Happy greetings to you and your family—and thank you for your ongoing support! As the heat of the summer draws us inside, we have the opportunity to reflect on the year gone by—and what an historic year it has been!

The signature event of our 2018 Lourie Center calendar was the passing of our last surviving founder, Dr. T.B. Brazelton, at 99 years old. Last March, we joined “Berry’s” family at his Harvard Touchpoints Center in Boston to celebrate this champion for children. How pleased he was to track The Lourie Center’s expansion of services, even into 2018! When he last visited our Rockville, Maryland campus a few years ago, he was at ease interacting with children in the classrooms, presenting and connecting to our staff, encouraging the research, and cheering us on in the spirit of service. He delighted in seeing the manifestation of his labor, more than three decades prior, to support transformational change for children and families, especially those with less access to care.

We will always remember his generosity of spirit, brilliance in understanding and in teaching early childhood development, and—just like with another of our founders Dr. Reginald S. Lourie—his sheer love of children and all those who care for them.

We are pleased to share this report in gratitude for and in memory of our dear friend, colleague, and founder. May his bright smile and commitment to children and families inspire us onward as we continue to fulfill our mission.

In great gratitude to one and all,

Jimmy Venza, PhD Licensed Psychologist Executive Director

Prince George’s County ProgramsIn September, The Lourie Center was selected by the Office of Head Start to provide Early Head Start (EHS) and Head Start programs to more families in central and northern Prince George’s County. The center has operated EHS programs in Montgomery and parts of Prince George’s County for 20 years. Now, after being awarded a five-year, $14.9 million grant, The Lourie Center will be able to serve an additional 200 children and their families.

SERVICESThe Lourie Center provides critical educational and therapeutic services to more than 4,000 children birth to 12 and their families across the greater Washington, D.C. region.

Rockville Campus Expansion to Serve More Children and FamiliesGenerous donations from the Bainum Family Foundation, Alexander & Margaret Stewart Trust, the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation and others will support an expansion of The Lourie Center’s Rockville site in 2019. The expansion will provide The Lourie Center with an additional 16,000 square feet of space to serve 90 more families in its Lourie Center School and Parent-Child Clinical Services Program.

The expansion will include two classrooms, four new therapy playrooms, a state-of-the-art media and learning center, and a multimedia platform for research and training. The Lourie Center home will be a combined space of 37,000 square feet at the Rockville site.

In the first year alone, the expansion will enable us to care for more than 75 children currently on the wait list to receive outpatient mental health services and will add 15 students to our therapeutic K–5 school, expanding capacity from 50 to 65 students. Over a decade, The Lourie Center will serve more than 750 children and their families through its educational and clinical services that it cannot do without this expansion.

TRAINING, EDUCATION AND CONSULTATION We provide evidenced-based training, education and consultation in infant and early childhood development and mental health for parents, providers and policymakers.

Worldwide Leader in Mental Health Comes to Town

The Lourie Center hosted Dr. Peter Fonagy on March 16 to help strengthen the Lourie Center’s expertise in early childhood mental health care, specifically focused on a therapeutic approach called “mentalization.” Dr. Fonagy is the chief executive of the Anna Freud National Centre for

Children & Families, Professor of Contemporary Psychoanalysis and Developmental Science and Head of the Research Department of Clinical, Educational, and Health Psychology at University College London.

More than 110 members of The Lourie Center team and several community members attended the event, which was held at the Universities at Shady Grove Crockett Theater.

Dr. Fonagy holds professorships at Baylor College of Medicine, Yale and Harvard Medical Schools. His research in early development and attachment has positively influenced social policy in early childcare, adoption, and mental healthcare with more than 500 scientific papers, 260 chapters, and 19 co-authored books. He is a visionary educator, clinician, and researcher dedicated to improving the development of the human family.

Dr. Fonagy’s visit brought The Lourie Center together with the Anna Freud Center to explore ways to advance the field of early development, particularly around trauma and attachment-based work.

Sharing Best Practices in Early Childhood Mental Health & EducationLast spring, The Lourie Center and Adventist HealthCare Behavioral Health & Wellness Services (now part of Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center) hosted a symposium titled “Securing Relationships Through Reflection & Interaction: Transformational Growth in the Face of Early Childhood Adversity” at the Hyatt Regency Bethesda.

The symposium featured leading clinicians and researchers in infant and early childhood mental health, including keynote speaker Dr. Arietta Slade of the Yale Child Study Center and Dr. Neil Boris of the Circle of Security.

Participants learned about how best to support caregivers and children facing adverse early childhood experiences. Several attachment-based intervention models were presented including Minding the Baby, Attachment Bio-Behavioral Catchup, Circle of Security, and the Therapeutic Nursery Program. These programs are critical in helping transform the lives of young children and their families.

The Lourie Center strives to be a national leader in research to advance science and treatment in infant and early childhood mental health and education, with a particular focus on how trauma impacts learning and development.

Improving Care for Parents and Children through ResearchResearch by Lourie Center clinicians Drs. Jimmy Venza, Kristen Capps, and Stephanie Olarte and University of Haifa professor Dr. Yair Ziv was published in a special edition of Attachment & Human Development, a highly regarded journal in child and family development. The research included a four year span of The Lourie Center’s Therapeutic Nursery Program (TNP). The Lourie Center is grateful to all of our TNP families, children and staff who volunteered to participate in the study.

The article is titled “Early Childhood Trauma in High-risk Families: Associations with Caregiver Emotional Availability and Insightfulness, and Children’s Social Information Processing and Social Behavior.”

Also in this edition of the journal were featured articles from leading researchers around the world to examine the construct of insightfulness, which focuses on the parents’ ability to reflect on the thoughts, feelings and intentions of their children.

Insightfulness is thought to be a key developmental achievement that helps children and parents be successful: at school, at work, and in relationships. This concept is also pivotal to helping clinicians design more effective intervention programs that support parenting and children’s learning, especially when facing early traumatic experiences.

Helping the Nation’s Educators Cope with TraumaThe Lourie Center’s Therapeutic Nursery Program team led a workshop on Transforming Trauma in Preschool at the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s (NAEYC) conference last fall in Washington, D.C.

An overflow crowd of childcare providers and administrators actively engaged in sharing experiences and learning strategies from The Lourie Center’s intervention-based Therapeutic Nursery Program to improve their own work with young children.

The Therapeutic Nursery Program research was also showcased during a poster presentation at the conference.

Third Annual Little Heroes’ Parade & Fair

More than 300 little heroes and their parents, friends and supporters attended the Lourie Center’s third annual Little Heroes’ Parade & Fair on October 6 at Veterans Plaza in downtown Silver Spring, Md. This year’s Grand Marshal, Dr. Carol Weyland Conner, led the parade and welcomed the children and

families with these words:

“The achievements of the Lourie Center during the last year are remarkable and merit all of our enthusiasm as we parade around the plaza and zestfully cheer on the new school year, which will include a significant expansion of The Lourie Center to double the number of worthy children they will reach.
