of a focus on riskintelligence, business continuity, and mitigatingand preventing incidents before they occur, ratherthan just responding to incidents and managingthe situation after the fact. This shifting focusenables more seamless integration andcollaboration, and improved data-sharing andvisualization between the SOC and employees, first responders and other entities, includingmobile resources, mobile command centres, andetc. In the end, the regional and global SOCs canwork together more seamlessly than has everbeen possible in the past.

Mitchell Kane & Andrew Morgan –Vanderbilt IndustriesWhat are the main differences you see betweenthe US and EU markets? The contrasts between the two markets are in acouple of areas. Firstly look at the number oflanguages we need to deal with in Europe and thevarious approvals we have to have - the barriers toentry in the markets across Europe are muchgreater. In some ways it is easier to be cynicalabout having one European market as everycountry in the EU has a different opinion onapprovals. In some countries some of thoseapprovals are used to prevent competition whilein the US there is a very open market and thebarriers are limited. The only difference when youcross the state line is the accent! When you attenda show like ISC West, just look at all theexhibitors from the Far East – they must see thisas a huge market for them. The drivers aredifferent too, so in the UK if you look at the threemain areas of CCTV, intruder and access control, intrusion has become a saturated market. Every

report you look at shows a slow decline drivenmainly by the consumer world and to survive youneed to offer the complete package of monitoringand technology and while you can go to B&Q andget this for under £150, but getting quality isdifficult. The essential differences between thetwo markets are the costs involved of being inthem. In Europe it is quite expensive but it isrewarded when people see that you do complywith approvals, make quality products andprovide technical support.

Andrew Elvish – GenetecWhat are the main differences between the USand UK markets?I think there are some notable differences in thetwo in terms of where each is with the changefrom analogue to IP. The UK went all-in onanalogue in the mid-90s and are now at a pointwhere they need to make decisions about howthey migrate. I think there is a lot of thinkinggoing on about how this can be achieved and thefact that this is happening brings to mind anotherdifference between the two markets which is thatthe UK is thinking about how to bring together thesecurity side of the business with the operationalside of the business. We are seeing that in someend-user verticals in the US but in the UK there ismuch discussion around how to leverage videosurveillance and access control to gain deeperinsights in stores and cities. At the same time inthe UK we are seeing some very cleverapproaches to leveraging video applicationsbecause of the history of CCTV in the UK there is alot of thinking around making it safer forcommunities. The level of dialogue that is goingon the UK is very inventive and we are now at thepoint where companies are switching over to IPnetworks with robust profiles. Not to say this isn’thappening in the US, it’s just that there is adifferent focus looking more at crime prevention.

UPGRADING CCTV

With the ability to monitor larger areas andview greater detail using higher resolutioncameras, many organisations are turning

their attention to newly available multi-megapixelcameras to secure open spaces.

4k cameras provide up to four times theresolution of 1080p high definition securitycameras, however organisations must first ensurethey have the appropriate infrastructure resourcesto support these new cameras. While companiesdesire the increased coverage available with thesenew devices, they may require additionalbandwidth, processing power and storage tosupport the adoption of the technology.

This has more organisations asking theirinstallers: How can we incorporate higherresolution surveillance cameras, while keepingcosts to a minimum? According to Erick Ceresato ofGenetec there are a few ways in which installerscan help their clients deploy high resolutioncameras more efficiently. Here are Eric’ssuggestions:

Minimise network impact - Although securitydepartments will maximise the benefit of ultra-highresolution cameras by displaying a single camerawithin a monitor, operators often need to viewmultiple cameras on a display, dedicating only asmall area for each stream. By taking advantage ofmulti-streaming capabilities, a video managementsoftware (VMS) can automatically switch betweenhigh and low resolution streams based on the sizeof the video tiles being viewed by an operator. Thiscan greatly reduce bandwidth and workstationrequirements in instances where there is no needto display a full megapixel stream, such as when anoperator is monitoring multiple cameras on amonitor or when certain cameras are displayed insmall tiles.

GPU-accelerated video decoding - With theincreasing availability and use of new ultra-HD andmulti-megapixel cameras, it may also be necessaryto upgrade existing workstations to cope with thedemands of decoding higher resolution video. AVMS that relies solely on central processing units(CPU) will use a significant amount of processingpower to decode only a few cameras, therebyinhibiting the ability of the operator to viewadditional cameras or run concurrent operations.

GPU-accelerated video decoding makes

deploying next-generation cameras in a system farmore practical and affordable. By leveraging aworkstation’s graphics cards and embeddedgraphical processing units (GPU) to decode video, operators can display more cameras, at higherresolutions and frame rates, while also providingthem with greater speed and fluidity when playing-back and reviewing video. With affordable, off-the-shelf video cards, organisations can minimise theirneed to purchase new workstations, as they deployhigher resolution cameras within their system, andkeep CPU available for other operations.

