Towards the end of last year, the National Transport Authority (NTA) held the inaugural Transport for Ireland People’s Awards, which are designed to cele- brate and reward the superstars of buses, trams, trains, taxis, walking and cycling. Michael Leahy, who is the eldest of four boys and a girl, attends Prosper Fingal Day Service in Swords, an umbrella group for people with intellectual disabilities. He has a lifelong passion for all things related to trans- port, and was recognised as Ireland’s ‘Public Transport Ambassador. His mother, Rene told the County Leader about her reason for nominating her son. “Michael has had a passion for transport from a very young age and I thought he would fit the profile. His interest started with Thomas the Tank Engine, Fireman Sam, and this interest in transport continues to this day. He has the brio wooden train collection and we also visited Legoland, where he loved the trains there. Every year, his father, Eamonn brings him to York, to visit one of the largest train museums in Europe, as well as to Cooltra near Belfast, where there’s a large transport museum. Such is Michael’s passion for all things transport, that he has a room at home converted to accommodate his amazing collection of model trains, buses and aero- planes. He is very proud of this collection of transport memorabilia, which was lovingly collected over the years. Every day, weather permitting, Michael walks from home in Malahide to his Day Centre in Swords. Here he has won competitions for his artwork, which naturally enough, are all transport related. Michael said that he was very proud and delighted to have been chosen for this award and would love to have his own rail company someday. Rene continued, “Michael tries to persuade us all to change to public transport. He goes on two train trips a year with his dad. Recently, with the help of Prosper Fingal, he set up a walking group. He also spear- headed a DVD on the Hill of Howth tram, where he interviewed people working in the transport museum. Michael said that he hopes to see this tram service being restored some day. The Dublin Metropolitan Region (North Division) covers the Ballymun, Coolock and Balbriggan Garda Districts. All garda stations in the North County, including Malahide, Lusk and Swords are attached to this division. This news drew an angry response from Chairperson of North Dublin Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Force, Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF), who told the County Leader, “One of the most important elements in the fight against drugs, is to cut off the supply into our communities. You can’t do that if you’re systematically taking gardaí away from tackling the problem. Under Fine Gael and Labour’s time in Government, there has been a consistent pattern of cuts to frontline services. Community policing and tack- ling drug crime have simply not been priorities for this government. This dramatic reduction is totally unacceptable,” he said. “Unfortunately the North County area has one of the highest levels of drug misuse in the country. This govern- ment is hampering the ability of frontline gardaí to do their jobs in stopping the flow of drugs into our communities, but it is also tying the hands of drug task forces, by under-resourcing them in a serious way.” O’Brien continued, “One of the major problems in the fight against drugs and drug crime is the lack of a dedicated Minister for this area. This was a policy area Fianna Fáil put significant work and emphasis into over many years. By having a dedi- cated Minister for Drugs, we were able to make significant progress which, unfortunately has not been continued by this government.” “As Chair of the North Dublin Regional Drugs and Alcohol Taskforce, I see first-hand the failure to properly resource prevention, policing and cure. We are the worst resourced regional drugs taskforce in the country facing an uphill battle in the fight against drugs and we are losing this fight,” concluded O’Brien. The crisis which is being experienced by North Dublin Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Force, based in Swords, has been exacerbated by news that there are now only 16 gardaí attached to the Dublin Metropolitan Region (DMR) North divi- sional drug units. In a strongly worded statement, the chair of North Dublin Regional Drug and Alcohol Task Force, senator Darragh O’Brien (FF), has called for equity of resources for families in crisis in the area. He told the County Leader, “We opened the North Dublin Community Care Service in Swords in June last year to support children, individuals and families trying to cope with the stress of alcohol and drug use. This was the first service of its type in this area, so we knew there would be a huge demand,” he said. This area is completely under resourced compared to other Drug and Alcohol Task Force areas, and is the most under- resourced one of it’s kind in the entire country, according to O’Brien. “It is simply unjust that residents of North County Dublin don’t have the same access to supports as people who live in other areas. Other areas like the North City and West Dublin, or our counterparts on the southside of Dublin, have a range of HSE funded community based services, in addition to the services funded by their respective task forces. There has been little or no investment in this area at all until the new Community Care Service wqas opened , which a huge number of people from the area have already benefited from.” O’Brien went on to stress the impact the service has had on the local community in the short time it has been in existence. “Nearly 250 individuals and families have accessed the service in the six months it has been open. With such a small team of practitioners, this means we are now operating a waiting list. We have lodged an application to the HSE for two case workers last year, but still have not received a decision. The acquisition of these two case workers would make such a difference,” said O’Brien. Aer Lingus Sale LikelyDespite Ryan MotionThe Labour Party hasoverwhelmingly passeda motion calling on theGovernment to reject abid by the IAG for sharesin Aer Lingus, if concernsabout the sale are notaddressed. The motion, which wasproposed by local TD,Brendan Ryan waspassed at the party’snational convention lastweekend. It’s memberswant guaran-tees on thefuture of AerLingus beforeany sale ofState shares inthe airline cantake place, saying theobjection to the currentdeal was “not out ofpolitical self interest, butbecause it is a baddeal.”However, despite thevote at the nationalconvention, the feelingis that the sale will

