Dear friends and colleagues,

Welcome to Austin! It is exciting to be back in the capital for the first time since the Institute’s initial launch in 2011.

When we were last here, Texas School Ready was serving about 60,000 students each year. This year TSR greatly expanded our capacity to support teachers and students statewide, launching three new delivery models, as well as the CLI Engage digital platform, a new home to TSR’s program tools. Through the powerful technology of CLI Engage we are able to serve record numbers of at-risk children in every type of early education setting—this past year alone, TSR Online resources on the CLI Engage platform were utilized by 8,100 teachers and 2,070 principals, specialists, and school directors, together serving over 140,000 children in Texas. And we continue to grow every day. If you are not currently enrolled in one of the Texas School Ready models, visit texasschoolready.org to learn the many ways you can participate.

Because TSR reaches such varied early childhood audiences, the TSR Summer Institute is a wonderful opportunity to bring together diverse professionals to share ideas, align goals, and learn from the very best in the field. As with previous years, we have brought education leaders and researchers whose work contributes to the international discourse around best practices in early childhood development and program improvement, including CLI’s own Founder and Director, Dr. Susan H. Landry. We highly encourage you join to these featured sessions.

We hope this week gives you new knowledge, practical ideas, and a renewal of our shared commitment to positively impact the lives of young children. Thank you for all you do!

Best regards,

April Crawford, Ph.D.Director of State Initiatives and the Texas School Ready ProjectChildren’s Learning Institute at UTHealth

Texas School Ready is a comprehensive preschool teacher training program that combines a research-based, state-adopted curriculum with ongoing professional development and progress monitoring tools. Teachers from child care centers, Head Start programs, and public school prekindergarten participate in TSR. Throughout the school year, teachers enrolled in TSR are provided tools to help them learn more about the specific instructional needs of the children in their classrooms and how to support children using engaging lessons and activities. The new skills and techniques that teachers learn through TSR positively affect the classroom experience for children.

Texas School Ready is now implemented across the state through three delivery models that vary by support level intensity: TSR Online, TSR Online+, and TSR Comprehensive. Agencies can participate in multiple levels of service at the same time, depending on the needs of the teachers and childcare providers they serve. Learn more at texasschoolready.org!

As managing director of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, Mr. Smith has been forging consensus around ensuring that children reach the critical developmental milestone of reading on grade level by the end of third grade. “Focusing on helping the youngest children succeed in school was the logical next step to advance the Foundation’s two-generation strategy for attacking intergenerational poverty,” notes Smith, referring to Casey’s efforts to help low-income parents succeed economically while improving access to high-quality early childhood learning opportunities in order to give their children a strong start.
