Compassion
Summary
An experiential work-
shop where the par-
ticipant has the op-
portunity to explore
mindfulness and
compassion
Sat 28th February
2015 l
Venue: Maldron
Hotel, Wexford www.maldronhotelwexford.com

participants: 50
Speaker:
Josephine Quinlan
Overview:
This will be an experiential workshop where the participant
has the opportunity to explore mindfulness and compassion.
In a recent lecture, Jon Kabat-Zinn describes mindfulness as
‘presence of heart’. He reminds us of the importance of culti-
vating mindfulness skills in order to respond to our pain and
discomfort in a new way; with more compassion and friendli-
ness towards the pain.
Recent research in compassion indicates that this ‘new’ re-
sponse to self can develop healthy coping skills, motivation
and robustness to face life’s difficulties. Compassion skills
which include kindness, common humanity and mindfulness
can be a strong antidote for self-criticism, the tendency to iso-
late or become self-absorbed. This workshop can open the
door for participants to experience and cultivate their own
personal reservoir of compassion and offer inspiration in find-
ing ways to bring new skills into their own therapeutic en-
counters and practice. The workshop will incorporate the
work of the leading practioners in the field of Mindful Com-
passion, including Christopher Germer, Kristin Neff and Paul
Gilbert.
About the Speaker
Josephine Quinlan has an MA in Integrative & Humanistic
Psychotherapy together with a Diploma in Counselling. Her
primary training was as a registered nurse. Josephine has
worked in a variety of settings and environments including the
prison service, with people bereaved by suicide and currently
in substance misuse. Over the past ten years Josephine has
explored and practiced mindfulness. She is interested in the
growing wealth of research in mindfulness which in recent
years has led her to the exciting and fascinating power of
compassion, as both a personal and therapeutic tool for
healing.

Overview:
The day will provide a combination of theory and practical ap-
plication. A specific skill set is required of relationship thera-
pists and there will be plenty of opportunities throughout the
day to practice applying this skill set.. By the end of the day,
participants will have an awareness and basic understanding
of the following issues:
Background to Relationship Counselling
Types of Relationship Counselling
Therapeutic Orientation and Skill Set
Common Relationship Issues
Factors that Contribute to Healthy Relationships
Factors that Contribute to Separation and Divorce
Key Aspects of Relationship Counselling
About the Speaker
Sylvia brings a wealth of general counselling experience
spanning more than 20 years to her workshops, but over the
past 8 years she has focused more strongly on relationship
counselling. She trained to work with couples through AC-
CORD in Ireland, and sees couples within that organization
as well as privately through her practice at Dove House Re-
treat in County Mayo. When working with couples she utilis-
es a range of skills including person centred art therapy, and

Speaker:
Eimear O’ Neill
Overview
When working systemically the central focus is on the system
not the individual. Therapists are working with families to un-
derstand the pattern of behaviours, their beliefs and stories
that have developed over time in their family system and in
the wider context in which they live.
This workshop aims to give an introduction to Systemic family
therapy by:
Exploring the history of family therapy and putting this into
an Irish context.
Looking at some key concepts in systemic therapy.
Exploring the impact of Social Graces (an acronym that
refers to a range of social differences) on the therapeutic
relationship.
Demonstrating how to use a family Genogram in a thera-
peutic conversation. Genograms can be a useful tool in
therapy to track family history and relationships.
About the Speaker
Eimear has an MSC in Systemic family therapy and graduat-
ed from Mater and UCD in 2013. She currently works for
Console as a centre manager and family therapist. She has
been with Console (who works with families, individuals and
children bereaved by suicide) since 2008. Emer has a BA in
applied social studies and spent 8 years working and manag-
ing children in residential care with emotional and behavioural
problems.

Chrristine Beekman
Overview
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) was devel-
oped by Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale,
based on Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduc-
tion program and is designed to support people who suffer
from mood disorders and chronic unhappiness. Initially con-
ceived as an intervention for relapse prevention in people
with recurrent depression, it has since been applied to vari-
ous psychiatric conditions. MBCT combines the ideas of cog-
nitive therapy with newer psychological strategies such as
mindfulness-based stress reduction practices and mindful-
ness meditation.
The therapeutic stance of MBCT focuses on encouraging cli-
ents to adopt a new way of relating to thoughts, feelings and
behaviours. This stance of MBCT will be examined and prac-
tical exercises considered in the context of supporting clients’
notice their own negative automatic processes and to reflect
on them in a non- judgmental manner.
