Austal’sUSshipyardoccupiesapproximately134acresandislocatedinMobile,Alabama,ontheMobileRiver.Theshipyardwaterfrontisapproximately20milesfromtheopenGulf.Theoriginalassemblybay(90ftx360ft)iscapableofaluminumshipconstructionupto80ftwide,74fthighand350ftlong.Thefacilityprovidesforconstructionmaterialstorage,fabricationandhullerectionfloorspace.Theexisting380ftwharfisconnectedtothebuildingbya65ft-longconcretelaunchpad.Shiplaunchisaccomplishedbytransferringtheshipfromkeelblockstotransfercars,rollingtheshipoutofthebuildingonaremovabletracksystemontoalaunchbargeordrydock,andsubsequentlyfloodingthebargeordrydockforshipfloat-off.TheNorthernExpansionfacilitywascompletedinNovember2005.Thisexpansionaddstwolarge(134ftx400ft)buildingsformodulefabrication/erectionandcomponentstorage,connectedby2mezzaninelevels(25ftx400ft)forshopspace,materialstorage,andsmallassemblyfabrication;twoadditionallaunchpads;acombinedwharflengthof750ft;andadditionaloverheadcranescapableoflifting40-tonmodules.InJuly2008,Austalbrokegroundonanew700,000sfmodularmanufacturingfacility.Thisprojectwillincludean80,000sfwarehouseand60,000sfofficebuilding.Completionofthisprojectshouldenabletheshipyardtodoubleitsshipyardstafftoover2,000employeesandwillspeeduptheshipbuildingprocessincreasingtheyard’sannualproductoutput.AustaliscurrentlypreparingtheU.S.Navy’sLittoralCombatShip(LCS2)forseatrials.TheLCS2seaframeisbasedonAustal’sinnovative127-meterhigh-speedaluminumtrimaranhullformthatenablestheshiptoreachsustainablespeedsofover40knotsandrangeinexcessof3,500nauticalmiles,withanunmatchedinteriorvolumeandpayloadforavesselofthissize.Austalispreparingthesecondoftwo107-meterHawaiiSuperferriesfordeliveryinDecember.HawaiiSuperferryisusingAustalfast-ferrytechnologytoestablishHawaii’sfirsthigh-speedvehicle-passengerservice.Eachcatamarancancarry866passengersandupto282cars.
