It’s all good and it’s what people do for fun in GrantsPass when the sun bears down in the summer.

The Rogue River offers a multitude of water activities forthe hard-core and soft-core tastes, much of it near mainroads.

It has lots of fun, intermediate whitewater between LostCreek Reservoir and Grave Creek, then more demandingrapids in the famed Wild Section, which requires a permitbelow Grave Creek.

The most-used section is downstream of Grants Pass,between the Applegate River and Grave Creek, theBureau of Land Management’s Recreational section. Herefishermen, floaters and Hellgate Excursions jetboats oftenshare the water. This section alone draws more than700,000 visitors a year, including all vehicle and rivertraffic.

Merlin is the center of summer fun. Those who need torent rafts or inflatable kayaks may do so at RogueWilderness and Orange Torpedo, both on Merlin-GaliceRoad.

Galice Resort, about 10 miles downriver, is another food-

equipment-entertainment hotbed for rafters, with ahistoric building and large deck.

Equipment may be rented in Grants Pass at U-Save onRogue River Highway.

The Oregon State Marine Board requires all childrenages 12 and under to wear life jackets at all times whilefloating the river.

In addition, each raft, kayak or any other floating craftmust have a life jacket on board for each adult. As of2010, when rafting Class 3 rapids or higher the life jacketmust be worn at all times by adults.

Rafters are strongly urged to wear life jackets at all timeswhile floating the Rogue River, to avoid being one of theRogue’s annual drowning victims, the vast majority ofwhom didn’t wear the life jacket.

To keep things simple, adult rafters should considertaking the life jacket off only in dead slow areas, to besafe.

There’s plenty of water to wet afishing line in and around GrantsPass and Josephine County, at alltimes of the year.

The Rogue River’s steelhead and salmon can be caught year-round somewhere between GoldBeach and Lost Creek Reservoir,depending on the timing andconditions.

The lower Rogue is best known for the famed “half-pounder”steelhead unique to the region, that run from 12 to 18 inches andenter the river a year earlier thanmost adult steelhead. The half-pounder fishing peaks in summerand fall, when river flows are attheir lowest and clearest, and fliesmay be used.

By mid-spring, the chinook areoccasionally biting around GrantsPass, and in early summer theattention shifts to Shady Cove andabove. Summer steelhead can beSummer fun!

had from June through October,and September and Octoberprovides a nice overlap of fallchinook, which bring boats to GoldBeach in August.

If the rains come, the slowestmonths tend to be November andDecember.

The Applegate and Illinois rivers alsoprovide winter steelhead angling.

Open year-round, Lake Selmacsports good-sized largemouthbass, with a limit of one per day asa trophy lake.

Smallmouth bass, largemouthbass, and trout dominate the catchat Applegate Reservoir, 45 milessouth of Grants Pass. The OregonDepartment of Fish and Wildlifehas also dumped excess hatcherysteelhead in the lake at times.Speed is limited to no-wake, orputt-putt trolling.

Hikers and cyclists of all abilities will findmany options for enjoying the stunningscenery of Southern Oregon.

The City of Grants Pass provides detailedtrail information at visitgrantspass.org.Here are a few easy favorites:

Limpy Creek Trail is a one-mile loop trailwith a waterfall and creek crossing. Itfeatures beautiful foliage, and there arebenches along the trail. To get there, takeRedwood Highway southwest fromGrants Pass to Riverbanks Road and takethat to Limpy Creek Road. Follow LimpyCreek Road for about three miles to thetrailhead.

Cathedral Hills is located south of GrantsPass. Take Williams Highway to SouthEspey Road and turn left. The trailhead isat the end of the road. There are multipletrail systems for hiking, mountain bikingand horseback riding. While some of thetrails are challenging, the Backside Looptrail is only one mile with a couple ofgrade changes.

Burned Timber Interpretive Trail is a loop thatis about two miles long with gentleslopes. It’s a good family hike, but therealso is the danger of poison oak. The bigleaf and vine maple provide a spectacularshow of color in the fall. From GrantsPass, take Interstate 5 north to the Merlinexit at mile marker 61. Follow the Merlin-Galice Road, and then turn left on

Primary Forest Route 25. Then, turnleft on road 2500-35 across a concretebridge just past the five mile marker.