Optimising server utilisation - By implementinga high-performance computing (HPC) environment, customers can optimise the use of their existinginfrastructure resources, helping them reduce theexpense of purchasing new equipment. Theselection of a VMS that can provide a scalablearchitecture can allow organisations to reduce thenumber of recording servers that are needed withintheir system, as well as help minimise the costs ofoperating and maintaining their surveillanceinfrastructure.

Staying on top of surveillance - With thegrowing adoption of higher resolution cameras, organisations must take into account howimplementing these devices will impact theresources of their surveillance system. Selecting aVMS with capabilities that help optimise the use ofbandwidth and hardware can significantly minimisecosts. It also ensures that an organisation’snetwork maintains reliability in order to supportother applications that are critical to their businessoperations.

Moving on up

Of course there are a number of ways to upgradethe resolution of a CCTV system depending on thestarting point. There is no need for example to

think that the only roadto HD from analogue isIP. Whilst it is fair to saythat most of themanufacturers’ R&D isin the networkedsurveillance side ofthings these days thereare various ways to useparts of your analogueinfrastructure to gainhigher resolutions. Themost obvious methodis to upgrade the

camera as this is where theinitial image is captured and if you do

not have a camera capable of giving you a goodresolution image then no matter what technologyyour customer has in the background they will notbe able to look at data that is not there– real life isnot like CSI!

This year we have seen a rapid rise in thenumber of manufacturers launching 4K cameras, which only last year seemed a little excessive in amarket that largely still operates at 720p or 1080p.And, as is the way of technology, the 4K camerashave already been left behind by the launch of 5K,6K and now from Avigilon a 7K camera. The launchof this unit is covered elsewhere in this edition (onpage 26), but it is fair to say that even Avigilonwould not expect anyone to buy their 7K camerasand try to fit them straight into to a system runninga much lower res analogue unit. As we’ve pointedout already the infrastructure must be in place tobe able to support the demands of these superhigh resolution cameras.

In the interest of fairness it should be pointedout that not all of your clients are going to need toupgrade to 4K or 7K, it all depends on theapplication and what information they want to takefrom the scene. A higher resolution camera willgather more data so if business intelligence oranalytics is of importance to them then the higherresolutions offered by 4K will be desirable but notalways vital. And just to be sure the images areuseful, re-check that the lighting and positioningwill suit what may be a wider view from the higherres camera. It is also worth noting that despite theclaims of some manufactures as to the bandwidthrequirements of their units there are usuallysacrifices to be made in order to lower the strain onthe network from a high resolution camera. Insome cases, while the way in which the image isbroken down into tiles to allow lower res images tobe saved for saving on the bandwidth certainlydoes help, the framerate of the cameras is reduced,in some cases to 4fps. If that suits the applicationthen that is fine, but for ANPR analytics forexample, this may not always be practicable.

Improving options As already mentioned, the path to higherresolutions does not have to go through IP territoryor involve ripping out cabling. IP is likely the bestchoice in a new build, but if you have a customerthat is currently running low res analoguetechnology there is no barrier to them increasingtheir resolutions and a number of ways to do thiswithout breaking the bank. Technologies such HD-SDI have shown that camera upgrades can bemade while keeping the Coax cabling in place andnot getting IT managers involved in the installation. Some changes will need to be made such asupgrading the monitors (your customers will needto have monitors of at least 720p) and possibly therecording device (HD-SDI does not work withanalogue DVRs) in order for the full benefits of theupgrade to be experienced. Based aroundbroadcast systems, HD-SDI can be achieved in fullor using hybrid installations and signal repeatersmay be required depending on the cable runs. Fansof HD-SDI point to additional benefits such as nearzero latency and uncompressed images as reasonsto remain on Coax cabling.

There is also the option of usingswitches/adaptors to run IP cameras over Coaxcabling and these can add PoE to the system. Many network camera manufacturers have a rangeof switches to allow their cameras to be used onexisting cabling as (cynics would say) theyrecognise that by only selling units that requiredCat5 to be installed could limit camera sales as theinstallation costs would spiral.

Clearly the best route to higher resolutions isnot as straightforward as just buying the highestresolution cameras. There are a number ofquestions that you need to ask your customersbefore suggesting the system for the job. You needto consider:• Why do they want to upgrade?• What do they want to do with the data?• What is currently installed?• What is the budget?

Choosing the most suitable system will dependon combining the answers to those four questionsto meet their requirements.

Camera resolutions will only improve in thefuture. Consider, now that we have seen the launchof a 7K camera how many R&D departments mustright now be working on 8K, 9K and beyond?Whether we actually need such high resolutions formost applications is up for debate, but what is sureis that anyone who has tried to identify anyone oranything from a grainy image will have wished theyhad a better system installed. The imagelimitations of a 4K camera are much less thanthose of a 1080p unit, but upgrades always costmore money so getting it right is essential.

