The Class Reunion by Jo David Stockwell

Every few years, as summertime nears, An announcement arrives in the mail. "A reunion is planned; it'll be really grand, Make plans to attend without fail". I'll never forget the first time we met, We tried so hard to impress. We drove fancy cars, smoked big cigars, And wore our most elegant dress. My was quite an affair; the whole class was there. It was held at a fancy hotel. We wined, and we dined, and we acted refined, And everyone thought it was swell. The men all conversed about who had been first To achieve great fortune and fame. Meanwhile, their spouses described their fine houses And how beautiful their children became. The homecoming queen, who once had been lean, Now weighed in at one-ninety-six.

The jocks who were there had all lost their hair, And the cheerleaders could no longer do kicks. No one had heard about the class nerd Who'd guided a spacecraft to the moon; Or poor little Jane, who's always been plain, She married a shipping tycoon. The boy we'd decreed "most apt to succeed" Was serving ten years in the pen, While the one voted "least" now was a priest; Just shows you can be wrong now and then. They awarded a prize to one of the guys Who seemed to have aged the least. Another was given to the grad who had driven

The farthest to attend the feast. They took a class picture, a curious mixture Of beehives, crew cuts and wide ties. Tall, short, or skinny, the style was the mini, You never saw so many thighs. At our next get-together, no one cared whether They impressed their classmates or not. The mood was informal, a whole lot more normal, By this time we'd all gone to pot. It was held out-of-doors, at the lake shores, We ate hamburgers, coleslaw, and beans.

Then most of us lay around in the shade, In our comfortable T-shirts and jeans. By the fortieth year, it was abundantly clear, We were definitely over the hill. Those who weren't dead had to crawl out of bed, And be home in time for their pill. And now I can't wait--they've set the date, Our fiftieth is coming, I'm told. It should be a ball, they've rented a hall At the Shady Rest Home for the old. Repairs have been made on my hearing aid, My pacemaker's been turned up on high. My wheelchair is oiled, and my teeth have been boiled, And I've bought a new wig and glass eye. I'm feeling quite hearty, and I'm ready to party, I'm gonna dance 'til dawn's early light. It'll be lots of fun. but I just hope that there's one Other person who can make it that night.

For 20 years I worked in Basic Research in the National Cancer Institute Laboratories. I have also worked in a drug discovery company. Now I am working in a cancer diagnostic company. I have fond memories of playing clarinet in the band with Mr. Friday as director. Also, one of my best memories is having Vijay, the American Field Service exchange student, live with us. I still keep up contact with her. I saw her in India last Fall and she has

been to the US a few times. Her daughter lives in Chicago. My favorite song is Bridge Over Troubled Waters by Simon & Garfunkel.

My husband, Larry and I have two sons and three grandchildren. I have worked as a medical secretary, cashier, bank teller for 26 years and am now retired. Memories are I went to a hootenanny concert in the gym and really enjoyed it. Also I went to Philadelphia on a school trip to see How the West Was Won.

We have one daughter and I’ve worked 37 years as a bus driver for Althouse Transportation. I walk one to four miles each day. Sorry I won’t be able to attend the reunion but will be working and watching our grandsons play football.

