***UPDATE*** In the 2007 Holiday edition, we were able to put small “thumbnail” prints of the animals that had been adopted that year, but this year there are way too many. That leads us to say thank you to all those proud new parents that saw the true potential in the rescues. We know that taking the plunge and adding to your family is a big commitment. However, when those big grateful eyes stare back at you with wonderment and affection, how can you not know you made the right decision?

Happy HolidaysVolunteering in rescue, we used to believe our lives had “gone to the dogs.” Now, with a chuckle, we know with publishing the magazine it actually has gone to “the dogs, cats, reptiles, birds, rabbits, ferrets” and who knows maybe even fish in the future! 2008 has been a hectic year, but nothing could please us more than the thought of all the fuzzy faces enjoying this season of love and goodwill in their new permanent homes.

In the 2007 Holiday edition, we were able to put small “thumbnail” prints of the animals that had been adopted that year, but this year there are way too many. That leads us to say thank you to all those proud new parents that saw the true potential in the rescues. We know that taking the plunge and adding to your family is a big commitment. However, when those big grateful eyes stare back at you with wonderment and affection, how can you not know you made the right decision?

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our advertisers. Without their support we couldn’t bring you picture perfect (or is that pawfect?) pets with their zany write-ups to make you laugh while they tug at your heart strings. Also, we’d like to thank our distributors for their kind support. Finally, we thank the people working in rescue who contribute tirelessly all year round. We admire your good work and are amazed at the amount of precious lives you really do save.

Best wishes for the Holidays — see you in February 2009!

Cover Model:My name is Nashira, it means fortunate one. I was hit by a vehicle and left in a parking lot. When SCARS heard, a couple of volunteers drove out to get me and took me right to the vet. Within a couple days another volunteer drove me to Calgary for surgery…then an-other volunteer picked me up

and brought me back to an Edmonton foster home. I am so lucky that there are so many kind, helpful peo-ple in the world. I had a fracture of the right femoral neck and fracture of the right ilium. I am not sure what all of those are, but they sure hurt! My expected recovery to walk normally is 8wks. When I am spayed I will also have to have a metal wrench removed from my stomach…amazing what shows up in those x-rays! Thanks again to the clinics for all of their wonderful medical care, to the people that made it possible for me to get to all my appointments, and to my foster home that is taking such amazing care of me! You are all truly my Guardian Angels. Love and Licks!

***UPDATE***On December 1st, hours before going to press, we received word that sweet little Nashira was fight-ing for her life. She has the distemper virus which is usually terminal. After all she has faced in her short life it is heartbreaking to think a simple vaccination could have spared her this fight. At this point, we are unsure if Nashira will recover. Please keep this little angel in your heart and prayers and remind everyone you know of the importance of vaccinations.

“Puppies chase kittens, kittens chase mice. Have you been naughty, or have you been nice?” These words accompany delightful colour photographs of kittens and puppies and even a little mouse all posing for the camera looking as cute as can be. This young children’s board book contains a wonderful photo collection of furry ani-mals all decked out in hats, scarves, santa suits, and angel’s wings depicting the joy of the Christmas season. While the pictures in this book will melt any scrooge’s heart, the text is heavy like a lump of coal. Now granted the audience for this board book is clearly for toddlers, but even they like a little more rhyming and order to their stories than what is presented here. The story opens with a kitten waiting for Santa, and continues on with descriptions depict-ing getting ready for Christmas. However, halfway through the book the text changes to describe the photographs, leaving the story behind. This lack of flow is very odd and I found the rest of the book unsatisfy-ing. Now toddlers might not care very much about the words, but if it becomes their favourite book and you end up read-ing it one hundred times, you’ll certainly wish the story was more engaging!

Sweet, petite, and gorgeous to look at, that’s me in a nut shell! My name is Gwenny and I have a very loving personal-ity. I am great with everyone so far. I am about 2yrs old and seem to be a Dober-

man X. I stay close to my people and learn quickly. Am I your kinda girl?

Nedley Du Right is what they call me, and I aim to please! I seem to be a 5yr old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever…that’s a mouthful! I am great with people, kids and dogs…but I am not so keen on the cats (sorry). I keep giving a bad first impression because I bounce around too much. The thing is that if you pay close atten-tion I never bounce on you (just around you), and never over the fence (just behind it). I love my people very much and I am house trained. My foster mom loves the cute way I stomp my feet when I wait for her.

Well I am a conundrum! I could perhaps be a dwarfed Elk Hound, maybe a Sheba Inu X, or perhaps a Corgi “designer dog” of sorts. Who knows, Who cares? What does matter is that I am cute, small and great

with kids, dogs, and cats. What more do you need to know? Just in case here are a few more details. My name is Quigby and I am a 1.5yr old boy who is crate trained and loves to snuggle.

That’s me, Soda POP! I have spring loaded feet and absolutely love people, kids, cats, and other dogs. I am squirrel crazy and will spend many minutes at the bottom of the tree telling the squirrel to take the plunge. Although they never listen I remain optimistic. Life has been hard for a young girl only a year old. I was scared, skinny and got dumped out on my own. I sure am glad I ended up here! What other good things could happen to this Shepherd/Hound X girl? Maybe I will even get a new home of my own!!!