From there, it’s less than a mile tothe parking area and trailhead.

Waters Creek Trail offers two options. Theeasier one is a loop that is about a milelong. It can accommodate wheelchairsand has benches. Branching off that trailis a three-mile loop that is fraught withpoison oak, so be forewarned. Get thereby taking the Redwood Highway southfrom Grants Pass for about 14 miles. Turnright onto Waters Creek Road. The roadshrinks down to one lane of gravel. Thetrailhead is on the right side of the roadand a parking area is on the left.

Eight Dollar Mountain Botanical Wayside Trailis unique because growing beside thetrail are Darlingtonia, a rare carnivorousplant. The short wayside trail is alsowheelchair accessible. It’s located aboutthree miles south of Selma. Turn right onEight Dollar Mountain Road and travelalmost a mile to the wayside.

Let’s tal k about the weather...Although you wouldn’t know it from last summer’sheat wave, the climate’s pretty good in Grants Pass.

It says so on the arched sign over Sixth Street, whichwent up in 1920. The original sign stayed until 1941,when it moved to Riverside Park, before coming downin 1958 because of construction of the Seventh StreetBridge. The current sign was erected on the original spot on Sixth Street in 1977.

In the summer of 2014, city officials may haveconsidered removing it once again when the mercurysoared into triple digits a record 23 times, including 15times in July when the average high temperature wasover 98 degrees. It was the hottest summer on record inGrants Pass.

But over time, the climate in Grants Pass falls into ahappy medium between Eugene and Redding.Eugene’s too wet, Redding’s too hot, but Grants Passis just right.

Grants Pass gets about 196 days of sunshine a year,with an annual rainfall of 31.8 inches.

The average high temperature in July, the hottestmonth, is right around 91 degrees.

As the story goes, one day in1874 a young man named ElijahDavidson was hunting in theSiskiyou Mountains southeast ofGrants Pass when his dogchased a bear into a hole in thehillside.

That was the discovery of whattoday is known as Oregon CavesNational Monument, and you toocan do just what Davidson did140 years ago — take a peekinside, only with much betterlighting, better footing and atour guide.

Entry to the monument is free,and there are a number of hikingtrails in the area. Visitors canstay at the historic Chateaulodge, which has 23 rooms.Camping in the area is alsoavailable.

The real attraction, of course, isthe caves. Guides lead visitorson a moderately strenuousascent 200 feet into the hillside,through narrow shafts and intoimmense, awe-inspiringchambers that were once madeof limestone but have beentransformed into marble overthousands of years by the steadydrip-drip of acidic rainwater.

The season runs from mid-March through Nov. 1. Guidedtours are available from 10 a.m.to 3 p.m. March 21 through May22; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 23through Sept. 7; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sept. 8 to Oct. 12; and then from10 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Nov. 1.

Tours are $10 for those 17 andolder; $7 for those 16 andyounger. Cash is recommended, asthe park sometimes has difficultieswith its credit card system. Theminimum height required toparticipate in the tour is 42 inches.The 90-minute tour includes 500 stairs stretched out over thecourse of half a mile. The totalelevation gain is 230 feet.

Reservations are required fortwo other types of tours: off-trailtours through the caves andthose done by candlelight. Callahead for more details or visitwww.nps.gov/orca.

Reach the Oregon CavesNational Monument fromGrants Pass by taking RedwoodHighway to Cave Junction and

turning left on Highway 46. Theroute is well marked. It is a solid20 miles or so from CaveJunction, much of it hairpinturns as you climb into theSiskiyous.

APPLEGATE TRAIL INTERPRETIVECENTER MUSEUM. Visitors canlearn about the Applegate Trailand the people who used it tojourney west to Oregon.

The museum is located just offInterstate 5 at exit 71, 14 milesnorth of Grants Pass. Built in1920, the Grave Creek CoveredBridge is just up the road from

the interpretive center — youcan’t miss it.

