Discovering the Dutch(new edition)

On Culture and Society of the Netherlands

What are the salient facts about the Netherlands? This volume tackles the heart of this question through a number of themes that run through Dutch culture, history and society. From the Randstad to the Dutch Golden Age, from William of Orange to Anne Frank, Discovering the Dutch deploys a series of charming vignettes written by academic experts in order to address historical and contempo-rary issues such as immigration, tolerance, and the struggle against water, as well as issues of culture–painting, literature, architecture and design among them.

Emmeline Besamusca lectures in Dutch

culture at Utrecht University and the

University of Vienna.

Jaap Verheul is associate professor of

history and director of the American Studies

program at Utrecht University.

G. Geltner

Flogging OthersCorporal Punishment and Cultural Identity from Antiquity to the Present

Corporal punishment is often considered a relic of the Western past, a set of thinly veiled barbaric practices largely abandoned in the process of civilization. As G. Geltner argues, however, the infliction of bodily pain was not necessarily typical for earlier societies, nor has it vanished from modern penal theory, policy, and practice. To the contrary, corporal punishment still thrives today thanks to its capacity to def ine otherness eff iciently and unambiguously. Challenging a number of common myths and misconceptions about physical punishment’s importance over the centuries, Flogging Others offers a new perspective on modernization and Western identity.

G. Geltner is Professor of Medieval History at the

University of Amsterdam. His main focus is on

Western Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries.

"Brilliant! A short, sharp, and often shocking

corrective to conventional penal history and western

cultural categories. Geltner's little book mobilizes an

abundance of comparative evidence to challenge our

historical understanding of bodily punishment and

to point up the invidious cultural uses of that history.

An object lesson in scholarly provocation." - David

Garland, New York University, author of Punishment

and Modern Society.

Isidore of Seville (d. 636 CE) is a crucial f igure in the preservation and propagation of Classical and Patristic learning. Representing a cross-section of the approaches to Isidore’s writings, the authors explore Isidore’s sources, how he selected and arranged them for future use, and the different ways in which his legacy was appropriated across the early medieval West.

The Cult of Saints in Late Antique Britain

Drawing on both textual and archaeological evidence, this study examines the cult of the saints in late antique Britain, asking when and why this novel development was introduced and the subsequent impact of the Anglo-Saxon conversion to Christianity on native British cults. Presenting new information on the history of Christianity in Britain, Garcia integrates Britain into the Late Antiquity paradigm, bringing archaeological and historical evidence into dialogue with one another.

Bas von Benda-Beckmann

German Historians and the Bombing of German Cities

The Contested Air War

As one of the symbols of German suffering during World War II, the Allied bombing of civilian targets left a strong imprint on German society. To a much wider extent than is often claimed, the bombings became part of German debates. In both the GDR and the Federal Republic before and after 1990, the Allied bombings became a topic of public and political interest as well as the subject of many historical accounts, its moral and historical interpretation always fundamentally contested. Bas von Benda-Beckmann analyzes their German historiography since 1945. He explores how German accounts reflected debates on postwar German identity, and whether the history of the air war formed a “counter-narrative” against the idea that the Germans as a collective were guilty of the Nazi crimes.

Bas von Benda-Beckmann is affiliated with the NIOD Institute

for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam.

Shipwreck & Survival in Oman, 1763

The Fate of the Amstelveen and Thirty Castaways on the South Coast of Arabia

This fascinating account of an agonising trek through the Oman desert is based on the logbook kept by the Amstelveen’s only surviv-ing off icer which surfaced in 1997 in a French antique market. Thirty seamen survived the 1763 shipwreck of a Dutch East Indiaman, the Amstelveen, off the south coast of Oman. They walked hundreds of miles in the desert sun in the hope of reaching civilisation. Some of the men did not make it, while the fate of others remains uncertain. Twenty-one castaways f inally reached Muscat. Beautifully illustrated, this book offers rare insights into human nature under extreme circumstances.

