a little beer history

The history of breweries in the greaterErie region is deep and rich. The first localbrewery opened its doors over 200 yearsago - 36 years before the city of Erie waseven incorporated. Over 90 brewerieswould open from that time up until1920 when Prohibition came into effect.

Only 2 local breweries survived the 13years of prohibition and in 1933 the nowfamous Koehler Beer came to Erie onceagain through The Erie Brewing Company.Pressure from the large national brewerieswould eventually cause them to close in1978, leaving the region without a breweryfor decades. Today, with the resurgenceof craft beer, our local beer scene isonce again alive and well!

Now the region has fifeteen. We suggestyou take a tour and ask to shake handswith the owners/brewers, they’rereshaping the brewing scene in thegreat Northwest Pennsylvania region.