I can’t believe my eyes, I am so excited to be here! My name is Sue and thanks to the combined efforts of rescue groups us dogs sometimes find ourselves transferred to help accommodate more rescues and save more lives. I came from SCARS. I am a sweet, gentle girl and I love other dogs, kids, and cats. I am 1.5yrs old, listen well, stay close, and I am house trained. I am always a ray of sunshine and forever smiling.

My name is Sonny and I have not given up hope of finding a new forever home! I am great with all ages of people and wonderful with other dogs (sorry folks I don’t care much for the felines!). When I was rescued it

was discovered I had been shot in the leg. Unfortunately the damage was too extensive and my leg could not be saved. I am around 3-4yrs old, housetrained, love to go for long walks and I’m good in the car. I am a gentle and loving fellow. My foster mom says I have the courage of a cham-pion and the soul of an angel.

I am a Collie X, about 1yr old, named Arthur. I seem to be good off leash as I like to stay close. I love to get attention and I am pretty good with the resident dogs here. My house training is coming

along, and I am learning that the crate is not a terrible place. I am not totally convinced of that quite yet! I am about 50lbs and just an all around nice guy. Hmmm, do you like cats? Can’t say that I do. So if your home is feline free, come and get me!!!

My name is Ernie and I am being returned through no fault of my own. My family is very sad about

this, but the allergies are just too bad. I am such a friendly and social guy. I love dogs and I’m good with other cats. I am about 1yr old and I absolutely adore people.

“I’ll be home for Christmas, you can count on me…just find me some people to love forever, and I’ll be the best dog I can be!” My name is Keko and I am a really nice boy. Although a little shy at first, I love people, get along with cats and I am really good with kids. I am crate trained, and do well in the house, but prefer not to be left outside alone. I just get so lonely and can’t help but express myself vocally. I can be a bit dominant with other dogs, I think it’s because I want to have my people all to myself.

Hi, my name is Linnie. I am a 10 month old Shepherd/Golden Re-triever X, and boy-oh-boy do I like to run, play, and cuddle! I would be a great run-ning companion and my foster mom thinks I would rock at fly ball. I can be a bit timid in

new situations, but settle in soon enough and I am super loyal. I LOVE to play and rough-house with Taffi, the resident dog here, but at bedtime I’m quite happy to sneak up onto fos-ter mom’s bed to snuggle. I am 59lbs, healthy and can’t wait to ring in the New Year with my new people…could that be you?

It’s all about the food, I will do anything for it. Seriously! My name is Kya and food management is really important for me. I am an older girl and my owners surrendered me to the pound. I am 60lbs (but it’s coming off

steadily and I plan to lose 25), very loyal, and have been good with other dogs. I am house trained and have always lived inside.

Hello! I am a very large, young, Husky X named Norm. I love people and I am ok with most dogs. I think a home with older kids is best since I can play a little rough. Whenever I am happy (which

is a lot) I do a little song and dance, it’s my way of showing you how wonderful I think life is. Oh, I almost forgot -I LOVE truck rides! I’m all ready to go, I even had a bad tooth removed.

My name is Digger. Despite having been hit by a car some time ago sustaining a broken front leg, being attacked by a bear, and also shot in the leg, I am an all around lovebug. It turns out my biggest problem was the in-jury on my wrist from

when I was attacked by a bear back in Sep-tember in front of my previous owners. I had a pretty major surgery to take away the constant pain, while still saving my leg. The wonder-ful Dr. Sereda at the Edmonton Veterinarian’s Emergency Clinic did a procedure that will hopefully fuse my wrist joint, and I now sport a steel plate. I am only about 2yrs old, and the sweetest boy you could ever meet. I get along great with the other dogs & kids in my foster home, and even with the pain I still get frisky and like to play. I have a couple of broken teeth to be taken care of (that bear was really mean!), but I am still up to meeting potential families! My total recovery will take about 3 months and I will still walk with a limp, but the pain will be gone. Thank you everyone for giving me a true Second Chance!

Hello there, my name is Cinnamon. I am a sweet, young, active, Lab X that loves to snuggle and because of my sweet and concerned nature, I tend to

mother my doggie friends. I can be a bit timid at first but come around once I feel comfortable. For more info on me call (780) 222-PAK9 (7259)

They call me Bugsy and I am extra special because I have extra toes (poly-dactyl). I am a large 2yr old boy -all head

and feet! Though I came to SNAP under-weight and injured, I have healed well and I am gaining weight. I get more and more handsome every day! Possibly due to abuse, I have some issues with men and have been known to nip when feeling threatened. I need a patient forever home willing to put time and effort into regaining my trust. Do you have some extra TLC to spare for me?

I’m a beautiful boy around 6 months of age. I was found, months ago, wandering in the country-side. I am so very grateful that I was rescued. I’m extremely friendly, very playful and I love toys and

people. I can’t wait for you to come and take me home.

Hi...my name is Clarence and I am the only one left out of my litter of 10. I’m not quite sure why this is as I’m cute as a button. Perhaps my fostermom wants to make sure that I go to the right

home because I will grow really big and will need lots of excersie. I’m only 4 months right now and still living the puppy life. Oh yes, and I’m a Bloodhound X.

Max is what they call me. I am 5yrs old, tall, and have an inquisitive nature. I am really hoping my special family notices me soon as this will be my sec-ond Christmas with

SNAP. I promise I will provide MAXimum love to anyone who takes me into their heart and gives me a home. I’m very playful for my age and can’t wait to go home with my family.

