The past year has been busy and full of challenges. We have partnered with the National office and staff to improve the USTA Mid-Atlantic Section (MAS). The Board of Di-rectors and I have promised to ensure open lines of commu-nication, transparency, and accountability, while the section volunteers and staff continue to work to offer a more diverse range of tennis opportunities for all members. The Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia districts continue to strengthen Community Tennis Associations (CTAs) and other grass-roots programs. The MAS Committees have worked diligently to make the section both productive and progressive. I appreciate the Co-Chairs and members’ time, talent and contributions for a job well done. The Section’s Mid-Atlantic Tennis and Education Foundation (MATEF) is growing tennis by giving grants to juniors and tennis organizations that promote and develop tennis. MATEF also inducted Richey Reneberg, Cora Masters Barry, Roy Van Brunt, and Anne and Mark Geier into the Hall of Fame. The Legg Mason Tennis Classic is one of the largest and well-attended events, brought some of the world’s top-rated male tennis players to Washington, DC. In the Virginia District, the Asian Festival in Reston had 20,000 participants in a carnival atmosphere, featuring on-court tennis games. The USTA Adult, Senior, Super Senior and Mixed Doubles leagues had a banner year with nearly 14% growth and continue to grow by leaps and bounds. In addition, new formats like Flex and Combo Leagues are growing and attracting more recrea-tional tennis players. The new Quick Start tennis format will provide more tennis opportunities, and we plan to reach a greater base of non-USTA players to get them into the game. A special thanks goes out to the MAS Board of Directors, Sectional Staff, District Officers and Staff, and MAS Volunteers. I challenge every USTA Mid-Atlantic member to be a part of the Section’s future and bring a friend, family member, or neighbor into this sport we all love. Better yet, sponsor a junior with a gift of a USTA membership. Volunteers are needed in the community-tennis associations, grass-roots programs, districts and the section. Please go online to www.midatlantic.usta.com or call the Section office at 703-556-6120. You can make a difference. We need your help. Join the USTA family.

MID-ATLANTIC TENNIS & EDUCATION FOUNDATION

The Mid-Atlantic Hall of Fame induction dinner netted a record-setting $40,000 for the Mid-Atlantic Tennis and Education Founda-tion’s summer tennis camp programs, which has provided funding for more than 1,000 youths. Former District of Columbia Mayor Anthony Williams, USA Fed Cup and Olympic Captain Zina Garrison, and USTA Chairman and President Jane Brown-Grimes were among the VIP guests at the sold-out gala of 230 attendees. Emcee Elise Burgin, a 2003 Mid-Atlantic Hall of Fame member, introduced the inductees. MATEF President Robert L. Bunnen Jr. said with the proceeds, more children will be helped. “Our overnight camps can cost $800 per week, so this creates 50 new camper slots,” Bunnen said. “That’s awesome. MATEF will be able to send more youth to our summer camp program as well as increasing grants to individuals for high-performance training and supporting worthy organizations serving our mission of providing tennis and education to at-risk youngsters throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. We also will add to our roster of camp partners and provide assistance for the educational component of the camps, including speed reading, essay writing and oral presen-tation on tennis, sportsmanship, nutrition and life issues. “The Board and I are so proud of what we have been able to do for at-risk youth in DC, MD, VA & WV. We have tripled the number of

campers at our tennis & education camp partners in the last three years and have provided these camp scholarships to over 1,000 at-risk youth since our founding. Because of the generous support by so many of you, in 2007 MATEF was able to sponsor 151 disadvantaged youth to either an overnight or a day-time educa-tional and tennis summer camp. MATEF strives to raise the self-esteem of Maryland, Washington, West Virginia and Virginia youth. By combining your contri-butions with the generous contributions from Nike and Grand Slam Tours, you have allowed MATEF to make a difference in the lives of many. Our Campers and the entire MATEF Board and Trustees join me in thanking you for your continued support.” Rob Bunnen

Virginia Wade, the Mid-Atlantic Hall of Fame guest speaker, was honored for the 30th anniversary of winning her 1977 Wimbledon title. The British native beat defending ‘76 Wim-bledon champion Chris Evert in three sets in the semifinals and went on to defeat Betty Stove in the finals for her third Grand Slam singles title. She is the last British player to win a Wimble-don singles title, and she won on the 100th-year anniversary of the tournament. The International Tennis Hall of Fame member has been ranked in the top 10 for 13 years from 1967-1979 and has also won four Grand Slam Doubles titles with Margaret Court.