proceed, with seniorLabour party representa-tives saying that the‘conditions are alldeliverable.’ AerLingus represen-tatives also believe thatthe sale is still likely, and that IAG is likely tomake a new bid, takinginto account theconcerns from all sides. The sale is also favouredby Aer Lingus Chief

Executive desig-nate, StephenKavanagh. The beliefamong partyleaders is thatopposition tothe sale hassoftened and

that the party is likely toagree to the deal. This isin light of Mr Walsh’spromise of expansion atAer Lingus, which hasled to the change ofheart.Despite this weakeningof opposition to the

deal, Ryan said at theconvention: “We havenot heard any valid

reason for example whyIAG cannot purchase theother 75 per cent of thecompany and work withthe Irish State. We willnot risk the future of theairline and its workers,”he said. The motion, which wassigned by eight TDs,expresses concern thatthe bid by IAG does not

reflect the true value ofAer Lingus. It calls for anindependent valuationof the company’s assetsand its slots at London’sHeathrow Airport.Former chief executive ofAer Lingus and head ofIAG, Willie Walsh is dueto meet unions at theairline this week, amidreports IAG will make animproved offer for theState’s shareholding. It is understood themeeting will take placeon Friday, with represen-tatives of ICTU, IMPACTand SIPTU, amongunions expected toattend. Representativesfrom Aer Lingusmanagement are alsoexpected to attend themeeting.

Trade Union AndDAA At LoggerheadsOver PensionsTrade union Siptu has alleged that members ofit’s Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) pensionscommittee are being hampered by thecompany, in their efforts to engage in talkswith staff, before the deadline next month. Thisallegation has been flatly refuted by the DAA.A spokesperson for the company said; “Therelease of union representatives to engage inunion business is governed by DAA policies, which are in line with the Labour RelationsCode of practice insuch matters. Al lunion members, including those onthe Siptu Pension committee, must followthese procedures,” the spokesperson said. The defined benefit scheme has a deficit ofover €700 million when it was frozen on 31stDecember last year. The DAA has been trying tofinalise a resolution to it’s involvement in thetroubled Irish Airlines Superannuation Scheme(IASS). The DAA have agreed to invest €72million in a new separate defined contributionscheme, for both it’s active and deferredmembers. The company has given about 1,200staff a deadline of 15th March to accept a lumpsum for their new pension scheme. They weretold that if they did not, they would not beeligible for higher defined contributions fromthe company. Aer Lingus staff who weremembers of IASS, have already agreed to join anew defined contribution scheme, establishedby the airline, which stumped up almost €200million to establish the new scheme for activeand deferred members.

