this very special evening, your support is

very much appreciated.

In a world where every day we seem to

hear about the challenges of growing

up, there are a reducing amount of

opportunities for young people to truly

change their lives.

Every year thousands of children

and young people enjoy inspiring

experiences at YMCA Lakeside.

Evaluation of those experiences tell us

that for many their visit is life changing,

resulting in greater confidence, a greater

self-awareness and a wider perspective of

what life can offer.

Lakeside is a beacon of hope for many.

Since it opened in the 1950’s, more than

a million young people have discovered

the real benefits of the Lakeside

experience; a life-changing, life-

enhancing opportunity that helps to

realise their true potential. Now the

Lakeside Centre needs a major upgrade

to prepare it for the next generation of

young people who need the Lakeside

experience to help them transform

their lives.

We have achieved an awful lot in a

relatively small space of time to realise

our ambitions for Lakeside. The exciting

news is we have appointed contractors

and they have now started on site. So, our

vision is becoming a reality, but we still

need to secure the final slice of funding.

With that in mind, I hope you are able to

give generously tonight so Lakeside can

go on to help many more young people.

Windermere, YMCA Lakeside is

one of the largest professional

outdoor activity centres in the

country that works with schools,

youth groups, families and

businesses.

We provide high quality residential

and day experiences, all designed

to inspire young people to grow in

body, mind and spirit.

Through their experiences at

Lakeside – overcoming challenges,

defeating fears, changing

perceptions and supporting

others - our young people gain

skills and character traits that will

serve them throughout life. These

include hard work, resilience,

learning from both success

and failure, solving problems,

leadership, teamwork, being

knocked down and knowing you

can get straight back up again.

The Lakeside centre has

deteriorated since the 1990’s

due to a lack of capital funds for

investment at the site. Many of the

buildings have been in continual

use since the early 1950’s and are

simply worn out by the many

young people it has hosted.

So now a complete transformation

is needed if the centre is to survive

beyond the next few years and

make it fit for purpose.

We have worked hard to raise

almost 90% of the £6.8M we

need to create the Lakeside

Stoller Campus, a new world class

outdoor education centre that

will be a place of inspiration and

aspiration.

Simon RoganOver the past 25 years Simon has developed his distinctive and inventive cooking style that has led to awards, Michelin stars and worldwide acclaim.

Simon opened Aulis London in October 2017: by day an experimental development kitchen and by night an intimate eight-seater chef’s table. He has just opened a permanent site for cult pop-up Roganic in Marylebone this January. Simon Rogan holds 5 AA Rosettes at L’Enclume and 3 AA Rosettes at Rogan & Co.

Lisa Goodwin-AllenLisa Goodwin-Allen is Executive Head Chef at Northcote having taken the reins in October 2017, when Nigel Haworth stepped back to take up an ambassadorial role. Lisa became Head Chef in 2005 having worked at Northcote since 2001 when she was just 23 and has helped to maintain the restaurant’s Michelin star which it has held for over 20 years.

Lisa is passionate about using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients to incorporate her Lancashire roots into her creative dishes.

Simon Shaw - StarterSimon is a highly experienced and respected restaurateur with over 35 years of experience, most notably as Chef Patron of El Gato Negro and as Executive Head Chef at Harvey Nichols. Originally from Yorkshire, Simon rapidly worked his way through the ranks at some of the county’s finest establishments before becoming the first Head Chef at Harvey Nichols’ restaurant in Leeds. Simon is also known for promoting his style of modern Spanish cooking to a wider audience; he is truly driven by a passion for his craft.

Adam Reid - MainAdam appeared in the 2016 BBC2 Great British Menu series, and won a coveted place at a banquet at Westminster Palace to celebrate Great Britons of HM the Queen’s reign with his spectacular dessert - The Golden Empire. Adam took over the reins of The French in November 2016, following Simon Rogan’s departure from The Midland Hotel’s two restaurant operations. He has introduced new menus that showcase his own personal style of modern British cooking.

Andrew Green - DessertGlossop born and bred Andrew Green is the Executive Head Chef at The Lowry Hotel and although only 35 he combines vast experience running the dining operations at some of the North West’s busiest hotels. During his time at The Lowry Hotel, he has gained 2 AA Rosettes, been awarded Mentor of the Year at the Manchester Hotelier Association Awards and was a finalist in the prestigious Catey Awards for Chef of the Year.Andrews ethos is “Let the best ingredients speak of themselves”.

• Founder of largest veterinary practise in NW• President Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons• Chairman World Horse Welfare Charity• Awarded the Queens Gold Medal for Veterinary surgeons 2017• Presently NED the British Equestrian Federation• Past High Sheriff, presently Deputy Lieutenant.

Dr Johnson is chairman of World Horse Welfare – travelling internationally and lecturing on behalf of the charity, with a particular involvement in fund-raising, profile-enhancing and education. He is also chairman of the World Horse Welfare international committee and a regional representative for Vetlife, as well as being a Deputy Lieutenant for Lancashire.

After graduating from the University of Liverpool in 1969, Dr Johnson established an equine and farm animal practice in 1974 on the Fylde Coast. He then became involved in many other lines of work, lecturing at Myerscough College in Lancashire for 30 years, acting on the Agricultural Training Board and serving as RCVS president from 1993-94.

Dr Johnson was also an RCVS council member for 28 years (1986-98; 2000-16) and served on many RCVS committees.

This year the Queen’s Medal – the highest honour the College can bestow upon a veterinary surgeon – was presented to Dr Barry Johnson for his years of service to clinical practice, veterinary education and public service – including 28 years on RCVS Council and his position as High Sheriff of Lancashire from 2014 to 2015.

Reading the citation for Barry, Chris said: “His contributions to education, in particular, within the College were especially notable. He travelled to educational establishments all over the world to ensure that they were operating to the highest possible standards for accreditation by the RCVS”.