Anne and Mark Geier have paired together to become the winningest Mid-Atlantic mixed-doubles pair. The Silver Spring,

Maryland residents have achieved the first Grand Slam of Mixed

Doubles in Mid-Atlantic’s history by being ranked No. 1 in all Mixed Doubles categories and are ranked No. 1 in Mixed 45 and

55 doubles. Mark Geier’s mother helped him meet his future wife. His mother picked up a mixed-doubles entry. But Mark didn’t play mixed doubles, so he threw it away. His mother told him he should play and went through the Mid-Atlantic rankings and found the top-ranked girl in the 18s. It was Anne Watson. “My life changed when I met Anne,” Mark said. “I said ‘Some day we will win the Mid-Atlantic Championship.’”

MID-ATLANTIC TENNIS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Cora Masters Barry helps children become more confident and improve their lives with tennis, education, and college scholar-ships. Barry, former District of Columbia first lady, is Founder and CEO of the Rec-reation Wish List Committee of Wash-ington, DC, which recently completed the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center, a $5.1 million tennis facility in Washington, DC.

Maryland resident Richey Reneberg, who was ranked as high as No. 20 in singles and No. 1 in doubles, beat some of the world’s best players in the ‘90s. Reneberg, who was ranked No. 1 in doubles with partner Jim Grabb, won two Dou-bles Grand Slam tournaments, including the ’92 U.S. Open with Grabb and the ‘94 Australian Open with Jared Palmer. The former Davis Cup player has singles wins over John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Goran Ivanisevic and Jim Cou-rier. Reneberg was named the ATP Newcomer of the Year and the Intercollegiate Tennis Associa-tion National Player of the Year in 1987. He advanced to the 1986 NCAA finals and was a three-time All-American.

Roy Van Brunt was the youngest person ever at 43 (in 1989) selected for the USTA National Chairman of Umpires. He was the Chief U.S. Open Um-pire, worked as a line umpire for the 1981 U.S. vs. Czech Davis Cup, was a Chair Um-pire at 15 consecutive U.S. Opens between 1977-1991, and um-pired several tourna-ments throughout the country.

They did. After compet-ing in tournaments for 43 years, they have won the open mixed doubles more than 10 times, and the husband and wife more than 20 times. Anne is first in having the most No. 1 rankings in the history of the Mid-Atlantic Section and Mark is second. The Geiers have their own har-tru court and play often. “Because of tennis, I have my wife, my education, friends, a social life, and entertainment,” Mark said. “Mark loves tennis,” Anne said. “Every weekend, we would play a different tournament. I don’t know how we did it. It was a lot of tennis. You have to love it to do it.” They did.

She did win, but it took another five years. I was 17 when she won.”

Barry has helped hundreds of students. Williams said, “Someone who stands out in the leadership of our city is Cora. We love you. Keep doing what you are doing. You’re the best.” For articles on the Hall of Fame induc-tees, go to the USTA Mid-Atlantic web-site at www.midatlantic.usta.com

USTA Mid-Atlantic is No. 1 Mid-Atlantic finished first in increased league participation with nearly a 14% increase. Mid-Atlantic tennis has been on the rise for the last seven years. In 2001, the section had 14,789 league participants. In 2007, that increased 134% to 34,682 participants, more than doubling previous totals. Mid-Atlantic Sectional League Coordinator Pam Leibfreid said, “This huge increase was due to the popularity of our new combo leagues. Some areas will be starting tri-level leagues this year, and I am confident they will also be very popular with the players.”

