The Norton High School 50th Class Reunion Committee

welcomes you to the The Final Fling!

As a class, we have met every five years beginning with our 10 year reunion in 1976. At that time, we were celebrating our new adulthood – the start of families, being in the workplace and being responsible for our futures. Over the years, we have met to renew old acquaintances and to get to know those classmates we didn’t know in school. We have realized that school cliques, popularity in high school, and finan-cial capability during high school don’t really mean anything. We have taken what life’s twists and turns have given us and did our best! We are Panther strong!

Let’s take a moment to remember classmates who are no longer with us. Then let’s celebrate life and its future. For some of us, our physical well being may be running a little light – but each morning, the sun comes up and shines on us! We are Norton Panthers after all!!!

This year’s reunion committee make-up has been different than in the past since our fearless leader Patti Vargo Szempruch is no longer with us. Very excitedly, we have had new folks join the group bringing great enthusiasm and wonderful ideas. Our meetings began in July, 2015. Each member has worked tirelessly toward the planning of our weekend – spending many hours tracking down classmates, designing our webpage, facebook page, the booklet, and planning each evening’s de-tails. We hope you enjoy the Final Fling weekend!!! Let’s have some fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best regards,

Committee members:Ron Doles Doris Kerby WilliamsCathy Kolaida Smith Barbara Kunkle BellLinda Leksan Garey Joni Opeka StoparKristina Randles Schotzinger Cheryl Reder AndersonJoan Rhoades Steve StruharikPaul Suloff Paul Tople

History Norton Township was originally part of Wolf Creek Township. It was organized as a separate township in April 1818. It was named for Birdseye Norton, one of the Connecticut proprietors. It was first settled by James Robinson in 1818, who came from New York and built a cabin on Wolf Creek. Norton Township, when first settled was part of the Western Reserve. In making grants of land to the people in the Western Reserve, the Connecticut Land Company set aside certain areas in each Township to be used for public schools. The first two schools in Norton Town-ship were built in 1831, and they were only open during the winter months when there wasn’t much work to be done on the farms. In 1851, the State Uniform School Law was enacted. This law provided for both elementary and secondary schools. Any student who got through elementary school and wanted to continue their educa-tion in high school had to pay tuition to either Western Star Academy or to the private school at Norton Center, was held in the big white house on the corner of Route 21 and Route 224. In 1892, a two room, wooden high school was built where the (former) Norton Junior High now stands. The first class graduated in 1895, with only three members in it. In 1914 the wooden building was torn down, and the first part of the Norton Junior High building was built. In 1936-37 a new addition was added to the building. The building housed the high school until 1953 when it was moved into the north wing of the yellow brick building located on the northwest corner of the Norton Center Campus. The south wing of the building was added and occupied during the 1959-60 school year. An-other addition was added in 1975. The Norton Primary School was built in 1956, and the cur-rent Middle School was built in 1966.

The Alma Mater1st verse:

When the sun bends low its radiance, While the storm clouds roll, Norton High, we’ll always love you, You inspire our soul.

2nd verse: Walking with a stride of honor To the road ahead, Norton High, we will salute you, With our white and red.

Refrain: Alma Mater, Alma Mater, Sing from pole to pole, Hear our song so clearly ringing Til we reach our goal.

Here’s a picture of Jean, taken at the MD Statehouse with Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, at the recent signing of the landmark Maryland Lyme Disease bill. Jean was the spark and catalyst for getting this legislation going. She worked persistently with our MD delegate, Kathy Afzali, to alert her to the problem, and then gave her a lot of information on problems getting proper treatment for Lyme disease, based on Jean’s first hand experience and that of many others in the community of Lyme sufferers with whom she communicates. The bill had bipartisan support. I am very, very proud of Jean. It’s a long story, but Lyme sufferers’ lives will be better because of this bill, and other bills to follow.- SteveDave Smith is recreat-ing one of his long time high school memories with this 1964 Dodge. It is a recreation of the car he drove in high school and raced on Rt. 21 South. He has been working on the car for two-years and hopes to bring it to the Reunion. The car has a 572 Hemi engine, and dyno’d at 740hp.
