Speaker ProfilesApril 16-17, 2015 InterContinental Singapore

Tony Emms joined the U.S. Dairy Export Council in 2014 as a regional director in its Southeast Asian office, focused on strategy, trade policy, market insight and access. In this role, Emms recommends strategies and communicates actionable market intelligence to support the objectives of U.S. dairy exporters and their customers. He has worked as a senior strategy consultant and researcher in the dairy sector since 1992, assisting clients build larger and stronger marketing positions in dairy ingredients and finished products across Asia. He formerly led the consulting firm Stanton Emms Strategy Consultants, specializing in the food, beverage and agri-food industries in East Asia, with a client base including multinationals, small businesses, governments and cooperators. Educated in the UK, he holds an FCA (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) and is also a full member of the Singapore Institute of Directors (MSID).

Christopher Rittgers has been assigned to Kuala Lumpur as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s agriculture attaché since 2011. His previous USDA postings include Port au Prince, Baghdad, Cairo, Jakarta and Madrid. Rittgers first joined USDA in 1991 and spent his first four years with the agency as a grains and livestock analyst. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand working as an agriculture extensionist from 1986-1989. He has a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy from Iowa State University and a Master of Science in Agriculture Economics from Michigan State University. He is from a grain and livestock farm in north-central Iowa.

Tom Suber directs all the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) programs to build global markets for U.S. ingredients and dairy products. His work in the dairy industry began in 1990 when he set up the National Dairy Board’s export program, and he was hired to lead USDEC when Dairy Management Inc. created it in 1995. With past positions in the private sector, he has more than 30 years of international trade experience. Suber serves as chair of the U.S. government’s Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee (ATAC) for Trade in Animal Products. He is vice-chair of the Food & Agricultural Export Alliance. Suber has a master’s degree from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and a bachelor’s degree in history and Asian studies from Colorado State University.

Marc Beck directs the U.S. Dairy Export Council’s (USDEC’s) strategy and insights program, which formulates market entry tactics, tracks marketplace dynamics, forecasts global dairy demand, leverages nutrition science developments and offers technical assistance to help U.S. suppliers move forward in the global arena. He also serves as the staff lead for the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy’s initiative on risk management and volatility. His past experiences include: senior trader with M.E. Franks Inc., vice president and general manager, Ronald A. Chisholm Inc., and international market manager, Connell Rice & Sugar Co. In addition to having lived in Brazil and Nigeria, Beck has had global business experiences through extensive international travel in Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, the Far East, the Pacific and Africa. Beck was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and has a bachelor’s degree in international business with course work toward an M.B.A.

Laura MusyGlobal Sourcing Manager Dairy Ingredients, Danone Nutricia Early Life Nutrition

Laura Musy is in charge of global milk powder purchasing for Danone Early Life Nutrition and is currently based in Singapore. Danone Early Life Nutrition is a leading infant formula manufacturer, setting high standards for the industry and dairy ingredients suppliers worldwide. Musy leads several strategic projects for her company, including the reshaping of the global supply base and introduction of U.S. suppliers. She joined Danone in 2009 in Amsterdam before moving to Southeast Asia in February 2012. A French national, Musy has been living abroad for the last nine years.

Derik RobinsonChief Financial Officer and General Manager, High Desert Mil

Since joining High Desert Milk in 2010, Derik Robinson has worked to develop the company’s global marketing strategy, as well as launched expansion projects, including the new butter facility inaugurated in 2013. Robinson is also currently the treasurer of the Idaho Milk Processors Association and chairman of the U.S. Dairy Export Council’s Global Ingredients Committee. Previously, Robinson worked for both American Express and JetBlue Airways and lived, studied, and worked abroad as an international commercial analyst for the Idaho State Department of Commerce in their Mexico Trade Office. He holds a Bachelors of Science in Management and Human Resources as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from the University of Idaho. He also earned an M.B.A. in finance through the University of Arizona and a master’s in global management through the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Warren ClimoDirector Export Cheese Sales & Marketing, Hilmar Cheese Company

Warren Climo has worked in the dairy industry for most of his life. Born and raised in New Zealand on a dairy farm, he studied agricultural science at Massey University. After initially teaching at the university, he has worked for the last 28 years for dairy exporting manufacturers in roles encompassing marketing, sales, strategic, technical and quality assurance functions. He has been working for Hilmar Cheese Company since 2002, initially in the export of lactose for use in milk powders, infant formula, pharmaceuticals, food and confectionery. In 2011, he took on a new role to develop the export markets for Hilmar’s cheese. Although Hilmar already manufactures over 420,000 MT /year, the opportunities in the export markets are seen as a key growth area for the future.

