Friends,

“I don’t think that there’s anything worse than being ordinary.” This was Declan’s favorite line from one of his favorite movies, American Beauty, as well as his personal mantra. It also inspired the name of our annual celebration of his life, No Ordinary Evening.

Thank you for joining us at the 6th Annual No Ordinary Evening, and for helping us create and sustain Declan’s legacy. Declan took advantage of the opportunities presented to him and lived his life to the fullest. Tonight, we channel his bold and generous spirit to support the students of Horizons for Youth.

Horizons for Youth offers a comprehensive solution to educational inequality for over 250 Chicago students, providing scholarships, mentoring, tutoring, and valuable support services that would otherwise be out of reach. The organization’s goal is to give students the resources and life skills they need to be the first in their families to graduate from college. Declan’s legacy lives on through the lives of the students at Horizons for Youth, as well as through Declan’s family and his many friends gathered here tonight.

Six years ago we established the Declan Drumm Sullivan Memorial Fund to remember Declan in a way that benefits others. The generosity of family, friends, and even strangers has allowed us to raise close to $4 million for charities like Horizons for Youth that serve our community.

We are deeply grateful for your continued support of the Declan Drumm Sullivan Memorial Fund and Horizons for Youth. Tonight, let us celebrate Declan and “Declan’s 84,” the group of Horizons for Youth students whose future looks brighter thanks to you. This is truly No Ordinary Evening!

No Ordinary Evening

At No Ordinary Evening, we honor one life, while positively impacting many others. The money raised tonight for the Declan Drumm Sullivan Memorial Fund will be channeled directly to educational and community service organizations that

are changing lives for the better. The primary beneficiary of the Fund and this evening’s event is Horizons for Youth, a Chicago organization with a 25-year record of preparing students from underserved neighborhoods for success in college and beyond.

Tonight’s theme, 1001Nights, recalls the stories told by the Persian princess, Scheherazade, to save her life and win the heart of a king. Her tales of Aladdin, Ali Baba, Sinbad, and Abu remind us of Declan — the storyteller — and his vivid imagination. So, rub a lamp, make a wish, and climb aboard your magic carpet for our version of an Arabian night!

Horizons for Youth

Whatever It TakesHorizons for Youth enables Chicago students of all academic ability levels to become the first in their families to graduate from college. They are the only organization in Chicago providing wraparound services and tuition scholarships for children at both the elementary and high school levels. At the college level, they provide key interventions to enable students to overcome common barriers to earning a four-year degree. Components of their comprehensive program include:

• Need-based tuition scholarships • One-on-one mentoring• Individualized tutoring • Counseling• Summer Academic Program • Monthly enrichment outings• College application and • High school application

Rewriting Futures for Chicago KidsHorizons for Youth serves 250 kindergarten through college students who are:

• Of all academic ability levels• From low-resource neighborhoods on Chicago’s south and west

sides — including Austin, Englewood, Humboldt Park, Lawndale, and Pilsen

• From families earning on average $25,000 per year

The Horizons for Youth DifferenceHorizons for Youth proves that with the proper support, students can defy the odds. Their results speak for themselves. Whereas nationally, only 9% of children from low-income families will earn a college degree, 86% of their High School Program graduates have either earned their college degree or are on track to graduate — a nearly tenfold increase.