My wife Francene Boyd Cox and I have 3 children: Erika, Robert and Krystal. And we have 7 grand-children: Anthony, Alex, Alyssa, Briana, Mackenzie, Makayla and Tyler. I retired from Bethlehem Steel and am selling real estate. Sue & I have been married 49 years in December. No children but 3 adopted grandchildren. 1 is a sophomore at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, the 2nd is a freshman at the University of Washington in Seattle & the 3rd is a freshman at Wyomissing High School in Reading. I spent the early years employed by Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp going back and forth between Coatesville & Pittsburgh. I took my early retirement in 1978 & started a small sporting goods business. Sold the business after 20 years, tried retired life but retired life just didn’t work for me. I started a sportswear company in the late 90’s & am still active in it today. I travel for work a fair amount. We have clients all over the country, so it requires a little more travel than I would like at this point in time; but life is good. Memories: I remember how I found every excuse to take off school during those high school years and now with almost 50 years in the workforce, I have probably not missed 4 or 5 days in all of those years. Military none, was drafted 3 times but failed the physical. That was hard to do during Vietnam. Spouse, Judy M. Finigan. We were married16 years in May, but we were engaged 10 years before that. Between Judy & me we have 7 children, 24 grandchildren & 10 great-grandchildren, since coming to Florida in 1979. Been through 1 divorce, worked 21 years at a medical needle manufacturer. 8 years at Crane Cams in Daytona Beach and 2 ½ years driving a box truck for R.E. Michels, a wholesale dealer of air, heating & refrigeration equipment, parts & supplies. After retiring in 2014, I wonder how I found time to work. Besides my honey-do list, I work on old cars; I own a 1937 Oldsmobile & a 1939 DeSoto. Do some wood butchering & insult a piano once in a while. My memories are of mixed dance class in gym & Mr. G’s class on hypnotism by Jeff Humpton. I once stayed after school & watched the cheerleaders practice & Bev Cheek came up to me & asked me to take her home to pick something up. So my dad’s 1953 Plymouth and I drove her there and back. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Too many songs to list.

My wife, Janet and I have 2 daughters. Jessica is married to Michael Raber & their children are Zachary, 16 years old & Emma, 13 years old. Amy is married to Steve Nunemaker. Her daughter, Kayla is 20 & I am proud to say, serving in the U.S. Air Force! I have been in sales for most of my life and am currently working for Musselman Lumber. I am planning to retire in March and will then work for my wife who provides taxi service to the Amish Community, including trips to other states when they want to visit relatives or go on vacation. On our vacation we went to Mackinaw Island, which is in northern Michigan on Lake Huron. Access to the island is by ferry and all transportation on the island is by horse-drawn carriage or bicycle. Motorized vehicles were banned years ago because they startled the horses. Also went on a boat tour through the Soo Locks, which join Lake Superior & Lake Huron; very interesting! Then we spent 2 days in Frankenmuth, a small town that is known for its German roots.

The only change we have is our address. We sold the farm to our son and moved up the road. So we are trying to retire but my husband is down helping on the farm almost every day. Anyway trying to spend a lot of time In Huntingdon County at our mountain getaway and trying to keep up with our 12 grandkids’ sports and activities.

Worked as oncology RN, office manager and jack-of-all-trades for 4 physicians from 1974 until 2002, then relocated to Toms River and continued in oncology for private physician until my retirement in 2012. It was truly a great career for me and extremely rewarding and fulfilling. Since retiring I have filled in at my last office from time to time and take a cruise in the winter each year to the Caribbean as I hate the cold weather. Summer is great for me as I am only 20 minutes from the Jersey shore and I make it a point to sun myself once or twice a week. Memories: old age has cause me to gorget more than I remember. Friday nights in soneone’s kitchen having fun with the gang, shoofly pie at Dutch Haven after movies. Friday night dances and wonder friends! I love all the “oldies” from the 50s and 60s. I am so looking forward to catching up with everyone. Thanks to all for making this happen!

Was drafted 1966 but failed induction physical so did not go. Spouse: Edith Thompson Hagans. Children: 3, 1 boy & 2 girls. 4 grandchildren, 2 boys & 2 girls. Worked as a metal fabricator for 42 years and am now driving school bus for Althouse Transportation. Started singing in Gospel quartets in 1966 & started singing with my family in 1991. HFM has recorded 6 CD projects & a 7th one is almost completed. Was ordained in the ministry in 1994. Memories: Too numerous to remember all but always focus on the good ones & not the bad. Favorite songs: Lots of them but the songs that stick out in my mind are, I Saw Her Standing There by the Beatles & Gospel song, Surrender to the Everlasting Peace.

