About the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara:

The Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda was established by the Government of Bihar in

the year 1951 with the object, inter alia, to “promote advance studies and research of high

standard in Buddhist learning, and to publish works of permanent value to scholars” and

named it as Magadha Institute of Post-Graduate Studies and Research in Pali and Allied

Languages and Buddhist Learning. It was the cherished dream of His Excellency Dr. Rajendra

Prasad, the first President of the Republic of India that the legacy of the ancient Nalanda

Mahavihara should be carry forward and accordingly he declared that „the ancient seat of

Buddhist learning at Nalanda would be revived in order to revive the lost glory and the heritage

of ancient Nalanda Mahavihara‟. It was His Excellency, Dr. Rajendra Prasad who laid the

foundation stone of the first building of the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara on 20th

November, 1951.

The words engraved upon it in verse form in Pali language are:

Asm eva silāsiṁgṁā Nālandā bhānuraṁsio,

Udentu lokabhāsāya vigame mārarattiyā.

Let the rays of the sun of Nalanda rise from the summit of this rock in order to

brighten the vernacular (lokabhāsā in Pali) after the passing away of its nights

of darkness (period of its obscurity).

In due course of time the rechristening of this Institute was done after an inscribed seal

which records: “Srī Nālandā-mahāvihāriyāryabhikṣu-saṅghasya”, „Seal of the Community of

Venerable Monks of the Great Monastry at Nalanda‟ was discovered from the excavated site of

the ancient Nalanda University. The adjective „Nava‟ or „new‟ in the name of the ancient

Nalanda Mahavihara was added by its founders which not only signifies the resurrection of

ancient Nalanda University but also signifies the revival and reorientation of the academic

tradition of the ancient Buddhist Mahavihara on modern scientific lines. It is also pertinent to

mention here that the seal adopted for the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara is almost modelled after the

seal of ancient Nalanda University with the Dharmacakra flanked by two deers dates back to 8th

/9th

Century AD during the Pala period and had been found during the excavation of the ruins of

the ancient Nalanda Mahavihara.

Being primarily a research Institute, the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara is laying special

emphasis on the research and publication projects from the day of its very inception. The

research projects undertaken by the Mahavihara are of two types - Short-term Projects and Long-

term Projects. Guiding the scholars for the award of the doctoral degree, publication of research

volumes and monographs by members of the staff and research scholars come under Short-term

Projects. The publication of the Pali texts not yet published in Devanāgari script such as the

entire Pali Tipiṭaka, Aṭṭhakathā (Commentaries) on the Pali Tipiṭaka, Pali Ṭikā(s) and

Anuṭīkā(s) on them and other Pali texts, the work of compilation of the Pali-Hindi Dictionary

and authentic Hindi translation of the entire Pali Tipiṭaka, critical decipherment and publication

of MSS and their Cataloguing are a few works envisaged under Long-term Projects by the Nava

Nalanda Mahavihara. Total 41 Volumes of Pali-Tripitaka in Devanagari script is now available

in the Publication Counter of NNM, Nalanda.

During the first ten years of its establishment, it has been successful in publishing the

whole set of Pali Tipiṭaka for the first time in Devanāgari script under the able guidance of late

Bhikkhu Jagadisa Kassapa, an erudite scholar of Pali & Buddhist Studies and the founder

Director of the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda in forty one elegant volumes which was

warmly received by the reputed scholars of the world. It is pertinent to mention here that prior to

its publication by the NNM, complete set of the Pali Tipiṭaka had already been published in

various scripts like, Burmese, Singhalese, Siamese, Roman etc. The methodology adopted to edit

and publish the Pali Tipiṭaka in Devanāgari Script by the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara has become

a role model for editing the text of Pali language throughout the world. The publication work of

the post-canonical literature such as Aṭṭhakathā, Ṭikā and Anuṭīkā etc. in Devanāgari script is

also in progress. So far 25 volumes of the Aṭṭhakathā literature have already been published. It is

also pertinent to mention here that before its publication by the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara the

complete set of Pali Tipiṭaka in any Indian script was not extant in India. Besides other

publications, mention may be made of seven research volumes containing monographs on

different aspects of Buddhist Philosophy, Logic, History and Culture which have been published

by the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara.