Margaret Speich leads industry communications at the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC), elevating and communicating the importance and value of USDEC export and ingredient market development initiatives and programs. Since 2005 when she joined USDEC, she also has been responsible for USDEC membership that now consists of more than 100-plus cooperative, processor, exporter, trading company and end-user members. Her duties also include directing USDEC communication response efforts to overseas issues through various issues management/crisis preparedness programs. Previously, Speich led award-winning communications programs, including global media relations efforts for two leading U.S. agricultural sectors. Her work in this area garnered several awards, including two prestigious Silver Anvil awards from the Public Relations Society of America. Having grown up on a Wisconsin dairy farm, Speich has been involved in dairy and agriculture all her life. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Margaret SpeichSenior VP, Strategic and Industry Communications, U.S. Dairy Export Council

In 1995, Corey Geiger joined Hoard’s Dairyman, a leading U.S. dairy producer magazine serving dairy farmers and their business advisors since 1885. He began as associate editor, being promoted successively and now serves as the lead editor on the 11-member editorial team that publishes editions in English, Spanish and Japanese and has subscribers in 80 countries. In his current role, Geiger’s focuses include preparing editorial commentary and global dairy market information. He also is responsible for the magazine’s coverage of milk marketing, dairy policy, dairy product promotion, reproduction, genetics, business planning, and production costs. Additionally, Geiger is involved with the magazine’s Hoard’s Dairyman Farm and maintains close ties and ownership in his home dairy farm which dates back to 1867. A native of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, he holds degrees in agricultural economics and dairy science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

John Brubaker, an Idaho dairyman, is involved in a number of dairy industry organizations. He has served on the United Dairymen of Idaho board since 2010 and the United Dairy Industry Association board since 2013. As part of his membership on the Dairy Management Inc. board, he serves on the exports and ingredients committee. He also serves on an advisory board for Glanbia Foods. Glanbia has nominated him five times for the annual milk quality award in the state of Idaho. In 2013, he was named Glanbia’s Quality Patron of the Year. He has served on the boards of the Idaho Holstein Association and Idaho DHIA. Brubaker owns Knott-Run Farms in Buhl, Idaho, which includes a 300-cow dairy, corn, alfalfa and wheat.

For decades, Harold Shaulis has provided distinguished service to the dairy industry. He has served nearly 25 years on the board of the Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program where he currently is president. He is a dairy farmer spokesman for the Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association. He is on the board of the United Dairy Industry Association and Dairy Management Inc. (DMI). On the DMI board, he serves on the exports and ingredients committee. His involvement in the local community includes serving as president of the Somerset County Farm Bureau and on the board of the Somerset County Ag Advisory Committee. In 2015, he was elected to the Pennsylvania Dairy Hall of Fame. He, his wife Carol and son Aaron operate a 120-cow dairy in Somerset, Pennsylvania.

Renae De Jager and her husband, Art, run a 3,200-cow dairy in Chowchilla, California. She is co-owner of a winery and agri-tourism site in Merced, California. De Jager was appointed to the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board in 2010 and re-appointed to a second term in 2013. As a board member for Dairy Management Inc., which manages the national dairy checkoff program, she is chairman of the exports and ingredients committee. She currently serves on the California Milk Advisory Board. The agri-tourism site is known as The Vista Ranch and Cellars. It includes an event center, six-acre vineyard, winery, wine-tasting room and vegetable gardens. Visitors have come from 129 countries around the world. It is an opportunity for De Jager to share a positive message about agriculture.

Kima Simonson, a dairy farmer from eastern Washington, is a tireless advocate for the dairy industry. She was appointed to the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board in 2012 and has since been re-appointed to a second term. As part of her membership on the Dairy Management Inc. board, she serves as vice chairman of the exports and ingredients committee. Simonson is also active on the state level. Since 1994, she has served as a Washington Dairy Products Commission Board member and was its chairwoman twice. In 2003, she received the Mel H. Ehlers Distinguished Washington State University Dairy Booster Award for volunteering time and support to WSU programs. Simonson and her husband, Robert, own and operate a 160-acre family dairy farm near Deer Park, Washington.

Angélique Hollister joined the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) in 2000 as a marketing coordinator. Today, she leads the Council’s cheese and consumer products promotional efforts to expand the volume and value of U.S. exports. During her 15 years at USDEC, she has worked to increase foreign buyers’ and end-users’ awareness and usage of U.S. cheese through the implementation of impactful marketing events and communication strategies. Being a French native, she inherently loves cheese and truly enjoys demonstrating to the world the heritage and high quality of the hundreds of cheeses made in the United States. Hollister holds a bachelor’s degree in international business and marketing from Efficom, a French business school, and in 2005 was named by the American Food and Ag Exporter magazine as one of the 40 under 40 up and coming agricultural export leaders.

Jaime Castaneda is currently the executive director of the Consortium for Common Food Names (CCFN). In this position, he works with countries around the world to defend the right of consumers, buyers and producers of food products to continue the ability to use a variety of generic names. In addition to those responsibilities, Castaneda handles international trade affairs and global policy strategy for the U.S. dairy industry. He has over 30 years of experience in food and agriculture. His background also includes an extensive knowledge of U.S. agricultural policy including jobs with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy and in marketing with the U.S. poultry and oilseed industries as well as the agricultural division of a leading U.S. pharmaceutical company.