INSIDE STORY

26

When Avigilonannounced that it

would showcasethe securityindustry’s firstsingle-sensor7K (30megapixel)security camera

at the ISC West2015 tradeshow in

Las Vegas a few daysbefore the show it

unsurprisingly caught the attention of themarket. Promising ‘stunning’ image detail, the7K HD Pro camera was described assimultaneously providing maximum scenecoverage while minimising bandwidth andstorage consumption, redefining the industrystandard for high-resolution imaging. Avigilonalso announced the release of the 6K (24 MP)HD Pro camera at the same time.

When coupled with the Avigilon ControlCenter (ACC) software featuring Avigilon’s HighDefinition Stream Management (HDSM)technology, the 7K camera is listed as providinga resolution exceeding 7,000 pixels and morethan 30 million total pixels and, says thecompany, brings effective processing power andefficient bandwidth and storage management –one of the key concerns regarding the use of 4Kcameras over IP. The frame rate does drop withthe higher definition units as you would expect;the rate for the 7K camera is around 4fps.

Built with large areas in mind, the HD Procamera series are designed for providing fullsituational awareness combined with cleardetail when zoomed in, such as with themonitoring of a full stadium and capturing fandisruptions to comply with mandatorygovernment regulations. Other applicationscould be covering a full parking lot andidentifying number plates or covering the entiretarmac of an airport while still being able todistinguish plane numbers. It is stated that asthe cameras can cover a larger area, fewercameras are needed in the installation.

The 7K (30 MP) and 6K (24 MP) devices joinAvigilon’s family of 4K (8 MP) and 5K (16 MP)HD Pro cameras. The image quality of thecameras is made possible by the H4 platformand H.264 compression with the latest edition

of HDSM 2.0 technology. The cameras are alsosupported by Avigilon’s LightCatchertechnology, for low-light performance.

PSI caught up with Willem Ryan, SeniorProduct Marketing Manager at Avigilon, to findout more about the new cameras and discussthe development of much higher resolutioncameras than the market is familiar with.

We are only beginning to see 4Kcameras hit the market in theUK, so why launch 7K so soon?We have been innovating beyond 4K since 2007when we introduced our 16 megapixel camera.High resolution imaging is important becausesurveillance cameras are most effective whenthey are able to cover wide areas with thesimultaneous ability to zoom in and provideclear image detail. With this objective in mind, innovations that increase the resolution, coverage (field-of-view), quality andperformance of camera technologies arepositive developments for the security industry.

Is the infrastructure commonly inplace for people to use a 7Kcamera?Yes, the Avigilon Control Center software withour High Definition Stream Management(HDSM) technology is a critical component forgetting the maximum benefit from the 7K HDPro cameras. This software allows organisationsto leverage their existing infrastructure withinan Avigilon ecosystem and take advantage ofresolutions as high as 7K without requiring anysignificant increase in network capacity. Weprovide an end-to-end solution, which consistsof purpose-built products that provide clearimage detail with minimal impact to networkstorage and bandwidth.

Are there any installation differences from HD cameras? The 7K HD Pro camera is easy to install and setup, with remote zoom and focus capabilities.Installation would be comparable to a box-styleHD camera.

How long before we see 8K and9K – will higher definitions everstop? High resolution imaging technology isconstantly evolving, both outside and within thesecurity industry. We will continue to create‘game-changing’ products and set newstandards.avigilon.com

Name: Ian Zeff

Job title: Director

Time in security/fire: 23years

Company name: CryptexSecurity (UK) LLP

Location: Barnet

Areas of expertise: Securitysystems, securitymanagement, security training

Accreditations: SSAIB andvarious awards andcertifications

Do you use a distributor or buy direct frommanufacturers? A combination of both. Over the years we havebuilt some amazing relationships withmanufacturers and supply chain distributors. Welike to believe we work in partnership on bothaccounts and stay loyal, giving and gainingbusiness for and from each other, and we’reequally reliant on delivery costs, lead times, credit terms availability and flexibility.

This can only be done with someone, acompany we trust – how the best business hasalways and will always be done!

Is third party accreditation beneficial toyour company? Third party accreditations are immeasurable interms of how beneficial they are – each and everyone can help offer the client independent peace ofmind that we have achieved certain standards–it’s as simple as that. Accreditations like NSI,SSAIB etc. create a strong brand and guidancethroughout the industry.

What would be a typical project for you? Is there such a thing as a typical project – we liketo think that no two are the same. We work in arange of sectors, from residential requirementsfor alarms, through CCTV and today visualverification through to education, health, retailand even places of worship.

As opposed to the typical sector though, aproject would include a premises that requires thefull works - either a new or an upgraded securitysystem, integration, maintenance and monitoring.

This way, we get to build up a partnershipapproach with our clients, and they know they canrely on us 24 / 7 / 365, especially with our new

alarm receiving and control centreservices!