I’m such a hand-some little man, but not much else is known about me yet. They think I am about 1yr old. I’m very timid and shy in nature, but you will see my personality shine when I settle in. Currently living in foster care I’m hoping someone will decide that I’ll make a nice addition to their family for every holiday hereafter! Could it be you?

I’m ready for my pedicure! Yes, it’s me again, Mona. I was returned to SNAP through no fault of my own. I’m about 1.5yrs old with the silkiest coat ever. I’m sweet, affection-ate, talkative, and

trying my best to be patient while I’m waiting for you. I’m not sure why I’ve been here for over 5 months because I’m told I’m a beauti-ful, charming and lovely little kitty.

Sammy is my name and they tell me I am about 1.5yrs old. I’m a pound rescue, and though I’m grateful for the warm space and all the food, I can’t wait to go to my new home. I’m very timid and softspoken, so I would do best in a home that is quiet. This is my second set of holidays with SNAP…unless one of you take me home forever that is!

Hi…I’m a little wallflower and my name is Sadie Hawkins. There’s only one of lil’ ole me. I am a Shep-herd X and I’m

coming up on 3 months old. I’m waiting patiently for my new mom. Will you dance with me?

They call me Tux because of my striking black and white suit. I am a large 1.5 yr old boy. Because I’m a pound rescue, not much is known about my back-

ground. I’m an energetic cat who is very playful. Living in foster care, I’ve been with SNAP since December 2007. I can’t wait to have a family I can call my own.

“Jingle bells, Jingle bells, Jingle all the way…oh what fun, it will be, on my adop-tion day-Hey!”I just came from the pound and I am doing my best to ad-just to my new

accommodations. I am very shy and timid in nature so I would do best in a quiet home, preferably as the only pet. I’m an especially gentle and loving girl looking for a loving lap to curl up on soon.

Puppies Galore!! Well hello! We’re quadruplets, yes, there’s four of us sisters and brothers. We are about 4 months old and Rottie X with… well who knows. That’s why we’re going to be larger dogs when we grow up. We’re so

excited and can’t wait to find our new homes!

Hi my name is George and I have been a stray for over 3 years. My foster mom fed me, befriended me and was able to have me neutered. I have been living in her yard and have a

cozy chair in her greenhouse, but I also sleep under the steps in a makeshift shelter. Just this last month I have warmed up to my foster mom and I let her pick me up, rub my belly and tweek my frost bitten little ears. I even sur-prised myself, it feels good to have some love so I must have had a home long ago. I’m an outdoor cat but it sure would be nice to have my own space in a barn or garage (heated in a perfect world!). If you, or someone you know, could give me a nice place to stay be-fore it gets too cold I would be so grateful.

Happy Holidays every-one! My name is Tilly. As you can tell from my picture I am a beautiful Black Lab. I am full of life and love pretty much everything and everyone. I came from a house where I got along with

cats and six other dogs. I am adventurous and love investigating stuff with my nose. I am waiting desperately for my new family to see how great I am.

Hi there, my name is JR and I’m about 2.5yrs old. When I’m at my full weight I will be around 95lbs! I had it kind of rough which you can tell from the porcupine marks still healing on my face but it didn’t take

me long to get used to regular TLC! I know some people might be scared because I look like a Rotti, but believe me, I’m a very gentle soul…so many of us are! I’m nice to other dogs and all the people I’ve met, including kids. I’m also housetrained and do great both on and off leash.

Duke & Duchess Animal Rescue

I’m an 8 week old Shepherd/Col-lie/Husky “designer” X. My name is Ali and my coat is deep chocolate which goes really well with my white shoes. Playing with my brothers is great fun, but

I’m looking for a home of my own! I’m very friendly with other dogs, cats and kids.

My name is Andy. Archie and Ali are my littermates and although I am a bit smaller I can still hold my own. My foster mom thinks I have that special look when I want something. I love

playing with my siblings and everyone else too. I am looking for a loving family and hope to be in my new home to start the New Year off just right!

Archie here…hand-some heh? I’m a big, cuddly, teddy bear. What do you think of my sky blue eye? I enjoy playing tag with Ali and Andy but most of all I love being picked up and hugged. Do you

have a lifetime supply of hugs for me? Please call soon I hope to be home for the holidays!

Duchess … Well I’ll accept the position, though I’d prefer to be a Princess!! I am a solitary young girl who is not overly amused by other ferrets ...but I will tolerate being adored by some dogs, cats, and small children. I might have adrenal disease,

but that doesn’t slow me on my duties of “col-lecting” and “stashing” toys! Most of all, I will be happy to accept the love and cuddles (and food) from you human types.

A dynamic duo of mischief and may-hem! My name is Taboo and this is my friend Peanut. We have two speeds –off & warp! We’re able to play until other ferrets are exhausted

… and still keep going! We’re both only five months old. Peanut is a true lady, wrestling only with dignity (and the cat!) while I, Taboo, am a little more excitable. We’d love to dazzle you with our exuber-ance!

Free! We’re free! We seem to have been caged quite a bit in our former home, but now we’re free … and so excited we’ve just got to share the joy. Unfortunately, it seems our joy needs

to be shared with our fangs … which you folks don’t seem to appreciate. Oh well, we are getting better and will continue to nibble less as we learn to relax and enjoy our new found freedom! My name is Vixen and I’m a 3yr old sable girl. My partner and gal pal in “nipper-dom” is Snow. She is 4yrs old and has the funniest way of drinking water ever. She puts her feet in the bowl and knocks the water out of the bowl then drinks off the floor. That’s ok, I still love her, and will always seek her out to cuddle up and sleep with. Just keep us free and we’ll love you forever!