Former Aer LingusStaff To Take ActionAngry Aer Lingus andDAA pensioners are setto take legal action tochallenge the restruc-turing of their pensionscheme, that resulted intheir entitlements beingcut. If action is mountedagainst Aer Lingus, itwould amount toanother spanner in theworks for IAG in theirattempt to acquire AerLingus. The RetiredAviation StaffAssociation (RASA) saidthat it has asked it’s

solicitors to proceedwith court action. It isunderstood that RASAwill base at least part ofit’s challenge on aspectsof the restructuringprocess of the definedbenefit Irish AirlinesS u p e r a n n u a t i o nScheme (IASS). TheIASS serves almost15,000 former andcurrent workers at AerLingus and DAA and hasa massive deficitapproaching €800million.

Rush School’sCharity Video ForCancer ResearchSt Joseph’s Secondary School in Rush recentlyheld a charity lip-sync event, with all proceedsgoing to the Irish Cancer Society. It was an over-whelming success as over €700 was raised bythe team for cancer research.

Teacher, Mr Brennan facilitated the aforemen-tioned event, and the first year religion studentsin the school were tasked with the responsibilityof collaborating with one another in the organi-sation of this event. They had gained a valuableinsight into the great work the Irish CancerSociety does, and there was a real commitmentto assist them in this regard. Many creative ideas were put forward, but ulti-

mately the group decided to make a lip-syncvideo, which included a mix of hits from theseventies and eighties. The video was approvedby the school’s principal, Ms Hayden and theproduction team got to work. All staff andstudents were encouraged to get involved in themaking of the video, and their support andparticipation was second to none. The filming of the video generated a hugeamount of excitement throughout the schooland most seized the opportunity to dance andsing. The editing process allowed for a lull in

proceedings, as elevenminutes of bliss wasmashed together into amasterpiece worthwaiting for. The Irish CancerSociety sent supplies(collection boxes, t-shirts, balloons etc) toassist the team, as thefinishing touches wereapplied to the event. Allstaff/students in theschool were invited towatch the finishedproduct and generouslydonated at the door. MrBrennan spoke aboutthe great work of the

charity and he thanked the staff/students fortheir participation and generous donations. Sarah Russell, a first year student, made afantastic speech about community which waswell received by staff/students and certainly lefta long lasting impression. John McCormick,Chief Executive Officer of the Irish CancerSociety expressed thanks to the school commu-nity for all their hard work and dedication.

The meeting, which was held in St Maurs GAA club, was attended by a large section of traders, as well asSenator Darragh O’Brien and his Fianna Fail partycolleague, local councillor Brian Dennehy. The deterio-rating condition of the town’s main street is of greatconcern to business owners and has prompted them tocome together, to form a cohesive organisation toaddress problems in the area. These include derelict buildings, which are attracting fly tippingand the consequent presence ofrodents in the area. The meeting was spearheadedby Carmel Kerr, who has a busi-ness on main street and shespoke to the County Leaderabout the despair felt by tradersin the area. “My concern forRush is the amount of busi-nesses that are closing down, and the town is dying a death. Our priority is to get it back upand running. I love this town andI have only lived here for 12years. It was a vibrant town when I came here first, butunfortunately with rents and rates on the increase, people are struggling to keep their businesses open,”she said. Similarly, Sandra Sweetman said, “Our ownbusiness closed last month, due high rents and rates.I’m from Rush, having been born and bred here and wehave a beautiful, picturesque town, but I feel it hasbeen neglected over the past few years, with derelictbuildings on main street. This is a very serious matter, because we had a business here for nearly 60 years. We want to put Rush back on the map again, and this is

our second meeting, in an effort to put things right. I’malso concerned about dog fouling in the town. This is apopular tourist destination and we have to worktogether to sort this whole problem out and promotelocal shopping” she said.Senator O’Brien said, “The fundamental problem hereis the presence of many derelict buildings on the mainstreet. It’s having the effect of dragging down the mainstreet. Aldi are due to open a store here, which hasbeen welcomed by traders on the main street. Theinformation I have is that they are hoping to be on siteby September this year,” he said.“The traders on main street feel they have been

forgotten by the council, and our objective is to estab-lish a main street traders’ association, which can have adirect line to the local authority. Things like parkingmeters, which haven’t worked here, street cleaning, painting, flowers and general maintenance have beenneglected. What is needed is a plan for the main streetin Rush, to attract people to the centre of the town. There’s no longer a bank here, and locals now do theirbanking in Skerries, spending money there, whichshould be spent in Rush, thus boosting the localeconomy,” he said.