Do you think there is a skillsshortage in the industry? Anytrouble recruiting installers? I think the skill requirements arechanging in our industry as we

work towards more visualverification, home automation andintelligent buildings. The type and

level of workforce must beprepared to change to reflect

this. Never has

there beenmore truth inCharlesDarwin’sinfamousquote thatit is notthestrongestof thespecies

that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is theone that is most adaptable to change. This is ourchallenge as an industry collectively.

Are there any common requests fromcustomers that give you problems? There is never a problem we cannot solve, and ifwe don’t have the solution, we always makerecommendations to ensure the customer’s issuesare responded to quickly and effectively.

By example, we don’t offer keyholder services, and many of our new (and existing!) customersbelieve that it is a natural service for us to offer. However, what we do have a number ofcompanies which we highly recommend and weare able to support keyholder services, so if thereis a situation, we can be called to reset the alarmand ensure a property is safe and secure.

What is the security industry’s biggestmyth? Openly and honestly, the biggest myth is it works. You can have the most highfalutin system in theworld, which may stop an opportunist, it mayreduce the amount of time available in a propertybefore the alarms are sounded, but it wouldn’tnecessarily stop a determined criminal. This iswhy it’s critical to keep innovating in our industryso that new methods of prevention are launched, and until criminal masterminds manipulate them, will offer the latest source of security andultimate peace of mind.

What would make your job easier? Recently, it is increasing pressure from supplierswith their return or replacement procedures. Wehave to work through detailed technicaldepartments and then either send it back in itsoriginal packaging, which would prove anightmare for us to store, or provide a specialhash number.

Whilst this is all very well, if we get a call out at2am in the morning with a technical fault, usuallythe departments aren’t available for us to workthrough the issue and then we would have toleave the customer in an unsafe environment, something we are absolutely not prepared to riskin any circumstances.

What is your ultimate/fantasy electronicsecurity product? As we move to be more reliant generally onwireless solutions, from an efficient, effective andaesthetic perspective, my ultimate securityproduct would be a high definition wireless, professional CCTV camera that is fit for purpose.Although they are in the making, currently theyare no way near the power and effectivenessrequired.

Will England ever win the football WorldCup again? Is this still the fantasy question again? Sadly, notin my lifetime!

If you won £25,000 what do you think youwould you do with it? I would personally take a lot of pride in giving itall to a charity of my choosing.

PTZ CAMERAS

Over recent years the PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom)camera has established itself as the idealsolution for the remote tracking of

individuals and vehicles. For those operating inpublic areas such as high streets and retailenvironments the ability of the PTZ to be able torotate and turn in order to follow the movement ofa person under suspicion makes it more usefulthan a static camera would be. Obviously, thestatic camera also has its role to play in theoperation, it is often the statics that are focusedon a single scene that pick up the initial incidentfor the monitoring centre to then use the PTZ totrack any further movement.

PTZ cameras come in all sorts of shapes andsizes and can be used internally and externally. Foroutdoor use there are vandal-proof domes andruggedized cameras made of stainless steelfeaturing wiper blades to keep the screen clear. HDPTZ domes give the added advantage of digitallyzooming in to the image with much lessdeterioration on the image quality. However thePTZ does come with its own inherent expense; itneeds a human at the end of it – obviously notpermanently viewing images 24/7 but on-hand incase tracking is needed. This had led to somesectors, in the light of budget cuts, not specifying, requesting or commissioning of PTZ units howeverwith the upturn in economic conditions the moreexpensive, but ultimately more results drivenoption could see an upturn of its own. And the R&Dsurrounding the cameras has not stopped either.

“The developments in PTZ and domes havebeen extensive in terms of robustness andresolution. Possibly less so in terms ofresponsiveness,” says Karl Pardoe, MarchNetworks Regional Sales Manager, UK andIreland. “In all cases the advancements in HD andmegapixel technology have benefitted bothconventional PTZs and domes.”

There are considerations for installers when itcomes to PTZ cameras: “Responsiveness doesstill depend on the type of installation used,”

says Karl. “Cabled installations with joystickcontrollers offer great responsiveness. Theadoption of IP networked installations withsoftware driven PTZ and domes (GUI and PCmouse) are subject to reduced responsiveness. The speed of response can be impacted by thenetwork itself and remote access by users. Thatsaid, overall improvements have been made tomany product solutions.”

One in, all outFor some time, PTZ manufacturers and vendorshave stated the notion that one PTZ or 360 domecan replace a number of static cameras and, therefore, save money and installation time. Thisis not entirely true and depends entirely on theapplication and what the user requires of theequipment.

