Delegate Presentation NotesA comprehensive hard copy version of the presentation notes will be provided to all delegates as part of their registration fee. All delegates will also be provided with adequate notepads and pens for the duration of the symposium. After the symposium, delegates wishing to obtain presentation notes on a USB stick will be able to order them for a small cost.

Michael LinkeIPAExecutive General Manager Member Services

Michael is responsible for the strategic direction of the IPA’s marketing and communications teams, together with the educational and academic pathways growth strategies within Australia and through IPA target markets overseas. A critical focus of Michael’s team is to enhance IPA recognition and brand awareness across industries and through the academic arena.

Michael joined the IPA in 2012, having relocated back to Australia after spending twelve years working overseas in senior leadership positions in London and New York for global organisations including Deloitte, the investment bank J.P. Morgan and The Washington Post’s educational arm, Kaplan. Michael has focused his career on various disciplines of brand, marketing, postgraduate educational development and communications. Michael’s academic qualifications are in Marketing, Law and Commerce, and he is a Fellow of the UK’s Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Accounting at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics was appointed by the Victorian Governor as a Director of Eastern Health and in 2001 was awarded the Centenary of Federation Medal through the Order of Australia. Andrew’s academic background and qualifications are in Commerce, Education and Commercial Law.

Dr Michael Schaper Deputy Chair Australian Competition and Consumer Commission

Michael’s work has a special focus on small business, franchising, industry associations and business liaison with the national competition & consumer protection regulator. Dr Schaper was first appointed in July 2008.

A previous president of the Small Enterprise Association of Australia & New Zealand, he has also previously served as Small Business Commissioner for the Australian Capital Territory, chairperson of the ACT Small & Micro-Business Advisory Council and a director of the International Council for Small Business. In 2009 he was recipient of the “National Small Business Champion Award” by the Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia.

Michael has previously managed a community small business centre; been an adviser to government at both state and federal level; and held lecturing, professorial and dean roles at a number of Australian universities. He is currently an Adjunct Professor with Curtin University and a senior honorary research fellow at the University of Western Australia, and chairs the advisory board of Griffith University’s Asia-Pacific Centre for Franchising Excellence. He holds a PhD and a Master of Commerce, as well as a Bachelor of Arts. His

latest books are Entrepreneurship & Small Business: Asia-Pacific and Governments, SMEs and Entrepreneurship Development. Dr Schaper is a member of the ACCC’s enforcement and adjudication committees.

John ChapmanSmall Business Commissioner South Australia

John Chapman was appointed as Small Business Commissioner on 24th September 2014. The role of Small Business Commissioner includes alternative dispute resolution for business disputes, administration of a number of Acts affecting small business, providing information to small businesses and advocating on their behalf. He brings to the role extensive experience in public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Previously he was Chief of Staff to the SA Minister for Investment and Trade, Minister for Defence Industries and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Hon. Martin Hamilton-Smith. He has held a number of board positions including:• President of Group Training

Australia (SA);• Founding Director of Auto Skills

Australia – the automotive industry’s national training body; and

• Councillor on the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council.

Steven LeaneySenior Account Manager Xero

Steven Leaney is a Senior Account Manager at Xero and Chartered Accountant. He has owned and sold small businesses and absolutely loves using technology to create more efficient systems and processes.

Andrew Conway FIPAIPA Chief Executive OfficerA former Australian

Government Treasury Ministry Chief of Staff, Andrew holds the record of being the youngest CEO of a public entity, when in 2009 he was 28 at the time of his appointment. Andrew has represented Australia a range of International events including APEC, G20 and World Trade Organisation.

Andrew was awarded the 2011 Young Professional of the Year award, appointed an adjunct Professor of

Anthony StaltariPartner Enablement Specialist XeroAnthony Staltari is a

Partner Enablement Specialist at Xero and Chartered Accountant. He’s passionate about how technology is changing the way we do business. From the cafe on the corner to large accounting firms, Anthony loves assisting small/medium business compete with “the big guys”. Anthony has been in the financial services industry for 10 years with experience in Australia’s big 4 banks, public practice and running his own small business.

Clark Anstis

Senior Project Manager Australian Accounting Standards Board

Clark is a Senior Project Manager with the Australian Accounting Standards Board, having worked in accounting standard-setting roles since 1987 primarily in Australia, but also in the USA and the UK. His current principal responsibilities at the AASB cover the Australian Financial Reporting Framework project, research projects and regulatory matters such as managing the compilation process for amendments to Standards. Clark has been involved with many areas over the years, including managing the work of the former Urgent Issues Group of the AASB and as Technical Advisor to the Australian member of the International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board. Prior to becoming a standard setter, Clark

worked for a predecessor firm of Ernst & Young, in auditing, technical and education roles, based in Melbourne, but also with experience in Singapore and Indonesia.