At the time of the establishment of the Nava Nalanda Mahaviahra, there were very few

Indian universities which were having the departments/centers, though in nascent stage, which

were facilitating studies and researches in Pali language and literature. The study of Pali

language & literature was not at all popular among the Indians as the people were not known to

its rich heritage. The study materials in any modern Indian language were very scant at the

disposal of teachers and taught. Therefore, during its initial days of establishment, the Nava

Nalanda Mahavihara not only took the responsibility of imparting teaching and conducting

researches in Pali language & literature but also started the publication work of Pali texts for

making them available to the general readers as well as the scholars. Thus the credit to

popularize the study of Pali language and literature in India undoubtedly goes to the Nava

Nalanda Mahavihara.

Thus it could be surmised that the academic activities of the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara

includes: (a) teaching and research, (b) organizing seminars/conferences/ workshops (c)

Publications and (d) creating a well-equipped library of oriental learning. Besides the above

mentioned academic work, time to time the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara holds special

convocations to award of the degree of Vidya Varidhi (D. Litt.), honoris causa to those

personalities who have made indelible mark in the field Pali and Buddhist Studies as well as in

allied subjects. The story of institution of conferment of the degree of Vidya Varidhi is quite

interesting. It was started on the behest of Government of India in the year 1966 when the crown

prince of Laos His Highness Sri Vong Savong had visited India and had expressed his desire to

get the degree of Nalanda. It was at special request from the Government of India that the NNM

held the convocation and conferred the degree of Vidya Varidhi (D. Lit.) Honoris Causa on him.

This had a very great impact on the Buddhist countries towards the regeneration of

cultural kinship between India and the countries of the East, South and South East Asia. Till date

fourteen such special convocations have been organized and the list includes eminent

personalities from India and abroad.

Thus the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara is a unique institution unparallel in India which has

been established to carry forward the legacy of the ancient University of Nalanda established in

Century AD. This Institution which lies close to the ruins of ancient Nalanda University

draws its inspiration from it and was established to develop as a centre of higher studies in Pali

and Buddhism on the lines of ancient Nalanda Mahavihara offers various courses at Master‟s

level and conduct researches of high standards. The scope of research and publications include

Pali language and literature, Sanskrit Buddhist texts, Tibetan texts, Buddhist philosophy,

cultural, social and religious history of Buddhist countries of Southeast Asia and other topics

related to Buddhism.

The idea of Nava Nalanda Mahavihara lies in the preservation and protection of the

religious and cultural heritage of India for the posterity. Pali language was the lingua franca of

the people during the time of the Buddha. The extant Pali Tipitaka is believed to be the earliest

and the most authentic collection of the teaching of Lord Buddha. The Tipitaka and its ancillary

literatures are not only the repository of Buddha‟s teachings but also contain the philosophical,

religious, geographical, social, political economic information of India during the time of the

Buddha. They are the basic literary sources for the study of the cultural history of ancient India.

Keeping in view the deep veneration for the place from all corners of the Buddhist world

and also to provide impetus in all-round development of the Nava Nalanda Mahvihara, in the

year 1994, the Dept. of Culture, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, New

Delhi, took over the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara under the control as an autonomous institute. In

the year 2006, The Ministry of Human Resource Development (Development of Higher

Education) Govt. of India on the advice of the UGC declared the NNM, Nalanda, Bihar as a

Deemed to be University. Since then the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara is functioning as a Deemed

to be University under the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, New Delhi.

The Nava Nalanda Mahavihara aims to equip students with character, ability, skill,

cultural orientation and consciousness desirable for the human conduct. Thus the idea is not

limited to facilitate and promote only critical intellectual engagement like other streams of

learning. But the idea of Mahavihara is to have critical engagement with different traditions of

thought and its great variety of expression, modes of understanding, human condition and

predicament and the incredibly diverse inanimate and non-human living world by value-based

education and practice in a holistic perspective.

Aims and objectives of the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara:

The Nava Nalanda Mahaivhara, Nalanda Society shall undertake Under Graduate, Post

Graduate and Doctoral Programmes in Pali, Buddhist Studies, and languages and Linguistics.

