PROGRAM OF STUDYU.S. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS | SEPTEMBER 2015

AUP Program of Study (September 2015)

Preface Shipmates, Fall semester 2015 is the most exciting in recent memory for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary University Program (AUP). Do you know that we had a 70% acceptance rate to active duty officer programs this summer? We’ve also set out to rethink our academic program in a way that:

Supports local flotillas, stations, and AUP units providing oncampus instruction, Allows students and alumni to ask and answer questions, discuss topics, and share experiences; Is more flexible for students at different schools and in different timezones.

We’re moving away from rigid online courses that require a semesterlong commitment, and we’re opening up our course content so that students, flotillas, and stations can download it, mix it up, and use it to teach classes in person. We hope that this will help students learn what they need, the way they work best. Access course material on our new website. We’ve organized the new Academics webpage by course, with everything in one place, so that you can download material for self study or oncampus classes, watch videos, and take tests without a CGAUXNET login. Visit www.cgauxedu.us/academics. Question, discuss, and share experiences in one of our Facebook Groups. We’ve created groups for Response, Prevention, and Public Affairs. Students and alumni should join the groups that interest them. Take advantage of Facebook Groups smartphone app, and don’t worry about keeping a separate account in another service. You can find links to the groups on our Academics webpage, but remember you have to be a registered AUP student, alumnus, or instructor to join. Register for individual classes covering topics that interest you. We’re breaking up our online courses into singlesession classes. This means that you can register for what you need without having to make a semesterlong commitment on top of your existing school academics, jobs, and extracurriculars. If you’re studying boat operations and know you need to learn more about first aid, then sign up for the session that covers that. If you already learned about navigation in your flotilla, then feel free to skip over that online class. We’ll bring in subject matter experts to teach, try to keep things discussionoriented, and will constantly be adding new opportunities to the class catalog throughout the year. Finally, we count class time outside of AUP (in your flotilla, at a station, skills weekend, DTRAIN, etc) towards students’ graduation requirements. Remember to submit a Verification of Outside Class time form to get those hours counted. You can do that online now as well. I’m really excited about how these changes will improve our academic experience for students, alumni, and instructors. We’re always looking for opportunities to improve, though, so keep your ideas coming. Best of luck getting started with the fall semester. Thank you for your service! Respectfully, Andrew Welch Director, Strategic Planning

Introduction Current and active participant in the AUP Program of Study, is defined by:

Maintenance of AUP related qualifications (junior, senior, and graduate); Logging of hours engaged in AUP programs; and Conformance with the programmatic guidelines and expectations described in the Leadership and

Management Guide. The AUP national staff develops and promulgates theAUP Program of Study in accordance with theAUP Leadership and Management Guide. It outlines the academic, training, and qualification expectations of students enrolled in AUP. The Program of Study will be reviewed and updated, if necessary, on an annual basis in order to remain current with Auxiliary policies and guidelines and changes within AUP. Any enrolled student who completes the requirements of this Program of Study will be permanently qualified as an “Auxiliary University Programs Graduate”. Students who do not complete the Program of Study will be designated as "Incomplete". Students that began in AUP, are not dropped from the program, but who later transferred to and graduated from the Coast Guard Academy, or who complete Coast Guard Officer Candidate School or a Direct Commission program will also receive "AUP Graduate" recognition. The Program of Study calls for minimum completion of five courses plus an operational qualification in order to qualify as a graduate. A minimum of four of these courses and the one qualification must be completed while enrolled in AUP. Students who have already completed several Auxiliary courses prior to enrolling in AUP may need to complete more than five courses in order to obtain the minimum four that must be completed while enrolled in AUP. The goal of this practice is to ensure that students are involved, active, and learning within AUP in a substantive way for at least 1224 months prior to qualifying as an AUP Graduate.

Clarifying Details

Contact Hours / Class Time Earning the AUP Graduate qualification requires the student to log a predetermined number of “contact hours” participating in classes while enrolled in AUP. Hours spent in an AUPsponsored online class are automatically recorded, and students may submit the online Verification of Outside Class Time form to record additional hours spent in live classroom training outside of AUP, or in an internship (AUP 302).

Course Substitutions Some courses taught outside of AUP may be substituted in fulfillment of Program of Study requirements. They are listed below. Substitutions not listed below will be considered for substitution (on the basis of parity in course content and rigor) by the AUP Academics staff on a case by case basis, and added to future updates to the Program of Study as necessary.

Internships and independent projects arranged through or sponsored by the student's school will be accepted provided that they (1) Are demonstrably related to the needs of the Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security, or maritime community, and (2) Are accompanied by a letter from the student's academic advisor certifying that the work has satisfactorily met the host institution's requirements.

Course Delivery Students are responsible for ensuring they complete the requirements of the courses they take. AUP delivers individual classes via webinar, allowing students to register for sessions covering topics that they need in order to complete course requirements. This means that students can register for what they need without having to make a semesterlong commitment in addition existing school academics, jobs, and extracurricular activities. It also allows students to complete a course gradually over time as the various singlesession classes are offered. For example, If a student is studying boat operations and knows that he or she needs to learn more about first aid, then that student should sign up for a session that covers first aid. If that student already learned about navigation in his or her flotilla, then he or she should feel free to skip that online class. AUP engages subject matter experts to teach in a discussionoriented format, and adds new opportunities to the class catalog on an ongoing basis. Coursework might also be completed in other inperson venues. Class time outside of AUP (in the flotilla, at a station, skills weekend, DTRAIN, etc) is counted towards students’ graduation requirements. Students wishing to have that class time counted towards graduation requirements must submit a Verification of Outside Class Time form on the AUP website.