Kevin OsbornDeputy Chairman Port Adelaide Football ClubAfter a 20-year global

career with Bank One ( now part of J P Morgan Chase) then the USA’s fourth largest banking group, Kevin became a professional director in 2003. He is a founder/director of VUCA Pty a boutique management and board advisory firm. VUCA specializes in leadership improvement for Boards and Executives. His non-executive director career has seen him work on some of the largest global corporate transactions including the $6.2 billion sale of Viterra to Glencore the largest Agricultural transaction in the world in 2012. David BatesManaging Director Workforce GuardianDavid is the Managing

Director of Workforce Guardian, Australia’s leading employment relations service for employers. David is proud to lead a team providing a wide range of strategic, practical and plain-English employment relations advice and support to Australian business owners and operators. David gained his BA (Government) from the University of Queensland in 1998 before going on to complete a Law degree, with Honours, in 2001. He later moved to Canada and the United Kingdom where he was employed in a variety of HR, legal and public affairs roles within the public and private sectors, including extended engagement by HM Government. David routinely represents employers in Fair Work-related proceedings and can assist with all aspects of employment relations compliance. David is also an accomplished and highly sought-after public speaker who facilitates dynamic, informative, and highly interactive workshops on all aspects of workplace relations best-practice. He is also the ‘Switzer’ program’s Workforce expert, and can be regularly seen on the Sky News Business channel.

Darren BurgessHead of High Performance Port Adelaide Football Club

Darren is currently High Performance Manager at Port Adelaide Football (AFL) Club having returned to Australia in November 2012 to take on this role. Prior to this appointment Darren was Head of Fitness and Conditioning at Liverpool Football Club, having started with the club immediately after the 2010 Football World Cup. From 2008 till 2010 Darren was

employed as Head of Sports Science for Football Federation Australia as well as the Australian Soccer Team’s Fitness Coach. Darren haspreviously worked as Head of High Performance at Port Adelaide Football Club (2004-2007) and Assistant Fitness Coach with Sydney Swans in the AFL (1997-2000), as well as Head Fitness Coach with the Parramatta Power in the Australian National Soccer League (2002-2004). Darren has also worked as a video analyst with the Australian Olympic Soccer Team prior to the 2004 Athens Olympics. Darren worked as a lecturer in Exercise Science at Australian Catholic University in Sydney between 1997 and 2005 and completed his PhD in movement analysis of AFL and Soccer in 2012. Darren has had multiple papers published in peer review journals and has spoken at many international conferences. Darren is also a Nike Sparq Performance Expert.

Tim CliftonPartner at Clifton HallTim is a Chartered

Accountant (20 years) and Official Liquidator. In recent years, Tim has focussed heavily on the preparation forensic accounting reports regarding quantification of economic loss arising from breach of contract, misrepresentation, professional negligence, defamation, breaches of Australian Consumer Law (formerly the Trade Practices Act), personal injury and business interruption. He has also conducted numerous business valuations in the context of partner or shareholder disputes and been involved in some of South Australia’s highest profile investigations including those relating to Beneficial Finance, the State Bank and the Bond group of companies. Tim has undertaken pricing investigations for the ACCC as well as a broad range of investigations in relation to fraud, asset tracing, financial reconstruction and insolvency. Tim has given evidence in the Federal Court of Australia as well as the Supreme and District Courts of South Australia.

Peter AdamsPeter has more than 20 years’ experience as

a tax professional. He has worked in senior tax roles in both the profession and commerce having started his career with KPMG and PwC before moving on to become Head of Tax for BNP-Paribas (Australia and New Zealand) and subsequently Chase Manhattan-Ord Minnett. Peter has also worked as a Senior Tax Writer with CCH Australia. Throughout his career Peter has always had an interest in tax training and was a Senior Tax Trainer with initially the Institute of Chartered Accountants and then WebbMartin and Kaplan where he conducted tax

seminars for professional accountants throughout Australia. More recently Peter has been a Senior Tax Partner with both Bell Partner and Kelly + Partners. Peter has recently set up his own boutique tax practice and continues to provide tax consulting and training services for professional accountants across Australia. His knowledge of Australian tax is of the highest calibre and he is regularly asked to present for professional associations at conferences and other events.

Shirley SchaferPartner Superannuation BDOShirley is the National

Superannuation Partner for BDO. She is an auditor by training and a SMSF specialist by choice. She established a separate Superannuation division at BDO in 1996, recognizing the need to provide high quality technical services to clients with self-managed superannuation funds. Shirley is a regular speaker at SMSF & Audit conferences. She provides SMSF competency training for accountants and auditors and is the author of the Thomson Reuters SMSF Audit Guide. She is an Accredited Specialist Adviser and Accredited Specialist Auditor of the SMSF Association (SMSFA): a Fellow of the Association of Superannuation Funds Australia (ASFA); a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) and a Registered SMSF Auditor.

Vicki StylianouExecutive General Manager Advocacy & Technical

Vicki came to the IPA in June 2007 from Federal Treasury, where she worked in tax policy, financial literacy, prudential regulation of the banking sector and in the Office of Best Practice Regulation on secondment. Prior to this, Vicki was a practicing lawyer specialising in commercial litigation, working in Australia and internationally. Vicki holds a B.Juris, LL.B, BA, MBA (international business) and recently finished the Diploma of Financial Planning with Deakin University. At the IPA, Vicki leads the team with responsibility for policy, advocacy and government relations; media; and communications.

Scott WayDirector Industrial & Organisational Psychology BDO

Scott is the Director of BDO Industrial & Organisational Psychology. He has over twenty five years consulting experience throughout Australia and Asia. Scott previously held senior positions within the automotive and mining industries as well as the Australian Public Service and now specialises in working with teams, divisions and organisations to enhance the performance of their operations and their people. Scott has extensive experience throughout Australia and has also consulted to organisations in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, East Africa and Japan.