The Objectives for which the Society is established are:

1. to develop a residential centre of education of international importance on the line of the

ancient Nalanda Mahavihara (where the teachers and the taught lived together devoting

themselves to studies and higher academic pursuits) for the promotion of higher studies

and research in Pali language and literature, and Buddhist studies through Sanskrit,

Tibetan, Chinese, Mongolian, Japanese and other Asian languages. In Addition,

contemporary Buddhism in various parts of the world may also be made subjects of

studies and research;

2. to set up and maintain departments of studies in (1) Pali and Buddhism, (2) Philosophy

with special reference to Buddhist Philosophy (both Hinayana and Mahayana), Logic and

Epistemology including outlines of Indian Philosophy and Comparative Religion, (3)

Ancient Indian and Asian Studies with special reference to Buddhist history and culture

and spread of Buddhism, (4) Linguistics and Modern Languages, (5) the Department of

Tibetan and Chinese Studies including Mongolian, Korean and Japanese languages, and

(6) such other subjects as the “Society” may decide to introduce from time to time;

3. to undertake extra mural studies, extension programmes and field outreach activities for

development of the Indian Society;

4. to accommodate monks, nuns and lay scholars versed in traditional Buddhists monastic

learning and to acquaint them with modern methods of research and comparative studies;

5. to send its scholars and professors to recognized centres of Buddhist learning in the

world, specially to neighboring Buddhist countries to acquire first-hand knowledge of

their traditions and also to revive the old cultural ties existed between India and those

countries and vice versa;

6. to critically edit, translate and publish classical Buddhist works from Pali, Sanskrit,

Tibetan, Chinese, Japanese, Mongolian and other languages;

7. to publish journals, periodicals on different aspects of Buddhism and allied subjects;

8. to co-operate with educational and other institutions in and outside India having objects

wholly or partly similar to those of the Society by exchange of teachers, scholars in order

to coordinate research work with them and generally in such a manner as may be

conducive to their common objects;

9. to subscribe to or become a member of, or to co-operate with any other Associations or

Society, whose objects are similar, wholly or partly, to the objects of the Society or the

promotion of which may be conducive to the attainment of the objects of the Society;

10. to do all such other acts and things as may be necessary or desirable for or conducive to

attain or furthering the objectives specified above as may be expedient for functioning of

the Mahavihara.

Departments:

At present, there are 9 departments in the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, namely:

(i) Department of Pali

(ii) Department of Philosophy

(iii) Department of Ancient History Culture and Archaeology

(iv) Department of Sanskrit

(v) Department of English

(vi) Department of Hindi

(vii) Department of Chinese and Japanese

(viii) Department of Tibetan Studies

(ix) Department of Buddhist Studies

Getting to Nalanda:

Nalanda is 90 kms from Patna by road, Private and State Transport buses leave for

Biharsharif (District Headquarter of Nalanda) and at every ten minutes. Buses, Tempos and taxis

are available from Biharsharif to Nalanda. There is one direct train from New Delhi to Nalanda,

12391/12392 Shramjeevi Express. Many other trains come to Patna from New Delhi, Mumbai,

Kolkata, Chennai etc. Patna is also connected by air. The Mahavihara is at the distance of 3 kms

from the Nalanda Railway Station and 2 kms from the Nalanda Bus Station.

a) B.A. (Hons.) in Pali, M.A. in Pali, Sanskrit, English, Hindi and Tibetan Studies from 10.00 a.m.

to 1.00 p.m. : 01.08.2020.

b) M.A. in Philosophy from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m.: 05.08.2020

c) M.A. in Ancient History, Culture & Archaeology from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 noon: 07.08.2020

Announcement for conducting the Entrance Tests/Proficiency Tests for admissions to all

Courses are duly published on NNM website and in leading Newspapers.

Courses offered by the Mahavihara:

M. A. Courses in Pali, Philosophy, Ancient History, Culture and Archaeology, Buddhist Studies,

Sanskrit, Hindi, English, Tibetan Studies:

The course of study leading to M.A. Degree in the Faculty of Arts of the NNM shall be

conducted in the NNM and shall be of two years duration (4 semesters).

A student of M.A. Degree course shall not be admitted concurrently to any other full time

course of the NNM unless otherwise provided for by the Ordinances hereinafter.

To qualify for the admission in M.A. the candidate must:

(a) Satisfy the minimum requirements for entrance prescribed hereinafter for M.A.

courses;

(b) Attend 100% classes covering course of lectures/seminars/ tutorials/sessional

work to the satisfaction of the NNM; and

(c) Pass prescribed examinations for admission in Master of Arts.

Admission to M.A. Degree Course:

Admission to M.A. Degree Courses of studies shall be made on the basis of merit in the

Postgraduate Entrance Test/Proficiency Test.

Any candidate cannot, however, claim admission as a matter of right. The admission or

re-admission of a candidate shall be strictly at the discretion of the Admission Committee, which

may refuse to admit any student without assigning any reason thereof.