Klaas Doornbos is emeritus professor of special

Thirty seamen survived the shipwreck of a Dutch East Indiaman on the south coast of Oman. They walked hundreds of kilometers in the burning sun, barefoot and almost naked, in the hope of reaching civilisation. Their journey through the desolate wilderness was agonising. Some of the men did not make it, while the fate of others remained uncertain.

Cornelis Eyks, third mate on the Amstelveen, and over twenty other cast-aways, finally reached Muscat. Never before had anyone undertaken such a journey. Eyks started his report on the shipwreck and the journey to Muscat a few weeks after his arrival. It is the oldest surviving European account of the desert coast of Oman and the people who lived there. Eyks’ logbook was recently found in France. It has been used gratefully in the retelling of this incredible VOC story.

Tocqueville, Jansenism and the Necessity of the Political in a Democratic Age

Building a Republic for the Moderns

This engaging work exploring the influence of Jansenism on Alexis de Tocqueville’s life and works is the most comprehensive treatment of the subject to date. Moving from the historical sociology of Jansenism in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century France to contemporary debates over the right to education, the role of religion in democracy and the nature of political freedom, Selby makes Tocqueville fully relevant to the present.

Emotions, Passions, and Power in Renaissance Italy

Emotions depend on language, cultural practices, expectation and moral beliefs. Hate, fear, cruelty and love are always turning history into the history of passion and lust, because emotional life is always ready to overflow intel-lectual life. This fascinating study of emotion in Renaissance Italy shows that emotions are built and created by the society in which they are expressed and conditioned. The contributors examine, among others, the emotional language of the court, around public

execution, religious practices and during outbreaks of disease.

at Kent State University, Florence campus.

Andrea Zorzi is professor of medieval

A Tiny Spot on the EarthThe Political Culture of the Netherlands in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Century

The Dutch ‘polder model’ has received much coverage in academic literature. However, de Rooy contends that this serene label is a myth. The modern political culture in the Low Countries began with a revolution and has continued with shocks and convulsions, rife with rivalries. He demonstrates how the extremely open Dutch economy is particularly vulnerable to

external political, cultural and economic pressures, much in evidence since the onset of the economic crisis.

Gregor Langfeld

German Art in New YorkThe Canonization of Modern Art between 1904 and 1957

Why did the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim in New York, as well as major collectors and curators collect German art in the f irst half of the twentieth century? And why did certain works and movements belong to the canon while others did not? Langfeld examines how modern German art was received, collected and assessed, questioning the political and ideological motivations in the process. The political attitudes of artists close to National Socialism were systematically obscured or reinterpreted in order to justify their art. Conversely, art that could be associ-ated with the off icial art of the ‘Third Reich’ was tabooed and considered ‘unworthy of the canon’. As a result, the reputation of many artists associated with Neue Sachlichkeit who had previously been highly esteemed began to wane.

ARCHAEOLOGY

Edited by Nico Roymans, Ton Derks and Henk Hiddink

The Roman Villa of Hoogeloon and the Archaeology of the Periphery

This collection of essays by leading specialists offers a fresh perspective on the integration of marginal areas in the Roman empire. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the comparative analysis of the Roman country-side. It offers an original, multi-dimensional perspective on the social dynamics that led to the development of a large villa in the relatively poor and peripheral hinterland of the Lower Rhine limes. A central role is attributed to agency and the interplay of military and urban networks and native social structures.

Fantasia of Color in Early Film

This book brings a treasure trove of early colour f ilm images into print form for viewers to enjoy, examine and dream over their forgotten splendour. Drawing on the early f ilm archives of EYE Institute Netherlands, the authors have carefully selected and repro-duced frames from the original f ilms made before World War I, presenting their fascinat-ing and often surprising images and hues. This gorgeous book has been designed to engage readers of all ages and backgrounds. It includes essays on the history of these f ilms, their technical processes, and their preserva-tion, as well as an appreciation of their visual delights.

Mattias Frey

The Permanent Crisis of Film Criticism

The Anxiety of Authority

Film criticism is in crisis. Bemoaning the current anarchy of internet amateurs and the lack of authorita-tive critics, many journalists and academics claim that in the digital age, cultural commentary has become dumbed down and fragmented into niche markets. Arguing against these claims, Frey examines the history of f ilm critical discourse in France, Germany, the UK and the US to demonstrate that f ilm criticism has, since its origins, always found itself in crisis.