Mid-Atlantic Section Co-ed Tennis On-Campus Champion Georgetown, finalist Virginia Tech (VT) and third-place University of Virginia (UVA) advanced to the 2008 National Campus Tennis Championship to be held April 17-19 in Cary, NC. To qualify, the teams had to finish in the top three out of 13 college club teams, compet-ing from DC, Maryland, and Virginia, at the Tennis On-Campus Mid-Atlantic Section Championships at the Boars Head Inn in Charlottesville, Va. The Campus Championships followed the World Team Tennis (WTT) Format: one set of women’s singles and doubles, one set of men’s singles and doubles, and one set of mixed doubles. The no-ad games were added up for the five sets to determine the winner. In the finals, Georgetown defeated VT 25-17, and in the semifinals nipped home-team UVA 25-23, while VT topped Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) 28-17 in the other semifinal. UVA earned third-place by defeating VCU 29-13 in the consolation match for the final national berth. Georgetown captain Will Grosswendt said UVA, the defending two-time national finalist, was the toughest team to beat. The Hoyas were up by four heading into the mixed doubles and they lost 6-3. So they are ahead by one game. If UVA wins one more game, the teams will go into a tiebreaker. Grosswendt was serving up 40-30 and needed to win the next point for the match. He got his first serve in and hit several volleys deep to force an error for the victory. “It is pretty tense,” said Grosswendt, who plays tennis for the competition. “If they would have won that last game, we would have gone to a tiebreaker.” The Hoyas won both singles matches decidedly, but lost all three doubles matches by close margins. They won by outdistancing UVA in games 25-23. “You can lose more matches but win more games,” he said. “When every game matters, it makes it more of a team effort.” Grosswendt will be making a return trip to nationals with the Hoyas, who went last year as an at-large team, falling to third-place Penn State. The Hawaii high-school grad said campus tennis is fun and competitive. “Some players can definitely play college tennis.” He added that the Hoyas had an overwhelming response for players this year. “It is the biggest club sport at Georgetown,” he said. “We have 120 people.” Grosswendt likes the WTT format. Only two matches are contested at once at adjoining courts. The players play men’s and women’s doubles first. Men’s and women’s singles are next. Then mixed doubles are last. “I like the excitement,” he added. “We have two matches going at once, and both teams get into cheering for their teammates.”

Georgetown Crowned Champions

The Georgetown Hoyas were named the Tennis On-Campus Mid-Atlantic Champions after beating out 12 other co-ed non-varsity teams in Charlottesville, Va, and will ad-vance to the national championship in North Carolina. Team members are (Front, L-R) Fernando Gentil, Morgan Breck, Sam Baxter, Andrea Pazmino, and captain Will Grosswendt. (Back) Nick Calta, Tedd Richardson, and Jay Sykes.

MID-ATLANTIC CO-ED TENNIS ON CAMPUS

The Hoyas (whose team members are Grosswendt, Jay Sykes, Alexandra Miller, Andrea Pazmino, Tedd Richardson, Nick Calta, Fernando Gentil, Samantha Baxter and Morgan Breck) sailed through the Gray Flight with an unbeaten 2-0 record over second-place U.S. Naval Academy and third-place James Madison University. VT (whose team members are captain Henrique Lage, Brad Wakely, Russ Mammei, Mike Vaughn, Caroline Koch, Saki Kadotani, Jackie Holt, Lisa Kaiser, Kristy Lippard, and Russ Tay-lor) earned a semifinal berth by going undefeated and downing second-place University of Maryland (Baltimore County) and third-place Johns Hopkins University. Defending Mid-Atlantic Champion UVA (whose team members are captain Aaron Brownell, Rick Sherwood, Karl Blunder, Aaron Brownell, Krishna Balachander, Akeem Williams, Kristin Dunbar, Sara Heppe, Sabine Kronenburg, Katie Garrison, and Stephanie Macdisi) went un-beaten, winning the Red Flight to advance to the semifinals, followed by second-place University of Mary Washington, third-place George Wash-ington University, and fourth-place Christopher Newport University. All the Green Flight teams finished with a 1-1 record. VCU earned the semifinal berth by having a .03 higher winning percentage than second-place William and Mary. The University of Maryland finished third. The three teams going to nationals will be joined by 37 other USTA Campus Championship place-winners, as well as 25 other teams entering the tournament through an at-large selection process. They are the best teams out of 500 college on-campus teams nationwide. Texas A&M is the four-time reigning national champion.