“There is some truth in this statement; asalways there is more to consider here,” says KarlPardoe. “A PTZ can provide the same coverage asmultiple static cameras although in truth this isonly really effective when the PTZ cameras aremanned by operators. If a PTZ is only used on pre-sets and tours, then they will miss much of thevideo evidence provided by multiple staticcameras. A 360 degree dome will replace staticcameras more readily in indoor environments butexternally they still offer limited use and cannotreally replace the full benefits of the zoom featureof PTZs for distance. You can save money oninstallation time and in some cases even on thecost of purchase however; the fact remains thatusually a good security solution should bedesigned to include the features and benefits of arange of statics, PTZs and 360 degree cameras.”

The most ideal surveillance applications arethose therefore that combine the use of all typesof cameras depending on the situation and theanalytics (if any) being utilised. This is commonlywhere the operator will pick up movement in oneof the static cameras, or a 360 running perimeteranalytics might raise an alarm and then the usercan get a clearer picture of the potential threatusing the PTZ or have external alarms to drive thePTZ to a pre-set location that covers the areatriggered by the alarm. This is also ideal becauseif a PTZ camera is used on its own, once theoperator begins to zoom into the image or begintracking, then the area under surveillance isnarrowed and other events might be missed.Hence the ideal option of combining the variouscamera types into an application.

Domes and PTZ cameras have not seen aslowdown in technological developments inrecent years and the capabilities of the camerasare improving alongside those of other cameratypes. Including a PTZ into installations as part ofa contract will require additional infrastructurebut may well bring results for your customer.

REMOTE CONTROL

Perhaps no statistic better illustrates just howdeeply stitched into the fabric of our dailylives mobile has become: according to

Gartner, an analyst house, 50 per cent of us willreach for a tablet or smartphone first for all of ouronline activities by 2018. The majority of thisactivity will be underpinned by cloud; public, private or hybrid. Little wonder that organisationsacross the world are, in the words of MicrosoftCEO Satya Nadella “increasingly evolving towardsa ‘cloud-first, mobile-first’ way of doingbusiness”.

The security industry doesn’t exist in a bubble, and just as cloud and mobile technology arereshaping every other sector, our industry isincreasingly shifting away from ‘on-premise’towards ‘on mobile, in the cloud’ too. The rise ofthe connected home – from smart meters toconnected media and entertainment, from smarttelehealth to security – is just one example of anopportunity that the mobile-cloud combinationpresents for security manufacturers and installersto drive revenues through these emergingtechnologies.

Over the last few years, manufacturers haveinvested significant R&D time and money increating new products and services that keeppace with the changes precipitated by the rise ofmobile plus cloud.

So, if the technology exists, why isn’t theadoption of cloud and mobile security solutionsmore mainstream? The answer is that the industryis currently in transition, as installers everywhereweigh up reservations and concerns with the

potential revenue opportunities they represent. As this influential group within the industry startsto embrace cloud and mobile, we predict anexplosive rise in adoption of the technology. Let’sexamine the two major concerns amongstinstallers, and debunk a couple of myths with theaid of Daniel Wan from Honeywell.

“Most installers are used to working hand inglove with central monitoring stations (CMS's) tosell monitoring services,” says Daniel. “On theface of it, promoting ‘self-monitoring’ –empowering the customer to check their homeand operate their alarm system from anywhere inthe world – has the potential to infringe upon therevenues generated from these offerings. This is amyth. According to a recent market penetrationstudy by CoESS (Confederation of EuropeanSecurity Services), less than 3.9% across the UKare monitored by a security company. Rather thaneating away at existing revenue, installerspushing these services have a real opportunityhere to open up additional, currently-dormantbusiness streams.

“A second hurdle is education,” continuesDaniel. “For installers who have grown upinstalling analogue-based security systems, grasping concepts that are typically the domain ofIT managers, can be intimidating. Again, this neednot be an obstacle. Compared with the technicalchallenges presented by the earliest IPtechnology, installing cloud-based and mobile-enabled security services is relatively userfriendly and straightforward. In addition, asmanufacturers like ourselves make trainingcourses available free of charge for installers, there are a number of ways to quickly get up tospeed on the core principles behind this new setof solutions on the market.”

Finally, the one compelling reason whyinstallers should be jumping in with both feetwhen it comes to adopting cloud and mobiletechnology, and promoting it to their customerbase is changing consumer behaviour.

“The fact is,” concludes Daniel, “end users arenow ready to embrace this technology. Oncetechnologies pass from ‘early adopter’ phase intothe mainstream adoption phase, consumersquickly stop admiring them and start expectingthem. As ever, this is a challenge and anopportunity for installers. Ignore this evolution inhow consumers behave, and you won’t future-proofyour business against the shifting winds in themarket. Embrace it, and there is an opportunity todrive significant revenue today and tomorrow.”

This is a stark warning for analogue–centricinstallers; it is clearly time to seriously considerwidening your service portfolio to include cloudand mobile solution. Otherwise as the customerbase becomes even more reliant upon smartdevices for everyday tasks from homeautomation, security and communications, theywill become more expectant of installers to beable to design and fit compatible solutions.

