Message from the Lord Mayor of MelbourneThe City of Melbourne is proud to support Australia’s largest fair trade and ethical business festival: Fair@Square. Designed to nourish the mind, body and soul, Fair@Square promotes ethical, sustainable and morally responsible behaviour. It also raises awareness of the impact our purchasing choices have on the lives of producers in some of the poorest parts of the world. Moral Fairground, a Melbourne based social enterprise founded in 2009, will be celebrating the values of ethical consumption with music, activities, sustainable cooking demonstrations, ethical fashion shows and activities for children. An interactive program with partners LUSH, Transitions Film Festival, DiMase Architects, The Toxic Fox and Australian Ethical promotes a joyous life that will help change the ecological footprint on our planet. Enjoy Fair@Square 2016!

Marlène Habib’s WorkshopThe workshop will be a space where you’ll get to explore story telling through movement and symbolism. Art therapy offers an alternative non-verbal means of communication where emotions and thoughts can be explored and contained within the symbols and images in a safe accepting environment. You do not need to be an artist, performer or expert.

Tanya Edlington’s WorkshopTanya Edlington has been telling stories since primary school when she told everyone that she had actually run away from the circus be-cause she was really a Russian princess and her real name was “Natasha”. She started tell-ing true stories when she studied journalism at university. Tanya enjoys the power of sto-ries to connect us as human beings and uses them in her creative work and performance as well as her work as a facilitator. Tanya’s work-shops will be focussed on discovery through stories and use improvisation methods.

Welcome to Fair@Square 2016Many inspiring businesses are showcased at the Festival this year and as a co-founder of the Ethical Enterprise Award, we’re proud to support the companies, social enterprises, and not-for-profits working to make a positive impact.

It’s no secret that there are great challenges facing the world today. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the changes we need to make to overcome things like climate change, human rights abuses and more. The political discourse has been slow moving to address these issues so far. But while it’s frustrating to see inaction from government and policy makers, it is equally inspiring to see the growing number of businesses and consumers addressing these issues at a ground level.Several years ago when this Festival started, ethics in business wasn’t well respected by the mainstream. Many customers didn’t know they could have both market-leading products while also doing good for the planet. Large scale companies, like Tesla and Ben & Jerry’s, weren’t making headlines for their ethics and most people didn’t think business had a role to play in making the world a better place. Today, that’s all changed. Consumers now expect businesses to act in ethical ways and are outraged when they find out otherwise. Here at the festival you’ll find local businesses that are leading the charge and have been for a number of years. As traditional companies move to more ethical business models, they’ll be looking at these homegrown innovators. It’s great to see such a strong community come together and I hope you enjoy the Festival.
