What is Matter?

Matter can be described as anything that takes up space and has mass.

An element is a type of matter that cannot be broken down into another substance by chemical reactions.

Copper, gold, and oxygen are all examples of elements.

A compound is a type of matter that is made up of two or more elements.

Water (H2O) is an example of a compound.

What is a Physical Property?

A physical property is a characteristic that can be measured or observed without changing the identity of the substance.

Examples: Texture Color Size Mass Volume Solubility Miscibility

Weight and Mass

Weight is a measure of the force of gravity on you

Mass is the measurement of how much matter an object contains.

Unlike its weight, an object’s mass will not change if the force of gravity on its changes.

Units of Mass

International System of Units (SI)For mass, the SI unit is the kilogram (kg)We will usually work with the gram (g)There are 1000 grams in a kilogram

Volume

The amount of space that matter occupies is called its volume.

You can use a graduated cylinder to measure the volume of liquids or powdered solids.

Measured in Cubic Meters (m3 ), Liters (L), Milliliter (mL) and Cubic Centimeters (cm3 )

1 kilometer=1,000 meters 1 centimeter=0.01 meter

Volume cont.

A mathematical formula can be used to measure the volume of a cube.

The volume displacement method is used to measure the volume of irregularly shaped objects that sink in water.

What is a Chemical Property?

A chemical property is a characteristic that describes the atomic or elemental composition of substances.

It describes the way a substance reacts with other substances.

Pre-Lab

In this lab, you will be working with unknown substances.

Gloves and goggles must be worn during the entire experiment.

You will be using a triple beam balance. You will be using a graduated cylinder.