Hello, yes this is me, on the couch, at my foster home. Everyone calls me Lily and I am, what many might call, the biggest lap dog in existence. I am a large Mastiff around 160lbs, although I do need to get my girlish figure back after all the litters of puppies I have had. I am 5-7yrs old and have a wonderful temperament with humans and dog-gies alike. If you could love a big girl like me please call PAKS at (780) 222-PAK9 (7259) or visit www.pak-9.com

Hey hey hey…the name’s Squishy and I am every-thing you would want in a cat

and more! I am about 2yrs old, cuddly, talkative (in a good way), love to play and love to snuggle on big pillows (maybe yours?). Wow there is just so much about me to tell you…probably best you come for a visit so we can discuss me further! I have been here for about 4 months now and I just can’t figure out why no one will adopt such a perfect young man like me!

My name is Snowy and I am a little bit shy. I am an 8 month old girl and when I first arrived

at the shelter I was really scared. Whenever I felt a collar or leash around my neck I would just drop to the ground and turn into mush, so I had to be carried from kennel to kennel. That proved to be a bit of a problem since I am over 80lbs! The SPCA girls worked their magic and even though I still get a little scared I don’t seem to mind walking on leash anymore. Now I am ready to bravely walk into a new life with my very own forever and ever family!

Hello my name is Leaf and I am ready to make like a tree and leave this place! I am a 2yr old boy full of furry love and I have a story to tell you. I was found stuck in a tree and they think I went without food and water for a couple of days because when I was saved by animal control I was lethargic and very dehydrated. Are you wondering why I didn’t just climb down the tree since I am a cat? Well the branch that I was stuck in was hanging over a yard with

a great big dog. Now you know why! I am now safe, healthy and totally happy. I have been here for about 4 months now and that’s a long time for a cat…I hope my forever family finds me in time for the holidays.

I am a 10 month old Coonhound possibly crossed with some yellow Lab, but only my mother knows for sure. Everyone calls me Squirt. I have not had much training so I am not very good on leash yet but I am learning. I love to go to the local off leash area and play with my sister Zyra. I am pretty good at coming to my name, but I have trouble sitting still for a picture! All I want for Christmas is a forever home where I will be loved and cared for!

Bunny –I love my name! Could it be that I am cute like a bunny rabbit? I am a 1yr old Pitt Bull/Rotti X, with some doggie socialization issues. I growl when I meet new dogs but only until I know that they are friendly. I love to have fun off leash in safely confined areas.

My name is Elly and I am a senior dog who came in severely matted. I have had several baths and haircuts though, and now I am exceptionally cute (and clean)! Sadly I have had bad eye infections that have left me blind. I will need eye medications for the rest of my life, an approximate cost of $80.00 per month –but I am worth it! In new environments I am quite shy, but once I know my way around watch out! You should see me boogie around the SPCA!

My name is Teke and I love to boogie! I get along well with other dogs, but kids are not my bag. I am a 4yr old Jack Russell/Miniature American Eskimo X. I am afraid in new situa-tions and can often be reactive, but once I get to know you I am a snuggle bug.

Hi y’all. My name’s Billy and I’m a good ole boy! I spent my youth on the farm, but my momma had to give me up

when she moved to the city. I get along with all kinds o’ folks: other dawgs, men, women, kids. Heck, even cats are fine! I love bein’ indoors, and I have awesome house manners. I’m 9yrs old, but there’s a lotta spunk left in me yet! I just need a new family to share it with.

Wahoo! I’m just over 2yrs old and I could be an amaz-ing dog for you! I know lotsa

tricks and love to play, but mostly I LOVE my people. My name is Darwin and my goal in life is to be a great big lap dog -but everyone says I’m way too big for that. (Hmmm, must be the Wolfhound in me) I get along with nearly all dogs, but my enthusiasm is a bit much for the itty bitty pups. Cats are OK too -as long as they don’t run and ask me to chase them. I bet you’re looking for a bouncy, happy, hunk o’ love to share your home with. Look no further!!(780) 988-9876

PAWS FOR LIFE

Hi, my name is Diaz. I am roughly 2yrs old and part Miniature Pinscher. I am full of energy, love being cuddled and give great kisses. I am very shy and it takes a while for me to warm up to strangers, but once you are part of my pack, you will see who I really am. Hi there, my name is Deli-

lah and these are my three little pups. I had my ba-bies on Thanksgiving and I am thankful that they are healthy and happy. I am a 3yr old Pekinese. My foster family says that I am the true definition of cute and cuddly. I get along great with other dogs, love playing in doggie daycare, and enjoy meeting new people.

Pistol here! I’m a Miniature Pinscher X around 10yrs old...but I always tell everyone I am only 5! I have just had all of my teeth removed and I’m ready to go home for the holidays...every last one of them! I am a loving, super sweet ex-

ample of why you should never give up on life.

My name is Sadie and I am a Bull Mastiff X. I am just over 1yr old and can be timid, but once I get to know you I am full of kisses. I love playing with toys and having fun with my doggie friends.

