When information overwhelms us and fear overtakes us, speak to us again those comforting

”Though we cannot be physically close to others, give us the ability and courage
to love as well as we can, since “perfect love casts out all fear.”
Direct your caring gaze on doctors and nurses, researchers and safety personnel;
Come to strengthen the sick, the vulnerable, and comfort those who are grief stricken.
And when the pandemic has passed, and this frightening crisis is resolved, teach us to know You more certainly
as our dearest Friend and our only Hope.
You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen.

Ma Nishtana, são as duas primeiras palavras de uma frase que significam "Por que esta noite é diferente
de todas as outras noites?" A frase aparece no início de cada linha das Quatro Perguntas, tradicionalmente perguntadas por música pela criança mais jovem que frequenta o Passover Seder.
Podemos muito bem perguntar o mesmo: por que esta noite, esta liturgia, este ano, é diferente de
todsos as outros. As duas noites, mais importantes para nossa tradição católica, nas quais nos reunimos na igreja para celebrar são a Missa da Meia-Noite no Natal e a Vigília Pascal. Esta é a liturgia que é tão diferente de todas as outras, até chamada de mãe de todas as liturgias. Começa em uma igreja escura, uma hora após o pôr do sol, para que não haja luz fluindo de fora. Normalmente começa com um fogo que é abençoado do qual acendemos o Círio Pascal. Senhor, Vos pedimos: fazei que este círio pascal, consagrado ao Vosso nome, brilhe sem declínio e afugente as trevas desta noite. Que o astro da manhã, o encontre ainda aceso, aquele que não conhece ocaso: o Cristo ressuscitado dos mortos, que espalha sobre os homens sua luz e sua paz. Ele que convosco vive e reina na unidade do Espírito Santo. (do Precónio ~ Proclamação da Páscoa) A Liturgia continua com leituras, lembrando-nos como Deus nos levou ao ponto em que cantamos com todos os anjos da Glória da Ressurreição, quando Cristo venceu a morte para nossa salvação e para que entremos na vida eterna. CRISTO RESSUSCITOU! "Cristo ressuscitou! Verdadeiramente, ele ressuscitou! Nesta noite, cel-ebramos não menos o mistério de nossa salvação quando Cristo vence a morte e anuncia a ressurreição para todos que crêem. Entrar na igreja na escuridão nos lembra que estamos no útero, a tumba escura da qual somos chamados a renascer. Mas neste ano esta noite é muito diferente. Não estamos juntos na igreja, cada um de nós estará celebrando de uma maneira muito diferente esta realidade de que Cristo real-mente ressuscitou e está em nosso meio, mesmo estando separados! É nesta realidade pascal que ainda renovaremos nossas promessas batismais, porque o Senhor ressuscitou e “conquistou o poder da morte e nos abriu o caminho para a vida eterna”. “Senhor Deus do Universo, que neste dia, pelo vosso Filho Unigênito, vencedor da morte, nos abristes as portas da eternidade, concedei-nos que, celebrando a solenidade da ressurreição de Cristo, renovados pelo vosso Espírito, ressuscitemos para a luz da vida.” (da oração de colecta do domingo de Páscoa). E que o Senhor ressuscitado respire em nossas mentes e abra nossos olhos para que possamos conhecê-Lo na Pa-lavra, no partir do pão, e segui-Lo em Sua vida ressuscitada!

Ma Nishtana, are the first two words in a phrase meaning "Why is tonight different from all other
nights?" The phrase appears at the beginning of each line of The Four Questions, traditionally asked via song by the youngest capable child attending Passover Seder.
We may very well ask the same: Why is this night, this Liturgy, this year, different from every other.
The two nights, so important to our Catholic tradition, on which we gather in church to celebrate are the Midnight Mass at Christmas and the Easter Vigil. This is the Liturgy which is so different from all others, even called the Mother of all Liturgies. It begins in a darkened church, one hour after sunset so that there is no light streaming in from outside. It normally begins with a fire that is blessed from which we light the Paschal Candle.
O Lord, we pray you that this candle, hallowed to the honor of your name, may persevere un-dimmed, to overcome the darkness of this night. Receive it as a pleasing fragrance, and let it mingle with the lights of heaven. May this flame be found still burning by the Morning Star: the one Morning Star who never sets, Christ your Son, who, coming back from death's domain, has shed his peaceful light on humani-ty, and lives and reigns for ever and ever. (from the Exsultet ~ The Easter Proclamation) The Liturgy then continues with readings reminding us how God has brought us to the point when we
sing with all the angels of the Glory of the Resurrection, when Christ conquered death for our salvation and for us to enter into eternal life. CHRIST IS RISEN! “Christ is Risen! Truly, He is Risen!” This night we celebrate no less the
mystery of our Salvation when Christ tramples death and ushers in the Resurrection for all who be-lieve. Entering the church in darkness reminds us that we are in the womb, the darkened tomb from which we are called to be reborn. But this year this night is very different. We are not together in church, each of us celebrates in a very different way the reality that Christ is truly Risen and is in our midst, even though we are apart! It is in this Easter reality that we will still renew our Baptismal promises because the Lord is raised and has “conquered the power of death and opened for us the way to eternal life.” “O God, who on this day, through your Only Begotten Son, have conquered death and unlocked for us the path to eternity,grant, we pray, that we who keep the solemnity of the Lord’s Resurrection may, through the renewal brought by your Spirit, rise up in the light of life.” (from the Opening prayer for Easter Sunday). And may the risen Lord breathe on our minds and open our eyes that we may know Him in the Word, in the breaking of the bread, and follow Him in His risen life!

