Lecturer(s): Fernando Garcia e Costa (CCP), Jos Ferreira da Silva (R)

    1.Contact hours:Lectures - 26 Praticals - 26 Total - 52

2.Objectives:Learning of morphological and functional / molecular aspects concerning fertilization, cleavage, gastrulation, neurulation and organogenesis. Learning of basic cellular andmolecular mechanisms of embryonic / foetal development. Learning of basic notionsabout the mechanism of generation of some congenital malformations.

3.Programme:Theoretical programme - Fertilization morphological and molecular aspects.Embryogenesis morphological and molecular aspects of cleavage, gastrulation andneurulation; developping fate of the ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm. Mechanismsof development differentiation (genome inalterability; restriction, determination and

differentiation; regulation of cell diversity and differentiation); patterning; cellularmigration; cell death; growth. Organogenesis serous membranes; respiratory, digestive, urinary, sexual (male and female), skeletal and muscular systems; face andpharyngeal arches.Practical programme Spermatogenesis and oogenesis. Observation of chickentelolecithal egg and its enveloping structures and observation of chicken embryo and itsassociated membranes. Sex chromatin. Observation of embryo models. Microscopicalaspects of embryonic development and microscopic anatomy of early foetal organs.Anatomical classification of the placentae. Age determination in Mammal and Avianfoetuses. Observation of some teratological cases in Domestic Mammals.

    4. Assessment:Practical matters knowledge is evaluated through the elaboration of reports concerningthree practical themes along the semester. Its mean value contributes to 30% of thefinal score and must be equal or superior than 9.5 points (in 20). If this mean is lessthan 9.5 or if the student cannot be evaluated this way, he must be submitted to an oralpractical exam, which note must be equal or superior than 9.5 points and contributes to40% to the final score. Theoretical matters knowledge is evaluated through a writtenexam with multiple-choice questions, which contributes to 70% or 60% to the finalscore, according to the type of practical matters evaluation, and must be equal orsuperior than 9.5 points (in 20).The scientific and pedagogic coordinator