Husband is James (Rick) Groff. I have 2 children, Joel & Jamie & 2 step-children John and Vicki. Eight grandchildren, Rachel, Amanda, Payton, Charlee, Logan, Taylor, Paxson, & Tanner. Great-grandchildren, Kyle, Savannah & another one due in October. I worked as an assistant group supervisor in a preschool program for 32 years. Now I’m retired & babysit grandchildren several days a week. In our spare time we like to travel to Florida to visit our one son & his family. We also like to go on cruises. Our favorite island is Aruba. Memories: Our class trip to the World’s Fair in New York, square dancing with the boys in gym class and wearing those ugly green gym uniforms. My favorite songs would be hymns, The Lighthouse and Amazing Grace. I still like to listen to the 50’s & 60’s music whenever I get a chance.

U.S. Army 3 years, U.S. Coast Guard 23 years. Spouse: Barbara (she is from St. Louis but we met in Belgium). 2 girls & 1 grandson who graduates from high school 2016.Worked at Chrysler Corp in Newark, DE for a year, attended Penn State for 1 year, worked at Lukens Steel until I got drafted into the Army. Was in Belgium for 30 months where I worked at NATO Military Headquarters. I met and married Barbara Winkler who was also in the Army & from St. Louis, MO. After another 3 years working a couple of jobs, I joined the Coast Guard where I served for 23 years as an electronics technician. Coast Guard service took us to South Padre Island TX, NYC, Phoenix AZ, Rhode Island, Cleveland OH, Rhode Island again while stationed on a cutter homeported in Boston, then to Washington DC. We lived in Woodbridge VA for 20 years. I was on two different cutters, both homeported in Boston. Most of our patrols were in the Caribbean for drug & migrant interdiction, with some fisheries law enforcement in the North Atlantic & search & rescue work along the way. I got my BS degree in 1982 in Electronics Engineering. I retired from military service in the Coast Guard in 1997 & worked as a field service technician 1 year & then for the Navy for 2 years. In 2001 I took a civil service job with the Coast Guard as a project manager for installing classified computer systems on 39 CG cutters. I retired again in June 2010. Barb and I have been married for 46 years. We currently live near Charlotte NC. Lots of memories; We made a couple of big marijuana & cocaine busts in the Caribbean & Gulf of Mexico. We rescued 4 doctors off a sailboat near Puerto Rico because they were all too seasick to sail the boat. Once we had an encounter with a cold-war era Russian Navy ship off the coast of Virginia which involved steering on a collision course to force them to turn. My travels have taken me to all 50 states and many countries. I like oldies & country.

I’ve been married to Bruce for 30 years. We have 2 girls and 1 boy with 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. I’ve been a school bus driver for 34 years and still driving. Our biggest trip was to Switzerland 2 years ago. Too many songs to name.

Marcia, in a letter, was very grateful to receive the information about our reunion but cannot attend because she has an ailment with a test and doctor’s appointment the same day as the reunion. She spoke of her brothers and nephew glowingly. She also wished us to have fun at the reunion as I’m sure we will. pgk

Lenny and I have been married for 46 years and counting! We have 2 children: Doug who lives in Landsdale, PA with 2 of our grandchildren and Jes who lives in FL with 3 of our grandchildren. Attended Millersville University and received an AA from Goldey Beacom. Worked as a Human Resources assistant and executive assistant to the Owner and CEO of a timeshare company in Shawnee-on-Delaware, PA. Then retired when Lenny started up a hotel renovation company and we bought a farm in Forksville, PA near Williamsport. We completely renovated the farmhouse, tearing out plaster & lath, knocking walls down to make rooms larger and adding rooms. We did all this ourselves with help from a plumber and electrician. Then Jes had our first grandchild and we couldn’t stay away so we moved to FL where she was living. That was 14 years ago and we love it here. Now I watch my grandkids when Jes is working, loving every minute of it. Memories: basketball games, singing Harbor Lights with Linda Guiney Rice on the way home from a hockey game, winning a dance contest with Scott Cargill and finding the love of my life. Songs: Oldies, anything Beatles and Queen.