The center is open Friday,Saturday and Sunday, May 1through September. Hours are10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

GOLDEN GHOST TOWN. Locatedseveral miles east of Wolf Creekalong Coyote Creek Road, this former mining settlementfeatures an abandoned church, a store and other buildings,perched above the valley whereminers once toiled.

At its peak, the 19th centurymining town of Golden washome to 100 people and servedas a hub for many others who worked the land in moreremote locations. The town wasdistinguished by its lack ofsaloons in the town center, itstwo active churches and thelarge orchard established by itsfounding families.

Today, the site is owned by thestate and is listed on theNational Register of HistoricPlaces. Visitors can explore theremaining settlements at the 5-acre Golden State Heritage Site,which features an interpretivedisplay. There is no fee to visit,and there are no restrooms.

GREAT CATS WORLD PARK. Lions,tigers and leopards are among 18species of great cats greetingvisitors at this 10-acre park at27919 Redwood Highway, abouta mile south of Cave Junction.

The park is open daily from 10a.m. to 6 p.m. Memorial Dayweekend through Labor Day;check the website for off-seasonhours. The park is home to about45 cats, which range in size froma 6-pound African wildcat to a500-pound white tiger. Tours areabout 90 minutes. Admission is$14 for adults, $12 for those 65and older, $10 for ages 4 to 12.Children 3 and under are free.

HELLGATE JETBOAT EXCURSIONS.Some 85,000 passengers a yearenjoy an exhilarating trip downthe scenic Rogue River onHellgate’s wide-beamed jetboats,which make multiple runs dailyMay through September fromthe Caveman Bridge in GrantsPass.

Hellgate Jetboat Excursions, 966 S.W. Sixth St., offers a rangeof tours lasting from two to fivehours. Brunch, lunch or dinner isincluded in some tours. Pricesrange from $41 to $69, withdiscounts for children 11 andunder. Group rates are available.Reservations are recommended,as some trips sell out in advance.

KERBYVILLE MUSEUM. Housed inan 1870s-era building, displaysshowcase the area’s pioneerhistory, including early goldmining and logging. Artifactsinclude prehistoric and NativeAmerican items. Kerbyville wasthe Josephine County seat from1857 to 1886.

The museum, located at 24195Redwood Highway in Kerby, isopen Monday through Saturdayfrom 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. andSunday from noon to 3 p.m.Admission is $5 for adults, $4seniors, $3 veterans, $2 forchildren 6 to 16, and childrenunder six are free. A flat familyrate of $10 is offered.

POTTSVILLE. On 80 acres, thissmall “community” once ownedby late political leader EugeneDebbs Potts is home to old cars,logging and mining equipment,historic documents and oldbuildings. Outdoor exhibits areopen from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.Tours of the museum and“pioneer town” are available byappointment. Pottsville is hometo the annual Father’s DayAntique Tractor and EngineShow, which includes historiccraft demonstrations and a largeflea market. The Pottsville PowWow will also be held there onSept. 6 and 7.

Pottsville is located near Merlin.From Interstate 5, take exit 61, gounder the overpass and turnright (north) on MonumentDrive. Go 3.5 miles and turn lefton Pleasant Valley Road, andPottsville’s entrance will be onthe right.

SCHMIDT HOUSE MUSEUM. A brickhouse at 508 S.W. Fifth Street isone of the older homes in GrantsPass, built in 1900 by grocerClaus Schmidt. A museum since1983, the house contains original furniture, family photos,clothing and other historicalitems. Tours are given Tuesdaysthrough Fridays from 10 a.m. to4 p.m. Admission is $10 for thefirst person, $5 for eachadditional person in the group.Members receive a 10 percentdiscount. The society’s researchlibrary is located next door.

What will you see? A variety of artists come out to line thestreets with their artwork based on eachyear’s theme. There is a featured artist,chosen for his or her widespread talent. Alocal featured artist is also picked to comedisplay his or her creativity. Further,several other street painters are selectedfor a chance to contribute to the decor. Amore recent addition includes schoolteams participating to earn money fortheir school’s art programs. With justchalk and ingenuity, these artists cometogether to transform an asphalt road intoan eye-popping stream of pictures.