My name is Quinn. I am a 4yr old Shep X and I love going for car rides. I also really enjoy playing with other dogs and cud-

dling up in front of the fire. I am friendly but also protective. I would do best in a highly active home.

My name is Mickey but I am no mouse – I am all dog! My foster parents think I am a Boxer/Rotwei-ller X. I am between 8-12 months old and weigh about 45lbs. My foster parents laugh when I run after toys and forget to bring them back…but that’s ok because the more they laugh, the more I wag my short little tail! I am a quick learner, but I’m still learning to temper my enthusiasm. I just get so excited that my luck has changed, I can’t hide it!

My name is Sophie and I am a Collie X just over a year old. I’m quite small and full of energy, but I haven’t been able to run too well as I was injured before being rescued and have two bad front paws. One was recently injured

and the other had been previously broken. My foster mom has been working with me and I can walk lots more now. My Christmas wish is to find my own family to love me forever.

My name is Macy and I am a Retriever X. I was found with porcupine quills that had been there for at least a week. I was VERY hungry, but I am less ravenous and possessive these days. I have healed up nicely and I am a very gentle dog. I am good in the house and understand boundar-ies. I am good with other dogs and love people. I take a little time to get used to men but that doesn’t mean I don’t like them!

Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) My name is “Mr. Moppet”, and I was recently neutered. Did you know that spaying and neutering rabbits eliminate the risk of developing many can-cers? We also gener-ally become easier to litter-box train, and of

course it prevents unwanted litters. The EHS staff say I am a joy to watch as I hop and leap around the room practicing my bunny hops! All I would hope for is love, snuggles and a lot of celery leaves (my favorite!).

HI! My name is Chewy. I am a Shiba Inu X and I love, love, love, to play with other dogs. I like kids, new

outings and anything else that I get to do with my people. I am quite smart and have some energy but all I need is some obedience and regular exercise. A playmate in my new home

HI, My name is Rona. I am a Newfoundland/Lab X and I was born in August, 2007. I was surrendered by my owners because I got too big. I do need some help with obedience, but together it will be easy, us dogs always want to please! I have met other dogs, been in a car and also met children (I did great!). I can be a little nervous of new things at first but I am a very loving and playful boy.

December may be the luckiest month for you, if you bring me (December) home! My name is just like the month of December as it perfectly reflects my personality –festive,

fun-loving, and joyous! I am a 1yr old boy who used to be a stray, but I love the indoors and really like to snuggle. I am quite the charmer and I have an unusual trait. I am polydactyl, meaning that I have extra toes – more to use while playing with my favorite toy mice -which entertains me for hours!

Thank You! My spot is sponsored by the following message:Happy Birthday, Mary

Love Mom, Dad, & the rest of the pack!

My fun-loving personality is sure to bring endless smiles in my forever home. I’m Frost, a 3yr old Shepherd/Husky X. I think everything is fun, interesting and meant for play, (with boundar-ies)! With my own brand of surprises, life with me

will keep you constantly on your toes! I’m a smart guy, who learns very quickly. All I want to do is please my owners, so if you’re looking for a devoted, intelligent and loving canine companion, I’m just the dog for you!

I grew up in a place where country life and city life blended together into one mess of a slow moving town. There wasn’t much to occupy my time but running around outside and find-

ing something to keep me out of trouble. For me, it was always some critter I found that I had to save or that just plain needed me. I found baby birds that I claimed couldn’t fly and, of course, I had to take care of. I found kittens that I would swear up and down to my dad were lost and needed a home. There were puppies with injured legs, turtles that lost their way and rabbits that someone was surely going to shoot and eat if I didn’t take them in as my own. From the moment I discovered the freedom of the outdoors, my parents grew quite accustomed to me racing through the front door – out of breath and bursting with excitement – only to tell them of my latest creature that needed rescuing. And of course, after begging and pleading, my dad would follow me back to my little animal and we would figure out what to do next. I rescued a hawk, which my cat almost got the best of and spent countless hours feeding two baby doves whose nest blew down in a storm. The hawk made it just fine, but the doves were too young and broke my heart. But sooner or later, the little country bumpkin that was myself, with skinned knees and tomboy clothes, grew up. I had my own pets to fuss over and busied myself with other adventures. But I was always ready for a rescue when some creature came calling. I just didn’t go looking any more. I made it off to college and got out of my slow moving little town. I consumed myself with studying and developed a busy lifestyle that caused for long days and trying to keep on schedule. But the first summer I was home, I found my childhood ways thrown right back at me, and I became the ten-year-old girl racing to tell her dad what animal needed rescuing. As part of my usual weekend habits, I was sitting in the drive-