Opportunities for installers As the dust settles onthe 2015 MobileWorld Congress inBarcelona, let’sconsider the rise ofmobile and cloud-based security servicesand how thistranslates intoopportunities forinstallers

Simplified thermal imagingULIS has announced the availability ofPico640 Gen2, a VGA format 17-micronthermal image sensor for 24/7 security nightvision. The sensor is easy to install because ituses Hync/VSync clocking and an I2Cstandard communication protocol that arecompatible with commercial camerastandards. In addition, Pico640 Gen2 isdescribed as easy to calibrate, even inshutterless mode, due to the predictability ofthe sensor’s behavioural patterns overvarying operating temperatures.

Other improvements include better imagequality through higher image resolution(>300kpixels). This means that users cancapture minute details up to a distance ofseveral hundred metres. The product offersframe rates from 30Hz to 120Hz.

Another parameter, the NEDT (NoiseEquivalent Differential Temperature), has alsobeen upgraded. NEDT enables a longerdetection range and crisper images; thelower the NEDT, the sharper the image.Dipping far below 50mK means that thismodel has achieved a more than 15%improvement over earlier generations, without any trade-off in power consumption. It operates at less than 130mW with a 60Hzframe rate. This is in contrast to otherthermal imaging sensors in this category, which tend to consume more power, typically>200 to 350mW at an equivalent frame rate.www.ulis-ir.com

PROMOTION

There are many hugely powerful and feature-rich security systems out there. Often thesesystems are designed to fulfil the

requirements of very large projects and enterprise-level installations. Even if the system didn’t startout that way, it often ends up becoming bloatedwith many specialised and project-orientedfeatures. The allure of high value contracts is toostrong to resist!

While many regard more and more features asonly being a good thing, the associated complexitycan often lead to unsuitability for the mid-market.The truth is that the vast majority of non-residentialbuildings fit into the mid-market category, and arenot large projects. While the large projectsdominate the industry news columns, the greatestrevenue potential lies within the unsung mid-market.

Making advanced security systems practical andrelevant to these types of buildings is essential tothe development of the security industry. Paxtonhas a track record in this area. In fact, I would goso far as to say that doing this has been a majorpart of Paxton's long term success, allowing us tomore than double the prevailing market growthevery year for the last 20 years.

Success in the mid-marketFirstly, what is the mid-market? Schools, gyms, shops, factories, offices, warehouses and muchmore. In access control terms, anything from 1door to 50 doors.

Some assume that the only requirements forbeing successful in the mid-market are affordabilityand a reduced feature set (masquerading as

simplicity). This is not correct. I would say the key to success

is accessibility to the customer. That means the local security

installer, who the customer islikely to already have a

relationship with, mustbe primed to

recommend andinstall the system.

To achievethis, installer

training coursesmust be readily

available, thesystem must besimple to sell,

install and use(easy to say, difficult

to achieve). The pre andpost-sale support must be

first-class including telephone support, on-sitesupport and returns policies. All of these thingsare flags waved by many manufacturers as'standard offerings', but to really do them properlyrequires massive investment and commitment. Thewhole of Paxton is geared towards this and that'swhat it takes.

Implications for the futureCustomers are demanding ever more from theirsecurity systems. Quite right too. In most otherareas of technology the pace of change is frenetic, with products evolving and improving faster thanever before. In terms of buildings, it is no longersatisfactory to have multiple systems beingadministered and managed separately. Today'sbuildings must be more secure, convenient andenergy efficient.

The security industry currently satisfies thecustomer's requirement for cross-functionalsystems by facilitating integration. This 'pickand mix' approach, while very suitable for largeprojects, is not right for the mid-market. Thehassle associated with selling, installing, usingand maintaining separate systems is enough of aturn-off on its own. Add to that the complexityof getting systems to talk to each other, and thendo something useful is the final nail in the coffin. As far as supporting the integrated mega-system, good luck. We recently conducted asurvey of 1,400 Net2 sites. Even though aroundhalf of all these sites had some type of videosurveillance in place, only 1.6% of all the Net2systems were integrated with video (despitesupporting integration to all the market leaders). This sobering statistic demonstrates the failureof the integration approach to penetrate thispart of the market.

I believe that the requirements outlined abovewill give rise to a new breed of 'buildingintelligence' systems offering cross-functionality ina single system. Why incur the cost and effort ofinstalling several systems when the technologyavailable today provides more than enoughperformance for a single system to achievemultiple tasks? Why add the complication ofmultiple systems when a single buildingintelligence system can satisfy your requirements? Why rely on multiple manufacturers that provide alimited subset of integrated functionality when youcan get a truly cross-functional system from asingle supplier?

One thing is clear, there is certainly a place forthe existing 'integration approach' and in manyinstances, it is the best solution. However, ifintegrated functionality is going to penetrate themid-market, then it needs to be provided in asingle package and work out of the box. That'sbuilding intelligence.