There is no provision of re-admission to entry classes, i.e. 1st Semester of M.A. Degree

course. However, if a student is dropped from the respective course of study because of his/her

failure to clear a particular course, he/she may apply for re-admission in the same course of study

in the 1st semester of the next academic session along with the fresh application.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

A candidate shall be eligible for appearing in the Post Graduate Entrance Test who has

passed 10+2+3 Degree Course, any discipline and any discipline of M.A. or equivalent

in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate from any University in

India or from abroad.

Number of Seats:

Not more than 40 candidates shall be admitted in each course, provided they qualify as

per NNM rules.

B.A. Hons. Course in Pali:

The course of study leading to the B.A. (Hons.) in Pali Degree in the Faculty of Arts of the

NNM shall be conducted in the NNM and shall be of three years duration (6 semesters).

A student of B.A. (Hons.) in Pali Degree course shall not be admitted concurrently to any

other full time course of the NNM unless otherwise provided for by the Ordinances

hereinafter.

To qualify for the award of the degree of B.A. (Hons.) in Pali the candidate must:

(a) Satisfy the minimum requirements for entrance prescribed hereinafter for B.A.

(Hons.) in Pali course;

(b) Attend 100% classes covering course of lectures/seminars/ tutorials/sessional work

to the satisfaction of the NNM; and

(c) Pass prescribed examinations for the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Pali.

Admission Procedure:

Admission in B.A. (Hons.) Semester I programme of study shall be made on merit in the

Under-gradate Entrance Test (UET)/Proficiency Test.

Admission shall be made by the Admission Committee in accordance with relevant

ordinances and the rules framed by the NNM from time to time.

Admission cannot, however, be claimed by any candidate as a matter of right. The

admission or re-admission of a candidate shall be entirely at the discretion of the Admission

Committee, NNM.

On his/her selection for admission to the B.A. (Hons.) Semester I programme, the

candidate shall, within the time fixed by the Admission Department, deposit the fees prescribed

for the programme. If the candidate fails to deposit fees within the stipulated time, his/her

selection shall automatically stand cancelled. Such a candidate shall not be admitted to the

concerned programme unless a fresh order of selection or extension of date for payment of fees

is issued by the Admission Department, NNM.

There is no provision of re-admission to entry classes, i.e. 1st Semester of B.A. (Hons.)

Degree course. However, if a student is dropped from the respective course of study because of

his/her failure to clear a particular course, he/she may apply for re-admission in the same course

of study in the 1st semester of the next academic session along with the fresh applicants.

(U.E.T.)/Proficiency Test leading to admission to B.A. (Hons.) in Pali Degree Course, Semester

Not more than 40 candidates shall be admitted in the course, provided they qualify as per

NNM rules.

Diploma Course in Pali, Chinese and Tibetan Studies:

Eligibility:

The admission for Diploma courses in Pali, Tibetan Studies, and Chinese shall be open to

a person who has passed Certificate Course in concerned subject from NNM or any recognized

University/Institution recognized by the NNM as equivalent thereto. Employees and graduates of

all the branches, post-graduate students may also take admission in this course.

Notwithstanding anything contained in any other ordinance, a person may pursue studies

for the course, and take the examination thereof, simultaneously with the studies for any other

course of the NNM.

Admission Procedure:

Application will be invited from interested candidates through advertisement/

Announcement, published in leading newspapers of the region. The applicants seeking admission

to this course will be required to undergo through Personal Interview.

A merit list will be preparing on the basis of marks obtained in Certificate course in

concerned subject.

Not more than 40 candidates shall be admitted in each course, provided they qualify as

per NNM rules.

Medium of instruction:

The medium of instruction and examination shall be the language concerned or

Hindi/English.

Certificate Courses in Pali, Chinese and Tibetan Studies:

Eligibility:

The admission for Certificate courses in Pali, Tibetan Studies and Chinese shall be open to a

person who has passed at least 10+2 examination with 50% marks in aggregate of the Bihar

School Examination Board, Patna or an examination recognized by the NNM as equivalent

thereto. Employees and graduates of all the branches, post-graduate students may also take

admission in this course.

1. Provided further that a person registered for Ph.D. course may pursue studies for the

course only if he is permitted by the Director/Vice-Chancellor as per provision of the

Ph.D. Ordinance.

