Q:- USING COLD THERAPY FORMUSCULAR ACHES AND PAINS ?Should Injuries / Strains be treated with

COLD Therapy?There are two basic types of injury , acute andchronic. Acute injuries are sudden, sharp,traumatic injuries that occur immediately (orwithin hours) and cause pain (possibly severepain).Most often acute injuries result from some sort ofimpact or trauma such as a fall, sprain, orcollision and it's pretty obvious what caused theinjury. Acute injuries also cause common signsand symptoms of injury such as pain, tenderness,redness, skin that is warm to the touch, swellingand inflammation. If you have swelling, you have

an acute injury.Chronic injuries on the other hand, can be subtleand slow to develop. They sometimes come andgo, and may cause dull pain or soreness. Theyare often the result of overuse, but sometimesdevelop when an acute injury is not properlytreated and doesn't heal.

Cold TherapyCold therapy such as Cold Gel Packs can be thebest immediate treatment for acute injuriesbecause it reduces swelling and pain.

Cold Frozen Gel packs can be considered to bea vaso-constrictor (it causes the blood vessels tonarrow) and it limits internal bleeding at theinjury site. Apply a pack within its outer cover

(never directly against the skin) to the affectedarea for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Allow theskin temperature to return to normal beforecooling a second or third time. You can cool anacute injury several times a day for up to threedays. Cold therapy is also helpful in treatingsome overuse injuries or chronic pain in athletes.An athlete who has chronic knee pain thatincreases after running may want to cool theinjured area after each run to reduce or preventinflammation. It's not helpful to cool a chronicinjury before exercise.The best way to cool an injury is with a high

quality gel pack that conforms to the body.Whilst exposure to cold can ease pain andswelling, Gel or Ice packs can also stop bloodflow if left on the skin too long. Researchers say,ice packs should not stay on the skin longer thana half-hour.Always keep a cloth between your skin and thepad, never allow a Cold Gel Pad to stay incontact directly with the skin.If the injury occurs in an area with little fat ormuscle beneath the skin, such as a toe, take thecompress off after 10 minutes maximum.
