CRZ Program
The establishment of Clean River Zones (CRZs) is a key implementation strategy of PRRC. CRZs are model
communities established near or along tributaries of the Pasig River implementing zero-waste dumping
policies into waterways supported by self-sustaining land-based and water-based programs.
Vision A Pasig River, Clean and Alive, reflecting the countrys noble history and socio -economic progress
Mission To rehabilitate the Pasig River by applying bio-eco engineering and advocating social awareness
and community involvement to attain a sustainable socio-economic development
Goals To attain class C water quality, which is suitable for fisheries, recreation and industrial use of
treated waste water.
Objectives
To establish and maintain the legal easement for rivers, creeks and esteros;
To establish buffer zones and avoid fortuitous events like floods;To remove solid wastes and eradicate
trash disposal into the river system;
To allocate low cost and decent housing with complete facilities for informal settlers
To create livelihood opportunities through skills trainings and seminars;
To cultivate potentials for entrepreneurship through micro-financing;
To install aeration - filtration devices that improves water quality;
To impose dispensing of treated waste water;
To advocate social involvement and institutionalize the usage of Material Recovery Facilities that
would not only resolve garbage problems, but also generates livelihood within the community;
To form partnership with different sectors to achieve common goal;
To introduce innovations that promotes not only socio economic opportunities, also better quality
of life;
To ascertain religious adherence of Local and National Agencies on the existing provisions of the law
to protect our natural water resources;
To inform, educate and motivate surrounding communities on the rehabilitation process;
To dedicate standard education for children;

Dredging is an excavation activity or operation usually carried out at least partly underwater, in shallow
seas or fresh water areas with the purpose of gathering up bottom sediments and disposing of them at a
different location. This technique is often used to keep waterways navigable.
Environmental Preservation Areas
Environmental Preservation Areas (EPAs) - is the form of linear parks, walkways and greenbelts on both
side of the Pasig River. A total of 24.64 linear meters of parks have been completed extending from the
City of Manila to Taguig City.

Bioremediation
Bioremediation is the process of using biological
agents, such as bacteria or plants, to remove or neutralize contaminants in the soil or water.
We are piloting a scheme along the stretch of an 800 m. X 1.1 m. parapet wall in Barangay Napindan,
Taguig City. The wastewater in the pilot site comes from domestic waste of about 79 households in the
area.

Phytoremediation
Treatment and Greening of Pasig River Using Millionaires Vine Plant
The Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission is using the toxic absorbing capability and aesthetically
pleasing characteristics of the Millionaires Vine Plant for the treatment of the contaminated waters ofPasig River and the greening of its riverbanks. This method is called phytoremediation.
What is Phytoremediation?
is the process of using biological agents, such as bacteria or plants, to remove or neutralize
contaminants in the soil or water.. It is a natural, low cost, clean, and efficient way to treat the
environment. It can be used in conjunction with other methods of remediation as a finishing step to the
treatment process.
The Millionaires Vine Plant
For Pasig River, vine stocks from Aurora Province was gathered and transported to a nursery at the
Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau in Quezon

City. The stocks are inoculated with effective species of microorganisms to:
a. Prevent root infection caused by pathogens
b. Promote absorption and increase tolerance of toxic substances in the river water
c. Promote absorption of nutrients such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and zinc
The stocks are watered regularly with wastewater from Pasig River and its nutritional requirements are
supplied appropriately. Unlike other plants used for phytoremediation the millionaires vine plant is not
edible thus removing the hazard of people along the banks of Pasig River from using it for food and
eventually absorbing the toxic intakes of the plant.

Water Hyacinth(Eichhornia crassipes Mart Solms)
Mistakenly called water lily and considered a super pest in the Philippines, water hyacinths is in fact
one of the most hardworking natural wastewater purifiers. It feeds upon many types of air and water
pollutants, manufactures fresh oxygen and is aesthetically pleasing when in full bloom. It indicates the
level of pollution in the water the healthier it is the more polluted the water, the thinner it is or the
absence of it the cleaner the water. It is used in flower arrangements and in making bags, baskets,
decorative ropes and strings.
Trivia
It is nearly impossible to destroy water hyacinths because it can multiply rapidly and its seeds, under
ideal conditions, can remain dormant for 20 years under water and germinate when the time is ripe.

Cattail(Typha latifola)
A tough pollution fighter, cattails grow in almost all types of soil and water conditions. It feeds on
nitrogen, lead, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and domestic as well as domestic and industrial
wastewater. Aesthetically, it is for ideal landscaping since it prevents soil erosion. The plant is used for
handicrafts, flower arrangements, and siding and roofing materials while its flowers are used for jacket
linings and pillows. Its roots, tubers and young shoots are edible and are excellent source of starch.

Duckweed(Lemnaceae sp)
An excellent domestic wastewater cleaning agent this plant is found anywhere, except in very cold
regions. An acre of duckweeds can annually absorb and remove 2,351 lbs. of nitrogen, 588 lbs. of
phosphorus, 784 lbs. of potassium, 780 lbs. of calcium, 235 lbs. of sulfur, 313 lbs of magnesium, and 392
lbs. of chloride in the water. It is used as feed additives for poultry, hogs and cattle; and food for fish and
fowl.

Bulrush(Scirpus validus)
This versatile plant is usually found in marshlands and polluted riverbanks. The center of its stalks isfleshy and affords the easy flow of water and nutrients up and down the plant. Like cattails, it is also
used for landscaping, handicrafts, flowers arrangements, and siding and roofing materials. Its tubers and
young center shoots are ideal for salads.
Jar Experiment on the Capability of Millionaires Vine Plant for Wastewater Treatment
A 1.5 liter of wastewater sample was taken from a
household drainage in Barangay Napindan, Pasig City. The wastewater is murky and has a foul odor.
Twelve (12) roots of millionaires vine plant were placed inside the bottle where the wastewater is

contained. After seven days of phytoremediation, the wastewater becomes less murky and the foul odor
was removed.

Definition of terms
Aeration- is the process by which air is circulated through, mixed with or dissolved in a liquid or
substance.
Filtration- is commonly the mechanical or physical operation which is used for the separation of solids
from fluids (liquids or gases) by interposing a medium through which only the fluid can pass
Dredging- Dredging is an excavation activity or operation usually carried out at least partly underwater,
in shallow seas or fresh water areas with the purpose of gathering up bottom sediments and disposing

Bioremediation- is the use of microorganism metabolism to remove pollutants. Technologies can be
generally classified as in situ or ex situ. In situ bioremediation involves treating the contaminated
material at the site, while ex situ involves the removal of the contaminated material to be treated
elsewhere
Material recovery facility- materials reclamation facility or materials recycling facility (MRF - pronounced
"murf") is a specialized plant that receives, separates and prepares recyclable materials for marketing to
end-user manufacturers