thru with my best friend, Amy, at a local coffee shop growing more and more frustrated at how long our coffee seemed to be taking. We chatted about our days and watched as the red and orange streaked sky slowly went down in the distance and gave the city a warm glow as only Texas skies can. We watched for a moment longer and then noticed a flying-v of geese soar over the street just as we were about to grab our drinks. “Something just landed in front of your car,” Amy yelled a moment later, a little shocked at what she had just seen. I was grabbing our coffee and looked over just in time to see a panting, Canadian goose hobble to the curb right in front of my blue Honda civic and hide in the crevice of my tire and the road. Without hesitating, we jumped out of the car. And there, with spit flinging from its mouth and a long pink tongue to the side of its black, sleek beak, was a full grown Canadian goose gasping for air. Its head was slumped over and it perched on the ground with both wings tucked tight to his side. “What do you think is wrong with him?” Amy asked. “I think he’s sick,” I answered not really knowing what was wrong, but immediately getting out the phone to call my dad. I knew I would need his help for this. “Dad, there is a Canadian goose by my car and he looks hurt. I can’t leave it, will you please come up here,” I pleaded. My dad was not unfamiliar with my pleas to come help me save something, so his response was one I expected. “Leave the goose alone, Kate. I am sure he’s fine,” he said. I hung up the phone in frustration, not surprised at his re-sponse, and planned my next move. After all, it wasn’t the first time I had ignored my dads’ warnings to let Mother Nature be. The goose continued to pant but when I reached out a hand to see how tame he was, he hissed and shook his long neck at me in defense. Then, he mustered up the energy to get on his two shaky legs and moved from the side of my car to underneath. By this time I was stopping the drive through from moving and a crowd had gathered. “Did you hit the bird?” one lady yelled from her drivers seat window. “Get some water, or bread, this girl hit a bird and he’s hurt!” the barista ordered from the coffee shop window. “I didn’t hit him, he flew down and walked under the car,” I said slightly frustrated with the crowd and the current situation at hand. I immediately called my dad back. This time, he came. It wasn’t a far drive and not five minutes later, my dad pulled up in his green pick-up with my mom in the drivers seat, gardening gloves on and a cardboard box already in hand. He knelt down and looked under the car. He surveyed the situ-ation like rescuing a goose was an every day occurrence. He just had to figure out the best way to successfully pull off this one. The crowd stood by and watched, unsure of what the people standing by the goose with a box and gloves were about to do. In one swift gesture, my dad cupped the goose from the bottom and secured its neck, ordered my mom to open the box and he gently placed the frightened but surprisingly calm animal in the box. Without hesitation, my mom and dad hurried to the truck with box and goose in hand, and told us to follow them. Amy and I jumped into my car and followed them to our next destination.

A quick drive later, feeling pride that my dad came to the rescue and thrilled to have found this creature who needed me, we ar-rived at the lake down the street from my house. He carried the box and calmly set it down at the bank of the water. Slowly but surely, the frightened goose emerged from the tattered UPS box. He hobbled to the water – still dazed and frightened. He stood at the very tip for a moment and took a drink of water. The sun was going down and in the distance ducks and geese were beginning to land on the rippling water for the night. I saw a flock of Canadian geese glide onto the rippling, silver coated lake and gracefully land. The goose took his time, but eventually, in a swift bound, swam off into the water. My dad explained that he must of have just been dehydrated and fell back from his flock. So there we stood for a good while and watched the goose rejoin the others. I smiled at my parents and felt a sense of relief that the goose was ok and remembered all the times in my child-hood when moments like this had come into my life. Sometimes everyone just needs a little help to get where they are going, even the squirrels that get hurt and Canadian geese that get thrown off course. We just have to make sure there is someone to help when that moment comes. I smiled at my dad and thanked him for helping me, just like he had always done. He looked over at my mom, and grinned. “I went and found the box and gloves the first time you called,” he said laughing.

How’s it going?? My name is Ziggy! I am pretty easy to pick out because as soon as you sit down I am RIGHT there wanting to cuddle. But don’t let all the cuddling fool you, I also love to spend my days playing with other cats.

Hey guys! My name is Voodoo and I am 2yrs old. I am the most handsome of all my feline friends, but luckily none of my buddies hold it against me. I can

sometimes play too rough with my friends, so I would be best at a home with children over the age of 10 years.

Why hello! I am Lily, and I am as pretty as the flower! I am a very playful young girl and I get along with

most other cats. I would be great in a family with kids because I am very gentle. I would love a home where I can run around and play with friends!

My name is Banjo and I am a beautiful Husky X with one blue eye. I am sometimes a bit reserved and shy, so I need a family with the time to teach me

about the things I’ve never had an opportunity to experience yet. Everything is so new! I have so much potential and it’s hard not to fall in love with me. Oh and I should also mention I lovelovelove my stuffies!!!

Hello, my name is Carson and I am 8yrs old. I am your forever and ever, always loving, sofa cat. My ideal house would have no other animals, so I can have you all to myself! I am also declawed, so I must stay inside at all times!

My name is Cathy…and this is Bailey! We are the greatest of friends and are both very playful. We also love

our treats! We don’t have to go to a home together, but we are happiest when other cats are around!

Are you looking for a big fluffy cuddle bug? If you are, then I’m your man! My name is Cadotte! I’m around 3yrs old, housetrained and know a ton of tricks. I love it when you brush my puffy soft fur and will give you a “kiss” by touching my nose

to yours. I love going for walks and always go around the puddles, never through them. I do need to be an only pet though, mainly because I want and need all of your love! Did I mention that I’m housetrained? BONUS!

My name is Max and I’m a gorgeous Lab X with amber eyes. I’m a high energy boy who loves to go for runs...I would love to have a running partner! I would do well if given a job as I learn new things very quickly and love to please.

Hello; I am Hannah. My siblings and I were born outside. We are living at a great foster home and we really like people now! We love to snuggle up and purr a lot. We even have adventures around the house and don’t try to hide at all any more! Our foster family loves us so much and will

be really sad to see us go, but they know we are all ready for new homes. The McDonald Animal Rescue has a special deal if you want to adopt more than one kitten!