USTA/MARYLAND DISTRICT

The remarkable growth in USTA/Maryland tennis this year gives us all reason to be proud. The number of youngsters participating in our USTA Junior Team Tennis championship program increased from 172 to more than 1200, and our USTA Leagues numbers grew overall by an average of 16%. We ended the year with more USTA organizational members – 182 – than ever, and individual membership grew to more than 13,300 juniors and adults. Volunteers from across the state working with our staff helped us achieve these successes. Our parks and recreation, and public schools partners also contributed significantly by joining with USTA Maryland to promote tennis as a healthy choice to combat obesity and as a means of devel-oping important life skills in our youth. I would also like to share with you some of the 2007 events which highlight USTA Maryland’s involvement with our communities. The 26th Annual Hispanic Festival promotes an awareness of Hispanic culture while offering a day of fun activities for families. Held at Lane Manor Park in Adelphi, it was attended by roughly 10,000 people. USTA/Maryland staff and volunteers hosted a booth featuring bilingual materials designed to educate families about the lifetime health benefits of tennis. We also provided informa-tion about local tennis classes and clinics. Visitors to the booth took turns rallying on a grass "mini-court" with foam balls. We also hosted a “Hit and Get” prize game on the park’s tennis courts. The Kids Being Healthy Expo at the Baltimore Convention Center was a first-ever national event bringing together more than 2,000 educators, nutritionists, policy makers, food manufacturers, government agencies, community organizations, and parents to explore how to help children make better food choices and appreciate the benefits of adopting a more active lifestyle. USTA/Maryland, in partnership with the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks and the Baltimore Tennis Patrons, distributed information about in-school and after school tennis programs in Maryland. We erected a mini-court on which attendees could rally and learn how tennis can be taught and played in a non-traditional space, such as a school gym or cafeteria, using foam balls and pop-up nets. During the 27th Annual Kinderfest at Watkins Regional Park in Upper Marlboro, USTA/Maryland offered tennis activities and part-nered with the Prince George's Tennis and Education Foundation to provide information about local tennis opportunities and USTA membership. And at the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association (MRPA) annual convention in Ocean City, USTA/Maryland hosted an information booth providing hundreds of recreation and parks professionals with information about national and local resources for public tennis programs and facilities, including marketing, training, equipment, and funding. We can be proud as well that four Marylanders – Roy Van Brunt, Anne and Mark Geier, and Richey Reneberg – were selected in 2007 for induction into the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Hall of Fame by the Mid-Atlantic Tennis & Education Foundation. My deepest thanks to all our volunteers and partners, to the Maryland Board of Directors and to the Maryland District Staff for a job well done.

USTA/VIRGINIA DISTRICT

A volunteer organiza-tion like ours faces many cha l l enges . Three that are particu-larly difficult are con-sistency, communication and momentum. Consistency is nearly non-existent since there are constantly new volunteers and they are just that – vol-unteers – with family lives and jobs to look after. Communication can easily get garbled or lost because the USTA has many layers. Plus – see consistency above. And momentum, the feeling of having a guiding vi-sion and daily mission that everyone understands, buys into and can act on, is hard to come by in two short years. Plus – see consistency and communication above! The good news is we all have a common interest, and that is our incredible love and appreciation of the game of tennis, and that propels us a great deal. Many great volunteers give countless hours of their precious time to create playing opportunities for chil-dren and adults all across our state regardless of age and physical abilities. Additionally, we have what I believe is the brightest, hardest working, most pas-sionate staff of any district in the country. How do we put that all together to benefit tennis in Vir-ginia? First, over the next year your Board will be inviting committee chairs to attend some of our meet-ings. The board can provide direction, support and remove obstacles so our committees can be successful, but we can’t do that unless we spend time with them. Second, we will streamline our approach to marketing what we do. Each committee will be asked early in the year what informa-tion they want to get out to the tennis public. We will then develop a comprehensive plan inclusive of all efforts so our message can become clearer and more consistent. Third, we will look to better utilize the talents of the staff to support the goals and actions of the committees. Finally, the Board wants to spend more time listening at the ground level to what is and isn’t working in our plans. We will have Board representation at as many Virginia events as possible throughout the year to hear from local volunteers and tennis players. This message is not to minimize what we have accomplished in 2007. We had an incredible year. League participation topped 20,000 for the first time ever!! Membership grew 6%, Junior Team Tennis participation jumped 258% and tournament participation increased 12%. Congratulations! But as they say in that commercial, “yesterday is history.” Let’s see what we can get done in ’08.

