WATER WELLTurkish Cultural Center - Miami

A one-day trip to Haiti was all that my husband, and somemembers of the Turkish Cultural Center needed in order to take mattersinto their own hands. The purpose of this short trip was to provide foodand clothes to children of one of Port-au-Prince's orphanages. Whilefood and clothes are an everyday necessity, water is by far the mostessential resource that these children lack. The Turkish Cultural Centerhas been providing much help to individuals in Haiti through donationssince 2010. This last trip impacted many of the Centers members as theywere able to experience first hand what it is to live lacking suchimportant resources, especially, water.

The visit to the orphanage allowed them to see theconditions these children live in. The orphanage caretakeris thankful for all the help donated for the children;however, she wishes for the possibility of building a waterwell. While food and clothes are necessary, and donationsare appreciated, she finds the building of a water wellmuch more helpful. As she explained and showed,

vegetable seeds have been planted; however, they do notgrow and expand because she is unable to water them. Thewater well these children have access to is not deepenough; hence, the water is limited and dirty. Thecaretaker stated that by building a water well, seeds can beplanted, watered, and maintained. Thus, allowing thechildren to consume fresh vegetables and fruits on a dailybasis. By building a water well, not only will they haveportable water, they will also grow their own food.

The Turkish Cultural Center has decided to makethe building of a well possible for these children. The nextplanned visit to Haiti is by the end of May 2013. It is

during this trip that the Turkish Cultural Center would liketo initiate the process of building a water well at theorphanage. In order to initiate this process though, it is ofessence that enough funds are met. Private Americancompanies are the ones in charge of building these wells, and the cost for one is $12,000 (USD). A figure that mayseem high to some; however, the benefits are endless. These children will be able to drink clean water, shower, and grow their own vegetables and fruits.

Above: The current well at the orphanage is not

deep enough; hence, the water is not clean (as can

    be seen below).