What will you hear? Bands are lined up back to back to keepthe music rolling. Each brings their ownstyle of sound to the stage. In the past,we’ve seen guitars, banjos, didgeridoos,even bagpipes! There is space to sit andlisten or to get up and dance!

Our viewers have shared that theevent is, “fabulous with anamazing assortment of music,”“magical and filled with goodfeeling,” and showcases“outstanding work.” But don’t justtake their word for it! First Friday Live! is a monthly communitycelebration taking place in downtown GrantsPass. Our retailers, galleries and restaurants hostspecial receptions, performances, screenings andother events showcasing the work of local andregional artists. There are often special deals anddiscounts offered as well at select stores.

It is a great time to walk around beautifuldowntown, explore theunique stores and artgalleries, look out forenticing entertainmentalong the streets, and stopin for some food and drinksat one of the many alluringrestaurants.

A California couple brought both oftheir small businesses to Grants Passfive years ago and have used some ofthe many local resources to help themcontinue to grow.

“One of the first things we did was jointhe Chamber of Commerce and havingthat networking opportunity washuge,” said Jason VanDusen, whoowns a graphic design business whilehis wife, Bonnie, runs a residential andcommercial cleaning and organizationcompany.

Both took small business managementclasses at the Rogue CommunityCollege Small Business DevelopmentCenter. Those classes walked themthrough human resources, marketing,employee management and payroll.

“It taught us the ins and outs ofbusiness,” VanDusen said.

He added that the friendliness of thebusiness community, even from thosethat would be considered competitors,has been a great resource.

The Grants Pass and JosephineCounty Chamber of Commerce offers membership services to all types of businesses and serviceorganizations while being a referralservice to the general public.

“We offer businesses a referral-basednetworking opportunity,” said ColeneMartin, president of the Chamber.And, the Chamber’s website — www.grantspasschamber.org — is agrowing resource with a detaileddatabase of companies in all industries.

As a local advocate, Martinparticipates in legislative issues thataffect small businesses, with a focus onthose in Southern Oregon. She works

closely with tourism committeesstatewide in an effort to help boost thelocal economy.

Martin says having all of these localbusiness resources has positivelyimpacted downtown Grants Passbusinesses as well as many otheraround the county.

“We are really fortunate to have adowntown that’s really vibrant,”Martin said.

Josephine County has two industrialparks and plenty of open space forsmall businesses.

Here’s a look at a few other businessresources in our area.

Josephine County. Each year, the countyreceives approximately $300,000 fromstate lottery funds earmarked foreconomic development and assistingentrepreneurs start or expand abusiness in Josephine County.

“We have resources for small start-up(businesses) in terms of land use,”explained County CommissionerCherryl Walker. “Josephine County is very interested in attracting smallbusiness.”

The county offers a growing tourismindustry, public transit system, twolocal general aviation airports, and 18parks, most of which have access to theRogue River.

SOREDI. Southern Oregon RegionalEconomic Development, Inc. providesresources to traded-sector businessesin Josephine and Jackson counties.Those businesses manufacture goodslocally and sell the products to peopleprimarily outside the market area.

Resources can include counseling fromexperience entrepreneurs, help with

marketing, and financial assistance.

“We are those companies’best source for how toconnect them to otherresources or assistance,” saidRon Fox, president ofSOREDI.

In addition to helping localbusinesses, SOREDI worksto recruit businesses to thearea that would complement SouthernOregon.

City of Grants Pass. As business advocatefor the city, Don Abbott helps businessowners navigate the process of startingor expanding a business.

“I just kind of smooth theway,” Abbott said. “I may beable to eliminate possibleroadblocks so they aren’tstumbling to find resources,whether it’s funding orbuilding.”

Small Business Development Center. The Rogue Community College SmallBusiness Development Center hasbeen helping Southern Oregonbusinesses grow and succeed for morethan 30 years.

Experienced business advisors provideguidance and support toboth startups and establishedbusinesses. Services includefree, confidential one-on-onecounseling, low-cost businesstraining opportunities,and informationresources to help start,grow, or improve abusiness.
