FUTURE GOALS AND CAREER PLANNING

Our students have been exposed to an array of informationthis term to assist them in future planning to achieve theirpersonal goals and select relevant courses of study. The verysuccessful Proserpine State High School Careers Expo set theplatform for students to explore possible future pathways andthe educational programs required to be successful into thefuture.

Students have also engaged in faculty presentations,information sessions from James Cook University, whilst agroup of students participated in the Airforce Flight Simulatorand accompanying discussions led by defence force personnel.

Assisting students with their future pathways is a key priority ofthe school and we are fortunate to have such experienced staffto lead the way for our students.

YEAR 9 SUCCESS INTO SENIOR AND YEAR 10SET PLANNING - PARENT MEETINGS

Two very important days being coordinated by our school forYear 9 and Year 10 students is fast approaching. For thefirst time the school is facilitating student and parent/caregivermeetings to discuss the transition from junior school to seniorschool for our Year 9 students. With the implementation ofthe new senior curriculum in 2019 it is more than ever crucialthat decisions regarding subject choice be accurate during thecourse of Year 10. Gaining a foundation in Year 10 will assistin selecting more informed subjects in Year 11 and increasesuccess.

Year 10 SET Planning meetings will also take place on Friday31 August, providing an early point of communication betweenstudents, parents/caregivers and the school to assist with theselection of successful pathways in Year 11 and Year 12. Thisis also an opportunity to explore additional options offeredthrough our extensive senior program such as external courses,TAFE and School based Traineeships and Apprenticeships.

ATTENDANCE

I promote regularly to our school community the importance ofattendance and the strategies that encourage students to bereflective against our school target of 95% attendance for everystudent. The target of 95% attendance equates to 2.5 daysabsent a term or 5 days absent a semester or 10 days absentin the school year.

Our school recognised some high achieving care groups lastweek who worked hard to win the Care Group Challenge forTerm 2, improving their overall attendance. Students enjoyed aBBQ lunch cooked especially for them and set their focus ontaking out the next challenge.

InspireU - LAW

InspireU - Law is a camp provided specifically for Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander students, male and female, in Year 11 and12 in 2018 that have an interest in studying law.

The camp is co-ordinated by staff from the Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander Studies Unit (ATSIS Unit) at The Universityof Queensland (UQ), St Lucia campus over five (5) days.

Students will participate in:

Students take part in a range of activities designed to providea practical insight into law and the many opportunities for studyand careers in this industry.

Accommodation is supervised, with separate accommodationfor female and male students.

BUSINESS AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIESDEPARTMENT

NAO Robot Visit

For the last four weeks PSHS has had the opportunity towork with a cutting edge robot commonly known as NAO.With a price tag on par with a new hatch back, NAO has anabundance of features that we were able to explore.

The chance to work with the robot was offered to all studentswho were interested, with lunch time workshops runningmultiple times over the last few weeks. A small handful ofstudents were interested with only one eager student attendingevery workshop; Tim Cauchi.

Tim started off with no knowledge of NAO or the softwarethat was used to program it, but that didn’t deter him in theslightest. By the time NAO had to leave us Tim was able tohave NAO respond to touch control, speech recognition andeven program custom made actions. It was very good to seesomeone with such a passion to understand this continuallyadvancing technology and I hope other students take up thisexcellent opportunity in years to come.

HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

Year 11 and 12 Social and Community Studies students arecurrently studying Tropical Cyclone Debbie and how particularorganisations assisted the local community before, during andafter the disaster. They have been lucky enough to recentlyhave some guest speakers come to the school to speak tothem. Mark Connors, from the local State Emergency Service,spoke to the students about the role SES had during thecyclone, Colleen Hill spoke about her experiences duringCyclone Ada compared to Cyclone Debbie, and Tim Farran,from the Proserpine Police Station, spoke about what the policedo to keep the community safe in a natural disaster.

