MicroMAPS

Virginia Space Grant ConsortiumMicroMAPS

Since the first data flight in June of 2004

MicroMAPS/Proteus has acquiredapproximately 100

hours of flightdata over the

US, England and the

Mediterranean Sea.

MicroMAPS is a partnership between VSGC and Langley Research Center to developand deploy an instrument payload to study the movement and distribution of carbonmonoxide in the atmosphere. That payload now flies on the Proteus research aircraftat altitudes above 50,000 ft.

Since 2002, MicroMAPS has engaged 9 faculty members and45 students at threeVSGC member universities. The project is currently funded through 2006.

There are plans to fly with a Dept. of Energy research campaign in Australia 2006.

Virginia’s Geospatial Extension Program

Virginia Space Grant Consortium

VSGC established a Geospatial Extension Specialist position in Cooperative Extension at Virginia Tech to serve as a focal point for geospatial training, education and outreach activities throughout the Commonwealth. The program uses a coordinated approach topromote the integration of geospatial tools and techniques at the local, regional, and state levels. It works with individuals, governments, the educational system and economic organizations to provide training, tools and access to data.• VGEP website (http://www.cnr.vt.edu/gep/) has received an award from ESRI for

being among the world’s best as a GIS resource.

• VGEP was recently recognized by Virginia Tech College of Natural Resourcesas their premier outreach program in 2005.

• The Virginia Geospatial Newsletter has become the preferred avenue for VirginiaState agencies to disseminate information about geospatial activities.

• The program works closely with Geospatial Extension Specialists in other states.• The VGEP, now in its final year of full Space Grant funding, will be continued

by Virginia Tech.

Virginia’s Access -Mid Atlantic Geospatial Information Consortium

VA-MAGICVA-MAGIC is a university consortium for the development of systems to support government and community decision makers in the region. It is led by George Mason University and is funded by NASA Stennis.

Members include: Old Dominion University-University of Maryland, College Park-Virginia Tech Hampton University-The College of William and Mary-The University of Virginia and The Virginia Space Grant Consortium

• At Virginia Tech we support the Applications Designer/Trainer to produce and deliver workshops and web based GIS training for extension agents and other state personnel.

• At VSGC, the OVERSpace program prepares pre-college teachers to introduce GIS/GPS into the classroom.

• At Old Dominion, we fund a graduate student to develop a technique for geo-referencing data sets from air or space-borne earth observinginstruments.

The 2004-2005 VSGC award from VA-MAGIC was $100,000

National Space Grant Student Mission to Mars

ParticipatingConsortia:AlabamaArizonaColoradoHawaiiLouisianaMinnesotaMontanaNew MexicoNevadaOhioPennsylvaniaTexasUtahVirginia

A national project to develop a student-designed instrument in support of the NASA vision for human exploration of Mars.• MIMIC students from all fourteen participating

consortia were at JPL for the summer.• Students worked with JPL mission scientists

on a proposal for an instrument concept that wouldsupport the search for water on the Moon and onMars

• The student proposal was presented to JPL reviewers on August 15 and was well received.

• One of the objectives for this summer was to show howstudent participation in the planned Lunar mission can be leveraged to support the coming manned exploration of Mars.

• The program now is awaiting direction from NASA.