2. Notwithstanding anything contained in any other ordinance, a person may pursue studies

for the course, and take the examination thereof, simultaneously with the studies for any

other course of the NNM.

Admission Procedure:

1. Application will be invited from interested candidates through advertisement/

Announcement, published in leading newspapers of the region. The applicants seeking

admission to this course will be required to undergo through Personal Interview.

2. A merit list will be preparing on the basis of marks obtained in Personal interview.

Number of Seats in each Course:

Not more than 40 candidates shall be admitted in each course, provided they qualify as

per NNM rules. Those employed should forward their application through proper channel and

should produce the relieving/no objection certificate at the time of admission.

Medium of instruction:

The medium of instruction and examination shall be the language concerned or

Hindi/English.

Reservation/Weightage:

15% Seats shall be reserved for Scheduled Caste, 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe and 27% for

Other Backward Class candidates. Admission against these seats shall be made provided the

candidate has passed the qualifying examination and appeared in the Entrance Test. The vacant

seats reserved for SC/ST/OBC candidates, if any, shall be filled by the candidates under general

categories on merit basis.

10% supernumerary seats shall be reserved for the sons/daughters of permanent

employees (including those on probation) of the NNM currently in service or were in service

during the academic session immediately preceding the one (session) for which the Entrance

Test is held, provided the candidate fulfils the minimum eligibility requirements and qualifies in

the Postgraduate Entrance Test/Proficiency Test. NNM employees‟ sons/daughter‟s category

applicants shall be required to submit the certificate of the employee ward only in the prescribed

format duly signed and issued by the Registrar if called for admission.

3% seats, on horizontal reservation basis, shall be reserved for PC (Physically

Challenged) candidates (visually impaired 1% + hearing impaired 1% + orthopedically

by the Civil Surgeon at the time of submitting the application. Candidates who claim for PC

category shall be considered under this category on an approval from the NNM Medical Officer

only at the time of admission.

Admission under sports Seats shall be done as per the NNM rules.

15% seats will be reserved for Girls candidate in each category. However, if Girl seats

remain vacant, the seats may be filled by male candidates under concerned category on merit

basis.

Economically Weaker Section 10 % seats will be reserved for economically weaker

section (E.W.S.).

Admission of Foreign Nationals:

Applications of foreign nationals nominated by the Government of India under

scholarship scheme and self-financing foreign nationals shall be entertained for the aforesaid

courses. They shall not be subject to the Under-graduate Entrance Test/Proficiency Test provided

they have passed the equivalent qualifying examination from a foreign University/Institution.

If a Foreign national has passed the equivalent qualifying examination from an Indian

University/Institution he/she shall have to qualify the Entrance Test.

The seats for foreign students/foreign nationals, Peoples of Indian Origin shall be filled in

as Supernumerary Seats (i.e., over and above the sanction intake capacity) up to 15% of the total

approved intake capacity as per merit on the basis of guidelines/criteria laid down by the

UGC/AICTE/Government of India, as the case may be.

A provision to the extent of 15 % supernumerary seats for Foreign Nationals shall be

made for admission to each of the various aforementioned courses available in the NNM

provided they fulfill the following conditions:

(i) That they fulfill the minimum eligibility requirements.

(ii) That the applications of scholarship holding Foreign national (under various schemes) are

routed through Indian Council for Cultural Relations/Ministry of Human Resource

Development (Department of Education), Govt. of India.

(iii) That they have valid residential permit/visa for the prescribed duration of the concerned

course.

(iv) That the antecedents of the candidate have been verified by the forwarding

Agencies/Ministry and found in order.

(v) That they have adequate knowledge of English and/or Hindi as per requirements of the

course.

(vi) That the degree/certificates of the candidates have been approved by the Association of

Indian University (AIU)/Commonwealth University/International Association of

Universities (IAU) as equivalent to the corresponding degrees/certificate of the AIU.

In addition to the normal charges, a foreign national shall also pay the prescribed tuition

and other University fees (which may differ from course to course) at the time of

admission. Such fees, thus fixed for and to be realized from the Government nominated

and self-financing candidates shall be paid in US Dollar (US$) or Indian currency shall

be decided by the NNM from time to time.

Since candidates under supernumerary quota shall be from different foreign nationals, the

inter-se merit as decided by the Admission Committee of the NNM shall be deemed as

final.

Only the degree/certificates recognized by AIU shall be deemed as equivalent degree.