Mattias Frey is senior lecturer in film at the University of Kent

and editor of the journal Film Studies.

Sergei M. EisensteinNotes for a General History of Cinema

One of the iconic f igures of the twentieth-century cinema, Eisenstein is best known as the director of The Battleship Potemkin. This comprehensive volume is the f irst English-language edition of his newly discovered notes for a “general history of the cinema”, a project he undertook during the last two years of his life, in 1946-48. While written in the Soviet Union of the second half of the 1940s, these notes deal with some of the most debated issues in contemporary f ilm and media theory: the status of cinema as a medium, the intermedial relations between cinema, other media and other art forms, the nature and the objectives of f ilm history. Eisenstein’s texts are accompanied by essays by international experts on f ilm theory and the history of Russian cinema.

Naum Kleiman is president of the Film Museum in

of Eisenstein’s most important theoretical works.

Playful IdentitiesThe Ludification of Digital Media Cultures

Digital media technologies increas-ingly shape how people relate to the world and to themselves. This thought-ful volume explores the notion of play as a lens to regard changing media practices and identity construction, arguing that play and games are not only appropriate metaphors to capture postmodern human identities, but also the very means by which people reflexively construct their identity.

This timely collection featuring both empirical and theoretical essays brings together the latest reflections on piracy and its economic, political, cultural and theoretical consequences. One of the most vexing issues of the ‘digital millennium’, piracy has reformatted the music industry and made a dent in the business models of the f ilm and software industries. This compelling study examines the relationships between cinema and urban crisis in the f ilm industries in America and Europe in the 1970s, and the representation of urban change across a range of individual f ilms. Webb provides a new geographical perspective on a rich period of f ilm history, viewing it as a unique vantage point for reflecting on the processes of globalisation and urban change.

Facing ForwardArt and Theory from a Future Perspective

This spirited exploration of the interfaces between art and theory in the 21st century brings together a multidisciplinary range of viewpoints on their future. The authors examine contemporary visual culture based on speculative predictions and creative scientif ic arguments. Focusing on seven themes – Future Tech, Future Image, Future Museum, Future City, Future Freedom, Future History, and Future Future – the book shows how

our sense of the future is shaped by a visual rhetoric of acceleration, progression, excess and destruction.

Transnational Migration in AsiaThe Question of Return

Although the question of return has certainly received scholarly attention in the past, we are only beginning to understand the changing dynamics of migration in an age of transnational-ism. The authors of this timely volume examine how these developments shape the way migration trajectories are experienced and how they acquire new meanings. The range of papers is diverse both in terms of regional focus as well as migrants’ backgrounds,

ambitions and opportunities but manage to complement each other. Transnational Migration in Asia is part of the series Global Asia published in collaboration with the Institute of International Asian Studies (IIAS).

Michiel Baas is research fellow at the Asia

Modernity is surrounded by an almost magic aura that casts a spell over people all over the world. To connect with modernity, various ways and means are used, among them magic practices and religious ideas. Dynamics of Religion in Southeast Asia: Magic and Modernity deals with the magic in and of modernity and asks about its current signif icance for the dynamics of religion in Southeast Asia. Drawing on recent ethnographic research in this area, the contributors to this wide-ranging volume demonstrate how religious concepts contribute to meeting the challenges of modernity. Against this background, religion and modernity are no longer perceived as in contradiction; rather, it is argued that a revision of the western notion of religion is required to understand the complexity of ‘multiple modernities’ in a globalised world.