More AnglingAchievementsFor Rush Man A local man has had more success at a recentangling awards ceremony. At the specimen fishawards day last Saturday, Thomas Lynch from Rushreceived his 10 species engraved bronze medal, which that included specimentrout from the Cong River inCounty Mayo.He was awarded this prize fromthe Irish Specimen FishCommittee (ISFC) for hiscapture of 10 specimen. Theaward was presented to him atthe recent Irish SpecimenAwards Day. Thomas alsoreceived a similar prize last year(of a certificate and silver pin)for a similar achievement. To catch 10 specimen-sized fishalone is an excellent achieve-ment. Accordingto the IFSC, manyanglers can takemany years tocatch 10 speci-mens and somestruggle to catcheven one, so theRush man clearlyworked very hard

to catch 10. Thomas told the County Leader previ-ously that: “A lot of work goes into catchingSpecimen Fish; there’s a lot of specifics that goesinto that particular type of fish, so I was chuffed toget another 10 of them.” “These Specimen Fish are fish above a thresholdweight set by the ISFC which represent the biggerfish for that species,” he explained. “Anglers whocatch a specimen fish must weigh it and measuresits length before submitting it.” This seasonedangler, has been fishing since he was five years old, when his late father introduced him to the hobby.

“It’s always been just a hobby of mine, but some-thing that I really enjoy,” he continued. “I found itwas something I could do that I was good at, whichhelped as well!” he added.

Cumann Na mBanWomen were also active within nationalist move-ments and they had their own organisation knownas Cumann Na mBan which was influential andinvolved in the 1916 Rising. Founded in 1913 atthe same time as the Irish Volunteers, they playeda very important part in the Rising and in theensuing War of Independence. Many of thewomen who joined Cumann Na mBan had beenmembers of the Ladies Land League, after whichthey turned their attention and their skills to thecause of Irish freedom. The women of Fingal werenot found wanting in this regard. Records fromthe Bureau of Military History show a strongmembership all around Fingal. A small insight intothe activities of one such woman, will give you aflavour of the level of their importance.Thomasina Weston Lynders was a very activemember of Cumann Na mBan; she joined theorganisation at its inauguration in 1915. In EasterWeek, she acted as Intelligence liaison under thecommand of Thomas Ashe. She mobilised onEaster Sunday, making her way to Rathbealewhere she remained all day. She returned onEaster Monday when her duties included hermobilising volunteers who had not returned toKnocksedan. Other duties included, according toher own statement ‘keeping in touch withVolunteer camps, taking orders from Comdt.Thomas Ashe, associated actively as a unit inBattalion operations, in scouting, intelligencework, and in providing food and clothing etc.’She remained with the volunteers through Easterweek, assisted in dressing wounded from the

Battle of Ashbourne. She also assisted in theremoval and burial of the two Volunteers whodied at the battle. She collected information onmilitary and RIC movements, carried despatchesand directed volunteers to camps who wanted tojoin up. She hid weapons and also explosives andmoved guns around as directed. Michael McAllister who had gone on the runrather than surrender at the end of Easter Week, was hidden by Thomasina in her home for aperiod of nearly seven months. This was verydangerous for her as the authorities searched thearea for him and he had been listed in the policepaper ‘Hue and Cry’.After 1916, she continued her membership ofCumann na mBan, working in Central Office, although still under the auspices of the FingalBrigade. She assisted in organising a receptionfor returning prisoners, collected funds andcontinued to attend lectures and First Aid courses. She helped organisedances and flag days, andworked at election time. At this time, MichaelLynch was the Brigade Commander. Her brothers, Charlie and Bartle were active in theWar of Independence and her sister Julia was alsoa member of Cumann Na mBan. Both of thesewoman were subject to searches by the Black andTans, the Auxiliaries and the British Military.Thomasina died in 1962 having married JohnLynders with whom she ran a shop on NorthStreet, Swords. Without women such aThomasina, it is difficult to see how the FingalVolunteers would have operated.

