Principal’s Note

Hello and welcome to my Principal’s Note for Week 7.

The past week was another busy period for all school

community members. Thank you to the team for continu-

ing to turn up each day with a strong commitment to en-

suring every student, every day, in every classroom, is

succeeding.

Attendance

The 2017 School Attendance Target is 95%, for Week

6 our school’s attendance rate was 91%.

Week 6 Attendance Data: Prep – 95.38%, Yr 1/2 –

91.43%, Yr 2/3 – 81.33%, Yr 4 – 93.75%, Yr 5/6 –

98.82%, Yr 7-10 – 81.67%.

Highest attendance for Week 6: Yr 5/6 – 98.82%!

Why must I send my child to school? Under Queensland law, you must make sure your child of school age is enrolled and attends school all day, every school day unless they have a reasonable excuse. Illness, doing work experience, competing in a school sporting event or going on a school excursion are reasonable excus-es for being absent from school. Principals decide if the excuse given for your child’s absence is reasonable. Avoid keeping your child away from school for: Birthdays, shopping, visiting family

and friends, if they sleep in, looking after other children, minor check-ups or care such as haircuts.

Routine medical or other health appointments should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays. While it is a last resort, it is important to understand

that you may be prosecuted if your child is not at-

tending school regularly.

Reminder

Parents, please be aware that students should not ar-

rive at school before 8:30am unless prior arrangements

have been made or specific activities are on. I have no-

ticed a number of students are arriving early. Supervision

does not commence until 8:30am. If students arrive

before 8:30, they must sit and wait for supervision to

commence at 8:30am.

The Great Book Swap is back!

As part of Literacy and Numeracy week, we are seeking donations of preloved books to be sold at school to fund-raise for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Donations can be dropped to the Year 5/6 classroom from Monday

of Week 8.

Books will be available for purchase from the year 5/6 classroom for a gold coin donation during week 10, 8:30-

8:45am.

Head Lice

There have been reports that head lice are cur-rently present at Surat State School. Please check your child’s hair carefully and obtain treat-ment if necessary. It is important that you com-plete recommended follow-up treatments to en-sure your child remains head lice free.

If head lice or eggs are found on your child’s

hair you need to inform:

the school and advise when the treatment

has started

When can my child return to school? Health regulations requires that where a child has head lice, that child should not return to school until the day after appropriate treatment has started. Please note, this refers only to those children who have live head lice and does not refer to head lice eggs.

Hi from THE GREEN PATCH,

Another term already on the downhill slide…Week 7 done and dusted!!

As always there has been plenty happening in and around the Green Patch…here’s a snapshot…

Preps & 1 / 2 found out about worms in the garden…what do they do and why are they so helpful? They looked at an earthworm under the magnifying

glass and made a hotel for worms…we used this to see what worms do underground to help our plants…they sure were busy digging tunnels. We made sure we put them back into our garden af-ter keeping them for a week or two. In the kitchen we had a go at making worms…spaghetti worms…it sure took a long time but we got to use the pasta machine! Last week we planted seeds to look after and when they sprout we will plant them in our garden beds.

The Year 2 / 3 entomologists are doing what entomologists do best – checking out insects. After learning about traits insects have, and armed with a magnifying glass, we headed to the garden to see what we could find and determine if they were insects or not. We have learnt that some insects are beneficial for our garden so we have planted some flowers to encourage them to come and live there. Our insect snacks you saw in a recent newsletter were fun to make and delicious…well most of us thought so anyhow! At present we are making insects from plastic golf balls…our own style of insect, making sure we give it the character traits of an insect…6 legs, 2 antennae, 3 body parts…they will go into our garden bed once we have completed them.

Garden activities for Year 4 and 5 / 6 classes this term are revolving around using recycled materi-als. Year 4 have pointed out a need for better signage for the vegies, so using recycled boards they are making appropriate signs. Hopefully, we will get to have a go at making planters for flowers from old tyres. Year 5 / 6 are in the process of improving the orchard – we have learnt about the nasty fruit fly and have made lure traps in an attempt to control the fly and we are working on covering our trees with old mosquito nets. Last year the flies beat us and stung all our peaches and nectarines …hopefully this year we will beat them at their own game and be able to reap the re-wards! Also, in English earlier this term, we read Dr Seuss’ story, The Lorax …so keeping in theme; we are going to be making our own Trufula Trees for our garden – with recycled materials of course.

THIS IS WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP… to complete these activities we need to source some more materials… recycled materials…we are searching for:

Old, unwanted mosquito nets to cover our fruit trees

Unwanted chicken wire – for our Trufula trees – we do have some but not quite enough…

Unwanted tent pegs or the like, suitable for the long stems of our Trufula trees

If you have any of these items that you are willing to donate, please bring them into school and leave at Mr Newman’s shed. We would really appreciate your help.



In the kitchen, the Year 4’s related their cookery back to their Geography lessons where they learnt about the continents of the world – we cooked (using produce from our garden) and tried a food sample from each con-tinent…Chile con Carne & cornbread from North America; Argentinian Empanadas from South America; Japanese Pancakes from Asia; Gozleme (Turkish flatbreads) from Europe; Bobotie (curry pie) from Africa; Sledg-ing Biscuits from Antarctica and Pavlova from Australia…it was a huge effort to get it all done…but it was great having the opportunity to taste the foods…needless to say the reactions to the different foods were inter-

esting!

The Year 5/6 class made another sit down meal to enjoy...Pumpkin soup & Naan Bread; Cauliflower & Fetta Fritters with Tzatziki; Spanakopita & Greek Salad; Carrot & Beetroot Slaw & Pumpkin Chips – quite a few new foods/flavours for the students to try…some yummy…some not so…but they can say they have tried them. Our main aim is to have students become more confident with their ability in reading, understanding and following recipes…this cookery lesson was our best yet…so we are on track!

The Secondary Students have been focussing on making healthy food choices and the tools available to us to assist us with this…The Australian Dietary Guidelines, The Guide to Healthy Eating and the Smart Choices Strategy. Cookery lessons have revolved around these.