St. Mary’s Stadium has decided to usePanomera multifocal sensor technology fromDallmeier when modernising its CCTV

system. The Stadium is the home of SouthamptonFC and holds more than 32,000 spectators, makingit the largest football stadium in the South ofEngland outside of London.

A video surveillance system has been in placein the stadium for many years, monitoring thespectator terraces, the club shop, entrances andcar parks – however it was deemed time to updatethe system. “Previously, we had used analogue

cameras, and now we wanted to change to HD technology, to improve image quality, particularly for monitoring the terraces. The stadiumis sold out regularly, and with the new video system we can offer our visitors even greater safety,” says Mark Hannibal, Venue SafetyManager.

The safety officers decided to place their faith in the Panomera MFS technology from Dallmeier for their monitoring needs, particularlyfor safeguarding the visiting fans area in the north terrace, called the Northam Stand.

“We had heard about this new technology at a conference held by the Football Safety Officers Association, and we then talked toEverton FC, who were already using the new camera technology in their Goodison Park Stadium,” Mark Hannibal continues.

MFS technology makes it possible to keep the entire northern stand in view at one time. Even when the security operators arecurrently zoomed in on a suspicious individual, unlike with conventional PTZ cameras the system continues recording the rest of thescene. This then ensures that no incident is unseen and can be investigated in the highest possible resolution at any time afterwards aswell.

The safety officers were convinced of the technology’s capabilities with a test installation at a Southampton FC match. More than that:St. Mary’s Stadium decided to implement not only the Panomera but an entire installation by Dallmeier.

The entire system including the workstations was already preconfigured by Dallmeier prior to shipping and the equipment wasinstalled by Caldera Fire & Security, who had worked previously as the installer for St. Mary’s Stadium. After commissioning, both Calderaand the stadium security operators received training from Dallmeier.

The Stadium is happy with its choice. “The clarity of the images has dramatically improved the view of all supporters, we have alreadymarked up our first successes with it. Several offenders have made admissions of guilt very quickly after being confronted with theexcellent imaging material,” says Mark Hannibal. www.dallmeier.com

Bespoke fire systemfor Spring MewsEaton has announced that it wasselected by ABCA Systems todeliver a fire alarm system foraccommodation, leisure and retailfacility Spring Mews in Vauxhall.

In order to support businesscontinuity, the Spring Mewsproject required a bespoke firealarm solution with a range ofcause-and-effect programming to meet the differing detection andalarm requirements for each of its facilities, including permanent ortemporary accommodation, retail units and business premises.

ABCA Systems chose to install 14 of Eaton’s CF3000 addressablecontrol panels throughout the new facilities as a solution to thedemands put on it by the diversity of the multiple-use premises.

“We recommended these specific addressable control panels toABCA Systems due to their functionality with simple operation,”added Mike Slater, Sales Account Manager at Eaton. “Additionally, their aesthetically pleasing design fits in perfectly within the newluxury facilities.”

In addition to the panels, an array of fire ancillaries were alsoinstalled, including a ‘bell tone’ electronic sounder that wasdeveloped for the Spring Mews project.

“The installation process was fast paced and no challenges wereencountered during it,” said Philip Miller, Managing Director ofABCA Systems. “Although we had a few difficulties due to putting atwo year programme into one, the panels worked well throughout.”www.cooperfire.com

Airport makes cablecost savingsLinden Airport in the New YorkCity metro area is home to lightaircraft traffic and covers an areaof 188 acres handling over 120flight operations each day.Utilising a grant from theDepartment of Homeland

Security, Linden Airport management recently upgraded theairport’s overall security. The modernisation included theinstallation of numerous IP surveillance cameras and associatedvideo analytics, and an access control system with modern badgingand biometrics.

The touch points of the upgrade carried out by Technocalityincluded fence entry points, public areas, fuel storage farm, hangars, runways and airport staff offices. With regard to IPsurveillance, some of these locations were at signal transmissiondistances well beyond normal IEEE 100m Category 5 cablestandards. This extended transmission distance became theapplication challenge and saw the installer search for an IPtransmission product that would be able to meet this requirement.

After a review of the transmission technologies available,Network Video Technologies’ (NVT) TBus Ethernet over UTP/ Coaxtransmission technology was selected. The cable cost savings weremade by NVT TBus technology affording the re-use of many existingcables within the airport site for IP and PoE transmission, withdistances ranging from 50 to 1,000ft via RG6 and RG59U coax andCat3 voice grade cable.

The use of the technology at the site has been so successful thatin future, Linden Airport plans to include additional IP surveillancecameras, which will be connected and powered by NVT’s TBusEthernet and PoE product technology.www.nvt.com

Cameras safely secure theHarbourAs Dún Laoghaire Harbour in Ireland transformsfrom a ferry terminal into a marine, leisure andtourism destination, the infusion of newbusinesses over the last few years has served tohighlight the shortcomings of the existinganalogue CCTV system and its inability to securethe whole site. Now, the entire 100-hectareharbour complex is protected by a Hikvision hybridsolution designed and installed by Mercury SD.