On behalf of the staff, elected officers and the Board of Directors of the Wash-ington Tennis Association, I welcome and invite you to come and play tennis in Washington, DC. Imagine hitting an overhead smash with the Washington Monument in the background. We have senators, congressmen and top jurists playing and enjoying the game of tennis right on our local courts. Our league campaign is the most competitive in the section. Our adult tournaments have grown to be the best in the area. Come see our youth tournaments and enjoy our junior leagues. This year our special events include the NBC 4 Your Health and Fitness Exposition, and the Wimbledon on the Anacostia experience. We also co-host the Les Halles Cup. That weekend event includes closing part of Pennsylvania Avenue, putting up a net and playing tennis in the middle of the most well-known street in America. You won’t want to miss our Active Aces Super Seniors Tennis Club event on Dec. 16 of this year. This gala features players competing up into their ’80s. They prove that tennis is a lifetime sport. It will be the hit of the holiday season. As President of the Washington District, I offer everyone reading this message a special invitation to get involved in the game. We are growing the game and we need more volunteers at every level. If you would like more information about signing up to help, contact me at 202-546-8525. I look forward to hearing from you. Play tennis in Washington and enjoy the game.

USTA/WEST VIRGINIA DISTRICT

The USTA/West Virginia Dis-trict enjoyed a banner year in 2007, energized by and directed through wonderful co-operative efforts of staff, board, and volun-teers. The district grew in both organizational and individual USTA memberships, along with such important USTA Pro-grams as Leagues and Junior Team Tennis. Also, our District began an important diversity effort called The Appalachian Youth Tennis & Education Program. This socio-economic driven program, utilizing a Mid-Atlantic Tennis and Education Foundation grant, along with private donations, began in June. Currently, the program has pro-vided tennis training and equipment to more than 50 disad-vantaged children. Our 2007 year culminated with our annual meeting at The Greenbrier where our leadership recapped the year, applauded the team effort, and revealed the 2008 vision and plan. The West Virginia District’s 2008 vision is “no child left behind.” The District is making plans to bring a minimal level of tennis instruction to every child in our 35 counties’ public-school systems. It is incorporating teacher in-service, school assemblies, “on hands” physi-cal-education classes, and junior-team tennis into its plan. The vehicle for much of this will be the USTA’s Quickstart Tennis. The district’s staff, board, and volunteers and the WV Public Schools are joining hands to achieve tennis growth and diversity inclusion. While the district will place primary focus on Junior Team Tennis and the underlying pro-grams that lead to JTT, the District will maintain strong efforts to grow Adult Leagues and Junior and Adult Competitive Tournaments. The West Virginia District has worked diligently to reunite one of America’s famous re-sorts, The Greenbrier and the USTA. After a 10-year absence, The Greenbrier is again a USTA organizational member and a Mid-Atlantic Tournament site. Also, our newest indoor facility, Ridgeview in Morgantown, is host to important Mid-Atlantic tournaments. In conclusion, I would like to recognize the efforts of our staff under Executive Director Alice Ann Kammer-Brady’s leadership. I would like to recognize the volunteers and members in our programs for their participation. We, cumulatively and united, are the West Virginia District.