Cooo Cooo! It’s Vida and Mira again. We are still here, wonder-ing why no one wants to add us to their family. We are both darling

young girls, so you’ll never have to worry about any unwanted offspring. We will soothe you with our lovely voices and although we are not finger tame, we both have very gentle natures. We would never dream of biting you! If you have a large enough cage, we would love to come live with you; you can even let us out now and again. We are so easy to get along with. We may be a little messy, but what do you expect...we’re birds!

My name is Phoebe and I’m 5 months old. Geor-gia is my sister and we came from the Beaumont pound. I live to play, and I’m extremely well social-ized and brave. I get along fine with two other dogs (including a Dober-

man) and another adult cat in my foster home. I am very adaptable, but I would love to be adopted with my sister for companionship.

My name is Georgia and I’m simply gorgeous! I am a 5 month old, super, duper sweet girl. Phoebe is my sister and we are looking for a new home together if possible. I am good with dogs, cats and people; I consider everyone my friend. I love to play and I’m always having fun! If you are looking for a beautiful pair of kittens, we might just be the ones for you!

Hey, Copper here. I am a Coonhound X around 18 months old. I’m looking for a home where there is some-one home most of the time because I’m not big on being crated. I need plenty of exercise because I have lots of

energy. I am housetrained and love hanging out with my people indoors.

Hey I might be little but I’m FULL of personality! My name is Tarka and I’m only 12 weeks old but I have lots of confidence and love everyone. I just love playing with other dogs, any size will do. I am a pretty brindle color

and hope to start the New Year out right in my forever home.

I’m a big furry guy named Guss. I am 8yrs old and declawed. Though I’m a little uneasy in new situa-tions, I soon settle in and show my affectionate and cuddly side! I’m an ideal lap cat in good health and would be most comfortable as the only cat in your home. I can’t wait to meet you!

Hi! My name is Helen and I’m 3yrs old. I am initially shy in new situations, but after a few days in a trusting home I turn into quite the cuddle bug! I love to play

and can’t wait to show you how I jump into the air to catch treats in my mouth. I get along well with other cats though I can be a bit pushy at first. My ideal home would always have plenty of cuddles and a full dish of food!

Hi. My name is Fluffy and I am a beautiful, 10yr old, declawed, sweetheart. The markings on my body are perfectly symmetrical with white mittens on my front feet and

white socks on my back! I am very easy going but I would love the peacefulness of a quiet home, ideally without children and in time for the holidays. I’m in great health and I know I would make a great, cuddly companion!

Hi, my name is Serene and I’m a beautiful 3-4yr old girl. I have a gorgeous sleek, shiny black coat and absolutely stunning green eyes. I came from the Beaumont pound in hopes of finding a great home. I love to rub up against your legs and get lots of cuddles.

Hi there my name is Bear but I’m not scary, just soft and cuddly. I really should be called Teddy Bear! I am glad to be in foster care because in my previous home my brother was

bullying me. Now I’m much happier and I’m learning how to be an inside dog (which I love by the way). I adore playing with other dogs and I’m really good with children of all ages. I’m used to cats too. My foster mom says I will make some lucky family a really good family pet…could that be you?

My name is Gracie and I’m a Dachshund/Beagle X. I am in foster care because the baby in my previous home was aller-gic. I am house and crate trained, well behaved indoors, love to play with other dogs and I’m used

to children. I might be small but I have a big personality! I’m 7yrs old but I have lots of life left in me yet!!

Hello my name is Jinx. I am a tall, handsome, Lab X who loves to give sloppy kisses and big puppy hugs. I’m 2yrs old, and despite my somewhat ominous name, I don’t bring bad luck! In fact, I am a very friendly boy who really aims to please. I am a social butterfly and although I like cats, I do chase them so I would fit best in a feline free home. I like regular exercise and think that I would benefit from a course of obedience classes. I could be an “A” student, I am very smart!

My name is Tess and I am a Collie X around 1yr old. I was busy rearing a litter of puppies, but now I am all set to start a new life with people who will love me, take care of me, and teach me how to be the best dog I can be. I will do really well in obedience classes because I listen well and I want to make my people proud. I get along with dogs, cats and children alike. I have a neat trick of climbing chain link fencing so I will need a yard with a high wooden fence. I’m sure once I am settled in a new home where I belong I won’t want to escape. I am not hyper but I will need regular exercise to keep me happy. I bet I would be good at agility too!

They call me Princess Pola but I don’t have any airs or graces. I’m a calm, well behaved and quiet, girl who

just loves to be loved. I am used to children, house and crate trained, very patient and not a big barker. All I want is a warm home and lots of love. My foster mom says I need to lose some weight so I’m looking for a home where I will get regular walks and not too many treats! Luckily I like carrots and that’s non-fat-tening! Please give me a chance to complete your family.

I’m a young, gentle, eager to please, Labrador Retriever. I will need some train-ing but I learn really quick. I was a stray and came from the pound, but now

I’m having a great time in my foster home playing with all my foster brothers and sisters. Please consider adding me to your family, you will not be disappointed!

Aries: March 21 - April 19This is a good and prosperous month for Aries. Luck is on your side so hit the slots, buy a lotto ticket or try your luck

getting into the pantry! Bet BIG, your cash cow could be just around the corner!