ORAÇÃO NO TEMPO DE UMA PANDEMIA Senhor Jesus, Vós que prometestes ficar sempre conosco, Quando a informação nos oprime e o medo nos domina, fale conosco novamente aquelas palavras reconfortantes: "A paz esteja convosco." Embora não podemos estar fisicamente próximos uns dos outros, dê-nos a capacidade e a coragem de amar o melhor que podemos, já que "o amor perfeito expul-sa todo o medo". Dirija o seu olhar atencioso para os médicos, enfermeiras, pesquisadores e pessoal de segurança; Venha para fortalecer os doentes, os vulneráveis e confortar os que sofrem. E quando a pandemia tiver passado e a crise que amedontra for resolvida, ensina-nos a conhecê-Lo com mais certe-za e como o nosso mais querido amigo e nossa única Es-perança. LEITURA I Actos 10, 34a.37-43 «Comemos e bebemos com Ele, depois de ter ressuscitado dos mortos» Leitura dos Actos dos Apóstolos Naqueles dias, Pedro tomou a palavra e disse: «Vós sabeis o que aconteceu em toda a Judeia, a começar pela Galileia, depois do baptismo que João pregou: Deus ungiu com a força do Espírito Santo a Jesus de Nazaré, que passou fazendo o bem e curando a todos os que eram oprimidos pelo Demónio, porque Deus estava com Ele. Nós somos testemunhas de tudo o que Ele fez no país dos Judeus e em Jerusalém; e eles mataram-n’O, suspendendo-O na cruz. Debruçando-se, viu as ligaduras no chão, mas não entrou. Entre-tanto, chegou também Simão Pedro, que o seguira. Entrou no sepulcro e viu as ligaduras no chão e o sudário que tinha estado sobre a cabeça de Jesus, não com as ligaduras, mas enrolado à parte. Entrou também o outro discípulo que chegara primeiro ao sepul-cro: viu e acreditou. Na verdade, ainda não tinham entendido a Escritura, segundo a qual Jesus devia ressuscitar dos mortos. 3rd Sunday of Lent (Cycle A) The Israelites' hearts were hardened by their hardships in the desert. Though they saw His mighty deeds, in their thirst they grumble and put God to the test in to-day's First Reading - a crisis point recalled also in to-day's Psalm. Jesus is thirsty too in today's Gospel. He thirsts for souls (see John 19:28). He longs to give the Samaritan woman the living waters that well up to eternal life. These waters couldn't be drawn from the well of Jacob, father of the Israelites and the Samaritans. But Jesus was something greater than Jacob (see Luke 11:31-32). The Samaritans were Israelites who escaped exile when Assyria conquered the Northern Kingdom eight centuries before Christ (see 2 Kings 17:6, 24-41). They were despised for intermarrying with non-Israelites and worshipping at Mount Gerazim, not Jerusalem. But Jesus tells the woman that the "hour" of true wor-ship is coming, when all will worship God in Spirit and truth. Jesus' "hour" is the "appointed time" that Paul speaks of in today's Epistle. It is the hour when the Rock of our salvation was struck on the Cross. Struck by the soldier's lance, living waters flowed out from our Rock (see John 19:34-37). These waters are the Holy Spirit (see John 7:38-39), the gift of God (see Hebrews 6:4). By the living waters the ancient enmities of Samaritans and Jews have been washed away, the dividing wall between Israel and the nations is broken down (see Ephesians 2:12-14, 18). Since His hour, all may drink of the Spirit in Baptism (see 1 Corinthians 12:13). In this Eucharist, the Lord now is in our midst - as He was at the Rock of Horeb and at the well of Jacob. In the "today" of our Liturgy, He calls us to believe: "I am He," come to pour out the love of God into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. How can we continue to worship as if we don't understand? How can our hearts remain hardened?

