    ISH-EVENT - Munish2019

  • Dear Athletes, Coaches and Supporters,

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the International School of The Hague, not only as our competitors but also as friends from near and far. We are proud of our teams, as just like yours, they have been training incredibly hard for this Championship and cannot wait to meet you, not only on the court but also off the court, afterwards to celebrate, no matter which side wins.

At our school, we aim to inspire personal excellence in all that we do. Over these days that you are with us, I am sure that you will also strive to achieve not only your personal but also your team bests and reach limits that you never thought you could achieve.

Volleyball is a hard and fast game and it takes firm courage to face the oncoming ball. It also takes complete focus and the ability to find that moment of inner quiet to get that perfect serve. But as we all know, nothing always goes to plan in the field of intense competition. It is then that self-respect and compassion towards ourselves and others are important to maintain to ensure fair-play on and off the court.

Please join me in thanking the ISH Athletics Department for their hard work organising the Championship, the ISH Parents Association for their support, the homestay families for opening up their homes, the coaches for their enthusiasm and hard work to get you to this level and of course your supporters, both here and at home.

    Go for it!

    Ben le Heux

    Vice Principal Experiential Learning

  • Dear Student-Athletes, Coaches and Spectators,

On behalf of the International School of The Hague, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the ISST Division 2 Boys and Girls Volleyball Championships 2019 and the city of The Hague. We are delighted to welcome all teams to the competition, as ISH host Volleyball for the first time and look forward to three action-packed days of Volleyball.

For the past three months, 10 teams from 8 different schools have been training diligently to prepare for this culminating event of their volleyball season. As the volleyball tournament progresses, I expect to witness many exciting and close fought matches played within the true spirit of the game. Although only one team can end up as champions, it is important to remember that the strength of any team lies in the whole, not the parts! Instead of trying to be the best on the team, be the best for the team. A successful team beats with one heart!

The hosting of any tournament is a community effort and I would like to express my appreciation to all those who have contributed to making this event a success. I would particularly like to thank our host families who have so generously opened their homes to you this week. Without them, tournaments of this nature would not be possible.

As the ISST organisation enters a new chapter and celebrates its 51st year, it is important to recognise how fortunate we are to be part of such a well-established, organised and prolific program for students to experience such sporting opportunities and success. Enjoy this special experience! With that in mind, I draw your attention to the ISST Statement of Sportsmanship on the next page to remind ourselves about why we are all here.

I hope at the end of the tournament you are all able to leave having had a positive experience filled with many happy memories of your time here at ISH and The Hague.

    Good luck to all!

    Omar Boutayeb

    Athletic Director and PHE Teacher

  • ISST STATEMENT OF SPORTSMANSHIP

The purpose of the International Schools Sports Tournament is to provide a venue for athletes from the member schools to compete in an environment that is safe, challenging, professional and educational. Each athlete is given the opportunity to demonstrate her/his best athletic ability while maintaining a spirit of respect and co-operation with fellow athletes from various international backgrounds.

Each event involves students and adults in their different roles. These include the athletes, coaches, sports officials and spectators. All those involved in the event are expected to uphold the same spirit of respect and co-operation. This spirit is demonstrated by fair play among athletes, positive encouragement from coaches, impartial judgments from officials and respectful enthusiasm from spectators. The behaviour of the adults is crucial to the successful educational aspect of the tournament.

The adults act as models for our athletes. Therefore profanity, deliberately making noises that distract and interfere with the performance of a competing athlete, the condemnation of coaches or officials, or any behaviour that is disrespectful or degrading to the ISST standard of sportsmanship, jeopardises the purposes of the ISST organisation and, most of all, jeopardises the quality of the experience for the athletes.

As the event ensues, we ask that all of our parents, coaches, officials and athletes keep this vision of our purpose in mind.

  • ISST GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS

These guidelines are intended for the use of parents hosting Championships and other sporting event competitions sponsored by the International Schools Sports Tournament (ISST).

    1) During the period of the Championship or competition you stand in place of their parents for the student(s) you host. Please exercise with respect to them all supervision and care that you would normally exercise with your own children.

    2) Please see below the regulations for student behavior. The student(s) you are hosting has/have already agreed to observe these regulations.

    3) Please report immediately any violation of these regulations by the student(s) you host to the responsible official designated by ISST (i.e. the Tournament Director, Housing Coordinator, Athletic Director).

    4) Neither host families nor students may negotiate changes to the ISST Regulations for Students with respect to curfew, housing arrangements, the use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs or any other rules or provisions set forth by the host school.

