STEM

Welcome back to another exciting year in the Science Faculty. I have returned as HT Science this year Monday to Thursday and Mr McKay will still be HT Science on a Friday.

I would like to welcome some new staff this year, Miss Simpson, Miss Sweetman (pictured), and Mrs Kohlhardt (Friday). It has been an extremely busy start to the year and we are very excited for what the year has in store for us.

STEM is up and running again for 2019 and students are planning their rockets in Year 10. This unit will build on the Motion unit being studied in Science in Term 1. To ensure that students can get building their rockets as soon as possible, we are asking that students bring a 2L bottle to school to use for their rockets. If you have any at home you can donate this would be a massive help. Year 9 STEM classes are completing topics on a rotational basis this year and are in the full swing of designing and problem solving for their allocated STEM project. Marine and Aquaponics is up and running again in Year 10 and Miss Simpson is excited to be reviving and teaching this course. Just a reminder for all students to ensure you are prepared for class with pens, pencils, rulers, scissors, glue and a book for Science lessons. Also, as Science is a practical class, please ensure you have appropriate, leather or leather-like, enclosed footwear. Our Year 11 and 12 students are now well into their studies and are working hard. Remember, if you have any concerns or issues, please see your teacher or myself as soon as possible. This will ensure you stay on top of things and don’t get overwhelmed with your studies. All Year 7-10 students have been issued with a document outlining Science Faculty expectations, Scope and Sequences, Assessment Schedules for Science and teacher contact emails. Please ask your child for this document if they haven’t already shown you. It is important that students and parents/carers are informed about what is occurring in Science and we are more than happy to discuss any issue or questions you may have regarding your child. One final thing, Year 10 students will be going on an excursion to Luna Park this term, stay tuned for more information. The Burners will also be back this year for our Primary School students. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for updates. Mrs C Cohen Head Teacher Science/STEM

On Wednesday 6 February, Kanahooka High School ventured into new territory for its annual Swimming Carnival. Around 300 students travelled to Port Kembla Pool and beach to enjoy our swimming carnival program followed by an afternoon of enrichment activities on the beach. And what a day we had! A beautiful venue, view and magnificent weather. Our swimming program kicked off at 8.45am with Individual Medley Events for our elite swimmers and concluded with an entertaining "Hawaiian" themed Year 12 race at what was their final school swimming carnival - what fantastic memories you all made! All non-competitive swimmers were allowed some time in the pool moving down the lanes and cooling off after time in the hot sun. The enthusiasm of students was impressive and their behaviour was exemplary with lifeguards at the pool complementing them on numerous occasions, and welcoming us to return for next year’s carnival. Well done students! We then ventured down onto the beach for students to enjoy a range of activities including beach soccer and touch, beach volleyball and Mr Nunn's famous "Challenge Activities". By all reports, a great day was had by all and we look forward to even more KHS students joining us next year. A big thank you to all of our wonderful staff who acted as officials and supervisors and then co-ordinated and participated in a variety of activities with students on the beach. Also a thank you to all the parents and carers who came to support the students and to student helpers whose wonderful efforts ensured the smooth and efficient running of our swimming program - your efforts were very much appreciated. Congratulations to our age champions who are listed below and will be recognised on Sport's Assembly in

the near future for their efforts.

Indigenous Australian Engineering School

Congratulations to Ella S from Year 11 for her participation in the Indigenous Australian Engineering School, (IAES), held in Sydney during the Summer holidays.

Ella was one of around 25 students, from all over Australia, to participate in this program. The aim of the program is to provide a forum for students to meet engineering role models and gain insights into the opportunities engineering can provide as a career.

During the week-long IAES, Ella had the opportunity to meet engineers, participate in design work and other hands-on activities, testing her newly acquired engineering skills, and visit engineering projects.

Congratulations Ella, for representing our school with enthusiasm, and thank you to Engineering Aid Australia and the sponsors for making this camp available to young Indigenous future leaders.

For more information about the program go to https://www.engineeringaid.org/

If you are interested in applying for the 2020 camp, applications will open in June/July.

New to Kanahooka High School this year is the Clontarf Foundation.

The Clontarf Foundation exists to improve the education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and by doing so equips them to participate meaningfully in society.

We do this by offering incentives at school to make it more attractive, and having an academy room that is open every morning, recess and lunch with a fully equipped kitchen.

We are in the early stages of opening, so Clontarf staff will aim to be making a presence in the school and introducing themselves to students and families. The Clontarf room is located in the Administration 500 block, in what used to be the Planning room. Looking forward to working here at KHS. Mr M Montague Director Kanahooka Academy

TECHNOLOGY

BYOD We’ve had a few parents ask recently about students BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) for birthdays and such. So I have put together a small list of suggestions to consider: Storage – Solid State hard drive. In short they are a flash memory hard drive instead of a mechanical hard drive, no moving parts, so they are much faster than a conventional hard drive. Battery – 2 hours battery life used to be as much as you’d expect, however, these days some manufacturers claim to have 20 hours of battery life. I would aim for 10 hours battery life as there is a good chance that it will last long enough for a school day, even after it starts to lose its charge life.

Memory – 8GB is the minimum recommended for new computers these days, you’ll be able to have more programs open and do more things. Size – A medium sized laptop 13-15 inch screen is probably the best option as larger laptops can be quite heavy, and smaller ones may strain the eyes. Go with what is good for your student. Durability – A durable laptop is a must, common things that break are screens, hinges, and keyboards. I usually find that you can tell by testing the laptop out in store to see how durable it feels. If you buy a really cheap flimsy laptop don’t expect it to last 4 years.

Windows – Most Windows based laptops come with Windows 10 these days, there are of course different options like Mac OS and Chrome OS. Though I personally recommend Windows devices. Students do bring Mac based devices and they work fine though some settings, but may need to be setup by the school for internet access.

Chrome Books can be a little more difficult, and school printers can be difficult to configure, if at all. Where to buy? – There lots of local stores you can buy a laptop from; Harvey Norman, Joyce Mayne, Domayne, Good Guys, and JB Hi-Fi just in Warrawong. Buy from a retailer you feel comfortable buying from and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t forget Microsoft Office is free for students (on Windows and Mac). All you need to do is login to your student portal, click on learning, Office 365 and click on install (see me for help if you need it). Mr B Harding Technology