Gospel JN 20:1-9 On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

Easter Sunday (Cycle B) The tomb was empty. In the early morning darkness of that first Easter, there was only confusion for Mary Magdalene and the other disciples. But as the daylight spread, they saw the dawning of a new crea-tion. At first they didn't understand the Scripture, to-day's Gospel tells us. We don't know which precise Scripture texts they were supposed to understand. Perhaps it was the sign of Jonah, who rose from the belly of the great fish after three days (see Jonah 1:17). Or maybe Hosea's prophecy of Israel's restora-tion from exile (see Hosea 6:2). Perhaps it was the psalmist who rejoiced that God had not abandoned him to the nether world (see Psalm 16:9-10). Whichever Scripture it was, as the disciples bent down into the tomb, they saw and they believed. What did they see? Burial shrouds in an empty tomb. The stone removed from the tomb. Seven times in nine verses we hear that word - "tomb." What did they believe? That God had done what Jesus said He would do - raised Him up on the third day (see Mark 9:31; 10:34). What they saw and believed, they bore witness to, as today's First Reading tells us. Peter's speech is a summary of the gospels - from Jesus' baptism in the Jordan to His hanging on a tree (see Deuteronomy 21:22-23), to His rising from the dead. We are children of the apostles, born into the new world of their witness. Our lives are now "hidden with Christ in God," as today's Epistle says. Like them, we gather in the morning on the first day of the week - to celebrate the Eucharist, the feast of the empty tomb. We rejoice that the stones have been rolled away from our tombs, too. Each of us can shout, as we do in today's Psalm: "I shall not die, but live." They saw and believed. And we await the day they promised would come - when we, too, "will ap-pear with Him in glory."
Domingo de Páscoa A liturgia deste domingo celebra a ressurreição e garante-nos que a vida em plenitude resulta de uma existência feita dom e serviço em favor dos irmãos. A ressurreição de Cristo é o exemplo concreto que confirma tudo isto. A primeira leitura apresenta o exemplo de Cristo que “passou pelo mundo fazendo o bem” e que, por amor, Se deu até à morte; por isso, Deus ressuscitou-O. Os discípulos, testemunhas desta dinâmica, devem anunciar este “caminho” a todos os homens. O Evangelho coloca-nos diante de duas atitudes face à ressurreição: a do discípulo obstinado, que se recu-sa a aceitá-la porque, na sua lógica, o amor total e a doação da vida não podem nunca ser geradores de vida nova; e o discípulo ideal, que ama Jesus e que, por isso, entende o seu caminho e a sua proposta a esse não o escandaliza nem o espanta que da cruz tenha nascido a vida plena, a vida verdadeira. A segunda leitura convida os cristãos, revestidos de Cristo pelo Baptismo, a continuarem a sua caminha-da de vida nova, até à transformação plena que acon-tecerá quando, pela morte, tivermos ultrapassado a última fronteira da nossa finitude. .

Easter Sunday Jesus is nowhere visible. Yet today's Gospel tells us that Peter and John "saw and believed." What did they see? Burial shrouds lying on the floor of an empty tomb. Maybe that convinced them that He hadn't been carted off by grave robbers, who usu-ally stole the expensive burial linens and left the corpses behind. But notice the repetition of the word "tomb" - seven times in nine verses. They saw the empty tomb and they believed what He had promised: that God would raise Him on the third day. Chosen to be His "witnesses," today's First Reading tells us, the Apostles were "commissioned...to preach...and testify" to all that they had seen - from His anointing with the Holy Spirit at the Jordan to the empty tomb. More than their own experience, they were instructed in the mysteries of the divine economy, God's saving plan - to know how "all the prophets bear witness" to Him (see Luke 24:27,44). Now they could "understand the Scripture," could teach us what He had told them - that He was "the Stone which the builders rejected," that today's Psalm prophesies His Resurrection and exaltation (see Luke 20:17; Matthew 21:42; Acts 4:11). We are the children of the apostolic witnesses. That is why we still gather early in the morning on the first day of every week to celebrate this feast of the empty tomb, give thanks for "Christ our life," as to-day's Epistle calls Him. Baptized into His death and Resurrection, we live the heavenly life of the risen Christ, our lives "hidden with Christ in God." We are now His witnesses, too. But we testify to things we cannot see but only be-lieve; we seek in earthly things what is above. We live in memory of the Apostles' witness, like them eating and drinking with the risen Lord at the altar. And we wait in hope for what the Apostles told us would come - the day when we too "will appear

Anointing of the Sick The church encourages & invites all who are ill, who are to undergo surgery, or who are confined to their home due to illness to be prayed over & anointed with sacred oil. This can take place after Mass, at home or at the hospital. Please
do not wait for the last moment for yourself or a loved one to be anointed. The last sacrament is Viaticum or commun-ion for the dying. Please speak to a priest for anointing.