The new system retains all the existing coaxcable within the harbour and uses 18 of theexisting analogue CTV cameras to watch over theoriginal ferry terminal and its immediate

surroundings. The new Hikvision SMART IPcameras have been added: some to the coaxcabling using IP over Coax transceivers but mostover Ubiquiti wireless links to extend the reachand scope of the surveillance to the furtherreaches of the harbour. All of the cameras linkback to the pair of hybrid recorders in the harbourmaster's office, from where the PTZ IR speed domecamera located at the lighthouse is controlled.

The DS-2DF7284-A IR speed dome installedat the lighthouse oversees some of the busiestparts of the harbour and is a core CCTV feed forthe harbour team. This PTZ camera provides360° surveillance through its panning capability, offers a 20x optical zoom capability to detect thesmallest details and combines this with an IRrange of up to 120 metres. The camera can alsobe shared by the emergency sea rescue servicesin the event of an incident in close proximity. Allthe other cameras are enclosed in a marinegrade housing; being DS-2CD4012F 1.3megapixel SMART IPC units along with DS-2CD4032F-A 3 megapixel pieces. All offer triplevideo streams, multiple alarm triggers, atransmission rate of up to 150 Mbps and 802.11nwireless support. Finally, the DS-9016HFI-ST16/16 Hybrid Recorders enabled the new SMARTIP cameras to be added while retaining themajority of the older analogue cameras.www.hikvision.com

Walsall Housing Group installs380 camerasWalsall Housing Group (whg) has improvedresident safety with the installation of 380Panasonic surveillance cameras that cover 17 highrise blocks. whg Technical Specialist, Paul Martin, said, “Before the surveillance system wasinstalled, we relied on foot patrols to monitor theblocks every night. With a maximum of only twopatrols per night, we weren’t really catchinganything. With the CCTV recording 24 hours a dayit means we can catch more and be reactive. Fromour control room we can identify incidents andalert our patrols so they can investigate.”

whg has been able to assist the police with thehelp of the CCTV system to aid in prosecutionsand investigations. Their work with the policeincludes shutting down and preventing illegalactivity, often external to the whg properties.

Paul Martin recalls, “On one occasion we wereasked to help with an investigation in to a manwho had allegedly stolen a car. The police askedhim where he had been at the time, and heclaimed to be in the pub down the road. We had alook through the CCTV and we managed to pull upa man matching his description and the location. The police were able to use that footage to aid ina prosecution.”

The network of cameras are displayed on a 5x2video wall configuration of 55” Panasonicdisplays located in the whg control room. Activitycaptured by any camera is automatically broughtup on screen through motion detection, savingthe need for manually patrolling through thehundreds of cameras.

Panasonic also developed an incident managerpackage specifically for the Group. This makes iteasy to track any incidents and integrates withwhg's CRM software, allowing for efficientreporting.

The security solution also benefits from anaudio system which allows staff in the controlroom to communicate with potential troublemakers caught on camera. panasonic.net

New sports bar invests in firedetectionCorey’s Sports Bar, a newly refurbished nightspotin Tamworth, has invested in a fire detectionsolution from Fike Safety Technology (FST).Located in the town centre, the new bar opened atthe end of 2014 and offers local residents sports, music, entertainment and food - seven days aweek.

FST approved systems integrator, Justice Fire &Security, designed and installed a solution basedon the company’s Duonet single-loop intelligentaddressable fire alarm system. “The technologybuilt into the Duonet panel is designed tosignificantly reduce false alarms and provide theflexibility required for demanding environmentssuch as nightclubs” explained, Steve Grant,Installations Manager of Justice Fire & Security.

Forty devices including Multipoint ASDdetectors, call points, sounders and beacons, were installed in the bar - up to 200 devices canbe installed on a single loop. The Multipoint ASDdetector provides flexibility through choices ofdetection mode, combined with an optional built-in 90dBA sounder and strobe. The unit can be setto a single mode or a combination, for a choice ofup to 15 different settings. Each detector also hasan in-built loop isolator as well as optional I/O forlocal control and switching. This single device canbe used in all fire detection applications simplyby changing its mode of operation. For example, the detectors protecting the dance floor havebeen programmed to a heat mode as the bar usesa smoke machine for effects. This flexibility alsoallows the system to be easily re-configured if thelayout of the venue changes at any time in thefuture.

To aid evacuation in the event of fire, standalone strobes were installed in the toilets aswell as on detectors on the dance floor. The use ofintegral strobes eliminates the need to install aseparate strobe and therefore saves time andmoney. Loop mounted I/O modules were used toautomatically turn off the sound system and turnon the lighting if an alarm is triggered. www.fikesafetytech.co.uk
