From: The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition | Date: 2008 | TheColumbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. Copyright 2008 Columbia UniversityPress.aristocracy [Gr.,=rule by the best], in political science, government by a socialelite. In the West the political concept of aristocracy derives from Plato'sformulation in the Republic. The criteria on which aristocracy is based mayvary greatly from society to society. Historically, aristocracies have usually

rested on landed property, have invoked heredity, and, despite frequentconflicts with the throne, have flourished chiefly within the framework ofmonarchy . Aristocracy may be based on wealth as well as land, as in ancientCarthage and medieval Venice, or may be a theocracy like the Brahman castein India. Other criteria can be age, race, military prowess, or culturalattainment. The best example of a modern landowning aristocracy thatconducted government was in England from 1688 to 1832. A resurgence bythe French aristocracy in the 18th cent. was ended by the French Revolution, which abolished most of the privileges on which it was based. Inflation, whichcut into the fixed income of the aristocracy, the loss of the traditional militaryrole of the aristocracy, and the rise of industry and decline in the importanceof landed property have all worked against the aristocracy. Today the politicalpower of traditional western aristocracy has all but disappeared.Bibliography: See J. H. Kautsky, The Politics of Aristocratic Empires (1982).

The Land Of Dreams by William BlakeAwake, awake my little Boy!Thou wast thy Mother's only joy:Why dost thou weep in thy gentle sleep?Awake! thy Father does thee keep.

"O, what land is the Land of Dreams? What are its mountains, and what are its streams?O Father, I saw my Mother there,Among the lillies by waters fair.

Among the lambs clothed in whiteShe walked with her Thomas in sweet delight.I wept for joy, like a dove I mourn—O when shall I return again?"

Dear child, I also by pleasant streamsHave wandered all night in the Land of Dreams; But though calm and warm the waters wide,I could not get to the other side.

"Father, O Father, what do we here,In this land of unbelief and fear? The Land of Dreams is better farAbove the light of the Morning Star."...