This exhaustive volume covers three decades during which Central and East Asia became interwoven as one theatre where colonial powers engaged in the strategic game. Great Britain and Germany quarrelled over New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, Fiji and Samoa. France and Great Britain competed over control of continental Southeast Asia. Spain, China and Japan in Manila, 1571-1644

Local Comparisons and Global Connections

This volume offers new perspectives on the connected histories of Spain, China and Japan as they emerged following the foundation of Manila as the capital of the Spanish Philip-pines in 1571. Cross-cultural encounters not only shaped Manila’s development as a ‘Eurasian’ port city, but also had profound political, economic and social ramif ications for the three pre-modern states involved. Integrating Manila into world history helps to revise many long-cherished misconceptions while replacing them with a more balanced view.

Issue Mapping for an Ageing Europe

Issue Mapping for an Ageing Europe is a seminal guide to mapping social and political issues with digital methods. The issue at stake is the coming crisis of an ageing Europe, where soon the old will outnumber the young, putting strains on the contemporary welfare state. The book explores how web data and online tools may be used to map the ageing agenda, including debates surrounding so-called ‘old age’, cultural philosophies of ageing, itinerant care workers, and European anti-ageing cuisine.

Since 1980-1985, the post-war welfare states of Europe have been shift-ing from covering the risks of life with stable family structures to new scenarios. The sustainability of services and the f inancing of care in convalescent homes and residential homes for the elderly, home-help schemes, care for the physically handicapped and mental healthcare is one of the great social and medical problems of the modern welfare states. These forms of care are considered as new social risks. These risks are individually unaffordable because of the long terms of care and the costs involved. Therefore they are also high medical risks.

All member states of the European Union are faced with the same problems and challenges relating to the accessibility, quality and sus-tainability of long term care. The authors of this book aim to address the cover for high medical risks in the Dutch, German and Norwegian welfare states from the European perspective. The f irst objective is to explain the different paths of development. The second objective is to understand the problems that the public and private parties have faced, and still face. The third objective is to discuss possible solutions from the public or private domain.

Ripples of HopeHow Ordinary People Resist Repression Without Violence

Robert Kennedy, speaking in 1966 shortly after Nelson Mandela had been imprisoned, said: ‘Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope.’ This book shows how this is done. The author recounts stories of mothers, students, teachers, journalists, attorneys, and others who courageously stood up for freedom and human rights against repressive rulers - and helped bring about change.

Robert Press, a former journalist based in

Africa, is associate professor of political

science at the University of Southern

Mississippi.

Observing Protest from a PlaceThe World Social Forum in Dakar (2011)

Social movements have been central to history, politics, society and culture, and have had a global reach and impact. This important volume examines the impact of the Global Justice Movement as seen from the Southern hemisphere, exploring in the process a number of vital issues. The authors draw upon a collective survey from the World Social Forum in Dakar (2011), contributing to the literature on social movements, with special focus on the material dimensions of protest.

Johanna Siméant is professor of political

science at Paris 1 Sorbonne University.

Marie-Emmanuelle Pommerolle is assistant

professor of political science at Paris I

Sorbonne University.

Isabelle Sommier is professor of political

sociology at Paris I Sorbonne University.

Players and Arenas: The Interactive Dynamics of Protest bridges the gap between structural and cultural theories by placing protestors and other players with whom they interact in the context of structured arenas. Although beginning from the goals and means that each player controls, we can watch what happens when they interact creatively over short or long periods of time. The main constraints on what protestors can accomplish are not determined directly by social and political structures so much as they are imposed by other players with different goals and interests. Although the strategic complexity of politics and protest is enormous, this book makes a beginning through a careful catalogue of players and arenas. The book brings together a diverse group of global experts on the interactions between political protestors and the many other strategic players with whom they interact, including cultural institutions such as scientists, artists, intel-lectuals, mass media, and religious organizations, as well as other players in the social movement sector such as potential allies or competitors, recruits, or funders.

James M. Jasper is a sociologist at the CUNY Graduate Center, New York. Jan Willem Duyvendak is a sociologist at the University of Amsterdam. They both have written a number of books on recent social movements, and are the co-editors of AUP’s book series Protest and Social Movement.

Volker Gottowik is Associate Professor at the University of Frankfurt; currently he is working as a senior researcher in the area studies network ‘Dynamics of Religion in Southeast Asia’ (DORISEA) at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Heidelberg. He has conducted extensive f ieldwork in Indonesia.

