Promising treatments for MS Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the Society today at www.nationalMSsociety.org or 1-800-582-5296 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

Sponsorship of society programs or events does not connote that the National Multiple Sclerosis Society recognizes superiority in products or services provided by the sponsoring entity over other entities providing like or similar products or services.

MOVING IS WHO WE ARE

“Unlikely activists took small steps to fuel momentum and

make big change.”Over the years I have heard people say things like “I could never be an MS activist,” or “I don’t know anything about politics.” In reality, anyone can become an activist for people living with multiple sclerosis. And sometimes, all it takes is for people to tell their stories.

This past year, the Minnesota Chapter received phone calls, e-mails and letters from more than 60 people who saw sudden spikes in prescription co-payments for MS disease- modifying drugs under some employer-based health plans. They shared their stories about how this affected their day-to-day lives and how they feared it would affect their futures.

Thanks to these people who expressed concern, we had plenty to talk about with the health insurance companies. MS activists wrote letters to their insurance companies and several people joined chapter staff in a meeting with health plan representatives. Last spring, we recruited Rep. Rod Hamilton, who lives with MS, to introduce legislation to cap co-payments for MS disease-modifying drugs.

Many of the people who took a stand on this issue didn’t consider themselves activists. But by speaking up, this group of unlikely activists took small steps to fuel momentum and make big change. As the chapter prepares for the 2009 legislative session, capping co-pays for MS drugs is a top priority.

Join your fellow MS activists and help put an end to co-pay increases. Learn about this year’s Capitol Conference on Page 13. I hope to see you there!

Elizabeth Carlson — diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2002 — has been fighting to lower the cost of co-payments for prescription drugs for MS and other chronic illnesses under employer-based health plans.

In 2008 Carlson received notice from her health insurance company that her prescription co-payment for the MS disease-modifying drug Rebif would increase 1,500 percent — causing her annual out-of-pocket expense to jump from $160 to $2,400. After her MS diagnosis, she had to make many life adjustments, but now, Carlson worried she’d have to make drastic financial changes as well.

“Now people with chronic illness may have to make a choice between paying for rent or groceries and getting their medication,” Carlson said, “That’s not right.”

She felt disbelief, sadness and anger but realized she had the resources and abilities to reverse the change. Carlson took her first step toward becoming an activist; she wrote a letter.

Carlson has written eight letters to key state representatives, three of whom serve on the Health and Human Services Committee. She considers her activism on the issue to be

a routine part of managing the disease. Though Carlson knows it could be years before she and others with MS see a change in co-pays, she remains hopeful and strong willed.

“We don’t decide to get MS, but we can decide how we will approach it,” she said. “I have the strength. I am a finisher, I won’t quit until we see the change.”

The Minnesota Chapter offers two great ways to maintain fitness, connect with others and join the MS movement in 2009.

MS Fitness ClubThe first opportunity is the MS Fitness Club — a sharing group that gives people with multiple sclerosis a chance to discuss individual fitness goals and exercise programs. The club is open to anyone with MS who is presently exercising or who is interested in exercising. Tom Holtackers, a physical therapist who lives with MS, facilitates the sessions.

The MS Fitness Club meets the third Saturday of the month at the chapter office from 10 a.m. to noon.

Topics may include:

1. Fitness and exercise: what are they, how will they help me, how do I get started and how do I keep going?

2. How do I develop long- and short-term goals?

3. How much is too much or too little exercise?

4. What exercises help improve fatigue?

5. What exercises help improve strength?

6. What exercises help manage spasticity?

7. What exercises help manage bladder symptoms?

8. Exercise of the month

9. Nutritional tip of the month

MS Fitness Club and TeamJoin the movement.

MS Fitness TeamThe MS Fitness Team provides people with MS an opportunity to connect with others throughout the chapter area from the comfort of their own home.

To be a member of the MS Fitness Team you must be a person with MS, commit to some form of physical exercise at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week, volunteer for the MS Society at least 25 hours a year, and raise $250 for the chapter.

Members of the team network with one another via message boards and telephone calls. Team members receive certificates of completion and T-shirts to wear at chapter programs and events.

Equipment programsExchange or borrow the equipment you need, when you need it.

Equipment Exchange

The Minnesota Chapter Equipment Exchange is available to help people with disabilities purchase new equipment and sell or donate items they no longer need. Equipment ranges from accessible vans to stair glides.

Any donated equipment is a non-cash charitable contribution and you may apply it in part to your tax deductions. The Equipment Exchange is open to the public and viewed nationwide.