With daylight waning as we head into winter weather, romps outside may get shorter. Rest easy and take the

good with the bad, this will also mean more snuggle time with your two-leggers!

You might feel unmotivated to do so, but you should really try to broaden your horizons. Ferret out new hobbies and

activities that hold your interest...you may even meet new friends bitten by the same bug!

Cancer pets are all about the moon, and you will be in all your glory when the full moon comes around the 12th. Keep

your cool and don’t get too rowdy, decisions you make now may not seem so wise later.

Now might be a good time to learn how to give by getting involved in some sort of charitable or humanitarian efforts.

Giving of yourself tends to help make the future appear crystal clear!

Your love for treats could have you in trouble this month. Be mindful of your two leggers, they are used to typical

Virgo pets who tend to be neat and tidy...now’s not the time to break the mold!

Cancer: June 21 - July 22

Leo: July 23 - August 22

Virgo: August 23 - September 22

Merry Christmas to you Scorpio! This season will bring you precious rest and a nice peaceful family holiday. Bury your

bone in the couch, snuggle up to your people and watch for scraps of Turkey!

Take in the festivities and enjoy all the family and extra attention. Be good, mind your manners and pull out all of

your special ‘I love you’ and ‘ look at me’ cute acts. Your pack will be happy as a box of birds!

Tobogganing, winter romps in the woods and snow angels with the kids will fill many of the Capricorn canine’s days

this holiday season. However some pocket pets tend to feel neglected. Remember it’s just a busy time and not to take it personally!

Don’t do it Aquarians!!! No stealing holiday goodies like chocolates or raisins, or chomping on Poinsettias –so many

things around this time of year can be toxic to your little systems. Stick to your regular diet to avoid potentially serious problems...

Taurus: April 20 - May 20

Gemini: May 21 - June 20

This month will bring colder evenings, so all of you Pisces with scales should find a warm rock, secure aquarium and

warm hands to snuggle in. Remind your people to watch for drafts and make sure you get some sun!

Scorpio: October 23 - November 21

Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21

Capricorn: December 22 - January 19

Aquarius: January 20 - February 18

Pisces: February 19- March 20

You may find your New Year resolutions a bit overwhelming, so be sure to keep it all in perspective and kick it in into

high gear anyways. After all if you’re waiting for others to change your life, you might as well be waiting for pigs to fly!

Libra: September 23 - October 22

HoroscopesWhat’s In The Stars For Your Pets This Month?

Congratulations goes out to Deb Kardash for becoming Pet Rescue Magazine’s Honorary Volunteer for 2008!

We received the letter below from Deb’s kids telling us why they nominated her for the award.

Hey Pet Rescue! Our names are Sara, Mary, and Noah. Our family does dog rescue with Second Chance Animal Rescue Society and we would nominate our Mom - Debbie Kardash - for being so involved with the dogs and still managing to get us to school on time!

Being a foster home can be one of the most amazing things yet it can be really sad too. We have seen puppies being born and dogs being put down, dogs in life threaten-ing situations and many that get adopted

Pet Rescue Magazine’s2008

Honorary Volunteer

Deb Kardash above (with her children) will receive a digital painting of her favourite pet. Hmmm. looks like it’s going to be a tough choice!

to the greatest homes. Our Mom can be described as many things such as Super Mom or The Dog Lady of Terrace Heights. She will do anything for a dog in need and is sooo loving, caring, friendly, and knows how to pick the right home for any foster dog.

If you met our Mom you would know that after 15min. of talking to her she is an animal person and is very passionate about what she does. Our Mom would never change a thing that she does every day and we are sooo proud of her. We have been a foster home for SCARS for about 2 years and love every dog that comes through our home.

Mom is a foster home manager which means that she screens all the calls of her foster homes dogs, she also makes sure that every dog has what they need, she takes about 20-30 hours per week to care for the dogs, and out of everything she still gets us where we need to be. We are nominating our Mom for all of the work she does with the dogs.

Sincerely,

Sara, Mary & Noah

My name is Tucker! I am a little man with personality plus. I am good on the leash but not so great off leash and not too much road sense either. I am great with other

dogs, curious about the cat and would prefer an adult only home. I am kennel and house trained. I love to lie behind my people, on top of the couch, behind their heads where I can guard them from the other dogs. Sometimes I think I was really supposed to be a Bull Mastiff or something!

My name is Duke and I am a Lab/Collie X. I weigh around 65lbs and I am great on and off leash. I also know some of my basic commands and have great recall. I am not

good with cats or other small animals...I kind of think they are food. I love attention, love to snuggle...and just can’t get close enough! If you are looking for a mild mannered, friendly, loyal companion give us a call.

Everyone calls me Kane. I am a 2yr old, well behaved Cattle Dog X. I’m potty trained and know all my basic commands. I am good with other dogs and cats, and

have lived with small children as well. I was returned because my family’s personal situa-tion changed. I’ll tell you more about myself really soon...just call SHARES today please!!!

Ranger is the name and learning is my game! I am a 7 month old, Collie X and weigh in around 60lbs. I am an extremely affectionate and sweet natured puppy. I am already potty trained, know how to sit, ride well in the car, and go to doggy daycare everyday to practice my socializing skills. My foster mom works hard with me every day and I have even done some work with a Certified Education Trainer! I am smart, eager to please and learn very quickly. I need a home that will continue all of this great training with me and promise to be worth every ounce of effort.