Reilly’s Tobacco BillPassed In DáilThe determination ofMinister for Childrenand Youth Affairs toforge ahead with hisplans to introduceplain packaging fortobacco products, hasb e e nrewarded. HisBill waspassed in DailEireann lastweek and willgo before theSeanad for afinal vote onTuesday, 3rd March. The Bill has beenamended by AttorneyGeneral, MaireWhelan, in a movewhich is expected tomake the Bill evenstronger from a legalpoint of view. Dr Reillyexpects the Bill, afterbeing passed by theSeanad, to go beforethe President later thismonth, and he expectsthe plain packaging tobe in the shops by2017.The minister hasfended off strongopposition to the billfrom leading tobaccocompanies, who claimthat the measuresrepresent an infringe-ment of their propertyrights, and are abreach of EU singlemarket rules. He,however hasdismissed theseobjections and saidfirms were trying to‘intimidate theGovernment.’

Minister Reilly told theCounty Leader, “Fartoo many of our youngpeople in North CountyDublin are becomingtrapped into a killeraddiction - an addic-

tion that willkill one in twoof them. Weneed to doeverything wecan to preventour children inour area, fromever starting

to smoke. “Standardised pack-aging will transform acigarette box from ashiny, glitzy advertise-ment into a starkwarning about therealities of smoking -death from cancers, strokes and heartattacks - not tomention debilitatinglung disease andgangrene. He concluded, “Overmy three decades as adoctor in North CountyDublin, I’ve seen toomany of my fellowFingallians suffer anddie prematurelybecause theysmoked.”However, the PlainPackaging legislationis “deeply flawed”according tocampaigners.Spokesperson forsmokers’ group ForestEireann, John Malloncondemned themeasures and said,“This legislation is

deeply flawed. There’sno evidence plainpackaging will reduceyouth smoking rates.Packaging isn’tresponsible for chil-dren smoking, and It’smostly peer pressure, the influence of familymembers, or the factthat some children willalways want to experi-ment or rebel,” hesaid.“Putting cigarettes instandardised packs isyet another attempt todenormalise a legalproduct, stigmatisingthose who pay anenormous amount oftax to consume it. It’smorally wrong,” hesaid.Other opponents ofthe Bill include theNational Federation ofRetail Newsagents(NFRN) Ireland, whoexpressed theircontinuing concernsabout the implicationsof the Public Health( S t a n d a r d i s e dPackaging of Tobacco)Bill on the ill icittobacco trade.NFRN Ireland’s JoeSweeney said: “Therecent report andrecent revelationsfrom the British-IrishP a r l i a m e n t a r yAssembly have raisedalarming details aboutthe scale of involve-ment of para-militariesin the illicit tobaccotrade. Fianna Failleader Micheál Martin,

a former Minister forForeign Affairs, suggested this weekthat a “blind eye”might be being turnedto tobacco smugglingbecause of the peaceprocess. This is amost serious andalarming concern toretailers.“Just three weeks agoa cross-border raiduncovered a cigarettesmuggling operationworth an estimated€145 million, provingthat the criminal gangsin Ireland are as activeas ever,” he said.

Minister Reilly Local AnglersUrged ToMaintain LifeJacketsRecently, 84 per centof lifejackets broughtto RNLI life jacketclinic at AnglingIreland Show werefound to have safetyissues, so a local RNLIgroup has urgedanglers to keep theirsin top condition. Over 300 anglers fromall over the NorthCounty and beyondvisited the RNLI standfor lifesaving tips andsea safety advice, andto avail of the free life-jacket clinic. Out ofthe 37 lifejacketsbrought to the clinic,31 of them were foundto have safety issues.John McKenna,Coastal Safety Officerwith Howth RNLI toldthe County Leader: “Alifejacket is useless ifyou don’t wear it, butit’s also important tomaintain it properly.Three simple stepscould help to saveyour life - check thatthe gas canister is ingood condition andscrewed in properly, the firing head iswithin its expiry dateand that a crotchstrap is attachedsecurely,” he advised. As spring approachesmore people will soonbe taking to thewater. Last year wasthe busiest year everfor the local HowthRNLI which had 62launches and brought107 people to safety. It was the busiestcoastal lifeboatstation in Ireland in2014. “We wanteveryone around thelocality to enjoy thewater, but to respectit too. By maintainingand wearing a life-jacket properly, locally anglers andboat-users will givethemselves the bestpossible chance ofsurvival in the case ofan emergency,” headded.