Equipment Loan Program

The Equipment Loan program allows people with MS to try out equipment before making an important purchase or to address the ever-changing nature of the disease. This program offers equipment in the Twin Cities metro area as well as Brainerd, Hutchinson and Duluth. It is a great way to try before you buy or use something while on vacation. The most popular loan items are three-wheel scooters, walkers and manual wheelchairs.

Borrow

The process is simple. Just call Scott at 612-335-7967. Equipment can be used from one week to three months depending on the type of equipment and your needs.

Buy, donate or sell

Visit www.MSsociety.org and click on Equipment Exchange under “MS Links.” To sell or donate an item, click to place the item on the exchange board. To browse available items for purchase, simply scroll down the page.

Capitol ConferenceCreate change through activism.

Feb. 3 n St. Paul

Every year at the National MS Society, Minnesota Chapter Capitol Conference, Minnesotans come together to speak with lawmakers about issues affecting people with multiple sclerosis. At this year’s conference, MS activists will focus on two key issues: a bill to cap prescription co-payments for MS disease-modifying drugs under employer-based health plans and a tax credit for people who care for loved ones with disabilities.

This conference is for anyone who wants to speak up for people living with MS in Minnesota. No experience is necessary. Group leaders guide participants throughout the day. Before visiting the Capitol, activists must participate in one teleconference training and one in-person training.

New this year, the Minnesota Chapter offers three date options for both teleconference and in-person trainings. Training sessions include tips for meeting with legislators and an overview of this year’s hot issues.

Conference requirements:n Participate in one teleconference training

n Participate in one in-person training

n Commit to at least one follow-up meeting with your legislators

The chapter will provide:n Hotel accommodations for participants from

greater Minnesota

n Lunch at the Capitol

n Transportation from greater Minnesota where feasible

n Materials and supplies for conference visits

In 2007, the National MS Society launched an MS Film Festival to give people affected by multiple sclerosis a platform to tell their story and show the world how they move forward. A film committee made up of people with MS who work in the entertainment industry selected five finalists to be paired with a production company to help bring their stories to life.

Sharpen your movie critic’s tongue, find inspiration in other people’s stories or just sit back and relax. Join the St. Paul Care to Share self-help group or the Hutchinson self-help group for a screening of the five winning films. Popcorn will be served.

Back to FitnessDiscover the benefits exercise can bring to your life.

Physical fitness is an important aspect of your overall health care strategy. It is known to reduce pain levels, strengthen and stabilize muscles and improve work and recreational activities. Join others with multiple sclerosis by participating in the Back to Fitness program.

The Back to Fitness program at the Minneapolis Clinic of Neurology is a medically supervised therapeutic exercise program that helps people with medical conditions that require rehabilitation to improve functional tolerance for daily activities. The Back to Fitness program specializes in treating people with neurological conditions, including MS. Center staff work closely with the Schapiro Center for Multiple Sclerosis, with Dr. Randall Schapiro and Dr. Jonathan Calkwood, as well

as the Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research Center, with Dr. Gary Birnbaum.

Program participants receive instructions for home fitness, health club recommendations, lessons in body mechanics and posture, and education about their condition and how exercise plays an important role in managing symptoms.

How it worksn After a one-on-one consultation, the Back

to Fitness team develops a need-specific program just for you.

n The program generally runs six weeks or longer depending on how often you are able to attend sessions.

n The Back to Fitness team modifies the program in the event of insurance or financial issues or if participants need little supervision.

Centers are located in Burnsville and Minneapolis. Call to set up an appointment. Prescriptions are needed for services.

Are you a Movement Ambassador?n Do you often talk with people about your involvement with the MS Society?

n Are you interested in sharing your story about how MS affects your life?

n Do you enjoy mobilizing and engaging people in the MS movement?

If so, you should be a Movement Ambassador.

The Movement Ambassador program is an exclusive opportunity for people who are committed to engaging others in the MS movement.

Learn more and sign up at MSsociety.org.

For more information, contact Jenna at 612-335-7981 or [email protected]

There are many ways to support the movement to create a world free of multiple sclerosis. But did you know you can make a significant gift through your insurance policy?

Let it go. Make an outright gift of a paid-up life insurance policy.

Start anew. Take out a new policy with the National MS Society as owner and beneficiary. Your continuing premium payments, usually gifted directly to the society, are income tax deductible. With small annual payments, you can yield a sizable gift to the society.

To learn more, contact Shannon at 612-335-7928 or [email protected].