    5) Please make contact with the student(s) you are hosting at the time designated by the host school.

    6) Please arrange for suitable transport if necessary. Normally, this is expected to be a private car to and from the sporting events. However, it is understood that some cities operate with excellent public transport systems. Visiting athletes need to be either supervised on or shown how to use such systems.

    7) Please provide the student(s) with a suitable meal at whatever time may be necessary because of the scheduling of the competition.

    8) Please provide a box lunch for the student(s) during the competition and for the return journey to the home city (unless declined by the student).

    9) Please remind your guests to be extremely careful when using your internet access for downloading files (music, movies, etc.) or programs.

  • ISST REGULATIONS FOR STUDENTS

These regulations shall be followed by all students participating in Championships and other athletic events organized by the International Schools Sports Tournament (ISST). Any student who participates in an ISST event must agree to obey the regulations.

    1) Students shall obey all instructions given them by their host parents and their coaches as if these instructions were given to them by their own parents. This applies to all activities irrespective of location undertaken during the period of the Championship or competition.

    2) Smoking, any other use of tobacco, the drinking of alcohol and the use of drugs are not permitted.

    3) Housing arrangements made by the responsible official of the host school may not be changed.

    4) Neither host families nor students may negotiate changes to the ISST Regulations for Students with respect to curfew, housing arrangements, the use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs or any other rules or provisions set forth by the host school.

    5) These regulations apply to all students: both those from the host school and those visiting throughout the competition’s duration and for visiting students. It also applies during the journey to and from the site of the event.

    6) Photographic and video images may be recorded for coaching/research or ISST publication purposes, for example live video streaming, and only with the explicit permission and knowledge of the Championship/Meet Director.

    7) Violation of these regulations will be reported to the responsible ISST official and to the student’s Head of School. The offending student will be removed from the Championship and from the host family home, and will either be placed under the direct supervision of his/her coach or sent home.

    8) Please be extremely careful when using your host family's internet access for downloading files (music, movies, etc.) or programs.

  • CURFEW, SUPERVISION & SAFETY

The following rules and guidelines are intended to clarify what the expectations are for both host families and guest athletes with regards to curfew and supervision.

    1) NO guest athlete is allowed to leave the host family’s local environment

    (walking distance) without adult supervision.

Definition: It is acceptable for guest athletes to visit local (walking distance) cafes or take a walk in the local area without adult supervision. It is NOT acceptable for guest athletes to leave the host family’s local environment without adult supervision. In this case, guest athletes MUST return to the host family no later than 22.00.

Student athletes who are in grades 8 MUST be supervised by an adult at ALL times.

    2) If host family adults take guests out in the evening, then it is important that they return at a reasonable hour (22.00-23.00). Furthermore, guests should be mindful that they are in competition and therefore getting enough sleep throughout the visit is important.

    3) City centers and high profile tourist attractions: Clearly ISST competitions

provide wonderful opportunities for visiting athletes to not only compete but also to visit some of the best cultural sites in the world. However, even if this is a host family’s local environment we urge host families to use discretion if/when visiting such sites.

    4) It is only acceptable for guest athletes to travel with their housing partner(s)

along with host students/parents or family members from the tournament venue to the host family before or after the day’s competition. From the housing pick up guests must be accompanied by a member of the host family or designated person cleared by the Tournament Director.

  • ISST VOLLEYBALL RULES AND REGULATIONS BOYS & GIRLS Rules: FIVB Rules of Volleyball http://www.fivb.org/EN/Refereeing-Rules/ The maximum number of players (including Managers) per team will be ten (10). Promotion/relegation will be 1 and 1.

A precise record of all Yellow and Red card offences should be kept by the Tournament Director. The Tournament Director is responsible for keeping totals throughout the Championships. Any player sent off or ejected in a tournament match is ineligible to play in the following game (i.e. the player is ‘banned’ for one (1) game following the sending off). Two (2) Yellow cards in separate games do not result in suspension from the next game (i.e. the cards do not become Red).

    Tie-breaking Procedure in Flight Play:

If two teams are tied at the end of flight play, the head-to-head result determines placing.

If three or more teams are tied at the end of flight play, the tie will be resolved according to the following:

    1) The win-loss match record of the tied teams in matches involving only the tied teams

    2) Net sets in matches only involving the tied teams 3) Net points in matches only involving the tied teams 4) Net sets in all matches 5) Net points in all matches

When at any point in the tie-breaking procedure a three-way tie becomes a two-way tie, the head-to-head result between the tied teams will determine their placing in the standings.
