In Villa Padierna Medical Wellness Institute in Carratraca, we

have something special which sets us apart: “The Mineral

Medicinal waters of the Carratraca spring”.

The Romans were aware of the healing properties of the

Carratraca waters, as shown on their coins with images of

Tiberius, Claudius and Caesar found in the region. Great

warriors came to this village in the Málaga mountains to rest

their spirits and heal their wounds after tough battles.

The Arabs, who named the region, also used these waters.

Carratraca comes from the Arab ‘Karr-al-Krak’, meaning

‘scourge cleaning’ because it was where they cleaned away

their impurities and healed their bodies.

The origins of the current bath date back to the beginning of

the 18th century when the extraordinary therapeutic powers

of the sulphurous waters and springs which surrounded the

small village of Carratraca had an almost-legendary reputation,

coming to be known as miraculous waters.

During the 19th century, thanks to its waters, the bath became

one of the most famous thermal stations of the age in Europe

and its waters were awarded prizes on two occasions, once in

Paris in 1878 and the other in Madrid in 1873 such as the gold

medal for best mineral medicinal water.

The waters from the Carratraca spring are classified as rich in

sulphur, calcium and magnesium, and have an average

temperature of 18ºC. Due to this composition, they are

catalogued as mineral medicinal and can be drunk or applied

to the body.



Its sulphur content is very important therapeutically. The water

is absorbed through the skin and the respiratory and digestive