Breaking Down the StateProtestors Engaged

Like its companion volume, Players and Arenas, this book offers a new way of analysing politics as the interplay of various players within structured arenas. The internationally acclaimed contributors bring together new perspectives on the interactions between political protestors and the many parts of the state, including courts, political parties, legislators, police, armies, and intelligence services.

Modernity is surrounded by an almost magical aura that casts a spell over people all over the world. Against this background, religion and modernity are no longer perceived as contradictionary; rather, it is argued that a revision of the western notion of religion is required to understand the complexity of ‘multiple modernities’ in a globalised world.

Players and ArenasThe Interactive Dynamics of Protest

This compelling study bridges the gap between structural and cultural theories by placing protestors and other players with whom they interact in the context of structured arenas. The main constraints on what protes-tors can accomplish are not determined directly by social and political structures so much as they are imposed by other players with different goals and interests. Although the strategic

complexity of politics and protest is enormous, this book makes a beginning through a careful catalogue of players and arenas.

The Practice of Philology in the Nineteenth Century Netherlands

This volume offers a new perspective on the evolution of philology within the humanities in Dutch scholarly culture of the nineteenth century. At that period, philology had far reaching implications on disciplines such as theology, chronology, astronomy, history, law and other disciplines. Philologists as protectors and teachers of the written heritage always played a pivotal role in the formation of the cultural repertoire of the educated public. As men of learning and high esteem, philologists also exerted influence outside the cultural sphere, especially in politics and religion. But by the end of the century this had changed radically.

The Multilingualism of Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687)This new study provides a comprehensive account of the multilingualism of Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687). Huygens used Dutch, French, Latin, Greek, Italian, English, Spanish and German in the majority of his correspondence and poetry. In his letters and poems he sometimes used just one language, whilst at other times he used more, engaging in bilingual or multilingual code switching, demonstrating his wit, learning and linguistic aptitude.

Syntax of Dutch Verbs and Verb Phrases Vol. 1 and 2

This multi-volume project presents a synthesis of the currently available syntactic knowledge of Dutch. It is primarily concerned with language description and not with linguistic theory, and provides support to all researchers interested in matters relating to the syntax of Dutch, including advanced students of language and linguistics.

Syntax of Dutch: Verbs and Verb Phrases consists of three volumes. Volume 1 opens with a general introduction to verbs, including a review of various verb classif ications and discussions on inflection, tense, mood, modality and aspect. This is followed by a discussion of complementation (argument structure and verb frame alternations). Volume 2 continues the discussion of complementation, but is more specif ically focused on clausal comple-ments. The third volume will be published in 2016.

Hans Broekhuis is a researcher at the Meertens Institute

in Amsterdam.

Norbert Corver is professor of Dutch linguistics at Utrecht

University.

Riet Vos was affiliated with the Syntax of Dutch project as

a postdoctoral researcher. COMPREHENSIVE GRAMMAR RESOURCES

The Syntax of Dutch will be published in at least seven volumes in the period 2012-2016 and aims at presenting a synthesis of the currently available syntactic knowledge of Dutch. It is primarily concerned with language description and not with linguistic theory, and provides support to all researchers interested in matters relating to the syntax of Dutch, including advanced students of language and linguistics.

The volume Adjectives and Adjective Phrases discusses the internal make-up as well as the distribution of adjective phrases. Topics that will be covered include: complementation and modification of adjective phrases; comparative and superlative formation; the attributive, predicative and adverbial uses of adjective phrases. Special attention is paid to the so-called partitive genitive construction and the adverbial use of past/passive participles and infinitives.

Hans Broekhuis is a researcher at the Meertens Institute in Amsterdam.

“This project is, by all measures, an extraordinary one, both in conception and execution. To a remarkable degree the Syntax of Dutch project manages to harmonize demands of depth and breadth. In part this appears to be due to the highly systematic approach followed. I believe the Syntax of Dutch project will ultimately become a model for comprehensive grammatical description in the years ahead.”Richard Larson, Professor of Linguistics at University of Stony Brook
