The Ian Pearce Piano Scholarship Another Successful Student

Fraser Reynolds started exploring the piano when he was seven years old and has been playing ever since. As a child he played for fun but at high school he was asked to play for a production band — the start of something serious. At Hobart College Fraser was tutored by Jennifer Marten-Smith in classical piano performance. This was his main style of playing and became the focus of his studies.

Under the Ian Pearce Piano Scholarship Fraser was tutored by Tom Vincent. A program of fortnightly two-hour lessons on improvisation was an exciting change of direction; Fraser had never been formally instructed in playing jazz. He had barely scratched the surface of improvisation and to be learning these techniques was a huge broadening of his musical knowledge, his primary reason for applying for the scholarship — “I completed the course with a greatly developed appreciation of just how vast musical understanding can be.”

Over the years Fraser has performed in the styles of production band keys parts, accompanying on the piano for eisteddfods, solo and ensemble classical performance — and now in an ensemble jazz format. Fraser describes performing at the 2017 Clarence Jazz Festival as being “in many ways a unique experience; my first time performing jazz, playing with all professional musicians, and performing at a significant public event to a large crowd.”

As to the future, Fraser says, “My aspirations as a pianist don't extend to being my main profession, but I will be performing at various venues for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra virtuoso performance program throughout 2017. I intend to continue accompanying students and also taking the Chamber Music Program rehearsals at Hobart College.

“The tutoring I received under the Ian Pearce Piano Scholarship was a wonderful and unique experience — an absolute pleasure learning from Tom Vincent.”

The Hobart Jazz Club Inc. congratulates Fraser on his enthusiastic study and practice of jazz. Club members and individual donors can only imagine the gratification of the late Ian Pearce, AM, at the musical education happening in his name. Contributed by Ann Greenwood

We had some lovely visitors from the Gippsland Jazz Club at our March Jazz club. They were very impressed with our club night. Here is an email we received fro them. G’Day Kaye. Firstly, a big thank you to you and your members for making Ann and I so welcome at your AGM and thank you for the great music and food. Here is my bit on the first recordings, if you like it I’m working on another ar cle on 1917 ( it was a very defining year ) Thanks again, let me know if you want any more stuff. Best wishes Eric. JAZZBO’S JOTTINGS (Eric) So here we are past February 2017, the 26th of February marked the 100th anniversary of arguably the most important date in jazz history. On that day, 2 sides of a 78 RPM were recorded in the studio of the Victor Talking Ma-chine Co, one of the smaller recording companies in New York and what makes this date so historic? The record was actually released on the 8th March making it the first widely available jazz record. Like almost everything else in jazz, the story has many twists, turns and rumours. The cold, hard facts however are: the band was called The Original Dixie-land Jazz Band and had Nick LaRocca (Cornet) , Larry Shields (Clarinet), Eddie Edwards (Trombone), Henry Ragas (Piano) and Tony Sbarbaro (Drums), side one was Dixie Jazz Band One Step and side two Livery Stable Blues. The band members were young white men from New Orleans and seem to have moved to Chicago in early 1916 and then to New York before the end of the year The same tunes were recorded by the band in the pres g-ious Colombia studios at the end of January but were thought to be too rough and crude so were not released. Another well supported story is that in late 1916 the offer to record was offered to an” Afro-American” band led by Freddie Keppard also from New Orleans but he declined the offer. Both tracks are available on You-tube and both lend support to the proposi on that N.O. jazz was purely collec ve and did not have solos, you can hear the occasional 2 bar break and that’s it. That’s it for now. Keep well and stay swingin’ Further informa on or comments ? 5664 7376 or [email protected]
