given by the Poison Center.6. Most exposures can be handled

over the phone. If an ambulance or transport to the hospital is required you will be told that by the Poison Center.

Syrup of Ipecac• For some poisonings, the Center or your doctor will tell you to make the poisoned person vomit.

• Syrup of Ipecac is the only safe way to cause vomiting in poisoning emer-gencies.

• Always contact the Center before using Syrup of Ipecac and, as with all potentailly harmful sub-stances, be sure to store Syrup of Ipecac out of the reach of children.

• Parents, grandparents, and other care providers should keep a bottle of Syrup of Ipecac on hand for each child under 6 in the home.

A series of tank-battery explo-sions at a Devon gas-well site late Friday morning startled neighbors and sent two men to the hospital with burns.

Welders were working at the site on Hlavek Road, a few miles west of Decatur0, when the explosions oc-curred.

“All I know is they were welding a separator, and there was an explo-sion,” said Wise County Fire Mar-shal Marc Dodd, who is investigat-ing the incident.

One of the welders was blown off a ladder. He suffered several fi rst-de-gree burns and was fl own to Park-land Hospital in Dallas.

“The concussion of the explosion knocked him off the ladder,” said Lt. Art Ferguson with the Wise County

System in Decatur.The explosions blasted one tank

battery 10 yards. The lids blew offtwo others. One lid landed, dentedand battered, 50 yards away by ashallow pond.

By the time fi refi ghters arrived,fl ames roared from the top of onethe tanks like an Olympic torch.Obsidian-colored smoke belchedacross the cow pasture surround-ing the well site. The pungent scentof burning petroleum by-productsmixed with the smell of manure.

“I was sitting at home using thecomputer, and the whole houseshook, the windows rattled andthe door blew open,” said DanielleScroggins, who lives within eyesightof the well. “It was so loud.”

The Newark City Council is considering imple-mentation of an amendment to its curfew ordi-nance that would establish a daytime curfew for juveniles.

If adopted, the new law would not allow those under 17 outside on school days between 9 a.m. and either 2 or 3 p.m. Exceptions would be al-lowed for doctor and dental appointments, home-schooled students, those emancipated by mar-riage, etc.

The purpose is to deter truancy and daytime burglaries and vandalism, said Newark Police Chief Terry Fiene.

“Most moms and dads both work, leaving neigh-borhoods completely empty,” Fiene said. “If kids are free to roam, burglaries come up.

“We don’t have a problem with this type of be-havior now, but it’s good to put this in place now as the city grows.”

“I did some research and looked at the typi-cal daytime curfew hours,” said council member Chana Massey. “They usually don’t allow kids out from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.”

The city attorney will review the proposal be-fore the council meets in April.

If the council chooses to adopt the daytime cur-few, it will be attached to its current curfew law, ordinance A-311. At Thursday’s city council meet-ing, the council voted unanimously to renew the ordinance. The ordinance must be renewed every three years. It expired in late 2009.

The present ordinance makes it illegal for ju-veniles to be out from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Fri-day and Saturday.

WISE COUNTY

The 58th annual Wise County Youth Fair begins Monday at the Wise County Sheriff ’s Posse Grounds in Decatur.

The horse show will be-gin at 8:30 a.m. at the NRS Training Arena south of De-catur.

The queen’s contest is 7 p.m. Monday at the Deca-tur Civic Center. Queens representing 4-H, FCCLA and FFA will be crowned. Admission is $3 for adults and students, and children under school-age are free.

Tuesday’s events include breeding livestock shows.