Retired from Synthes in 2013 when J&J purchased the company. Still running the flight department for the former owner. Planning on being semi-retired as of 12/31/15, but hope to continue to fly on a part-time basis. Memories: Because I forgot my algebra book, Miss Ake shook a ruler at me& threatened to “make me bleed” & then sent me to Bob Rentz’s office. He said, “McMinn, what do you want to be when you grow up?” And I told him I wanted to be a pilot. He leaned back in his chair & laughed & said, “McMinn, you’ll never be a pilot…I was a navigator in B-17’s during the war & you have to know math & you can’t even remember your algebra book.” I always regretted that I never had the chance to let him now that I had become a professional pilot in spite of his prediction. I’ve worked 7 years at Walter & Jackson, AP, Payroll, Board of Directors Admin tasks; 7 years credentialing & re-credentialing physicians to work at Brandywine Hospital; 7 years Auntie Anne’s corporate, assistant to VP of Franchising, Administrative Assistant to Research & Development; and 8 years as Executive Assistant to CFO at largest carriage museum in the country (FL). Currently retired. Most amazing thing I have seen: the miracle of my son & his wife seeing their much longed for baby girl after 8 years of childlessness. Favorite song is Redeemer by Nicole C. Married to John Myers since 1966 with 2 sons, Mark, & David (deceased). 2 grandsons, Alex 14 & Willem 10. I retired in 2009 after 32 years in banking. I found a new passion in caring for horses. I volunteer 6 mornings a week at Water Gap Stables in Christiana. We have 26 horses to care for. We ride 2 to 3 times a week, muck stalls, groom, fix fences, etc. I love it! John and I have started traveling with trips to France, Italy, Panama, Holland, Austria, Costa Rica, Alaska, Caribbean, the Mediterranean and California, Arizona & Florida. Never thought this kid from First Ave. Parkesburg would get to see so much of this world! Good memories of high school, include our pajama parties & going to the Green Lantern after the games for burgers and rickies (do you remember those tall drinks with little plastic monkeys hanging on the side?). Cheering at basketball games. Loved & still love the song, Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers, best slow song ever! Also loved the Beatles, Motown, Rolling Stones and Peter, Paul & Mary.

A battle with MS slowed me down in my late 20’s, but it has been in remission for years…I am one of the lucky ones. I have spent most of my life in banking, taking 3 years off to own & operate a local newspaper before returning to banking. I survived 3 bank robberies that weren’t very nice. My last position was Senior Vice President, Chief Credit Officer for a privately owned bank in West Chester. I retired at 63 to take care of my mother. She is now 97 & for the past 2 years resides in the skilled area of the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. She still knows me & for that I am most grateful. I have a vacation cottage at Mt. Gretna, PA that provides both fun & relaxation. The porch there is a place to WINE! Seeing my OHS girlfriends at lunch every month is wonderful. I do some golfing & love gardening, mainly flowers. I’ve done some traveling & plan to do more in the future. Visiting beaches is my favorite. I loved art class & had a crush on Mr. Bartoli. I also enjoyed school dances & still love to dance. The songs from our school years are the best…can’t beat The Supremes & Four Tops. I also loved the disco dancing era. I recently saw Cher in Las Vegas & she is incredible.

Spouse: Wayne still working at Hershey Medical Center as a Medical Technologist in the clinical lab. I worked as an RN in a number of areas through the years…hospitals, public school nurse, nursing home, private duty, home health nurse. I “retired” when we adopted our daughter but had worked about 22 years by that time. We traveled a number of places during all those years without children. Children: Erika age 24 adopted from Romania at 4 months old just graduated from North Park University, Chicago with a BA in Sociology. She has worked & wants to continue to work with young children who struggle due to a variety of issues. Kyle age 18 adopted from the USA as an infant. He will be a senior this coming year at Hershey Christian School. Keith age 17 adopted from Romania at 13 months old will be a junior this coming year at Bishop McDevitt High School. Memories: Playing at recess with Patty Gartley & Becky Goss at the 2-room schoolhouse in Cochranville; when my Dad died 2 weeks before we graduated, Mac Souders was the best…he was kind and made me laugh…that was so special; the fetal pigs we dissected in biology. Peggy Paxton wrote in my yearbook, “Don’t ever be a surgeon. I saw your pig.”

Presently I’m in Delaware, snowbird in winter and I visit my family in San Francisco. I go to casinos occasionally, watch classic movies, travel & camp & like trail walking & photography. Play many computer games on PC & play cards.