Proserpine River Excursion

Year 12 Chemistry students have just completed a field trip tocollect some mangrove mud samples that they will experimenton throughout Term 3. Local soil scientist, Scott Hardy wasable to assist the students with the help from the WhitsundayRegional Council to gather soil samples from the ProserpineRiver. The soil that they are testing is quite dangerous andhas the potential to become very acidic. In some cases thismangrove mud, once disturbed, over a couple of weeks canhave a pH lower than battery acid found in the typical family car.Any opportunity to play in the mud is good.

Hydeaway Bay Excursion

A fantastic classroom with a view, greeted the Year 11 MarineScience students at Hydeaway Bay/Champagne Bay. Thestudent were there to collect some scientific data about thefragile fringing reef and the rock pools at low tide for theirassignment. The students observed many different marineorganisms throughout the day. They were able to gather abioticdata, such as pH, salinity, temperature and dissolved oxygen,using software loaded onto their phones. The day was a greatsuccess with most of the students wishing that all lessons wereat the beach.

PROSERPINE STATE HIGH SCHOOLATHLETICS CARNIVAL 2018

Last Wednesday 8 August, Proserpine State High School heldits annual Athletics Carnival. Enthusiastic students attendedadorned in their house shirts and showed a wonderful displayof school pride.

The day itself was full of students jumping, throwing, running,dancing and cheering for their house with plenty of laughsalong the way. Again, participation won the day with Flinderssuccessful based on their excellent numbers in “B” Divisionevents, defeating Oxley (who led “A” Division by 45 points),Kennedy and Cook. There were excellent numbers participatingenthusiastically in all events for all houses particularly the Under13, Under 14 and Open age divisions. Flinders ability to ensureevery event had the maximum number of “A” and “B” Divisioncompetitors they could, was evident with only one agechampion but a winning margin of 50 points over Oxley whohad four age champions.

Congratulations to all those who attended and participated ina great day. There was some excellent individual performancesparticularly in the Open Boys where Ryan Wynne (100m andshot put) and Howard McDonald (javelin) came very close tobreaking records. Also Vanya Ngakuru’s 10.96m shot put, MacRogers high and triple jumps and Arlen Bartley-Looke’s sprintdouble were highlights of the carnival.

The sunny conditions gave the school hats a workout andthere was a steady stream of students to the sun safe tentfor sunscreen. The Sunsafe Carnival Shield for all carnivals willbe announced soon on parade. Congratulations to our athleteswho competed for both team and the individual honours ofpersonal bests and age champions. A number of agechampionships were very tight contests.

Thanks goes to all the staff who helped during the day whichonce again turned out to be a highlight of the school calendar.

WHITSUNDAY ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Any students who finished first or second in any events qualifyto represent the school at the Whitsunday Athletics Carnivalhere on Thursday 23 August and should have collected theirforms and returned them and the trial fee to the office tocompete.

The North Queensland Athletics Trials are in Townsville onFriday 7 September. After the Whitsunday Carnival anystudents who finish first in track events (100,200,400,800mand Hurdles) qualify and second have had their best timenominated. Students who finish first, second or third in field anddistance events (1500m, 3000m and 5000m) qualify to attendNQ Trials.

There will be training after school on Thursday’s and studentscan see HPE staff to request/ organise other lunchtime or afterschool training.

GAVEL CLUB

The mission of the Gavel Club is to provide a mutuallysupportive and positive learning environment in which everymember has the opportunity to develop communication andleadership skills, which in turn fosters self-confidence andpersonal growth. The club allows members to practice English,Japanese, Humanities and Drama oral presentations forassessment preparation. So if you have a problem with publicspeaking, this is a way to overcome this and achieve highermarks in your orals.

Meeting are on every second week (even weeks in the schoolcalendar) on a Thursday starting at 3:15pm to 5:15pm in SL2(Japanese room in the Science and Language Centre).

Students that need to catch the service bus home are providedwith a bus pass on request.
