PastoralistVoicesonClimateChange,adocumentaryproducedanddirectedbyJoanaRoqueDePinho.RoqueDePinhoisapostdoctoralresearcheratInstitutoSuperiordeCinciasSociaisePolticas,inLisbon,Portugal.Shealsocowrote,codirected,andcoproducedtheawardwinningdocumentaryThroughourEyes:AMaasaiPhotographicJourneywithLindseySimpson,whoalsoworksontheVoicesproject.BothwomenaregraduatesofColoradoStateUniversity.ThefilmteamalsoincludesNicholasTapia,aCSUvideographerandalumni.

documentary
is
produced
in
conjunction
with
the
Livestock
Climate
Change
Collaborative
ResearchSupportProgramsPastoralTransformationstoResilientFutures:UnderstandingClimatefromtheGroundUp(PTRF)projectledbyDr.KathleenGalvinandRobinReid,fromCSU.TheConsultativeGrouponInternationalAgricultural
Researchs(CGIAR)ResearchProgramonClimateChange,AgricultureandFoodSecurity(CCAFS)hasalsolentsupportto
thefilm.
Itisvitallyimportanttousthatourresearchserveslocalpeople.Therefore,gettinganunderstandingofclimatechange
fromthegroundupiscriticaltoknowingwhatcanbedonetomitigateoradapttoit,explainsGalvin.
ThefilmwillillustratethecollaborativeandparticipatoryprocessbetweenCSUscientistsandpastoralistlivestock
keepersinKenya,documentingtwocollaborativeworkshopswherebylocallandusersdirectlyinformthescientific
processandclimatechangescience,which,inturn,feedsbacktolocaldecisionmaking.
ThefoundationofbothPastoralistVoicesandthePTRFprojectisthatclimatechangeisacomplicated,dynamicpuzzlethatcanonlybesolvedbythecollectiveeffortofallstakeholders.
Asascientist,Imonlybringingonelittlepieceofthe
puzzle,saysGalvin.
Climatechangeisreal,assertsaworkshopparticipantinthedocumentary.RoqueDePinhoagrees.InAmboseli,
peoplehavetalkedtomeabouthavinglosttheabilityofpredictingwhentherainswillcome,becauseofchangesin
rainingpatterns.Duringthelastdrought,in20082009,theworstinlivingmemory,someMaasaimotherswonderedif

theiryoungchildrenwereevenMaasaianymoreTheyaregrowingupwithoutdrinkingmilk,whichisthe
quintessentialMaasaifood.
RoqueDePinhoandGalvinhopethedocumentarycanhelppastoraliststoexplainthesekindsofsocioeconomicand
culturalshiftsrelatedtoclimatechange.Myhopeisthatpeopleatvariouspolicylevelswillseethisfilmandlistento
knowwhatishappeningontheground,saysGalvin.
GregoryAkall,aresearcherandpressofficerwiththeUnitedNationsinKenya,believespastoralistcommunitieshavea
lotofknowledgetocontribute.Ashesaysinthedocumentary,Thesepeoplehaveawealthofknowledgeonhowto
cope.Theyhavemanagedtocopeforcenturies.Thisisalifestylethathasstoodthetestoftime.
Galvinbelievesthatpastoralcommunitiesneedagreatervoiceindecisionmakingthataffectsthem.Ourgoalistostart
adialogatvariouspolicylevelswithlocalpeopletoaddressissuesrelatedtoclimatechange.Thisisawaytogiveavoice
tomarginalizedpeople.Thiscouldbethefirststeptowardsgettingpastoralistsaseatatthetableinimportantpolicy
decisions,sheexplained.
Duringthenextninemonths,thePRTFandPastoralistVoicesteamwillreturntoKenyaforadditionalworkshops,interviews,andfilming.Thefulllengthdocumentarywillbereleasedinthespringof2012.