Mark Todd’s love for cheese began when he stumbled upon artisan varieties in Sonoma County, California (USA). Now a tireless promoter of U.S. specialty cheese, he has made it the focus of his professional culinary life and is working to introduce it to the widest possible audience. For over a decade, Todd has worked extensively with the U.S. Dairy Export Council, the California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB) and the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (WMMB), among many others. He has also written or been involved with the writing of several manuals and collateral pieces dedicated to cheese education and the pairing of beverages and cheese. Todd is a founding member of the California Artisan Cheese Guild.

Pauline Chan has extensive experience in developing scientific programs and facilitating dialogue between scientists, government regulators and industry to address regional and international issues in nutrition, food safety and health. Chan serves as director of scientific programs in the Southeast Asian region for the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), a global non-profit organization that seeks to improve public health through the advancement of science in the areas of nutrition and food safety. She is based in Singapore where the regional office covers the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries, Australia and New Zealand. A registered dietitian (R.D.) with the American Dietetic Association, Chan received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and her master’s degree in nutrition and dietetics from New York University (USA).

Kristi Saitama is the vice president, export ingredients marketing, for the U.S. Dairy Export Council. Saitama works in collaboration with USDEC’s network of overseas offices to activate programs which boost international food and beverage manufacturers’ interest and success in importing, using and innovating with U.S. dairy ingredients. Her efforts include championing the nutritional, functional, sensory and supply security advantages of U.S. dairy ingredients while also cutting the learning curve on technical and knowledge barriers that hinder usage. Previously, Saitama focused on the Asia/Russia region for the Almond Board of California and worked for Snow Brand America. She received an M.S.F.S. from Georgetown University in Washington, DC (USA) and a B.A. in economics, international studies and Japanese from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California (USA).

Vikki Nicholson is the senior vice president, global marketing, for the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC), where she has worked since 2009. She leads USDEC’s global marketing efforts to promote U.S. cheese and consumer products overseas and dairy ingredients for the U.S. and export markets. Prior to joining USDEC, Nicholson worked for Kraft Foods Inc. for 19 years in various business units and functions, including marketing director at Kraft Food Ingredients. In addition to her 11 years of business-to-business marketing experience in ingredients and foodservice, Nicholson has a technical research background in product development, emulsion and lipid technology, and flavor encapsulation. She has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a mathematics minor from Howard University and a master’s in marketing and business policy from the University of Chicago. Nicholson is also a U.S. patent holder in micro-encapsulation technology.

Kimberlee “KJ” Burrington is Dairy Ingredients Applications Coordinator for the Wisconsin Center for Dairy Research in Madison, Wisconsin (USA). Her current research projects focus on dairy ingredient functionality and applications with an emphasis on yogurt, nutrition bars, and protein enhanced beverages. She has over 25 years of experience in product development, including past positions at Ridgeview Industries, the Keebler Company, and as a consultant to the baking industry before joining CDR. She has also served as a contributing editor for Food Product Design magazine and has authored several technical reports, articles and monographs about U.S. dairy ingredients and their usage applications. She is a Certified Food Scientist and a member of the Center of Excellence Committee of the American Dairy Products Institute. Burrington has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Food Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Peter Gutierrez joined Agri-mark, Inc., a dairy cooperative based in the northeastern United States, in 2003. Agri-Mark is the 2013 winner of Dairy Foods Magazine’s Tom Camerlo Exporter of the Year award. Gutierrez travels the world on behalf of the co-op’s members to build new, profitable markets for Agri-Mark’s whey protein concentrate, whey permeate and nonfat dry milk. He is also Agri-Mark’s representative to the Dairy America Board of Directors and is an active participant in several dairy associations and committees. Prior to joining Agri-Mark, Gutierrez, had a long career in the U.S. food industry with positions in leading companies including Ralston Purina, Jerome Foods, DMV and Century Foods. Originally from Colombia, Gutierrez holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Business Management from the University of Wisconsin.

Dalilah “Dali” Ghazalay joined USDEC in 2014 as regional director of USDEC’s office in Southeast Asia, focused on marketing, programs and operations. In this role, she plans and executes marketing programs and trade engagement initiatives, helping buyers and end-users in the region to dialogue and forge new partnerships with U.S. dairy suppliers. Ghazalay’s career experience in agriculture spans over 18 years, most recently serving as director of program management and communications of the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC). In this senior management role at USSEC, she was responsible for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of market development activities, harnessing her extensive event management experience to carry out successful activities such as trade missions, seminars and one-on-one meetings. Ghazalay holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of South Australia and a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Western Kentucky University.
