    This program specifically prepares teachers for the diversity oflanguages and cultures often encountered in California's publicclassrooms. The program prepares candidates to address theneeds of students who speak English as a native language and/oras a second language in the elementary school setting.

    An underlying principle of the program is the belief that allchildren (regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, ability oreconomic status) are capable of learning. Emphasis is placedon the K-8 student as actively engaged in his/her learning.

    REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO THE MULTIPLESUBJECT TEACHING CREDENTIAL PROGRAM)

    I. U.S. Constitution. Knowledge of the U.S. Constitutiondemonstrated by co~letion of a two semester-units of acollege level course or college-level examination.

    2. Grade Point Average. A student must have a cumllative~e point average (GPA) of 2.75 to be accepted into theMultiple Subject credential program offered at CSUCI. Ifyou do not have the required GPA, conditional admissionmay be available on a limited basis.

    3. Health Oearance. Tuberculin clearance is required. Thetuberculin cl~ce is valid for four (4) years and must bevalid through student teaching. The tuberculin clearancenmy be co~leted at a private physician's office, dieCounty Health Department, or the CSUCI Student HealthCenter.

    4. Certificate of Oearance. Students must possess or applyfor a valid Certificate of C1eaIWIce as part of admission tothe Teaching Credential Program. A copy of an emergencycredential satisfies the clearance requ~ment

    5. Two Sets of Official Transcripts. One official set oftranscripts from each of the colleges or universitiesattended must be mailed directly to the CSU ChannelIslands Office of Admissions, and one official set oftranscripts must be submitted to the Education ProgramStudent Services Center with the program application.

    6. Two Lelters of Recommendation. Two letters of .recorrunendation from faculty, employers, and/or otherswho ~ knowledgeable about the student's personalqUalities and potential to work with children must besubmitted with the program application.

    7. Interview. An interview conducted by an EducationProgram Admissions Committee

    8. At least 45 hours documented field experience in a K-8classroom or a documented field experience deemed

    equivalent9. Bachelor 's Degree. A bachelor's degree or all

    undergniduate academic subjects must be satisfied to\vard abachelor's degree before entering a teacher educationprogram. A bachelor's degree is a requirement for teacher

    certification.10. Writing Sample. Writing s~les ~ required as part of the

    application process.Please Note: The California Convmssion on TeacherCredentialing requires passing the Reading blstructionCompetence Assessment (RICA) for the initial issuance of aMultiple Subject Credential. RICA consists of passing one oftwo co~onents, either a comprehensive examination or aperformance assessment The Assessment CBDnot be takenuntil completion of the Uteracy I and Literacy n courses in

    tbe credential program.

    The following are admission requirements to the Multiple SubjectTeaching Credential Program.

    Application. Application to both the University and theEducation Program Area.

    CBEST Examination. Students nUlst take the California BasicEducational Skills Test (CBEST) prior to admissionto the Multiple Subject Teacher Credential Program.Students are urged to take this examination at theearliest possible time after deciding to pursue ateaching credential. CBEST must be passed bef~certification or intern teaching.

    Subject Matter ~aratioo. The CSU Cbannellslands LiberalStudies Option 3 - Teaching and Learning bestprepares students for the subject matter knowledgeand skills required for the Multiple Subject TeachingCredential Program. Prior to admission to the CSU

    Cbannellslands Multiple Subject TeachingCredential Program, students may also ~Iete astate-approved subject matter program from othercolleges or universities. Students who have not~Ieted a state-approved subject matter programmust take the Multiple Subjects Assessment forTeachers (MSA 1) prior to admissions to theMulfiple Subject Credential Program. Theexamination includes Content Knowledge andContent Area Exercises. The MSA T examinationresults are valid for five years ftom the date ofpassing and nUlst be valid upon final co~letion ofthe program.

    Observation and- teaching in selected schoorsunder the supervision of classroom teacher andUniversity supervisor, with a student teachingseminar.

    Students learn to apply techniques andmaterials to teaching mathematics in elementaryand middle schools. Special attention will begiven to mathematical reasoning, problemsolving skills, multiple representations andapproaches including verbal, symbolic, graphic.Modem methods, including mathematicalmodeling, use of new technology and modemeducational software will be stressed. Needs ofEnglish Language Learners and exceptionalchildren, technology for teaching and learning isintegrated.

    EDUC 561 Student Teaching Seminar (1)Weekly Meetings to discuss observations andteaching practice during the student teachingexperience.Prerequisite: Must be officially admitted to theMultiple Subject Credential Program.