Library:

The library is housed in a two-story building known as the Deshratna Dr. Rajendra

Prasad Central Library, which contains sixteen research cubicles with two large rooms on either side.

Presently, the library includes over 52,500 books, important journals and a rare manuscript

collection. To develop the library Mahavihara received the personal collections and donations

from the Late Ras Bihari Mukherjee, from Hoogly, West Bengal; Prof. (Dr.) Nalinaksh Datta,

former University Professor and Head of the Department of Pali, University of Calcutta; and Prof.

(Dr.) K. Venkat Ramanan, Director, Cheena Bhavan, Santiniketan, West Bengal and Prof.

Nathmal Tatia, former Director, Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda. Dr. C.S. Upask, former

Director Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda, NNM Director Prof. Deepak Barua from Kolkata

and Prof. Krishna Narayan Prasad 'Maghadha' former Head Dept. of Hindi, Guwahati University.

Books comprising the Wheaton Loan Collection given by the U.S. Government are also an

important donation, consisting of valuable dictionaries, encyclopedias, journals and other

reference books. A good collection of books on modern thought, including books on psychology,

metaphysics, ethics, logic, sociology, and cultural anthropology are also available in the library.

Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Kampuchia (Cambodia), Japan and South Korea

donated complete sets of the Tipitaka published in their respective scripts, and other miscellaneous

works to the Mahavihara. A complete set of the Chinese Tripitaka and other miscellaneous works

presented by the Peoples' Republic of China, a complete set of Kanjur and Tanjur donated by His

Holiness the Dalai Lama, a complete set of the Tibetan Tripitaka (Peking edition) with its

catalogue, Derge and Lhasa editions of Kanjur and Derge as well as s-Nar-thang editions of Tanjur

are also invaluable treasures in the library of the Mahavihara. Bearing in mind the current trends in

research, the library of the Mahavihara subscribes research journals and periodicals related to

Indology, Buddhist learning and others.

Facilities:

Hostel:

At present the Mahavihara has three hostels. Out of these two Hostels are allotted for monk

students and the third one is for Research scholars. Preference is given to foreign students.

In view of the limited hostel accommodation, the candidates should clearly understand that the

grant of admission to a full-time programmes of study in the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara would

not ensure allotment of hostel accommodation. Students admitted to part-time programmes of

study (Certificate & Diploma courses) are not eligible for hostel accommodation. However, the

applications of those students who directly join Certificate & Diploma courses may be

considered for Hostel accommodation. No request for out of turn allotment of hostel even on

medical ground will be entertained.

All the admitted students who need hostel accommodation will be required to apply in the

prescribed application form obtainable from the Office of the Dean Students Welfare (DSW).

Admission in the hostel will be in accordance with the merit secured in the Post Graduate

Entrance Test/Proficiency Test held by the NNM in the respective programmes of study or on

the basis of the merit list prepared on the basis of the qualifying examination of the respective

course to which the students have been admitted.

Reservation in hostel accommodation would be provided as per Central Government

norms.

Cafeteria:

The Mahavihara provides well-maintained cafeteria with hygienic environment.

Computer Lab:

The largest computer lab in the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara with fully Air-Conditioned

with the latest technological devices.

Both indoor and outdoor sports are integral part of the University curriculum. Facilities are

Elocution and Debate:

As per the tradition of ancient Nalanda Mahavihara encouragement is given to the

students to develop the ability of oration and debate. Regular elocution contests are organized to in

the Mahavihara.

Prohibition of and Punishments for Ragging:

1. Ragging in any form is strictly prohibited within the premises of the Nava Nalanda

Mahavihara, Nalanda.

2. Any individual or collective act or practice of ragging constitutes gross indiscipline and shall

be dealt with under the UGC Regulations on Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher

Educational Institutions, 2009.

Getting to Nava Nalanda Mahavihara (NNM), Nalanda

The present campus of the Mahavihara is situated on the southern bank of the

historical lake, Indrapushkarni. Close to the northern bank of the lake lie the ruins of

the ancient Nalanda Mahavihara.

Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda (NNM) is some 100 kms from Patna by road,

Private and State Transport buses leave for Bihar Sharif every five minutes and pass

through Nalanda on the way to Gaya. Tempos and taxis are available from Bihar Sharif.

Nalanda is also 75 kms from Gaya by road. There is one train from New Delhi-Nalanda,

12391/12392 Shramajeevi Express. Many others trains come to Patna. The Nava

Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda (NNM) is 03kms from the Nalanda Railways Station.