‘Cotton Wool Kids,What’s Making IrishParents Paranoid’- A ReviewThe novel “CottonWool Kids, What’smaking Irish parentsparanoid?”, written byStella O’Malley, isabout the difficultiesfaced by parents inraising children in the21st century. It is not aparenting guide butrather more aconfrontation with allthe problems forparents and children.A very well written

book, with many expe-riences, because theauthor is a mother oftwo children and apsychotherapist. Shetells about her coun-sellors and their storiesbut also about her ownlife with her kids. In the past, it is said, you had only to raiseyour children but nowit has become“parenting”. Trying todo this new job, many

families are over-strained and thiscauses more problems.Parents get confusedbecause they alwayswant to be perfect andbecome “overparents”. Too oftenthis can lead to eatingdisorders, depressionsand youth suicide, the

author warns. Theauthor suggests thatparents should take it alittle bit easier anddare their children todo more. StellaO’Malley advises to dowhat you, as parents, think is right. Becausethat is the best, andnot what other peopleexpect you to do.She complains aboutthe way parents treattheir children, drivingthem to schoolbecause they are afraidthat they would beabducted or onlybecause of thedangerous traffic. But ifthey would teach theirchildren not to go with

strangers, the trafficrules and trust them alittle bit more, thatwouldn’t be anyproblem, in heropinion.

She goes on withthe fact that many

children hadforgotten how toplay without any

electrical devices.Another problem is,that children won’ttake risks or attemptsome exciting chal-lenges, which is veryimportant for theirlives, because of thisover parentingbecoming an issue. The ParentingManifesto in the end isvery interesting. Itsuggests that parentsshould “Allow yourkids to get bored” and“Bring nature backinto your family’s life.”

Q:

Well, I think it is a good Idea for dogs. But only fordogs. Because other animals like cats can look afterthemselves, much better than dogs.

Yes, because it means if they get lost, you can findthem more easily and they go straight back to theowner if they are found around the area.

Yes, they should be chipped! In case the dogs getlost or stray.

Leo Dalton, Dublin

First of all, for dogs it is a fantastic idea! There areso many stolen. And when they are stolen it is theonly way to get them back. But I wouldn't microchipcats, they can look after themselves and they arekept inside. For cattle or other animals you keepoutside, it might be a good idea as well.

Yes, cats and dogs should definitely be microchipped!

Yes, I love the idea! Because if they get lost, you willfind your animal so much easier, I suppose. With thechips you know who the pets belong to.

Yes, to stop them from going wild and for protection of the animals themselves too.

I don't think my cats don't get lost! We look after them andevery night they are inside and safe. My cats are also notvery trusting to strangers, so I'm quite sure that nobodywill get them.

Well, my dog is chipped. It simply means that you can findyour dog, just in case the dog gets lost. But yes, all otheranimals should be chipped. It would be very responsible. If I got a new animal, I would chip it anyway.

He has written to seniormanagement in the HSE asking them to prioritise thisarea, which has very clearly been abandoned fordecades in terms of resource allocation. He is callingfor equity of service provision. He explained, “It’s justso frustrating that there are literally children as youngas 14 needing help, whose families don’t know whereto turn. If they lived in a different area they would havea choice of supports. I don’t know why our area wasseen as less of a priority, and I am working hard withour community partners on the board of the task force,to make sure this is addressed urgently.” Despite theresource issues, O’Brien urges anyone who needshelp to contact the North Dublin Community CareService.
